Serum Cotinine And Chronic Pain: Nhanes 2003-2004, R Constance Wiener
Serum Cotinine And Chronic Pain: Nhanes 2003-2004, R Constance Wiener
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Purpose—Tobacco smoke exposure continues to be the leading preventable risk factor for many diseases and has the potential to be a risk factor for chronic pain. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship of chronic pain with smoking, secondhand smoke exposure and nonsmoking using serum cotinine (and self-report of living with someone who smokes in the home) to identify the tobacco exposure groups. Methods—The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2004 was used for this study. Participants were queried about pain duration and had serum cotinine levels determined during the course of the NHANES examination/survey. Participants, …
John L. Sorenson’S Complete Legacy: Reviewing Mormon’S Codex, Brant A. Gardner, Mark Alan Wright
John L. Sorenson’S Complete Legacy: Reviewing Mormon’S Codex, Brant A. Gardner, Mark Alan Wright
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Mormon’s Codex: An Ancient American Book is unquestionably a monument to an impressive career defending, defining, and explaining the Book of Mormon. John L. Sorenson has been for the New World setting of the Book of Mormon what Hugh Nibley was for the Old World setting. From his earliest 1952 publications using anthropology and geography to defend the Book of Mormon to the 2013 publication of Mormon’s Codex, Sorenson has been the dominant force in shaping scholarly discussions about the Book of Mormon in its New World setting.1 With an impressive 714 pages of text with footnotes, Mormon’s Codex is …

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Sophomore-Level Biology Majors, Leigh Thompson, Lisa Ann Blankenship
Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Sophomore-Level Biology Majors, Leigh Thompson, Lisa Ann Blankenship
Collier Library and Information Services
Many undergraduate students lack a sound understanding of information literacy. The skills that comprise information literacy are particularly important when combined with scientific writing for biology majors as they are the foundation skills necessary to complete upper-division biology course assignments, better train students for research projects, and prepare students for graduate and professional education. To help undergraduate biology students develop and practice information literacy and scientific writing skills, a series of three one-hour hands-on library sessions, discussions, and homework assignments were developed for Biological Literature, a one-credit, one-hour-per-week, required sophomore-level course. The embedded course librarian developed a learning exercise that …

The Medical Cost Pandemic: Why Limiting Access To Cost-Effective Treatments Hurts The Global Poor, Govind Persad
The Medical Cost Pandemic: Why Limiting Access To Cost-Effective Treatments Hurts The Global Poor, Govind Persad
Chicago Journal of International Law
Medical innovation in developed countries like the U.S. leads to an ever-changing medical standard of care. This innovation frequently also brings rising costs. While these costs strain even the sizeable health care budgets of developed countries, imposing them on developing countries would be much more burdensome. Yet a variety of commentators and legal actors, such as the World Health OrganiZation and UNAIDS, have argued that the same standards of care must be provided worldwide, and have enforced mandates to that effect. Interpretations of the human right to health as a tight to the "highest attainable standard of health" similarly advance …

