Methionine aminopeptidases are ubiquitous enzymes that are essential for the survival of numerous bacteria, removing N-terminal methionines from nascent proteins to initiate post-secondary modification. The ultimate goal of this study is to identify selective inhibitors targeting methionine aminopeptidases from infective organisms, including Burkholderia pseudomallei, Plasmodium falciparum, and Rickettsia prowazekii, to generate novel anti-infective agents.;Plasmodium falciparum methionine aminopeptidase ( PfMetAP2) was expressed and purified in-house from truncated sequence of PfMetAP2, while Burkholderia pseudomallei methionine aminopeptidase 1 and Rickettsia prowazekii methionine aminopeptidase 1 was obtained from Seattle Biomedical Research Institute. This dissertation examines motivation in middle school girls involved in one STEM OST program. Specifically, motivation is examined through four distinct components. These components are attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. Although these components are unique, they cumulatively create a holistic picture of motivation in program design. The middle school girl participants were observed at program workshops and personal interviews. Exploring program design elements through this lens of motivation was a qualitative effort to both understand how participants respond to design elements, and what might encourage future participation in STEM activities.

The purpose of this study was to examine potential moderators of high school counselors' self-efficacy and role stress. The study provides an overview of the sources of school counselor role stressors, the history of school counseling, self-efficacy, and the Indivisible Self wellness model. Quantitative data was collected on 141 high school counselors who completed a demographic survey, the School Counselor Self-efficacy Scale (SCSE), the 5F-Wel, and the Role Questionnaire (RQ). Immunoglobulin (Ig) secretion by terminally differentiated B cells is an important component of the immune response to foreign pathogens. Its over-production is a defining characteristic of many B cell malignancies including Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM), where elevated levels of IgM is associated with significant morbidity and poor prognosis. Therefore, the identification and characterization of the mechanisms controlling Ig secretion are of great importance for the development of future therapeutic approaches for this disease. This thesis examines the historical implications of miscegenation and interracial interactions between minority males and white females in Post-World War II independent cinema. Elia Kazan's studio film Pinky (1949) exemplifies the perceived acceptable studio representations of interracial coupling. My examination of Kazan's film provides a starting point from which to evaluate other textual situations of interracial interaction, particularly in relation to casting. In contrast, Pierre Chenal's adaptation of Richard Wright's Native Son, Sangre Negra (1951) exhibits key differences in interracial depictions between studio productions and independent productions of that era. This study aimed to explore the existence of the theoretical constructs of Adlerian personality priorities, a component in conceptualizing clients’: (a) pleasing, (b) control, (c) comfort, and (d) superiority (Kefir, 1971). Researchers implemented a multi-step process for the development of the Adlerian Personality Priority Assessment (APPA), including a focus group, expert panel, pilot study, and an exploratory factor analysis (EFA). For the EFA with the APPA (N = 393) identified a four-factor structure, supporting the construct validity of the original four Adlerian personality priorities. Progress has been made in reducing maternal mortality,1 which accelerated with the launch of the United Nations secretary general’s Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health in 2010. Food-grade protein hydrolysates can enhance the growth of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Thermal degradation of bioactives normally occurs during microencapsulation by spray drying. Bigmouth Sleeper, Gobiomorus dormitor, are tropical fish native to rivers of Puerto Rico. They are popular sport fish targeted by local anglers. They are considered as diadromous, but this characterization is controversial. The displacement of Bigmouth Sleepers in the Río Cañas, Puerto Rico, was examined using radio telemetry. Twenty fish were radio-tagged and monitored from January to November 2008. Fish were in the Río Cañas 69%, 62%, and 59% of the time before (January-May), during (June-August), and after (September-November) the spawning season, respectively. Average detected linear home range (within the river) for all tracking periods was 2.3 km, but …

The clam, Rangia cuneata, occurs in low salinity zones of Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico estuaries. Prior to 2001, it was abundant in Lake Pontchartrain, a large and shallow oligohaline estuary, located north of New Orleans. However, abundance abruptly decreased by 96% after an extreme drought from an El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) shift (1998-2000). Stable higher salinities resulted in the establishment of higher salinity communities. The hooked mussel, Ischadium recurvum, increased abruptly and colonized live R. cuneata. Competition from I. recurvum and the R. cuneata decline occurred at the end of the drought, despite a decrease …

Introduction: While religiosity (e.g. prayer, attending church) has been reported to be related to health behaviors in pregnant women, whether religiosity was related to health-promoting behaviors in pregnant women at Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRC) had not been previously studied. The purpose of this research study was to explore the relationship between religiosity and health-promoting behaviors of pregnant women at PRC. In early twentieth-century America, white society used white female purity, psychological and racial pressures, and intense physical violence as methods by which to control the sexual behavior of black men and white women. An exploration of the case study of African American boxer Jack Johnson reveals the use of these tools in the public response to his relationships with three white women: Belle Schreiber, Etta Duryea, and Lucille Cameron. Administrators love externships because of their high enrollment, low cost nature: externships leverage small amounts of resources from hundreds of outside organizations. Thorstein Veblen highlighted a number of human instincts, one of which was the “parental bent.” In contrast to the other “positive” instincts, the parental bent is specifically other-regarding in that Veblen described it in terms of utilizing knowledge for the betterment of society. Veblen’s “parental bent” stresses the social embeddedness of humanity and the human instinct to care. Our ability to care is partially predicated on our social roles and the values embedded within those roles. Critically, this is influenced by the configuration of institutions within a society.
