Keberkesanan Komik Dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Arab Di Sekolah Menengah / Nor Sakinah Binti Ismail Zawawi, Nor Sakinah Ismail Zawawi

Student Works (2010-2019)

Student Works (2010-2019)

Weblogs ushered a new epoch for Malaysian ESL learners ever since its first entry to Malaysia in 1998 (Hopkins, 2010). Since then, scholars in the field of English as a Second Language (ESL) have paid considerable attention to blogging, especially those who teach writing courses (Mah and Er, 2009; Mah and Liaw, 2011; Gedera, 2012; Kaur, Ganapathy, and Sidhu, 2012; Yunus, Kiing, and Salehi, 2013; Ubaidullah, Mahadi, and Ching, 2013). However, little research has been undertaken from a sociolinguistic perspective, let alone gender-oriented to analyse adults’ weblogs. To fill the gap and promote online communication in an ESL community, the …

Surface Modification Of Titanium And Its Alloys In Orthopedic Applications / Tan Ai Wen, Ai Wen Tan Jan 2015

Surface Modification Of Titanium And Its Alloys In Orthopedic Applications / Tan Ai Wen, Ai Wen Tan

Student Works (2010-2019)

The clinical success of any orthopaedic implant is dependent upon the interaction between the implant surface and the respective bone tissue, termed osteo-integration. However, current orthopaedic implants are still limited in effectiveness by the lack of appropriate cell adhesion and osteo-integration due to the intervention of fibrous tissue, leading to implant dislocation, premature loosening and consequently a reduced implant lifespan. Titanium (Ti) and its alloys, which have favourable mechanical properties, superior corrosion resistance and excellent biocompatibility, have been widely investigated for use in orthopaedic implants, but yet fail to achieve exemplary clinical results due to poor osteo-integration. To address these …

Adaptive Differential Evolution Algorithm With Fitness Based Selection Of Parameters And Mutation Strategies / Rawaa Dawoud Hassan Al-Dabbagh, Al-Dabbagh Rawaa Dawoud Hassan

Student Works (2010-2019)

Differential evolution (DE) is a simple yet powerful evolutionary algorithm (EA). It has demonstrated good convergence, and its principles are easy to understand. DE has effectively solved various global optimization problems, including benchmark functions. These problems have shown different challenging characteristics such as non-convexity, non-linearity, and/or multi-modality which became difficult for traditional non-linear programming to deal with. The performance of DE algorithm depends heavily on the selected mutation strategy and its associated control parameters. The sensitivity of the DE algorithm to its mutation strategy and to the corresponding control parameters can significantly deteriorate its performance if the strategy is improperly …

Decreasing Disproportionality Through Kinship Care., Aimee Corbin Jan 2015

Decreasing Disproportionality Through Kinship Care., Aimee Corbin

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Expanding financial assistance to kinship placements can reduce disproportionality between racial minorities in Child Protective Services (CPS) custody. Statistics show that nationally, CPS removes a disproportionate number of minority children compared to non-minorities. CPS typically places a child in substitute care when that child is removed from their home, including kinship placement. Kinship placement is defined as the process by which children are placed in the care of relatives or close family friends. The government provides a significantly larger budget for foster care than for kinship placement. Kinship advocates, however, argue that foster placement—the placement in the care of a …

The Medical Cost Pandemic:Why Limiting Access To Cost-Effective Treatments Hurts The Global Poor, Govind Persad Jan 2015

The Medical Cost Pandemic:Why Limiting Access To Cost-Effective Treatments Hurts The Global Poor, Govind Persad

Publications

Medical innovation in developed countries like the U.S. leads to an ever-changing medical standard of care. This innovation frequently also brings rising costs. While these costs strain even the sizeable health care budgets of developed countries, imposing them on developing countries would be much more burdensome. Yet a variety of commentators and legal actors, such as the World Health OrganiZation and UNAIDS, have argued that the same standards of care must be provided worldwide, and have enforced mandates to that effect. Interpretations of the human rght to health as a tight to the "highest attainable standard of health" similarly advance …

Swarm intelligence is a modern artificial intelligence discipline that is concerned with the design and optimization of multiagent systems with applications in robotics. This non-traditional approach is fundamentally different from the traditional approaches. In- stead of a sophisticated controller that governs the global behavior of the system, the swarm intelligence principle is based on many unsophisticated entities (for example such as ants, termites, bees etc.) that cooperate and interact in order to exhibit a desired behav- ior. In this thesis, we implement the modified ant colony programming (ACP) algorithm for solving the matrix Riccati differential equation (MRDE). Solving MRDE, especially …

Expression Profiling Of Microrna Genes Related To Salt Stress In Banana (Musa Acuminata Cv. Berangan) Roots / Lee Wan Sin, Wan Sin Lee

Student Works (2010-2019)

agricultural practices and climate change increase soil salinity, yields are reduced as crops succumb to salinity-induced abiotic stress. Physiological responses to stress are controlled by expression of genes, which in turn are regulated by microRNAs. Since most banana cultivars are salt-sensitive, improved understanding of genetic regulation of abiotic stress responses in banana can support future crop management and improvement. Transcriptome libraries were constructed from salt-stressed and non-salt-stressed banana roots and then sequenced and annotated. Two banana root transcriptomes were assembled into 31,390 unigenes, of which 99.5% were mapped to the reference banana A-genome and 2,993 (9.5%) were found to be …
