This qualitative research study explored how counselors experience the development of a personal guiding theory of counseling. How counselors define their personal guiding theory, what factors have influenced their development, and how they incorporate their personal guiding theory into their counseling with clients was examined. Thirteen participants were recruited through reputational and snowball sampling. All participants held at least a master's degree in counseling, were a licensed counselor in their state of practice, and had at least 10 years of counseling experience. Epistemic curiosity is a drive that increases arousal and motivates epistemic behavior such as question asking and continued information seeking. According to the knowledge-gap model of curiosity, epistemic curiosity is aroused when a person acknowledges a gap between what they know and what they would like to know. Presenting questions to an individual is theorized to prompt the creation of such knowledge-gaps. Why do states accept the risks associated with hosting a sporting mega-event? This dissertation argues states pursue sporting mega-events for the purposes of promoting identity and interests. Specifically, this dissertation explores the hypothesis that emerging states use sporting mega-events as moments of public diplomacy to facilitate the promotion of identity and pursuit of national interests. This dissertation uses a qualitative case study methodology framed within the constructivist international relations literature. Along with the increase in temperature due to global warming, changes in precipitation will also accompany climate change (IPCC, 2014) leading to more severe droughts in some areas. How these changes will effect plant growth requires further investigation. Most vascular plants form symbiotic relationships with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Gange and Smith 2005). Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal colonization of plants has been found to reduce stresses such as drought (Davies et al. 2002) and herbivory (Bennett et al. 2009, Kiers et al. 2010), which may allow plants to survive with less water or in the presence of insect pests. Radio frequency electron guns are widely used to generate and rapidly accelerate electron beams to relativistic energies. The filamentous fungus Aspergillus flavus is an agriculturally important opportunistic plant pathogen that produces potent carcinogenic compounds called aflatoxins. We identified the rtfA gene, ortholog of rtf1 in S. cerevisiae and rtfA in A. nidulans, in A. flavus. Interestingly, rtfA has multiple cellular roles in this mycotoxin-producing fungus. In this study, we show that rtfA regulates conidiation. The rtfA deletion mutant presented smaller conidiophores with significantly reduced conidial production compared to the wild-type strain. The absence of rtfA also resulted in a significantly decreased or lack of sclerotial production under conditions that allowed abundant production of these resistance structures in …

The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the influence that a threat to university students' academic competence had on their reported competence, self-efficacy, and the avoidance of help seeking in academics. This dissertation was conceptualized based on symbolic self-completion theory which maintains that when individuals are actively committed to pursuing certain self-definitions, they define themselves as complete (e.g., competent or possessing a desired quality) through the use of symbols of attainment. A multi-step organic synthetic methodology to attach multiple boron-containing carborane cages (boron source) to suitable biocompatible organic compounds (carriers) that can be used for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) applications has been established1. The method involves alkylation of the selected organic compounds followed by conjugation with a polyhedral carborane cage using a click reaction2, 3(see scheme 1). To date, carborane derivatives of 4-nitroimidazole, 2-nitroimidazole, phenothiazine, 1, 3, 4-thiadiazole-2, 5-dithiol, adenine, 6-chloropurine and 3', 5'-dihydroxyacetophenone have been successfully synthesized. A suburban high school in Northern Illinois conducted a mentoring program for freshmen students entering the school to assist with transitioning to the new setting. The program, entitled "Link Crew," matched junior- and senior-aged trained peers to groups of freshmen students to share information about the traditions, expectations, and methods to find success in the high school atmosphere. The study was performed to map the homologous recombination crossover regions between the genomic RNA3 of Fescue strain and Russian strain of Brome Mosaic Virus in barley protoplasts. Homologous recombination crossover regions between the genomic RNA 2 of both strains were analyzed previously in high selection pressure system using three different co-infected host plants. Thus, protoplast system was used to lower the selection pressure by eliminating the systemic infection phase. This quantitative, non-experimental study examined the relationship between Illinois public school principal's self-efficacy and technology behaviors. The Principal Sense of Efficacy Scale (PSES; Tschannen-Moran & Gareis, 2004) was used to measure self-efficacy, while the Principal Technology Leadership Assessment (PTLA; CASTLE, 2009) was used to measure principal technology behaviors. Demographic variables such principal experience, education employment in any role, and gender were also considered. Of the population of 3400 public school principals statewide, 328 voluntarily participated in this study.;This study found a positive, significant relationship between principal