The Precebo Illusion Of Pain Analgesia Using The Cold Pressor Task, Man Chun Kam Jan 2015

The Precebo Illusion Of Pain Analgesia Using The Cold Pressor Task, Man Chun Kam

Bachelor of Social Sciences – Senior Theses

Everybody feels physical pain at some time in their life. Although physical pain can protect us from seriously harming ourselves, pain can also be harmful. Studies have revealed that unrelieved pain can have a long lasting harmful effect on both physical and psychological health (Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, 2006). Therefore, pain analgesia has long been an important issue in various fields, such as medical, biological and psychological field. In the current study, pain analgesia was studied through a psychological phenomenon called precebo illusion.

The Action Cycle/Structural Context Framework: A Fisheries Application, D. G. Webster Jan 2015

The Action Cycle/Structural Context Framework: A Fisheries Application, D. G. Webster

Dartmouth Scholarship

There is a growing consensus that environmental governance is a wicked problem that requires understanding of the many linkages and feedbacks between human and natural systems. Here, I propose an action cycle/structural context (AC/SC) framework that is based on the concept of responsive governance, in which individuals and decision makers respond to problems rather than working to prevent them. By linking agency and structure, the AC/SC framework points out two key problems in the realm of environmental governance: the profit disconnect, whereby economic signals of environmental harm are dampened by endogenous or exogenous forces, and the power disconnect, whereby those …

Three Patients Needing High Doses Of Valproic Acid To Get Therapeutic Concentrations, James Jackson, Betsy Mccollum, Judy Ognibene, Francisco J. Diaz, Jose De Leon Jan 2015

Three Patients Needing High Doses Of Valproic Acid To Get Therapeutic Concentrations, James Jackson, Betsy Mccollum, Judy Ognibene, Francisco J. Diaz, Jose De Leon

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

Valproic acid (VPA) can autoinduce its own metabolism. Cases requiring VPA doses >4000 mg/day to obtain therapeutic plasma concentrations, such as these 3 cases, have never been published. Case 1 received VPA for seizures and schizophrenia and had >50 VPA concentrations in 4 years. A high dose of 5,250 mg/day of VPA concentrate was prescribed for years but this dose led to an intoxication when switched to the enterocoated divalproex sodium formulation, requiring a normal dose of 2000 mg/day. VPA metabolic capacity was significantly higher (t = -9.6; df = 6.3, p < 0.001) during the VPA concentrate therapy, possibly due to autoinduction in that formulation. Case 2 had VPA for schizoaffective psychosis with 10 VPA concentrations during an 8-week admission. To maintain a VPA level ≥50 μg/mL, VPA doses increased from 1500 …

Coffee: A Selected Overview Of Beneficial Or Harmful Effects On The Cardiovascular System?, Thomas F. Whayne Jr. Jan 2015

Coffee: A Selected Overview Of Beneficial Or Harmful Effects On The Cardiovascular System?, Thomas F. Whayne Jr.

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

With a history that began in 800 A.D., coffee is the most popular drink known and as a result, the issues regarding its physiologic effects deserve attention. Maintaining alertness is a well-known benefit and in addition, the cardiovascular (CV) effects of the active compounds, which include polyphenols and caffeine, must be considered. Genetics are relevant and where slow caffeine metabolism is inherent, the risk of nonfatal myocardial (MI) has been shown to be increased. Overall risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) is not supported and unless there is excessive intake, congestive heart failure (CHF) is not adversely affected; in moderation, …

Multipoint Spectroscopy And Stereoscopic Imaging Of Pharmaceutical Particles, Hicham Rifai Jan 2015

Multipoint Spectroscopy And Stereoscopic Imaging Of Pharmaceutical Particles, Hicham Rifai

Masters

Particle and granule properties play a key role in the final product quality of pharmaceuticals. Thus the identification and monitoring of key chemical and physical parameters is essential in the production of pharmaceuticals. The existing off-line methods are generally slow and labour intensive. Near infra-red (NIR) multipoint spectroscopy and image analysis are an attractive alternative compared to the traditional methods because they are both nondestructive and non-interfering allowing the analysis in real time of particles physical and chemical properties. This research is a preliminary study performed at laboratory scale and aims at developing chemometric and imaging algorithms for real time …

Workplace Well-Being: Examining The Mental And Psychological Health And Safety Of Non-Unionised And Unionised Employees, Peter O'Mahony Jan 2015

Workplace Well-Being: Examining The Mental And Psychological Health And Safety Of Non-Unionised And Unionised Employees, Peter O'Mahony

Theses

A quantitative case study was conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the mental and psychological health and safety of non-unionised and unionised employees within the researcher's organisation, a multi-national pharmaceutical company based in Ireland. One hundred and sixty-seven employees and seven senior managers were surveyed to explore their perspectives of psychological health and safety risks in the workplace across thirteen different psychosocial factors which are known to either have positive or negative effects on the psychological health and well-being of an employee.

