Public Land & Resources Law Review

In addition to stocking grocery stores and restaurants with beef, chicken and milk, CAFOs generate another product—manure. The EPA’s decision to withdraw a proposed rule compelling CAFOs to provide information to aid the agency in regulating their discharge of pollutants into the waters of the United States was upheld by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. The court concluded that the EPA’s decision was “adequately explained” and “coherent,” supported by the administrative record, and did not conflict with existing law.

Illicit Drugs: Should They Be Legalized? Can Technology And Regulation Make Them Safer?, Max Lee Ketcham Iii

University Honors Program

For many years America has been the leading force in substance prohibition. Many countries blindly follow the USA in an attempt to earn their respect. As a result, very few countries actually know what uses these illicit substances have; before it ever reached the hands of the right people, the wrong people take it, use it incorrectly, and leave a bad name on that substance forever. If people could slander a substance, America would end up being found the main conspirator in the slanderous lies and misconceptions! This study has been done in an attempt to clear the name of …

Concussions Related To Football, Jerry Stephen

University Honors Program

Concussions are a major problem in football. They cause short and long term problems. Much is known about the causes of concussions in football, little is yet known about how to truly really decrease the amount of concussions and the effects a concussion really has on an individual, I propose to look at efforts being put in remaking helmets, physiological effects on the brain, and the long term behavioral and emotional effects of concussions. There is an ongoing research to solve the concussion in football. Scientists are learning about the physiological effects on the brain and the long term emotion …

Convergence Of Microbial Assimilations Of Soil Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorus And Sulfur In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Xiaofeng Xu, Dafeng Hui, Anthony W. King, Xia Song, Peter E. Thornton, Lihua Zhang

Biology Faculty Research

How soil microbes assimilate carbon-C, nitrogen-N, phosphorus-P and sulfur-S is fundamental for understanding nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. We compiled a global database of C, N, P and S concentrations in soils and microbes and developed relationships between them by using a power function model. The C:N:P:S was estimated to be 287:17:1:0.8 for soils and 42:6:1:0.4 for microbes. We found a convergence of the relationships between elements in soils and in soil microbial biomass across C, N, P and S. The element concentrations in soil microbial biomass follow a homeostatic regulation curve with soil element concentrations across C, N, P …

The Population History Of The Philippines: A Genetic Overview, Frederick C. Delfin

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

This professorial address synthesizes the findings of several studies on the genetics of Philippine population groups and presents them in a manner accessible to nonspecialists. These studies examined different types of DNA (Y-chromosome, mitochondrial, and autosomal) samples contributed by participants in twelve regional centers and nineteen ethnolinguistic groups. The data reveal (a) genetic affinities with different groups in the Asia-Pacific region, (b) genetic signals of ancient demographic events, (c) an ancient genetic history of about 5,000–50,000 years ago, and (d) a complex population genetic structure. This genetic overview has implications for the study of human history, forensics, and medicine. Keywords: DNA …

Philippine Kinship And Social Organization From The Perspective Of Historical Linguistics, Maria Kristina Gallego Nov 2015

Philippine Kinship And Social Organization From The Perspective Of Historical Linguistics, Maria Kristina Gallego

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Based on a reconstruction of Proto-Philippine kinship and social organization terminologies, thisarticle characterizes early Philippine kinship as bilateral with possible quasi-lineages. These features support the reconstruction of the Proto–Malayo-Polynesian system made by George Peter Murdock (1949) rather than that of Robert Blust (1980). In terms of leadership, the early Philippine community is described as dualistic in nature, allowing achieved and ascribed or hereditary chiefdom—thus deviating from the ancestral concept of hereditary leadership in the Proto–Malayo-Polynesian system. Changes in the Philippine kinship system are traced to show innovations in nomenclature and behavior toward certain kin. Keywords: historical linguistics • cultural reconstruction • …

The human body comes in all shapes and sizes. Each different body shape allows onlookers to evaluate at least some aspects of the subject’s lifestyle and priorities. All eras choose a body type that they exalt above the rest. The goal of this research is to evaluate the considered ideal body type from three different eras in order to better understand these time periods and their values. A compilation of books and journal articles were used from the Cunningham Memorial Library Database, the library itself, and other personal libraries to better understand this topic. The most pertinent question was what …

