Attentional Bias Toward Pain-Related Pictorial Stimuli Among Individuals With Migraine Following Negative Mood Induction, Michael James Mcdermott
Attentional Bias Toward Pain-Related Pictorial Stimuli Among Individuals With Migraine Following Negative Mood Induction, Michael James Mcdermott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Migraine is associated with significant reductions in daily functioning and quality of life and is the 19th largest cause of disability globally. The fear-avoidance model of chronic pain details potential pathways for the development of pain disability and affective distress and provides a platform for understanding the dynamic relationship between psychological factors and migraine. Consistent with the fear-avoidance model, a growing body of research provides support for the role of selective attentional biases toward threat-related stimuli among chronic pain patients. However, the few studies to examine the role of selective attentional biases in migraine demonstrate mixed findings, and the exact …

The Systemic Integration Of Kenyan Immigrants Into The American Culture, Yabesh Nyakang'o Maroko
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Important social transformation has occurred for many Kenyans migrating from Africa to the Twin Cities, Minnesota in the last two decades of the 1900s. This influx of immigrant singles and families migrated to the West in hope of transforming their lives. However, little is known about how these immigrants can integrate into the American culture. This project is an attempt to find strategies on how these groups can smoothly integrate and help their children retain good Kenyan traditional values. The researcher studied the Kenyan and American cultures and drew conclusions based on the findings. The project analyzed the relationship between …

Siblings Of Children With Long Qt Syndrome: Relationships And Coping, Courtney Mccuen-Wurst Ms, Lcsw
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a congenital heart disorder, usually diagnosed in childhood, that may lead to cardiac arrest, seizures, syncope, and sudden death. The birth of a child with LQTS, as well as the social, physical, and psychological functioning of the affected child, can have a significant impact on the family. The family stress associated with having a child with any disability or chronic illness is likely to affect the lives of siblings. The lack of research on the effects of having a sibling with long QT syndrome on individuals who do not have LQTS provided the rationale for …
The Development And Tryout Of A Program Designed To Increase Students' Multiplication Fact Fluency, Linton D. Williams
The Development And Tryout Of A Program Designed To Increase Students' Multiplication Fact Fluency, Linton D. Williams
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Fluency skills are fundamental to the ability to complete relatively more complex problems using less mental energy. Most math curriculums do not stress the importance of automaticity of math facts. Variations in teaching styles and teaching modality seem to negate the true purpose for cementing and rapidly retrieving math facts. This study put to the test a program that was designed to increase students’ ability to retrieve multiplication facts fluently. The program exercised cognitive structures and enabled students to retrieve multiplication facts quickly. The results of a matched-pairs t-test indicated that after the students completed the course of the program, …
An Exploration Of Social Connectedness As A Predictor Of Quality Of Life In Acquired Brain Injury Survivors, Jennifer Oyekanmi
An Exploration Of Social Connectedness As A Predictor Of Quality Of Life In Acquired Brain Injury Survivors, Jennifer Oyekanmi
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Research on quality of life in ABI survivors has focused on four domains: psychological, physical, social, and cognitive (Upadhyay, 2007). Social relationships, in particular, can help ABI survivors more effectively cope with changes in their lives, help maintain a healthy outlook, and can help with seeking further understanding of the consequences of sustaining a ABI (Hibbard et al, 2002). The current study sought to examine if social connectedness is predictive of quality of life in ABI survivors. Participants were 71 individuals who have sustained a ABI and who currently or in the past participated in a long term rehabilitation program. …

Cross-Talk Between The Tumor Suppressors Par-4 And P53, Tripti Shrestha Bhattarai
Cross-Talk Between The Tumor Suppressors Par-4 And P53, Tripti Shrestha Bhattarai
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
This work describes the fascinating interplay between two tumor suppressors Prostate apoptosis response-4 (Par-4) and p53. The guardian of the genome, p53, is frequently mutated in human cancers, and may contribute to therapeutic resistance. However, p53 is intact and functional in normal tissues, and we observed that specific activation of p53 in normal fibroblasts could induce apoptosis selectively in p53-deficient cancer cells. This paracrine apoptotic effect was executed by Par-4 secreted in response to p53 activation. Accordingly, activation of p53 in wild-type mice, but not in p53-/- or Par-4-/- mice, caused systemic elevation of Par-4 that induced apoptosis …