The Guarding Minds at Work (GM@W) online survey resources were considered appropriate methods to collect the necessary …

Young People's Experiences Of Crime: An Investigation Into The Victimisation And Offending Of Inner-City Dublin Youth, Kalis Pope Jan 2015

Young People's Experiences Of Crime: An Investigation Into The Victimisation And Offending Of Inner-City Dublin Youth, Kalis Pope

Doctoral

This project is one of the first empirical investigations into youth victimisation and offending in Ireland and is one of three research projects that were established under the Youth Crime Research Project: Young People’s Experiences of Crime. Victim surveys are of particular interest to this study, as they help to illuminate the 'dark figure' of crime through ascertaining individual's experiences of victimisation, while simultaneously collecting pertinent information regarding their own level of criminality. A common failure among the majority of victim surveys, however, is that they do not investigate the experiences of young people. This project seeks to address this …

The Corporation As A Time Machine: Intergenerational Equity, Intergenerational Efficiency, And The Corporate Form, Lynn A. Stout Jan 2015

The Corporation As A Time Machine: Intergenerational Equity, Intergenerational Efficiency, And The Corporate Form, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This Symposium Article argues that the board-controlled corporation can be understood as a legal innovation that historically has functioned as a means of transferring wealth forward and sometimes backward through time, for the benefit of present and future generations. In this fashion the board-controlled corporation promotes both intergenerational equity and intergenerational efficiency. Logic and evidence each suggest, however, that the modern embrace of "shareholder value" as the only corporate objective and "shareholder democracy" as the ideal of corporate governance is damaging the corporate form's ability to serve this economically and ethically important function.

When Nominal Is Reasonable: Damages For The Unpracticed Patent, Oskar Liivak Jan 2015

When Nominal Is Reasonable: Damages For The Unpracticed Patent, Oskar Liivak

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

To obtain a substantial patent damage award a patentee need not commercialize the patented invention; the patentee need only show that its patent was infringed. This surely incentivizes patenting but it dis-incentivizes innovation. Why commercialize yourself? The law allows you to wait for others to take the risks, and then you emerge later to lay claim to “in no event less than a reasonable” fraction of other people’s successes. It is rational to be a patent troll rather than an innovator. This troll-enabling interpretation of patent law’s reasonable royalty provision, however, is wrong as a matter of patent policy. Surprisingly, …

Tourism And Crime: Evidence From The Philippines, Len Patrick Dominic M. Garces, Rosalina Palanca-Tan Jan 2015

Tourism And Crime: Evidence From The Philippines, Len Patrick Dominic M. Garces, Rosalina Palanca-Tan

Economics Department Faculty Publications

Using panel data gathered from 16 regions of the Philippines for the period 2009-11, this paper investigates the relationship between tourism and crime. The findings of the study show that the relation between tourism and crime may largely depend on the characteristics of visitors and the types of crime. For all types of crime and their aggregate, no significant correlation between the crime rate (defined as the number of crime cases divided by population) and total tourist arrivals is found. However, a statistically significant positive relation is found between foreign tourism and robbery and theft cases as well as between …

An Interview With Three Deaf Lesbians: Intersectionality And Saliency Of Identity Variables, Amanda L. Schaad Jan 2015

An Interview With Three Deaf Lesbians: Intersectionality And Saliency Of Identity Variables, Amanda L. Schaad

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

LGBQ and Deaf communities have experienced parallel histories of oppression, medicalization, and discrimination that results in poor access to sexual health information and support around sexuality. Moreover, when the two identities intersect the impacts are magnified. Both populations experience vulnerabilities to sexual abuse, and inadequate sexual health information and /or sex education, compared to the majority population. Therefore, there needs to be a better understanding of their experiences with sex education and how mental health services could be helpful, particularly when these identities intersect. The aim and purpose of this study was to explore the interaction between LGBQ (Lesbian, Gay, …