American Culture’S Impact On Gender And The Perpetuation Of A Gender Binary, Anna Blaho Nov 2015

American Culture’S Impact On Gender And The Perpetuation Of A Gender Binary, Anna Blaho

University Honors Program

This thesis explores the origins of American culture’s fixation on gender being a dichotomous concept. Through the analysis of previous research surrounding the subject of gender roles, expectations, and stereotypes, contributors to this restrictive mind frame as well as reinforcing agents were recognized. Historical trends have demonstrated the assignment of clear and separate tasks to the genders, which in turn created differentiated experiences and opportunities presented to each gender. Facilitated by the historical basis, American culture emulated similar patterns that instilled inflexible conceptions about gender to the point where it has created a discriminate workplace environment. As a consequence of …

The Effect Of Ultralow-Dose Antibiotics Exposure On Soil Nitrate And N2o Flux, Stephanie L. Devries, Madeline Loving, Xiqing Li, Pengfei Zhang Nov 2015

The Effect Of Ultralow-Dose Antibiotics Exposure On Soil Nitrate And N2o Flux, Stephanie L. Devries, Madeline Loving, Xiqing Li, Pengfei Zhang

Publications and Research

Exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics has been shown to alter the metabolic activity of micro-organisms, but the impact on soil denitrification and N2O production has rarely been reported. In this study, incubation and column transport experiments were conducted on soils exposed to as many as four antibiotics in the ng·kg−1 range (several orders of magnitude below typical exposure rates) to evaluate the impact of ultralow dose exposure on net nitrate losses and soil N2O flux over time. Under anaerobic incubation conditions, three antibiotics produced statistically significant dose response curves in which denitrification was stimulated at some doses and inhibited …

Mercury In Coniferous And Deciduous Upland Forests In Northern New England, Usa: Implications Of Climate Change, J. B. Richardson, A. J. Friedland

Dartmouth Scholarship

Climatic changes in the northeastern US are expected to cause coniferous stands to transition to deciduous stands over the next hundred years. Mercury (Hg) sequestration in forest soils may change as a result. In order to understand potential effects of such a transition, we studied aboveground vegetation and soils at paired coniferous and deciduous stands on eight mountains in Vermont and New Hampshire, USA.

Rights, Solidarity, And The Animal Welfare State, Jes L. Harfeld Nov 2015

Rights, Solidarity, And The Animal Welfare State, Jes L. Harfeld

Between the Species

This article argues that aspects of the animal rights view can be constructively modulated through a communitarian approach and come to promote animal welfare through the social contexts of expanded caring communities. The Nordic welfare state is presented as a conceivable caring community within which animals could be viewed and treated appropriately as co-citizens with solidarity based rights and duties.

Actin Filaments Target The Oligomeric Maturation Of The Dynamin Gtpase Drp1 To Mitochondrial Fission Sites, Wei-Ke Ji, Anna L. Hatch, Ronald A. Merrill, Stefan Strack, Henry N. Higgs Nov 2015

Actin Filaments Target The Oligomeric Maturation Of The Dynamin Gtpase Drp1 To Mitochondrial Fission Sites, Wei-Ke Ji, Anna L. Hatch, Ronald A. Merrill, Stefan Strack, Henry N. Higgs

Dartmouth Scholarship

While the dynamin GTPase Drp1 plays a critical role during mitochondrial fission, mechanisms controlling its recruitment to fission sites are unclear. A current assumption is that cytosolic Drp1 is recruited directly to fission sites immediately prior to fission. Using live-cell microscopy, we find evidence for a different model, progressive maturation of Drp1 oligomers on mitochondria through incorporation of smaller mitochondrially-bound Drp1 units. Maturation of a stable Drp1 oligomer does not forcibly lead to fission. Drp1 oligomers also translocate directionally along mitochondria. Ionomycin, a calcium ionophore, causes rapid mitochondrial accumulation of actin filaments followed by Drp1 accumulation at the fission site, …

Crafting Material Innovation, Danielle Wilde, Jenny Underwood, Rebecca Pohlner Nov 2015

