The Physiological Effects And Projected Outcomes Of Urbanization And Pollution On Reptiles, Dale Rodney Lockman
The Physiological Effects And Projected Outcomes Of Urbanization And Pollution On Reptiles, Dale Rodney Lockman
University Honors College
Research regarding urbanization and its relationship with population fluctuations and physiological responses in animals has been assessed through a multitude of studies involving stress hormone changes, white blood cell counts and other physical and behavioral changes. The scope of this paper emphasizes the explanation of urbanization, the physiological and anatomical impact it has made on reptiles, and the projected outcomes urbanization will have in the future. Some questions are brought up in this paper to serve as a basic overview of what will be learned about urbanization and pollution. In order to provide background information, my research has been conducted …

Southeast Florida Large Coral Assessment 2015, Brian K. Walker, Katelyn Klug
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
The 2013 nearshore mapping project conducted by Walker and Klug expanded the previous knowledge on the amount, location, and species type of ecologically important large (>2 m) coral colonies in southeast Florida. They discovered over 110 previously undocumented large corals of which 60 were dead and 50 were still alive; 40 of the living corals were larger than 2 m wide and up to 5 m in diameter. Because these corals are the largest and oldest organisms on our reefs, they deserve special attention.
Currently there is unprecedented disease and bleaching in the northern portion of the Florida Reef …

Livestock Production, Climate Change, And Human Health: Closing The Awareness Gap, Debra L. L. Donahue
Faculty Articles
Livestock should be removed from public lands for myriad reasons Eliminating what is now extensive grazing by ruminants would cut methane emissions with attendant benefits for climate mitigation Removing livestock from public lands also mirrors federal nutrition policy particularly the recommendation to eat less red meat Much of the degraded environmental conditions on public lands and waters caused by ruminant grazing would end thereby enabling improvement or even recovery Finally undertaking this policy shift would make fiscal sense by saving taxpayer dollars

If Your Eye Causes You is a lyric essay (also known as a mosaic or hybrid essay) that explores sexuality, religion, family, and psychology through a series of prose poem fragments. The speaker blends psychological theory, theological speculation, humorous graphics, biological facts, and personal experience in order to open up a reflective space in which questions about the nature of love, the problem of evil, widespread cultural misogyny, and sexual repression are developed within a unique juxtaposition of diverse literary forms.

Habitat selection is a hierarchical process that may involve different patterns depending on the spatial and temporal scales of investigation. We studied habitat selection by European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in a very diverse environment in the Italian eastern Alps, during summer. We sampled both coarse-grained habitat variables (topographic variables, habitat types and cover) and fine-grained habitat variables (forage components of habitat) in used and available locations along the movement trajectories of 14 adult roe deer equipped with GPS telemetry collars. We used conventional logistic regression to assess roe deer habitat selection at the seasonal home range scale, …

Phenolic Rich Extracts Obtained From Small Red Beans In Preventing Macrophage Mediated Chronic Inflammation, Nidhi Sharma
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Small red beans, commonly called Mexican beans, are a part of the legume family, the genus Phaseolus vulgaris, i.e., dry edible beans or the common bean. In addition to being a rich source of nutrients, small red beans also contain phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, and anthocyanins that have shown a plethora of health benefits against such conditions as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. In particular, the phenolic compounds common to the red beans have been reported to protect against chronic inflammation that if left unchecked can lead to various other chronic degenerative diseases. These …

Distribution Of Herbicide-Resistant Shattercane And Johnsongrass Populations In Sorghum Production Areas Of Nebraska And Northern Kansas, Rodrigo Werle, Amit J. Jhala, Melinda K. Yerka, J. Anita Dille, John L. Lindquist
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Overreliance on acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides for weed control during the 1990s resulted in selection of ALS-resistant shattercane [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench ssp. drummondii (Nees ex Steud.) de Wet ex Davidse] biotypes in Nebraska. The objective of this study was to assess the baseline presence of ALS-resistance in 190 shattercane and 59 johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] populations collected across northern Kansas, northwestern Missouri, and southern Nebraska in 2013. In 2014, a preliminary field experiment was conducted to evaluate the presence of herbicide resistance in the aforementioned populations. Treatments consisted of four herbicides (clethodim {2-[1-[[(E)-3-chloroprop-2-enoxy]amino] propylidene]-5-(2-ethylsulfanylpropyl)cyclohexane-1,3-dione}, glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) …