The choice of solvent and additive has been shown to affect efficiency of organic solar cell devices. To gain a basic understanding of the role of solvents in influencing overall device performance, we present a comparative study on the physical properties of donor: acceptor mixtures in different solvents. Investigations have been carried out for P3HT (poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl)), PTB7 (poly[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']-dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluro-2-[2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl[thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]]), PC61BM ([6,6]-phenyl-C60-butyric acid methyl ester), and PC71BM ([6,6]-phenyl-C70-butyric acid methyl ester). The physical properties reported are based on UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, resistance measurements, cyclic voltammetry measurements, and surface energy characterizations of the organic films. The solvents used to prepare the organic films …

Determining The Role Of The Ahr In Immunoglobulin Expression And Class Switch Recombination, Bassam Fawaz Kashgari Jan 2015

Determining The Role Of The Ahr In Immunoglobulin Expression And Class Switch Recombination, Bassam Fawaz Kashgari

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-activated cytosolic transcription factor that regulates xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes. It mediates the toxicity of various environmental chemicals such as 2,3,7,8-tetracholorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). TCDD inhibits the differentiation of B cells into antibody-secreting cells and inhibits immunoglobulin (Ig) expression in various animal models. We have previously determined that TCDD-induced inhibition of the mouse Ig heavy chain gene (mo-Igh) is AhR-dependent. This inhibition may be mediated by binding of the AhR to dioxin response elements (DREs) within the 3'Igh regulatory region (3'IghRR) and inhibition of 3'IghRR activity, a significant transcriptional regulator of Ig expression. However, there are structural …

Vitamin D Receptor And 1Α, 25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 Mediated Regulation Of Δnp63Α, Hill Tremayne Natasha

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (VD3), the ligand for the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR), functions to both inhibit cell growth and promote cell survival. High-dose VD3 is being utilized as a cancer preventive therapy for melanoma, breast and colorectal cancers, without a complete understanding of VD3/VDR signaling. DeltaNp63alpha, considered to be a proto-oncogene, is overexpressed in non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), induces VDR gene expression and promotes keratinocyte proliferation, and may serve to exacerbate non-melanoma skin cancer. The objective of this dissertation was to determine whether VDR/VD3 signaling promotes keratinocyte proliferation by up-regulating DeltaNp63alpha. I showed that VDR increases DeltaNp63alpha expression at both …

Validation of the implementation was done by comparison with primary production results from the Northern Temperate Lakes Long Term Ecological Research database.

Leading Ladies In Willa Cather's The Professor's House, Hannah C. Badenhop Jan 2015

Leading Ladies In Willa Cather's The Professor's House, Hannah C. Badenhop

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This paper analyzes the women in Willa Cather’s novel The Professor’s House and demonstrates the ways in which the women are able to adapt to change better than the men in the novel, even though the women are degraded for their materialism and behaviors. By looking at previous scholarship, this thesis highlights how women in this novel have for some reason been excluded from the academic debate surrounding The Professor’s House. This exclusion is often the result of scholars placing more emphasis on St. Peter and Tom as the main characters in the story. What this ignores, however, is the …

Organic Angels: Innocence, Conversion, And Consumption In The Antebellum American Novel, Laura Jean Schrock Jan 2015

Organic Angels: Innocence, Conversion, And Consumption In The Antebellum American Novel, Laura Jean Schrock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Midcentury American novelists variously reworked the traditional conversion narrative to reflect a marked cultural shift in attitude towards human "nature," newly conceived as innocent and inclined to salvation. This liberalized aesthetic of conversion takes shape through the trope of the "organic angel," a developmental female figure whose journey from childhood innocence to saintly womanhood merges the processes of sexual maturation and Protestant conversion. Because she purifies self-interested desire by redirecting it towards spiritual ends, the organic angel provides a symbolic reconciliation of the young nation's budding imperial capitalism with its millennial expectations. While traditional emphasis on a maternal ethos at …

Systems Biology Approach To Understanding The Control Of Glucose Metabolism In Healthy And Apoptotic Neurons, Hoda Gebril Jan 2015

Systems Biology Approach To Understanding The Control Of Glucose Metabolism In Healthy And Apoptotic Neurons, Hoda Gebril