Crafting Material Innovation, Danielle Wilde, Jenny Underwood, Rebecca Pohlner

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

When designing material interactions using digital and other technologies, ideation and development timelines can go out of sync. In this paper we discuss how a crafts-driven approach to wearable technologies can sensitise researchers to novel ways of moving forward when faced with such a challenge. We identify ‘no-tech’ prototyping as a powerful paradigm for ideating wearable technologies when the technologies are not yet specified or available; and we describe four craft-based conceptual lenses – an approach, expression, dialogue and language – that support the development of no-tech prototypes at a range of resolutions. The Poetic Kinaesthetic Interface project (PKI) serves …

Why Making Matters: An Exploration Of Neuro- Biological Perspectives On Woodcarving, Marte S. Gulliksen Nov 2015

Why Making Matters: An Exploration Of Neuro- Biological Perspectives On Woodcarving, Marte S. Gulliksen

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

In this paper I begin unpacking the woodcarver’s experiences of working in green wood from a neurobiological perspective. The woodcarver’s experiences are often characterized as having an intense internal focus and an urge to overcome resistance. Previous research hasdiscussed this overcoming of resistance as a preconscious and a conscious negotiation between maker and material. Recent research on neurobiology has increased our knowledge on the basic nervous system in humans. The aim of this paper is to try to bring together current neurobiological descriptions of the basis of what the wood carver do and experience. It is asserted that neurobiological knowledge …

Epistemic Mutations: Material Object Engagement In Exhibition Making, Ane Pilegaard Nov 2015

Epistemic Mutations: Material Object Engagement In Exhibition Making, Ane Pilegaard

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The paper investigates how experimental design practices in pre-exhibition object handling can unfold the materially embedded knowledge production of museum objects. Even though material objects are recognized as key elements in museum practice, concerns for their specific material qualities, such as texture, color, weight, etc., seldom function as primary drivers during the curating and design phases in exhibition making. This is partly due to preservation issues – the fact that direct object handling must be limited – but is also a result of dominating textual practices. This paper argues that, if the materially embedded knowledge of museum objects is to …

Counterculture, Ju-Jitsu And Emancipation Of Wood, Marcin WóJcik Nov 2015

Counterculture, Ju-Jitsu And Emancipation Of Wood, Marcin WóJcik

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper sets out to formulate the notion of material-oriented design in wood. In this respect I propose an alternative ontology, where the material is seen as an equal rights partner to the designer. Further, I contrast the constructivist and evolutionary types of management, where in the latter systems are produced with minimal waste and energy expense. I discuss the implications of the approach on an example of five experimental projects, including my own in more detail. I advance that material-oriented design challenges the established form-matter relationship, design process, our understanding of authorship and bears an environmentally friendly potential.

Madec: Exploring New Methodologies To Transfer Material Knowledge Into Design Disciplines, Chiara Lecce Nov 2015

Madec: Exploring New Methodologies To Transfer Material Knowledge Into Design Disciplines, Chiara Lecce

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Due to the increased complexity of materials and production processes, the responsibility of the development of a design is often left in the hands of technicians and production personnel. This lack of knowledge about materials thus effectively creates a barrier between the designer and the product. Bridging this gap represents a challenge to designers and especially to the design schools. (Bak-Andersen 2013, p.69) Designers cannot know everything but they can open their minds and develop a more conscious understanding of this new field of design practice starting from a cultural point of view. MADEC is a research group based in …

Materia Prima: The Rough Guide, Megan Walch Nov 2015

Materia Prima: The Rough Guide, Megan Walch

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper describes a suite of ten paintings titled The Rough Guide and discusses them as an alternative form of cartography that maps subjectivity in flux. It is an autoethnographic account of the material performativity of paint and the interplay between base materiality, chemical interactions and my improvised embodied action. This echoes the ancient alchemical practice where transformation of substance became transformation of self: in alchemy the perfection of Man was aimed at unity with Divine nature. The Rough Guide suite forms the central component of a studio based PhD investigation titled Viscosity, Fluidity, Plasticity: Reworking Pictorial Conventions in Paint, …
