The use of Raman spectroscopy to measure the biochemical profile of healthy and diseased cells and tissues may be a potential solution to many diagnostic problems in the clinic. Although extensively used to identify changes in the biochemical profiles of cancerous cells and tissue, Raman spectroscopy has been used less often for analyzing changes to the cellular environment by external factors such as ionizing radiation. In tandem with this, the biological impact of low doses of ionizing radiation remains poorly understood. Extensive studies have been performed on the radiobiological effects associated with radiation doses above 0.1 Gy, and are well …

Synthesis And Characterization Of New Probes For Use In Fluorescence And X-Ray Ct Bioimaging, Simon Tang Jan 2015

Synthesis And Characterization Of New Probes For Use In Fluorescence And X-Ray Ct Bioimaging, Simon Tang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pursuit of more suitable drugs intended for possible biological applications are a continuously growing topic of research within the scientific community. One of these suitable qualities includes the need for hydrophilicity and or some appropriate delivery system for the drug to enter into biological systems. A system of analyzing and following these compounds would then, however, be necessary to conduct any kind of mechanistic or interaction studies for he said drug within the biological system. Just to name a few, fluorescence and X-ray computed tomography (CT) methods allow for imaging of biological systems but require the need of compounds …

BACKGROUND: Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is the most common non-Hodgkin lymphoma in children worldwide and the most common paediatric malignancy in sub-Saharan Africa. The endemic (eBL) and sporadic (sBL) variants have distinct epidemiologic and virologic characteristics. Although gene expression studies have defined the transcriptional profiles of both, their proteomic signatures have not been studied. METHODS: We compared the proteomic expression profiles using differential mass spectrometry-based isotope tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) analysis of a cell line representing Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)+ eBL, EBV+ and EBV- sBL, and EBV+/- normal B cells from healthy donors. RESULTS: In total, there were 144 …

Variable Selection With False Discovery Control, Kevin He, Yanming Li, Ji Zhu, Hongliang Liu, Jeffrey E. Lee, Christopher I. Amos, Terry Hyslop, Jiashun Jin, Qinyi Wei, Yi Li

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Technological advances that allow routine identification of high-dimensional risk factors have led to high demand for statistical techniques that enable full utilization of these rich sources of information for genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Variable selection for censored outcome data as well as control of false discoveries (i.e. inclusion of irrelevant variables) in the presence of high-dimensional predictors present serious challenges. In the context of survival analysis with high-dimensional covariates, this paper develops a computationally feasible method for building general risk prediction models, while controlling false discoveries. We have proposed a high-dimensional variable selection method by incorporating stability selection to control …

The Impact Of Principal Leadership Behaviors On Indiana Teacher Stress Levels, Rex M. Ryker Jan 2015

The Impact Of Principal Leadership Behaviors On Indiana Teacher Stress Levels, Rex M. Ryker

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teachers continue to report high levels of stress (Kyriacou, 2011; Metropolitan Life Insurance & Harris Interactive, 2013; Richards, 2012) and principals serve as potential stressors by providing leadership in an era of accountability. Although effective principal leadership behaviors have been identified to improve student achievement, minimal research exists on the impact of principal leadership behaviors on teacher stress levels. This quantitative study examined the impact of select principal leadership behaviors on 3,004 Indiana K-12 public school teachers' perceived stress levels. Through an electronic survey consisting of a researcher-designed principal leadership composite survey (PLCS) and the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS; …

Pre-Hospital Tranexamic Acid Use For Trauma, Troy Thompson Jan 2015

Pre-Hospital Tranexamic Acid Use For Trauma, Troy Thompson

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Nearly 40% of deaths after trauma can be attributed to blood loss. It is well known that early surgical interventions, combined with other treatment modalities found in the hospital setting, lead to the decreased morbidity and mortality of trauma patients. However, in an outpatient setting, treatments for hemorrhage control are extremely limited.

• The purpose of this literature review was to explore tranexamic acid (TXA) use as an option for hemorrhage control and to determine its effect on morbidity and mortality in both prehospital and outpatient settings. TXA is an FDA approved antifibrinolytic that has proven efficacy for hemorrhage …

Benchmarking As An Assessment Tool For Cataloging, Rebecca L. Mugridge, Nancy Poehlmann Jan 2015

Benchmarking As An Assessment Tool For Cataloging, Rebecca L. Mugridge, Nancy Poehlmann

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The authors conducted a survey on the topic of benchmarking as a tool for assessment in cataloging. While assessment is popular in libraries, little research has been done on benchmarking in cataloging, a gap that this study attempts to fill. The authors developed a survey that gauged the respondents’ use of benchmarking, their goals for benchmarking, and how they applied what they learned to make improvements. The survey was administered on the AUTOCAT electronic distribution list in May 2013. There were 92 completed surveys, with 20 libraries reporting that they had used benchmarking as an assessment tool.

Gender Roles, Homophobia, And The Closet: Experiences Of Queer Women, Nicole M. Richards Jan 2015

Gender Roles, Homophobia, And The Closet: Experiences Of Queer Women, Nicole M. Richards

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The culture in which a woman is a part of sets expectations based on their gender. This paper explores how the relationship between prescribed gender roles, internalized homophobia, and coming out of the closet are related. A focus group of seven women who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, and queer was conducted. The findings suggest that gender roles do limit the way women view themselves, that religion is the largest contributor to internalized homophobia, and that gender expression changes throughout the coming out process as these queer women developed a stronger sense of their identity. Future research should include …

Accelerated loss of sea ice in the Arctic is opening routes connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans for longer periods each year. These changes may increase the ease and frequency with which marine birds and mammals move between the Pacific and Atlantic ocean basins. Indeed, recent observations of birds and mammals suggest these movements have intensified in recent decades. Reconnection of the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean basins will present both challenges to marine ecosystem conservation and an unprecedented opportunity to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of inter-oceanic faunal exchange in real time. To understand these changes and implement effective …

Workup And Treatment Of Acute Peripheral Nerve Injuries: A Review, Scott D. Evans Jan 2015

Workup And Treatment Of Acute Peripheral Nerve Injuries: A Review, Scott D. Evans

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) can be a devastating and life-changing condition, normally caused from traumatic and iatrogenic events. Proper treatment of PNI remains difficult, with less than half of surgical procedures resulting in good or excellent outcomes. Subsequently, physicians should be aware of important principles that can help with management of acute PNI. I reviewed studies on PNI involving anatomy and classification schemes; workup such as electrodiagnostic tests, imaging procedures, and surgical indications; and operative treatment options (including nerve repair and use of nerve grafts and conduits, and nerve, muscle, and tendon transfers). Although treatment of these injuries continues to …
