As state universities feel economic pinches of reduced support from state legislatures, and as sources of federal funding for supported research projects face additional challenges, other sources of support need to be found. Two sources under consideration are royalties and licensing fees for successful patents. A good example of a successful developer of patents was Jonas Kamlet, Ph.D. (1914‐1960), who was an early consultant in chemical and other matters and was the successful co-owner, with his wife Edna, of the Kamlet Laboratories. The roles that he played in his career can, we believe, provide good examples for contemporary researchers in …

The Time For Design-Based Research Is Right And Right Now, Jennifer K. Shah, David C. Ensminger, Kimberly Their

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The science-to-service problem continues to taunt the field of education (Fixsen, Blasé, Naoom, & Wallace, 2009). As an academic discipline, the field requires knowledge generation that adds to or deepens theoretical understandings. As a profession, knowledge generation that solves local problems and supports continuous improvement is necessary. Using design-based research (DBR) provides a means of serving theoretical and practical needs in education, addressing the complexity of education by informing immediate practice while simultaneously contributing to theoretical understandings in the field of education. Using Stokes’ (1977) model of scientific research and knowledge generation, we situate DBR within Pasteur’s quadrant, describe how …

Self-Reported Race/Ethnicity In The Age Of Genomic Research: Its Potential Impact On Understanding Health Disparities, Tesfaye B. Mersha, Tilahun Abebe

Faculty Work

This review explores the limitations of self-reported race, ethnicity, and genetic ancestry in biomedical research. Various terminologies are used to classify human differences in genomic research including race, ethnicity, and ancestry. Although race and ethnicity are related, race refers to a person’s physical appearance, such as skin color and eye color. Ethnicity, on the other hand, refers to communality in cultural heritage, language, social practice, traditions, and geopolitical factors. Genetic ancestry inferred using ancestry informative markers (AIMs) is based on genetic/genomic data. Phenotype-based race/ethnicity information and data computed using AIMs often disagree. For example, self-reporting African Americans can have drastically …

The results reveal …

Women Of Faith In Science: The Double Glass Ceiling, K. Y. Michael Jan 2015

Women Of Faith In Science: The Double Glass Ceiling, K. Y. Michael

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The majority of female pre-service elementary school teachers pursuing licensure is choosing English as their cognate rather than mathematics or science. The reason females are not choosing science as their cognate may be due to the fact that science has long been considered a masculine pursuit. To complicate the issue, pre-service female teachers of deep religious faith are further challenged to navigate the dichotomy of science and religion. As a result, women, and especially women of deep religious faith, are at risk of not participating in science studies. The author suggests that there is room in the science classroom for …

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

With an increasing demand for individuals prepared in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), one university responded to this call by changing its teacher preparation program. Better-prepared mathematics and science teachers have the opportunity to engage and excite students, thereby preparing and promoting more of them to enter the STEM professions. The described program is a replication of the national UTeach model that recruits content majors in mathematics and science to explore the teaching profession during a first-semester course that includes an early field experience in the elementary grades. This field experience is designed to be engaging for both the …

"If They Hand You A Paper, You Sign It": A Call To End The Sterilization Of Women In Prison, Rachel Roth, Sara L. Ainsworth Jan 2015

"If They Hand You A Paper, You Sign It": A Call To End The Sterilization Of Women In Prison, Rachel Roth, Sara L. Ainsworth

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

A 2013 investigative report on California prisons exposed the recent use of coercive tactics to induce women in prison in that state to undergo sterilization surgeries to permanently end their fertility. This is particularly striking given California's infamous history as the state that forcibly sterilized the largest number of people during the eugenics era. But California is not the only state that permits, condones, and may use public money to sterilize women in prison. This article begins with a consideration of the history of eugenic sterilization, and its troubling revival against the very women-women of color and poor women- who …

Infants In Orange: An International Model-Based Approach Prison Nurseries, Jennifer Warner Jan 2015

Infants In Orange: An International Model-Based Approach Prison Nurseries, Jennifer Warner