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Apoptosis plays a crucial role in sculpting the developing central nervous system (CNS) but can, under certain conditions, contribute to neurodegeneration in the mature CNS. Metabolic disturbances have long been associated with apoptosis-inducing agents, however, the mechanism underlying such changes remains controversial. In this study, our hypotheses was that decreased ATP turnover may bring about other metabolic changes in apoptotic neurons. Accordingly, change in metabolic reactions other than ATP turnover may not be important in the study of apoptotic mechanism. In a living cell, metabolic reactions are highly connected and thus are highly sensitive to kinetic change in one or …

Positive Youth Development In Tanzanian Youth: Utility Of The Developmental Assets Approach, Christopher Fox Drescher Jan 2015

Positive Youth Development In Tanzanian Youth: Utility Of The Developmental Assets Approach, Christopher Fox Drescher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers and practitioners are increasingly interested in positive youth development (PYD), an approach that emphasizes the competencies, strengths, and responsibilities of youth from all backgrounds. This paradigm may be especially useful in research with international youth given the paucity of research on international populations and the stigma surrounding research that focuses on deficits and problem behaviors. I explore youth's developmental strengths using one PYD measure, the Developmental Assets Profile (DAP), within a diverse, national sample of Tanzanian youth. The DAP Total score, Internal and External Assets, and Context Areas all displayed acceptable internal consistencies (.94 ≥ &agr; ≥ .74). Internal …

Please Don't Forget About Me: African American Women, Mississippi, And The History Of Crime And Punishment In Parchman Prison, 1890-1980, Telisha Dionne Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the vast amount of research covering incarcerated men in the southern prison system from the beginning of the nineteenth century to present, the incarceration of women has gone almost unexamined. As the forgotten offender, historians, criminologist, and others interested in Mississippi carceral studies have failed to include a historical study that focuses on the incarceration of African American women in Mississippi. To date, there are two major historical works that explore Mississippi penology and its notorious Parchman Penitentiary. David Oshinsky’s, Worse Than Slavery and William Banks Taylor’s, Down on Parchman Farm, are the two pivotal historical works that examine …

Soil Bacterial Structure And Function Associated With The Invasive Grass Microsteguim Vimineum And Two Native Grasses, Jennifer Kay Bell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil microorganisms play vital roles in biogeochemical cycles and are necessary for maintaining soil health. An invasive plant that alters the structure and function of the soil microbial assemblage could gain an advantage over native plants, enhancing its ability to invade new habitats, alter ecosystem function, and hinder efforts to reestablish native populations. Assays of enzyme activity and next generation sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes were used to assess the soil microbial function and community structure associated with the invasive grass, Microstegium vimineum and two co-occurring native grasses (Dichanthelium boscii and Chasmanthium laxum). Significantly lower enzyme activity was found …

Design, Synthesis And Cannabinoid Receptor Activity Of Benzofuran Ligands, Eric William Bow Jan 2015

Design, Synthesis And Cannabinoid Receptor Activity Of Benzofuran Ligands, Eric William Bow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The endocannabinoid system is a complex homeostatic signaling system controlled through the actions of two g-protein coupled receptors, cannabinoid receptor 1 (cb1) and cannabinoid receptor 2 (cb2). Significant neuronal expression and distribution of cb1 throughout the brain establishes its function as a major synaptic signaling receptor, and in regards to the actions of cannabis sativa, it is the primary mediator of the psychotropic effects of marijuana. Conversely, cb2 expression is confined to microglial cells in the brain and predominantly peripheral immune cells. The expression of cb2 provides a pharmacological basis for the well-documented immunomodulatory effects of cannabis, providing a potential …

Biomolecular Folding Rates As Understood From Single-Reaction-Coordinate Langevin Dynamics And Kramers’ Theory, Md Adnan Kabir Jan 2015

Biomolecular Folding Rates As Understood From Single-Reaction-Coordinate Langevin Dynamics And Kramers’ Theory, Md Adnan Kabir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Langevin dynamics was used to model the folding and unfolding of simple, hairpin-like biomolecules whose ends are attached to laser-trapped beads, as occurs in optical tweezers experiments. The Langevin process was evolved numerically, using parameters motivated by real experimental systems. Folding trajectories were generated and analyzed to extract the folding rate as a function of the force applied to the beads. The observed rate was compared to the analytical predictions of Kramers' theory. Strong discrepancies were noted. The failure of the Kramers' theory was attributed to the slow dynamical response of the beads, which it does not account for. The …
