Short And Long-Term Soil Moisture Effects Of Liana Removal In A Seasonally Moist Tropical Forest, Joseph P. Reid, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Jennifer S. Powers
Short And Long-Term Soil Moisture Effects Of Liana Removal In A Seasonally Moist Tropical Forest, Joseph P. Reid, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Jennifer S. Powers
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Lianas (woody vines) are particularly abundant in tropical forests, and their abundance is increasing in the neotropics. Lianas can compete intensely with trees for above- and belowground resources, including water. As tropical forests experience longer and more intense dry seasons, competition for water is likely to intensify. However, we lack an understanding of how liana abundance affects soil moisture and hence competition with trees for water in tropical forests. To address this critical knowledge gap, we conducted a large-scale liana removal experiment in a seasonal tropical moist forest in central Panama. We monitored shallow and deep soil moisture over the …

Understanding How Young People Experience Risk With Online-To-Offline Sexual Encounters: A Second Qualitative Phase For The Ch@T Project, Elizabeth Vp Marwah
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates how heterosexual young people understand and manage risks related to meeting sexual partners online in the United States. The purpose of this study is to help inform the development of culturally-appropriate sexual risk communication and health promotion messages for young people by linking public health knowledge of adolescent sexual health and eHealth with anthropological theories of risk. With qualitative data from two rounds of semi-structured interviews and two group interviews with university students in central Florida, this study shows how young people experience and prioritize more social-emotional risks in meeting online-to-offline sexual partners compared to physical risks. …

Stochastic Models For Plant Microtubule Self-Organization And Structure, Ezgi Can Eren, Ram Dixit, Natarajan Gautam
Biology Faculty Research
One of the key enablers of shape and growth in plant cells is the cortical microtubule (CMT) system, which is a polymer array that forms an appropriately-structured scaffolding in each cell. Plant biologists have shown that stochastic dynamics and simple rules of interactions between CMTs can lead to a coaligned CMT array structure. However, the mechanisms and conditions that cause CMT arrays to become organized are not well understood. It is prohibitively time-consuming to use actual plants to study the effect of various genetic mutations and environmental conditions on CMT self-organization. In fact, even computer simulations with multiple replications are …

“That Sucks?”: An Evaluation Of The Communication Competence And Enacted Social Support Of Response Messages To Depression Disclosures In College-Aged Students, Daniel Vieth
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Recent communication research on depression has focused on which response messages are most effective in providing emotional comfort to depressed individuals during depression dialogues. This study investigates the impact that a confidant’s initial response to a disclosure has on the disclosing individual, a key moment of dialogue for those with depression. It examines the relationship between the communication competence of responses to depression disclosures and how individuals rate those responses’ enacted social support, hypothesizing that the higher the communication competence of a confidant’s response (where competence reflects the effectiveness of interdependent communication), the more enacted social support the discloser will …

Homogeneous Cosmology With Aggressively Expanding Civilizations, S. Jay Olson
Homogeneous Cosmology With Aggressively Expanding Civilizations, S. Jay Olson
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the context of a homogeneous Universe, we note that the appearance of aggressively expanding advanced life is geometrically similar to the process of nucleation and bubble growth in a first-order cosmological phase transition. We exploit this similarity to describe the dynamics of life saturating the Universe on a cosmic scale, adapting the phase transition model to incorporate probability distributions of expansion and resource consumption strategies. Through a series of numerical solutions spanning several orders of magnitude in the input assumption parameters, the resulting cosmological model is used to address basic questions related to the intergalactic spreading of life, dealing …

Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (Chip) Assay For Detecting Direct And Indirect Protein -Dna Interactions In Magnaporthe Oryzae, Gang Li, Margarita Marroquin-Guzman, Richard A. Wilson
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) is a powerful technology for analyzing protein-DNA interactions in cells. Robust ChIP procedures have been established for investigating direct interactions between protein and DNA. However, detecting indirect protein-DNA interactions in vivo is challenging. Recently, we used ChIP to analyze an indirect protein-DNA interaction between a putative histone demethylase, MoJmjC, and the promoter of the superoxide dismutase 1-encoding gene MoSOD1 in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae (M. oryzae) (Fernandez et al., 2014). We tagged MoJmjC with the 3x FLAG epitope (Fernandez et al., 2014), instead of the larger and more commonly used GFP epitope, to mitigate …

Equation Of Motion Coupled Cluster Methods For Electron Attachment And Ionization Potential In Polyacenes, Kiran Bhaskaran-Nair, Karol Kowalski, Mark Jarrell, Juana Moreno, William A. Shelton
Faculty Publications
Polyacenes have attracted considerable attention due to their various applications in organic optoelectronic materials. This study focuses on linear polyacenes and their electron affinity (EA) and ionization potential (IP) properties. We have employed our recent implementation of EA/IP equation of motion coupled cluster singles and doubles (EA/IP-EOMCCSD) methods which are accurate, computationally efficient and are capable of treating large systems employing reasonable basis sets size. The EA/IP results obtained for naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene, pentacene, hexacene and heptacene are in a good agreement with experiment. Comparison between quality of excitation energies obtained from IP-EOMCCSD and EE-EOMCCSD formalisms were also studied.
