Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics During A Phytoplankton Bloom In The Ross Sea Polyna, Bastien Y. Queste, Karen J. Heywood, Walker O. Smith Jr., Daniel E. Kaufman, Timothy D. Jickells, Michael S. Dinniman Jan 2015

Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics During A Phytoplankton Bloom In The Ross Sea Polyna, Bastien Y. Queste, Karen J. Heywood, Walker O. Smith Jr., Daniel E. Kaufman, Timothy D. Jickells, Michael S. Dinniman

CCPO Publications

The Ross Sea polynya is one of the most productive regions in the Southern Ocean. However, limited access and high spatio-temporal variability of physical and biological processes limit the use of conventional oceanographic methods to measure early season primary productivity. High-resolution observations from two Seagliders provide insights into the timing of a bloom in the southern Ross Sea polynya in December 2010. Changes in chlorophyll and oxygen concentrations are used to assess bloom dynamics. Using a ratio of dissolved oxygen to carbon, net primary production is estimated over the duration of the bloom showing a sensitive balance between net autotrophy …

Mechanisms Of Satiation In The Nudibranch Melibe Leonina, Colin Lee Jan 2015

Mechanisms Of Satiation In The Nudibranch Melibe Leonina, Colin Lee

Master's Theses and Capstones

In recent years, scientists have begun to study satiation as a means of understanding changes in motivational state. Satiated animals not only show a reduction in feeding behaviors, but also in locomotion, and even show changes in their responses to various stimuli. Therefore, satiation is a qualitative change in the behavioral state of an animal. Although the behavioral characteristics of satiation are well understood, as are the changes in hormone release following a meal, the neural correlates of satiation are less understood. In particular, few studies have attempted to determine how satiating signals reconfigure feeding neural networks. To begin to …

Investigation Of Resin Regeneration In The Suspended Ion Exchange (Six®) System, Jihyon Im Jan 2015

Investigation Of Resin Regeneration In The Suspended Ion Exchange (Six®) System, Jihyon Im

Master's Theses and Capstones

This research investigated 1) evaluation and optimization of the SIX® anion exchange regeneration efficiency and 2) compatibility of cation exchange for hardness removal and shared-regeneration with the current anion exchange regenerant. The first objective was addressed by comparing the effects of three variables on desorption efficiencies: regenerant volume, salt concentration, and contact time. Sorption studies were performed to quantify resin blinding, and removal kinetics were established and compared. The second part of this research tested a strong acid cation resin for softening performance and regenerability with sodium chloride regenerant.

Inefficient DOC and nitrate desorption were observed as larger regenerant volume …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objectives—To characterize antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence across different programmes and examine the relationship between individual and programme characteristics and incomplete adherence among ART clients in sub-Saharan Africa.

Design—A cross-sectional study.

Methods—Systematically selected ART clients (≥18 years; on ART ≥6 months) attending 18 facilities in three countries (250 clients/facility) were interviewed. Client self-reports (3-day, 30-day, Case Index ≥48 consecutive hours of missed ART), healthcare provider estimates and the pharmacy medication possession ratio (MPR) were used to estimate ART adherence. Participants from two facilities per country underwent HIV RNA testing. Optimal adherence measures were selected on the basis of degree of association …

A Functional Approach To Copyright Policy, Robert E. Suggs Jan 2015

A Functional Approach To Copyright Policy, Robert E. Suggs

Faculty Scholarship

This essay results from a half-century spent observing the development and stagnation of a once vital music form, jazz. Curiosity spurred its evolution when a successor to John Coltrane failed to emerge within a few years of his early death. Over the ensuing decades, I became concerned that advancing technology and the 1976 Copyright Act had fundamentally undermined our cultural ecology.

Unnoticed over the past century, technology has changed our experience of expressive culture, (the stories, images, and melodies that copyright most strongly protects), from live performance in social settings to solitary consumption of recorded media. Neurologically and physiologically this …

Purposeful Gaming: Crowdsourcing The Correction Of Ocred Text In Biodiversity Heritage, Marty Schlabach

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of scanned text enables full-text searching. Unfortunately, OCR software does not produce 100% accurate representation of the text, especially with older works having varying fonts, odd layouts and ink bleed-through. Led by Missouri Botanical Garden, and partnering with New York Botanical Garden, Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology and Cornell, an IMLS-funded project has developed 2 games to engage the public in correcting inaccurately OCRed text in BHL.

Remaking Nature In Montana: Topophilic Considerations Of Wolves And Wolf Trapping, Andrew Myers Jan 2015

Remaking Nature In Montana: Topophilic Considerations Of Wolves And Wolf Trapping, Andrew Myers

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In 2011, after nearly forty years of federal protection, the gray wolf was removed from the Endangered Species List in Montana and its management entrusted to the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. The implementation of public trapping seasons in 2012 as a method to control wolf populations has further inflamed an already embroiled debate. The purpose of this research was to investigate how the presence of wolves and wolf trapping impacts human attachments to landscapes of “nature” in Montana by focusing on the following questions: What are the public’s social constructions of wolves? What are the public’s social constructions of …
