Strong Recruitment From Sparse Plug Plantings Of Native California Bunchgrasses, Truman P. Young, Kari E. Veblen
Strong Recruitment From Sparse Plug Plantings Of Native California Bunchgrasses, Truman P. Young, Kari E. Veblen
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Grassland restoration efforts in California include plug planting or direct seeding of native perennial grasses. These plantings are usually installed at densities intended to achieve full cover of mature plants from the planted individuals, not relying on recruitment of their progeny. Recruitment of future generations would both be reassuring for the long-term success of projects and an indication that lower density plantings might be sufficient, but restoration monitoring rarely looks for recruitment in later years (see Morgan 1999).

Coral islands around the world are threatened by changing climates. Rising seas, drought, and increased tropical storms are already impacting island ecosystems. We aim to better understand lichen community ecology of coral island forests. We used an epiphytic lichen community survey to gauge Pisonia (Pisonia grandis R.BR.), which dominates forest conditions on Heron Island, Australia. Nine survey plots were sampled for lichen species presence and abundance, all tree diameters and species, GPS location, distance to forest-beach edge, and dominant forest type. Results found only six unique lichens and two lichen associates. A Multi-Response Permutation Procedures (MRPP) test found statistically distinct …

Effects Of Food Elimination, Based On Alcat Testing, On Inflammatory Markers, Body Composition, And Medical Symptoms, Jodi Marie Hoppensteadt
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Background: Growing evidence suggests that systemic inflammation and obesity are associated. Lifestyle changes such as dietary modification may be beneficial in reducing obesity-related chronic inflammation and its related disease states. Conversely, inflammation may be exacerbated by food intolerance(s). Therefore, it is important to determine if dietary modifications have an effect on inflammatory markers, body composition or medical symptoms. Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine whether an elimination diet plan, based on ALCAT testing, influenced inflammatory response, body composition and medical symptoms. Conclusions: These results suggest that the elimination of inflammatory foods had a positive impact on SAA, …

What follows is a fictional account. Our “characters” bear our real names; the other eight are composites of students we have taught and from whom we have learned; activists with whom we have worked; and staff, faculty, and administrators we have trained in venues such as Safe Zone. We portray our ally (Lisa)-lesbian (Kathryn) relationship this way for two reasons: one, we had not secured permission from real students, colleagues, or community members to represent their lives and experiences, and two, we seek a way to show our partnership, both personal and professional since 2000, in action. To each of …

The Genetic Architecture Of Fluctuating Asymmetry Of Mandible Size And Shape In A Population Of Mice: Another Look, James M. Cheverud, Larry J. Leamy, Christian Peter Klingenberg, Emma Sherratt, Jason B. Wolf
Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), typically measured by variation in the differences between right and left sides of bilateral traits, is commonly used to assess developmental instability (DI) in populations. A previous quantitative trait locus (QTL) investigation using an F2 intercross mouse population found little evidence of individual loci affecting FA in mandible size, but an abundance of epistatic interactions between loci. Here we extend this work by testing whether these patterns replicate in an F3 population derived from the same intercross. Using a large number of molecular markers genotyped in over 1200 mice, we uncovered significant interactions between loci (QTLs) affecting …

Establishment Of Biotrophy By The Maize Anthracnose Pathogen Colletotrichum Graminicola: Use Of Bioinformatics And Transcriptomics To Address The Potential Roles Of Secretion, Stress Response, And Secreted Proteins, Ester Alvarenga Santos Buiate
Theses and Dissertations--Plant Pathology
Colletotrichum graminicola is a hemibiotrophic pathogen of maize that causes anthracnose leaf and stalk rot diseases. The pathogen penetrates the host and initially establishes an intracellular biotrophic infection, in which the hyphae are separated from the living host cell by a membrane that is elaborated by the host, apparently in response to pathogen signals. A nonpathogenic mutant (MT) of C. graminicola was generated that germinates and penetrates the host normally, but is incapable of establishing a normal biotrophic infection. The mutated gene is Cpr1, conserved in eukaryotes and predicted to encode a component of the signal peptidase complex. How …

Adolescent Oral Health In Kentucky, 2007 National Survey Of Childhood Health Analysis, Kory Brinker
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Research indicates that children raised by their grandparents can have poorer health outcomes than their peers living in mother or father based households. There is, however, little research that indicates how childhood oral health is affected by grandparents raising grandchildren. This study investigated grandparent based family structures, and how this family structure affects oral health of Kentucky children. Using data from the 2007 National Survey of Children’s Health, 113 Kentucky children were identified as living with a grandparent as a primary caregiver. Chi-Square analyses were utilized to assess the oral health status of these children, as well as what role …
Dynamics Of Frequency Swept Sources For Optical Coherence Tomography, Svetlana Slepnava
Dynamics Of Frequency Swept Sources For Optical Coherence Tomography, Svetlana Slepnava
Theses
This thesis aims to analyse the properties of optical coherence tomography swept sources, using fast real-time intensity and phase characterisation techniques for full electric field reconstruction. In the first part, these techniques are applied to analyse a commercial short cavity laser that exhibits mode hopping, sliding frequency mode locking or chaotic dynamical regime depending on the sweep speed and direction Numerical simulations of time-delayed differential equations display similar features and enable an understanding the underlying physics of the coherence properties of these light sources. In the second part of the thesis, a Fourier Domain Mode Locked (FDML) laser is built …

