Effects Of Urbanization On The Occurrence Of Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis: Do Urban Environments Provide Refuge From The Amphibian Chytrid Fungus?, Daniel Saenz, Taylor L. Hall, Matthew Kwiatkowski

Faculty Publications

Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a widespread pathogenic fungus that is known to cause the disease, chytridiomycosis, which can be lethal to many amphibians. We compared occurrence rates on spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer) in urban and forested breeding sites in eastern Texas, USA. All study sites were at approximately the same latitude and altitude, and samples were collected at the same time of year to isolate differences in Bd infection rates between habitat types. We found significant differences (p<0.001) in the occurrence of Bd between habitats; with dramatically lower rates of occurrence at urban sites (19.5 %), compared to forested sites (62.9 …

Morphologic And Taxonomic Analysis Of The Weedy And Cultivated Amaranthus Hybridus Species Complex, Dinesh Adhikary, Donald B. Pratt

Faculty Publications

The hybridus species complex of the genus Amaranthus is a group of weedy and cultivated plants from the New World that are considered difficult to identify. Classification schemes have varied between a single species approach, Amaranthus hybridus s.l., and a five species approach that recognizes the widespread weedy A. hybridus s.s., the South American endemic A. quitensis, and the three cultivated taxa (A. hypochondriacus, A. cruentus, and A. caudatus) as distinct species. The goals of this study were to analyze patterns of floral variation within the species complex and to determine distinguishing morphological features of …

Prediction Of Nonradical Au (0)-Containing Precursors In Nanoparticle Growth Processes, Brian M. Barngrover, Timothy J. Manges, Christine M. Aikens

Faculty Publications

This density functional theory (DFT) investigation examines the formation of nonradical Au(0) species from the reduction of Au(I) species. The Au(I) complexes of interest are AuCl2–, AuBr2–, AuI2–, AuClPH3, and AuCl(H)SCH3(−), which are precursors for gold nanoparticle and cluster formation. Reaction of two of the Au(I) species with a hydride results in ejection of two of the ligands and formation of Au2 with two ligands still attached. AuX2– (where X = Cl, Br, or I) reactions eject two halides and form Au2 …

“Of The Ruin And Conquest Of Britain”: The Anglo-Saxon Transformation Of The British Isles, Bryan G. Caswell Jan 2015

“Of The Ruin And Conquest Of Britain”: The Anglo-Saxon Transformation Of The British Isles, Bryan G. Caswell

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The history of Britain after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire has traditionally been perceived as one of invasion and domination at the hands of Germanic peoples most commonly known as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. Though this is the narrative presented by medieval authors, current archaeology suggests that the settlement of Germanic peoples in Britain was peaceful and characterized by cohabitation and acculturation. Further examination and contextualization of the most nearly-contemporary sources reveal discrepancies of chronology and causation which indicate that medieval authors constructed their accounts based not upon an understanding of any Anglo-Saxon invasion but rather upon …

Moving From Capstones Toward Cornerstones: Successes And Challenges In Applying Systems Biology To Identify Mechanisms Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Nathan Kopp, Sharlee Climer, Joseph D. Dougherty

Computer Science Faculty Works

The substantial progress in the last few years toward uncovering genetic causes and risk factors for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has opened new experimental avenues for identifying the underlying neurobiological mechanism of the condition. The bounty of genetic findings has led to a variety of data-driven exploratory analyses aimed at deriving new insights about the shared features of these genes. These approaches leverage data from a variety of different sources such as co-expression in transcriptomic studies, protein-protein interaction networks, gene ontologies (GOs) annotations, or multi-level combinations of all of these. Here, we review the recurrent themes emerging from these analyses …

The Impact Of Minimum Wage On Female Labor Participation Rate In The United States, Nguyen Tran-Nguyen Jan 2015

The Impact Of Minimum Wage On Female Labor Participation Rate In The United States, Nguyen Tran-Nguyen

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This study looks at the relationship between minimum wage and female labor participation rate in the recent years from 1990 to 2014. The study incorporates results from a multivariate regression model as well as other similar studies in the field to see whether or not an increase in minimum wage would benefit female labor participation. It is expecting to see a positive correlation between those two variables, as minimum wage increase would benefit teenage female workers and adult female workers.

A Human Right To Health: Is There One And, If So, What Does It Mean, Carol Castleberry Jan 2015

A Human Right To Health: Is There One And, If So, What Does It Mean, Carol Castleberry

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

The human right to health, maybe more than any other right, uncovers disparities in respect for the human dignity of persons, based on race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographic location, gender or sexual orientation, age, mental health, disability, and other characteristics. This article discusses the place of the human right to health in international law: whether a human right to health exists at all and, if so, what that means. It will illustrate that while the right to health is not universally legally enforceable the realization of the right to health is indeed progressing. The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human …

Rescuing The People Of Tuvalu Towards An I.C.J. Advisory Opinion On The International Legal Obligations To Protect The Environment And Human Rights Of Populations Affected By Climate Change, Mariya Gromilova

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

2014 has been announced by the U.N. General Assembly as the "International Year of Small Island Developing States" with the goals of raising awareness of the Small Island Developing States' (SIDS) unique developmental challenges in relation to a range of environmental problems including climate change, and of fostering the ambition to find solutions for these vulnerable States.' However, the way in which international law is constructed runs counter to the ambitions of the General Assembly. The people of Tuvalu, one of the SIDS, are not to blame for climate change, yet they experience its most severe impacts. Regardless of the …

Differential Protein Expression During Tail Regeneration Of Anolis Carolinensis, Victor Hong, Benjamin Thornton Jan 2015

Differential Protein Expression During Tail Regeneration Of Anolis Carolinensis, Victor Hong, Benjamin Thornton

Research in Biology

Some invertebrate and vertebrate species have the ability to regenerate a lost limb. The lizard species are unique in that they can autotomize their tails and regrow them back. In this study, the proteomic change occurring within the regenerating tail of Anolis carolinensis (Green anole) during 72 h period was examined. We ran 2-dimension electrophoresis to separate the proteins and utilized SameSpots software to find 6 different spots that had altered expression of protein. Within those spots, proteins involved in immunity, energetics, and protein folding and degradation were identified. The proteins that were up-regulated were transferrin, nucleotide-binding domain of the …