self-efficacy and technology. The present study examined the relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and infant positive emotionality (PE) in the first year postpartum. It was anticipated that a reciprocal relationship between the variables would be identified. One hundred thirty-five mothers and their infants (62 males, 73 females) were recruited to participate in a larger study examining the development of temperament and emotion regulation in the first three years of life. The current study examined the stress-buffering effect of social support on the relations between stress from daily hassles and psychological adjustment. Daily hassles have been associated with various indicators of maladjustment including anxiety and depression. Previous research has identified the stress-buffering effect of social support such that perceived social support moderates the relations between experiencing stress and negative outcomes. Gastrointestinal T lymphocytes are critical for mucosal immunity and HIV pathogenesis, yet little is known about normal T cell numbers and phenotypes in different regions of the gut, or the degree to which ART can restore levels to those of HIV-uninfected individuals. To investigate these questions, we measured T cell frequencies and markers of memory, activation, anergy, and homing in the blood, ileum, and rectum of HIV- and ART-suppressed HIV+ adults. In HIV- individuals, T cell frequencies and phenotypes differed significantly between sites. Compared to HIV- adults, HIV+ adults had lower absolute CD4+T cell counts in the ileal lamina propria …

This dissertation explores writing instruction in fifth-grade classrooms, focusing on the attitudes and behaviors of student writers of differing abilities and their teachers' activities during written language instruction. Assessment of student writing, classroom observations, and interviews with students and teachers showed that above-average, average, and struggling writers have different perceptions about the skills necessary to master the writing process and that their views differed from those of their teachers. While teachers attempted to model composing, editing, revising, and publishing for their students, it was challenging for fifth-grade students to integrate these skills to create high-quality writing products. DRG proteins are encoded by an ancient highly conserved family of GTP binding protein genes. DRG1 and DRG2 orthologs have been found in all eukaryotic organisms tested. Recent evidence in yeast and Arabidopsis suggests that another gene SLH1 a DEAD-Box Helicase, genetically interacts with DRG1 and DRG2. Likewise, the DRG Family Regulatory Proteins DFRP1 and DFRP2 genetically and physically interact with their respective DRG partners. DFRP1 and DFRP2 also interact genetically with SLH1. An anatomical normal was established for the forelimb and hindlimb of the Genus Varecia through observation of skeletal remains and a detailed dissection of the musculature of a black and white ruffed lemur, Varecia variegata. This was used as a healthy state for comparison with a red ruffed lemur, Varecia rubra, displaying a periosteal disease affecting the long bones. This disease presented as large lesions growing along the diaphyses and epiphyses of the ulna, radius, tibia and fibula as well as on the carpals, metacarpals, tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges. The inclusion of causal connectives like "because" has been shown to influence the perceived quality of an explanation (Wiemer & Asiala, under revision). This study tested the effect of individual differences on the evaluation of explanations containing causal connective "because". Participants were recruited from programs of study in psychology and the natural sciences, and read 24 texts describing various scientific phenomena. Each text was followed by a "why" question about the causal mechanism of the phenomena, and a corresponding answer to be evaluated in terms of its quality as an explanation for that question. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are rapidly expanding in rural Illinois. This research explores the political power linkages between county boards and corporate entities in four Illinois counties. The hypothesis is that collusion and impropriety within county board politics and CAFO expansion in rural Illinois are attributed to stakeholder influence and power at the local county government level. Prior studies evaluating associations between parent and child characteristics have focused largely on mother-child, but not father-child, dyadic relationships. Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that research including fathers is needed because knowledge about how maternal, paternal, and child characteristics may be interrelated is lacking and there is theoretical work suggesting that paternal behavior may be more sensitive to interpersonal factors than maternal behavior. Previous work has demonstrated links between early fearful temperament and risk for the subsequent development of anxiety disorders; thus, factors that may influence the development of early fear are important to consider. Maternal anxiety has previously been linked to child anxiety, though limited work has examined potential relationships between maternal anxiety and infant fear. Anxious mothers have been observed to be more critical/rejecting and intrusive/overcontrolling in their interactions with their children, and these parenting behaviors have been related to greater risk for childhood anxiety. This thesis is based on an anthropological field study of the Jurica Suchy Nature Museum (JSNM). This project examines how internal and external pressures have impacted university museums and how they are responding to this change.
