Bacterial Community Dynamics In Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Kuekenthali Under Irradiance And Antibiotics, Nidhi Vijayan Nov 2015

Bacterial Community Dynamics In Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Kuekenthali Under Irradiance And Antibiotics, Nidhi Vijayan

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The Marine sponge Cinachyrella sp used in this study are commonly found in offshore South Florida and Caribbean waters and appeared to be resilient in closed system aquaculture. Marine sponges host diverse bacterial symbionts that are distinct compared to bacteria found in ambient seawater, however the roles of a large fraction of the bacterial community in marine sponges are unknown. Comparison of symbiotic to aposymbiotic (bacteria-free) sponges could provide information about interactions (metabolic and physiologic) between the bacteria and sponge. In this study, a single Cinachyrella kuekenthali individual was subsectioned into explants (N=240) in order to provide identical bacterial communities …

Progress Toward A Structure-Function Relationship For Novel, Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1, Sarah Burke Nov 2015

Progress Toward A Structure-Function Relationship For Novel, Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1, Sarah Burke

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is a serpin protein whose function is to inhibit tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), and hence, fibrinolysis. This inhibition leads to decreased plasminogen to plasmin conversion, which results in deleterious effects on the organism, such as blood clots. Elevated levels of PAI-1 are implicated in a variety of diseases and conditions. We have synthesized a variety of novel, small-molecule PAI-1 inhibitors in order to establish a structure-function relationship throughout the compounds. This goal was accomplished through an iterative process in which only one aspect of the molecule was altered at a time. …

Beaked whales are deep diving elusive animals, difficult to census with conventional visual surveys. Methods are presented for the density estimation of beaked whales, using passive acoustic monitoring data collected at sites in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) from the period during and following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (2010-2013). Beaked whale species detected include: Gervais' (Mesoplodon europaeus), Cuvier's (Ziphius cavirostris), Blainville's (Mesoplodon densirostris) and an unknown species of Mesoplodon sp. (designated as Beaked Whale Gulf - BWG). For Gervais' and Cuvier's beaked whales, we estimated weekly animal density using two methods, one based on the number of echolocation clicks, …

Sidestream Smoke Exposure Increases The Susceptibility Of Airway Epithelia To Adenoviral Infection, Priyanka Sharma, Abimbola O. Kolawole, Susan B. Core, Adriana E. Kajon, Katherine J.D.A. Excoffon Nov 2015

Sidestream Smoke Exposure Increases The Susceptibility Of Airway Epithelia To Adenoviral Infection, Priyanka Sharma, Abimbola O. Kolawole, Susan B. Core, Adriana E. Kajon, Katherine J.D.A. Excoffon

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Although significant epidemiological evidence indicates that cigarette smoke exposure increases the incidence and severity of viral infection, the molecular mechanisms behind the increased susceptibility of the respiratory tract to viral pathogens are unclear. Adenoviruses are non-enveloped DNA viruses and important causative agents of acute respiratory disease. The Coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) is the primary receptor for many adenoviruses. We hypothesized that cigarette smoke exposure increases epithelial susceptibility to adenovirus infection by increasing the abundance of apical CAR. Methodology and Findings: Cultured human airway epithelial cells (CaLu-3) were used as a model to investigate the effect of sidestream cigarette …

Size-Controlled Large-Diameter And Few-Walled Carbon Nanotube Catalysts For Oxygen Reduction, Xianliang Wang, Qing Li, Hengyu Pan, Ye Lin, Yujie Ke, Haiyang Sheng, Mark T. Swihart, Gang Wu Nov 2015

Size-Controlled Large-Diameter And Few-Walled Carbon Nanotube Catalysts For Oxygen Reduction, Xianliang Wang, Qing Li, Hengyu Pan, Ye Lin, Yujie Ke, Haiyang Sheng, Mark T. Swihart, Gang Wu

Faculty Publications

We demonstrate a new strategy for tuning the size of large-diameter and few-walled nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) from 50 to 150 nm by varying the transition metal (TM = Fe, Co, Ni or Mn) used to catalyze graphitization of dicyandiamide. Fe yielded the largest tubes, followed by Co and Ni, while Mn produced a clot-like carbon morphology. We show that morphology is correlated with electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A clear trend of Fe > Co > Ni > Mn for the ORR catalytic activity was observed, in both alkaline media and more demanding acidic media. The Fe-derived N-CNTs exhibited …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Wnt/β-catenin signaling is required for crypt structure maintenance. We previously observed nuclear accumulation of Ser-552 phosphorylated β-catenin (pβ-CatSer-552) in intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) during colitis and colitis-associated cancer. Data here delineate a novel multiprotein cytosolic complex (MCC) involved in β-catenin signaling in the intestine. The MCC contains p85α, the class IA subunit of PI3K, along with β-catenin, 14-3-3ζ, Akt, and p110α. MCC levels in IEC increase in colitis and colitis-associated cancer patients. IEC-specific p85α-deficient (p85ΔIEC) mice develop more severe dextran sodium …

The prepared complex was functionally evaluated by apparent solubility, in vitro drug release, ex vivo permeation, and in vivo efficacy studies. The prepared CN exhibited a significantly higher (12-fold) aqueous …