Hands Up At Home: Militarized Masculinity And Police Officers Who Commit Intimate Partner Abuse, Leigh Goodmark
BYU Law Review
The deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and the almost daily news stories about abusive and violent police conduct are currently prompting questions about the appropriate use of force by police officers. Moreover, the history of police brutality directed towards women is well-documented. Most of that literature, however, captures the violence that police do in their public capacity as officers of the state. This Article examines the violence and abuse perpetrated by police in their private lives, against their intimate partners. Although the public and private overlap, the power and training provided to police officers by the state makes …

Improved Sensitivity To Fluorescence For Cancer Detection In Wide-Field Image-Guided Neurosurgery, Michael Jermyn, Yoann Gosselin, Pablo A. Valdes, Mira Sibai, Kolbein Kolste
Dartmouth Scholarship
In glioma surgery, Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence may identify residual tumor that could be resected while minimizing damage to normal brain. We demonstrate that improved sensitivity for wide-field spectroscopic fluorescence imaging is achieved with minimal disruption to the neurosurgical workflow using an electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) relative to a state-of-the-art CMOS system. In phantom experiments the EMCCD system can detect at least two orders-of-magnitude lower PpIX. Ex vivo tissue imaging on a rat glioma model demonstrates improved fluorescence contrast compared with neurosurgical fluorescence microscope technology, and the fluorescence detection is confirmed with measurements from a clinically-validated spectroscopic probe. Greater PpIX …

Dancing Through Life: Molecular Dynamics Simulations And Network-Centric Modeling Of Allosteric Mechanisms In Hsp70 And Hsp110 Chaperone Proteins, Gabrielle Stetz, Gennady M. Verkhivker
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Hsp70 and Hsp110 chaperones play an important role in regulating cellular processes that involve protein folding and stabilization, which are essential for the integrity of signaling networks. Although many aspects of allosteric regulatory mechanisms in Hsp70 and Hsp110 chaperones have been extensively studied and significantly advanced in recent experimental studies, the atomistic picture of signal propagation and energetics of dynamics-based communication still remain unresolved. In this work, we have combined molecular dynamics simulations and protein stability analysis of the chaperone structures with the network modeling of residue interaction networks to characterize molecular determinants of allosteric mechanisms. We have shown that …

The Mechanisms Of Moral Disengagement In George W. Bush’S “War On Terror” Rhetoric, Stefan Cartledge, Lorraine Bowman-Grieve, Marek Palasinski
The Qualitative Report
Despite considerable literature on the Bush administration’s war on terrorism rhetoric, little attention has been paid to its discourse of moral disengagement, leaving an important and still relevant gap that this paper aims to address. Rather than approaching this gap in terms of an archival historical analysis that is disconnected from the present, it proposes an exploratory revisit of the rhetoric that the benefits of hindsight might enrich and, we argue, aid in understanding connections to the current post-invasion turmoil and the gradual ISIS takeover. Having subjected nineteen presidential speeches to qualitative content analysis, we identified a number of moral …

Step Activity And Stride-To-Stride Fluctuations Are Negatively Correlated In Individuals With Transtibial Amputation, Jenny A. Kent, Nicholas Stergiou, Shane Wurdeman
Journal Articles
Background
Variability occurs naturally from stride to stride in healthy gait. It has been shown that individuals with lower limb loss have significantly increased stride-to-stride fluctuations during walking. This is considered indicative of movement disorganization and is associated with less healthy movement. Given that lower limb prosthesis users perform on average less physical activity than able bodied individuals, the purpose of this study was to determine whether increased fluctuations also correspond to a reduced level of activity in daily life.
Methods
Twenty-two transtibial amputees wore an activity monitor (Actigraph, Pensacola, FL, USA) for 3 weeks. Lower limb kinematics during treadmill …