Impact Of Kentucky Vaccination Exemption Laws On Pertussis Incidence, Katherine Blain
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Purpose: According to CDC statistics, prior to pertussis vaccine development in the 1940’s, about 200,000 children contracted pertussis annually. Today, although this number has decreased drastically, pertussis cases began trending upward again in the 1980’s. There are several proposed contributory factors, including vaccination exemption. In Kentucky, there are both medical and religious exemptions to mandatory school vaccines. The purpose of this study was to examine possible correlations between reported school vaccination exemptions and pertussis incidence in Kentucky counties between the years 2004-2012.
Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 120 Kentucky counties between 2004-2012. The Commonwealth of Kentucky School Annual …

Overexpression Of Human Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutase In Mice; The Effect Of Increase Superoxide Scavenging On Autonomic Control Of The Heart., Jeffrey Hatcher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dysregulation of the autonomic cardiovascular control is a complication of diseases including diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and aging. A common factor in these conditions is an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) in neural, cardiac, and endothelial tissues. Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) is an intracellular anti-oxidant enzyme that catalyzes dismutation of the superoxide anion (O2.-) to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Expression and function of this enzyme are diminished in pathologies that impair cardiovascular autonomic control. This study employed mice overexpressing a transgene for human SOD1 (hSOD1) to determine if its overexpression would alter autonomic regulation of BP, HR, and BRS in …

Viscoelastic Effects On Electrokinetic Particle Focusing In A Constricted Microchannel, Xinyu Lu, John Dubose, Sang Woo Joo, Shizhi Qian, Xiangchun Xuan
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Focusing suspended particles in a fluid into a single file is often necessary prior to continuous-flow detection, analysis, and separation. Electrokinetic particle focusing has been demonstrated in constricted microchannels by the use of the constriction-induced dielectrophoresis. However, previous studies on this subject have been limited to Newtonian fluids only. We report in this paper an experimental investigation of the viscoelastic effects on electrokinetic particle focusing in non-Newtonian polyethylene oxide solutions through a constricted microchannel. The width of the focused particle stream is found NOT to decrease with the increase in DC electric field, which is different from that in Newtonian …

Since Hg usually settles into water polluting the environment and accumulating in living organisms, it is crucial to monitor Hg levels in the aquatic ecosystem. Although there are many well established techniques currently used to detect Hg, most of them require elaborate and time-consuming sample preparation and pre-concentration procedures, as well as costly and bulky equipment that limit their practical application in the field. In order to overcome the existent limitations in Hg determination methods, Hernandez …
Exploring Social Identity Through Stable Isotope Analysis In The Kellis 2 Cemetery, Kaitlin East
Exploring Social Identity Through Stable Isotope Analysis In The Kellis 2 Cemetery, Kaitlin East
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The material remains of ancient Egypt provide extensive and wide ranging data about the empire throughout its history. However, little evidence is available from ancient Egypt, or any past culture, with which to rebuild an image of social identity or individual experiences. This is especially problematic when the dominant narrative ignores experiences of minorities and minimizes the variation existing throughout the empire. Stable isotope analysis has the potential to reveal variability in lived experience of past peoples by acting as a proxy for behavior that can be analyzed from bone. Such an approach has been applied on individuals from the …
Water Quality Trading From The Point Source Perspective: Willingness To Pay For Abatement Credits And Preferences For Water Quality Trading Market Mechanism, Andrew Mclaughlin
Water Quality Trading From The Point Source Perspective: Willingness To Pay For Abatement Credits And Preferences For Water Quality Trading Market Mechanism, Andrew Mclaughlin
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
As part of the EPA’s initiative to reduce the hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico, a feasibility study for a potential water quality trading (WQT) program in the Kentucky River Watershed (KRW) was conducted. While theoretically, emission trading programs are among the most efficient means of reducing pollution, empirical evidence suggests low-trade volume as a primary concern for the long-term success of such programs. Some of the important reasons for the low volume of trade are due to lack of suitable market trading mechanism for point sources and lack of information on willingness to pay (WTP) for abatement credits. …