Implementing (Environmental) Justice: Equity And Performance In California's S.B. 535, Meagan Tokunaga
Implementing (Environmental) Justice: Equity And Performance In California's S.B. 535, Meagan Tokunaga
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis evaluates the equity performance of a recent state environmental justice policy, California’s Senate Bill 535 (S.B. 535). “Environmental justice” refers to the disproportionate environmental harm imposed on low-income and minority communities. S.B. 535 uses competitive grants to provide funding to these communities. The research is centered around two questions: (1) to what extent has S.B. 535 experienced successful implementation in its first year of operation, and (2) how can policy actors improve implementation while balancing performance and equity goals? In regards to the first question, I utilize a case study of the policy’s implementation within 17 local governments …
Traditional Surrogacy Contracts, Partial Enforcement, And The Challenge For Family Law, Mark Strasser
Traditional Surrogacy Contracts, Partial Enforcement, And The Challenge For Family Law, Mark Strasser
Journal of Health Care Law and Policy
Surrogacy remains controversial. Several states ban commercial surrogacy while several other states permit it, subject to certain conditions. In addition, many state legislatures simply have not spoken to the legality of surrogacy agreements. Courts have addressed whether such contracts are enforceable in individual instances, either as a matter of public policy or, perhaps, because of a claimed breach of contract.
Part II of this Article traces the development of the jurisprudence regarding the enforcement of surrogacy agreements, noting how there seemed to be a consensus within the parameters set by state law. Part III addresses a few recent decisions in …

Association For Molecular Pathology V. Myriad Genetics, Inc.: Progress By Principles, Emily J. Bolyard
Journal of Health Care Law and Policy
In Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc., the Supreme Court considered whether human genes are patentable under the Patent Act of 1952. Originally enacted in 1790, the Act allows patents to be granted on any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, barring a judicially created exception for laws of nature, natural phenomena, and abstract ideas. These three naturally occurring things are nonpatentable because they create the foundation of scientific and technological work. In Myriad, the Court unanimously held that isolated DNA is nonpatentable, since such DNA is naturally occurring phenomena under the …

We Left Lassie Behind: Defense Personnel Relocation, Animal Abandonment, And Shelter Impacts, Gabriele Griffiths
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
When Department of Defense (DoD) personnel receive orders to relocate to a new duty installation, nearly one third abandon their companion animals, which negatively affects the local shelters' costs, personnel, and capabilities to provide quality care for shelter animals. There is a lack of research on relevant policies among local government policy makers, installation commanders, directors of animal shelters, and animal rights advocates about the abandonment of companion animals by DoD personnel. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to investigate the relationship between the influx of abandoned DoD companion animals and the management and logistical (including financial) …

The Association Between Rheumatoid Arthritis And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Magaly Perez Nieves
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A research report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that more than 50% of people with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the United States (U.S.) also have arthritis. The diabetes population is disproportionately affected by arthritis, but there has been limited and inconsistent research to confirm the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The current study aimed to identify an association between T2DM and RA for noninstitutionalized U.S. adults between 1999 and 2012 using a nationally representative sample from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (n =31,488 ). A …
Shared Trauma: A Phenomenological Investigation Of African American Teachers, Juanita Lynne White
Shared Trauma: A Phenomenological Investigation Of African American Teachers, Juanita Lynne White
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the wake of increasing community disasters such as hurricanes, neighborhood violence, and terrorist attacks, schools are usually deemed places where youth can find safety and stability. Research about community trauma related to the role of teachers and schools has predominantly focused on younger populations, concerned about disturbances in their developmental processes. School teachers' responsibilities related to these community disasters have also increased and now include supporting their traumatized students. However, there has been limited attention on the direct effect of community traumas on the teachers who work and live in affected districts. The construct of shared trauma describes this …

The Relationship Between Science Curriculum Aligned To Common Core State Standards And Scientific Literacy, Amber Lee Struthers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Supporting the development of scientifically literate students is a priority in public school education, and understanding how that development is influenced by the Common Core State Standards is vital to quality science education. However, little quantitative research has been conducted about how the Common Core State Standards impact science education. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine how the alignment of science curriculum and instruction to the Common Core English Language Arts State Standards impacts the development of students' scientific literacy skills. Bybee's framework for scientific literacy provided the theoretical framework. Participants included 7 middle school students in …