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Prison nurseries are used throughout the world as a way to strengthen the initial mother-child bond and ensure that mothers are given a chance to raise their children, even if it's behind bars. Ms. Warner outlines the differences between prison nurseries in countries like Germany, Colombia, and Kenya, and reveals that the United States is vastly different from the rest. While most countries offer prison nurseries, only nine states within the United States utilize a prison nursery, which means the majority of United States jails and prisons routinely separate newborns from their incarcerated mothers. Ms. Warner urges her readers and …

Forbidden Fruit: Sexual Victimization Of Migrant Workers In America's Farmlands, Christa Conry

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

There is a place in the booming agricultural fields of America's farmlands that carries a terrible history. The fields de calzons, or fields of panties, are where female farmworkers, mostly migrant employees residing in the United States for the harvest, are systematically violated by foremen, colleagues, and other superiors. There are 1.4 million crop workers in the United States. Twenty-four percent of these workers are estimated to be female. A recent report suggests that as many as eighty percent of female farmworkers surveyed are regularly exposed to sexual harassment, assault, and trauma, ranging from continuous sexual advances over years …

© 2015 British Society for Neuroendocrinology. An accumulating body of evidence suggests that the activity of the mineralocorticoid, aldosterone, in the brain via the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) plays an important role in the regulation of blood pressure. MR was recently found in vasopressin and oxytocin synthesising magnocellular neurosecretory cells (MNCs) in both the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei in the hypothalamus. Considering the physiological effects of these hormones, MR in these neurones may be an important site mediating the action of aldosterone in blood pressure regulation within the brain. However, aldosterone activation of MR in the hypothalamus remains controversial …

© 2015 The Authors The Plant Journal © 2015 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Upon nutrient deprivation, microalgae partition photosynthate into starch and lipids at the expense of protein synthesis and growth. We investigated the role of starch biosynthesis with respect to photosynthetic growth and carbon partitioning in the Chlamydomonas reinhardtii starchless mutant, sta6, which lacks ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase. This mutant is unable to convert glucose-1-phosphate to ADP-glucose, the precursor of starch biosynthesis. During nutrient-replete culturing, sta6 does not re-direct metabolism to make more proteins or lipids, and accumulates 20% less biomass. The underlying molecular basis for the decreased biomass phenotype …

© 2015 the American Physiological Society. Proinflammatory cytokines impact islet β-cell mass and function by altering the transcriptional activity within pancreatic β-cells, producing increases in intracellular nitric oxide abundance and the synthesis and secretion of immunomodulatory proteins such as chemokines. Herein, we report that IL-1β, a major mediator of inflammatory responses associated with diabetes development, coordinately and reciprocally regulates chemokine and insulin secretion. We discovered that NF-κB controls the increase in chemokine transcription and secretion as well as the decrease in both insulin secretion and proliferation in response to IL-1β. Nitric oxide production, which is markedly elevated in pancreatic β-cells …

© 2015 Saravia et al. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of infant hospitalizations and severe RSV infections are a significant risk factor for childhood asthma. The pathogenic mechanisms responsible for RSV induced immunopathophysiology remain elusive. Using an age-appropriate mouse model of RSV, we show that IL-33 plays a critical role in the immunopathogenesis of severe RSV, which is associated with higher group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) specifically in neonates. Infection with RSV induced rapid IL-33 expression and an increase in ILC2 numbers in the lungs of neonatal mice; this was not observed in adult mice. …

Mechanistic Species Distribution Modelling As A Link Between Physiology And Conservation, Tyler G. Evans, Sarah E. Diamond, Morgan W. Kelly Jan 2015

Mechanistic Species Distribution Modelling As A Link Between Physiology And Conservation, Tyler G. Evans, Sarah E. Diamond, Morgan W. Kelly

© The Author 2015. Climate change conservation planning relies heavily on correlative species distribution models that estimate future areas of occupancy based on environmental conditions encountered in present-day ranges. The approach benefits from rapid assessment of vulnerability over a large number of organisms, but can have poor predictive power when transposed to novel environments and reveals little in the way of causal mechanisms that define changes in species distribution or abundance. Having conservation planning rely largely on this single approach also increases the risk of policy failure. Mechanistic models that are parameterized with physiological information are expected to be more …