Herbicides Applied At Or Shortly After Seeding Are Effective For Weed Control In Seedling Buffalograss, Luqi Li, Matthew D. Sousek, Zachary Reicher Nov 2015

Herbicides Applied At Or Shortly After Seeding Are Effective For Weed Control In Seedling Buffalograss, Luqi Li, Matthew D. Sousek, Zachary Reicher

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Herbicides applied shortly after seeding of buffalograss [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm.] can help reduce weed pressure and maximize establishment of buffalograss. This study evaluated 12 relatively recently developed herbicides for turf safety and weed control when applied at seeding or 0 or 2 weeks after emergence (WAE) of ‘Bowie’ or ‘Sundancer’ buffalograss. Primary weed species on the site were common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), and/or yellow foxtail [Setaria lutescens (Weigel ex Stuntz) F.T. Hubb.]. Regardless of cultivar, untreated checks had53% weed cover by 6 WAE, whereas most of the herbicide treatments resulted …

Environmental Enrichment Increases Glucocorticoid Receptors And Decreases Glua2 And Protein Kinase M Zeta (Pkmζ) Trafficking During Chronic Stress: A Protective Mechanism?, Roseanna M. Zanca, Stephen H. Braren, Brigid Maloney, Lisa M. Schrott, Victoria N. Luine, Peter A. Serrano Nov 2015

Environmental Enrichment Increases Glucocorticoid Receptors And Decreases Glua2 And Protein Kinase M Zeta (Pkmζ) Trafficking During Chronic Stress: A Protective Mechanism?, Roseanna M. Zanca, Stephen H. Braren, Brigid Maloney, Lisa M. Schrott, Victoria N. Luine, Peter A. Serrano

Publications and Research

Environmental enrichment (EE) housing paradigms have long been shown beneficial for brain function involving neural growth and activity, learning and memory capacity, and for developing stress resiliency. The expression of the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor subunit GluA2, which is important for synaptic plasticity and memory, is increased with corticosterone (CORT), undermining synaptic plasticity and memory. Thus, we determined the effect of EE and stress on modulating GluA2 expression in Sprague-Dawley male rats. Several markers were evaluated which include: plasma CORT, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), GluA2, and the atypical protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ). For 1 week standard-(ST) or EE-housed animals …

Novel Enzyme Perspectives: Arylalkylamine N-Acyltransferases From Bombyx Mori & 1-Deoxy- D-Xylulose-5-Phosphate Synthase From Plasmodium Falciparum And Plasmodium Vivax, Matthew R. Battistini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is dedicated to the research and investigation of novel enzymes and the methods used to study them, with physiological roles ranging from isoprenoid biosynthesis to neurotransmitter production. Using a combination of bioinformatics, recombinant cloning, enzymology, and proteomics, we have contributed to the understanding and exploration of several human illnesses, including malaria, cancer, and endocrine dysfunction.

Our first project involved studying the enzymes responsible for N-acylarylalkylamide biosynthesis in Bombyx mori. Very little is known how these potent signaling molecules are produced in vivo, however, one possible pathway is the direct conjugation of an acyl-CoA to a corresponding …

The Mcdonald Quasi Lindley Distribution And Its Statistical Properties With Applications, Rasool Roozegar, Fatemeh Esfandiyari

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

A new five-parameter distribution so-called the McDonald quasi Lindley distribution is proposed. The new distribution contains, as special submodels, several important distributions discussed in the literature, such as the beta quasi Lindley, Kumaraswamy quasi Lindley, beta Lindley, kumaraswamy Lindley and Lindley distributions, among others. The properties of this new distribution, including hazard function, reversed hazard function, shapes, moments, entropy and moment generating function are derived. We provide the density function of the order statistics and their moments. Method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate the parameters of the new and related distributions. The flexibility and usefulness of the new model …

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Exclusive breastfeeding is an eminent public health tool for primary prevention of child morbidity and mortality. Infant feeding practices have a major role in determining the nutritional status of child.Malnutrition has been responsible directly or indirectly for 60 percent of 10.9 million deaths annually among children under 5 years. Over two-third of these deaths are associated with inappropriate feeding practices occur during the first year of life. The aim of this paper is to examine the role of exclusive breastfeeding on nutritional status of child in the Empowered Action Group (EAG) states of India. The eight EAG states constitute about …

Some Properties Of Exponentiated Weibull-Generalized Exponential Distribution, Suriya Jabeen, T. R Jan Nov 2015

Some Properties Of Exponentiated Weibull-Generalized Exponential Distribution, Suriya Jabeen, T. R Jan

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Several general methods have been developed for generating new flexible family of distributions. In this paper an attempt has been made to develop the Exponentiated Weibull-Generalized Exponential Distribution (EWGED). This distribution is an extension of Generalized Weibull-Exponential distribution. Various properties of this distribution has been discussed viz limiting behaviour, Shannon’s entropy, moments, quantile function, hazard function, survival function. Skewness and kurtosis are discussed. Parameter estimation of exponentiated weibull-generalized exponential distribution by the maximum likelihood method is also provided.