A New Approach To Assessing Affect And The Emotional Implications Of Personal Genomic Testing For Common Disease Risk, Suzanne C. O'Neill, Kenneth P. Tercyak, Chanza Baytop, Sharon Hensley Alford, Colleen M. Mcbride
Public Health Sciences Articles
Aims: Personal genomic testing (PGT) for common disease risk is becoming increasingly frequent, but little is known about people's array of emotional reactions to learning their genomic risk profiles and the psychological harms/benefits of PGT. We conducted a study of post-PGT affect, including positive, neutral, and negative states that may arise after testing.
Methods: A total of 228 healthy adults received PGT for common disease variants and completed a semistructured research interview within 2 weeks of disclosure. The study participants reported how the PGT results made them feel in their own words. Using an iterative coding process, the responses were …
Enhanced Vulnerability To Tobacco Use In Persons With Diabetes: A Behavioral And Neurobiological Framework, Laura O'Dell
Enhanced Vulnerability To Tobacco Use In Persons With Diabetes: A Behavioral And Neurobiological Framework, Laura O'Dell
Departmental Papers (Psych)
Tobacco use significantlymagnifies the negative health complications associatedwith diabetes. Although tobacco use is strongly discouraged in personswith diabetes, clinical evidence suggests that they often continue to smoke and have more difficulty quitting despite serious contraindications. Here, we suggest that a potential reason for enhanced vulnerability to tobacco use in persons with diabetes is greater rewarding effects of nicotine. This review summarizes pre-clinical evidence indicating that the rewarding effects of nicotine are enhanced in rodent models of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. We also provide a framework of neurobiological mechanisms that are posited to promote tobacco use in personswith diabetes. …
Nicotine Withdrawal Increases Stress- Associated Genes In The Nucleus Accumbens Of Female Rats In A Hormone-Dependent Manner, Laura O'Dell
Nicotine Withdrawal Increases Stress- Associated Genes In The Nucleus Accumbens Of Female Rats In A Hormone-Dependent Manner, Laura O'Dell
Departmental Papers (Psych)
Introduction: Previous work led to our hypothesis that sex differences produced by nicotine withdrawal are modulated by stress and dopamine systems in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). We investigated our hypothesis by studying intact females to determine whether the mechanisms that promote withdrawal are ovarian-hormone mediated. Methods: Female rats were ovariectomized (OVX) or received sham surgery (intact) on postnatal day (PND 45–46). On PND 60, they received sham surgery (controls) or were prepared with nicotine pumps. Fourteen days later, half of the rats had their pumps removed (nicotine withdrawal) and the other half received sham surgery (nicotine exposure). Twenty-four hours later, …
Stress Is A Principal Factor That Promotes Tobacco Use In Females, Laura O'Dell
Stress Is A Principal Factor That Promotes Tobacco Use In Females, Laura O'Dell
Departmental Papers (Psych)
Tobacco use is a major economic and health problem. It is particularly concerning that women consume more tobacco products, have a more difficult time quitting smoking, and are less likely to benefit fromsmoking cessation therapy than men. As a result, women are at higher risk of developing tobacco-related diseases. Clinical evidence suggests that women are more susceptible to anxiety disorders, and are more likely to smoke in order to cope with stress than men. During smoking abstinence, women experience more intense anxiety than men and report that the anxiety-reducing effects of smoking are the main reason for their continued tobacco …
The Induced Heart Rate Response To Fish Kairomones In Daphnia Pulex, Michael J. Culshaw-Maurer
The Induced Heart Rate Response To Fish Kairomones In Daphnia Pulex, Michael J. Culshaw-Maurer
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Daphnia pulex have been shown to respond to kairomones emitted by predatory Chaoborus and planktivorous fish, though these two groups of predators differ significantly in their predation styles. The effects of predation vary across Daphnia size range, and heart rate response to Chaoborus kairomones has been shown to vary across size. I found that heart rate of individuals in the small size class in a clonal population of Daphnia pulex respond more strongly to bluegill (Lepomismacrochirus) kairomones than heart rate of medium or large size classes. The two largest classes showed no difference in heart rate between …
Comparison Of Bacterial Flora In Fish Mucus And Lake Water, Robert W. Thomas
Comparison Of Bacterial Flora In Fish Mucus And Lake Water, Robert W. Thomas
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Although commonly known for their ability to cause deadly infectious diseases, there are populations of bacteria (identified as normal flora) that symbiotically live on and amongst larger host organisms and positively impact survival of the host. In previous research, culturing methods suggest that freshwater fish (i.e. bluegill and northern pike) maintain a normal flora population and that this flora aids in protection and the health of the fish. Our study used Ion torrent PGM sequencing to identify a larger, more complete population of normal flora in 2 different lake samples from three different species of fish. Identifying and comparing the …

Abiotic Habitat Preferences Of Age-0 Paddlefish In Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota During Late Summer, Derek Dufault
Abiotic Habitat Preferences Of Age-0 Paddlefish In Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota During Late Summer, Derek Dufault
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Since the early 1990’s, surface visual counts along transects have been conducted annually, allowing for estimates of relative abundance and year-class strength of age-0 paddlefish Polyodon spathula on the upper portions of Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota. This study focuses on the annual visual surface count data collected over an eleven year period from 2004-2014. More specifically it focuses on abiotic habitat factors (Secchi depth, water depth, and water temperature) and how they relate to age-0 paddlefish locations in late summer. Understanding habitat use during early life stages is imperative, yet to date, there is very limited knowledge available regarding the …
Influence Of Depth And Retrieval Speed On Yellow Perch Barotrauma Recovery Time In Winter, Bradley J. Klingsheim
Influence Of Depth And Retrieval Speed On Yellow Perch Barotrauma Recovery Time In Winter, Bradley J. Klingsheim
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Physoclistous fish are often affected by barotrauma because the swim bladder is not connected to the esophagus. Barotrauma is increasingly being used in assessing mortality in fish brought from deep water. Barotrauma is the physical damage that occurs because of the over inflation of the gas bladder resulting from a rapid decrease in ambient pressure. The two important factors influencing barotrauma effects are water depth and decompression. In this study, two experiments were conducted on yellow perch (Perca flavescens) at three depth locations on Grace Lake, Bemidji, Minnesota. Fish were measured for barotrauma recovery time (s) following capture by hook …

Effect Of A Substance Abuse Intervention Program On Student Achievement At A Midwest University, Terry Russell
Dissertations
Through empirical research, this dissertation examined whether a substance abuse intervention program implemented at a Midwest university could prove beneficial in addressing the problem of substance abuse on college campuses. Drawing on multiple resources, including Department of Education, psychologists, scholars, and other professional sources, this dissertation provides information on the importance of intervention and behavioral adjustment. This study covered statistical data over a two year period on an intervention program including measurements such as: grade point average, attendance, number of months in the program, and degree persistence. A second area of research was directed at determining the effect of the …
Further Description Of Hybridization In The Sea Stars Asterias Rubens And Asterias Forbesi Through The Application Of Species-Specific Genetic Markers, Callie Bateson
Honors Program Theses
Hybridization occurs when two separate species reproduce to form hybrid offspring. If the hybrid offspring backcross with individuals of their parental species, the subsequent offspring may have varying amounts of the parental genomes, if viable. Following the retreat of the Last Glacial Maxima 20,000 years ago, two sea star species, Asterias forbesi and A. rubens came into secondary contact in the Gulf of Maine where they began to hybridize. Previous research in our lab studied the frequency of hybridization at four locations along the east coast (Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Hampshire, and New York) using morphological identifications as well two …