Precompetitive anxiety (PCA) is problematic for young gymnasts and may have an influence on a multitude of factors like self-confidence, perceived level of self-efficacy, and athlete's performance in a competition. The objective of this 2-part study was to discover how earlier competitive experience influences the young gymnasts' level of anxiety, perception of control, and self-efficacy. An additional goal was to explore the potential impact of Guided imagery (GI) and Autogenic training (AGT) in reducing precompetitive anxiety. In the first study, 80 USAG Junior Olympic female gymnasts between the ages of 7 and 16 (40 compulsory level and 40 optional level) …
Determinants Of Social Disorganization As Predictors Of Illicit Drug Use During Recessionary Years, Daniel Kirk Westmoreland
Determinants Of Social Disorganization As Predictors Of Illicit Drug Use During Recessionary Years, Daniel Kirk Westmoreland
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research suggests evidence of an association between sociodemographic determinants and illicit drug use. However, these data do not take into consideration the effect an economic obstacle, such as a recession, could have on an individual's urge to cope with this stressful period with illicit drugs. Furthermore, there is no research to suggest how clinicians and/or treatment institutions can forecast whether the use of monetary resources will be sustainable due to private and/or governmental fund reductions during an economic recession. Based on theories of social learning and social disorganization within an ecological framework, this study employed a quantitative trend analysis to …
Health Care Seeking Behavior And Provider Responses For Hcv-Positive African Americans, Kathleen Susanna Bailey
Health Care Seeking Behavior And Provider Responses For Hcv-Positive African Americans, Kathleen Susanna Bailey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Of the 3.5 million persons infected with chronic HCV in the United States, the African American population is the largest racial group with chronic HCV. Disparities in access to care and treatment involve a complex set of individual, interpersonal, socioeconomic, and environmental factors that influence the course of HCV infection in the African American population, resulting in poorer outcomes and survival. Drawing upon both the theory of reasoned action and the theory of planned behavior, this study was conducted to determine whether the seeking of health care by HCV-positive African Americans and the responses of health care providers to HCV-positive …

The Influence Of Demographics And Cultural Attitudes On Sexual Orientation Attitudes In African American Adults., Bernadette Dawn Harrell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African Americans who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) are discriminated against in the African American community. Sociodemographics such as income, education, age, and religion/spirituality have been shown to be associated with sexual prejudice. There is limited research on how African American cultural attitudes influence attitudes towards sexual orientation. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which demographic variables and African American cultural attitudes (measured by the African American Acculturation Scale-Revised; AAAS-R) predict attitudes toward sexual orientation in African American adults (measured by the Attitudes towards Lesbians and Gay Men Scale; ATLG). Social identity …
Raising Texas State Biology Exam Achievement Scores For Students With Disabilities, Nancy Kay Larkin
Raising Texas State Biology Exam Achievement Scores For Students With Disabilities, Nancy Kay Larkin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The No Child Left Behind Act changed the way educators taught students with disabilities (SWD), as this population has now become part of all districts' annual yearly progress. The problem this qualitative study addressed was that many biology teachers in a Texas suburban district were not effectively implementing evidence-based strategies for SWD. The study's conceptual foundation was based on Vygotsky's cognitive development theory that students achieve at higher levels when working in their zone of proximal development with support from peers or adults. The guiding question was intended to determine what strategies biology teachers were using to provide this support …
Middle School Teachers' Experiences With Cross-Curricular Connections At The Incident Level, Melita M. Penchalk
Middle School Teachers' Experiences With Cross-Curricular Connections At The Incident Level, Melita M. Penchalk
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many curricular innovations, including cross-curricular teaching, are started in schools without adequate teacher preparation and support, reducing the effectiveness of the interventions in supporting student learning. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe the implementation of the cross-curricular connections teaching technique in middle schools. Research questions focused on how middle school teachers experienced implementation of cross-curricular teaching at the incident level and how teachers perceived cross-curricular teaching and its long-term value. Myers-Briggs personality type theory informed the study, supporting the postulation that teachers are more comfortable teaching from their personality types. Data from 10 middle school teachers …
Effect Of Sleep On Vigilance, Short-Term Memory, And Learning In College Students, Ayesha Uddin
Effect Of Sleep On Vigilance, Short-Term Memory, And Learning In College Students, Ayesha Uddin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite years of research supporting a link between sleep and cognitive functioning, little research has focused on the effect of sleep on cognitive factors in the college population. According to the trace reactivation hypothesis, sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation and learning. Cognitivism further indicates that the processing of information is limited when sleep is restricted. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the effect of sleep on vigilance, short-term memory, and learning; an additional goal was to test whether these variables influence grade point average (GPA). Sleep and GPA data were collected using self-report questionnaires. …
