Episodic Disturbance From Boat Anchoring Is A Major Contributor To, But Does Not Alter The Trajectory Of, Long-Term Coral Reef Decline, Graham E. Forrester, Rebecca L. Flynn, Linda M. Forrester, Lianna L. Jarecki

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Isolating the relative effects of episodic disturbances and chronic stressors on long-term community change is challenging. We assessed the impact of an episodic disturbance associated with human visitation (boat anchoring) relative to other drivers of long-term change on coral reefs. A one-time anchoring event at Crab Cove, British Virgin Islands, in 2004 caused rapid losses of coral and reef structural complexity that were equal to the cumulative decline over 23 years observed at an adjacent site. The abundance of small site-attached reef fishes dropped by approximately one quarter after the anchoring event, but this drop was not immediate and only …

Beaver Ponds: Resurgent Nitrogen Sinks For Rural Watersheds In The Northeastern United States, Julia G. Lazar, Kelly Addy, Arthur J. Gold, Peter M. Groffman, Richard A. Mckinney, Dorothy Q. Kellogg

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Beaver-created ponds and dams, on the rise in the northeastern United States, reshape headwater stream networks from extensive, free-flowing reaches to complexes of ponds, wetlands, and connecting streams. We examined seasonal and annual rates of nitrate transformations in three beaver ponds in Rhode Island under enriched nitrate-nitrogen (N) conditions through the use of 15N mass balance techniques on soil core mesocosm incubations. We recovered approximately 93% of the nitrate N from our mesocosm incubations. Of the added nitrate N, 22 to 39% was transformed during the course of the incubation. Denitrification had the highest rates of transformation (97–236 mg …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Objectives: Investigating the potential of myelin repair strategies in multiple sclerosis (MS) requires an understanding of myelin dynamics during lesion evolution. The objective of this study is to longitudinally measure myelin water fraction (MWF), an MRI biomarker of myelin, in new MS lesions and to identify factors that influence their subsequent myelin content. Methods:Twenty-three MS patients were scanned with whole-brain Fast Acquisition with Spiral Trajectory and T2prep (FAST-T2) MWF mapping at baseline and median follow-up of 6 months. Eleven healthy controls (HC) confirmed the reproducibility of FAST-T2 in white matter regions of interests (ROIs) similar to a lesion size. A …

The Origins Of Underperformance In Higher Education In America: Proximal Systems Of Influence, Michael F. Mascolo, Jose Castillo Jan 2015

The Origins Of Underperformance In Higher Education In America: Proximal Systems Of Influence, Michael F. Mascolo, Jose Castillo

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

In this paper, we examine the problem of underachievement in higher education. We begin by seeking to establish that the quality of learning among undergraduates is, as a whole, limited. Undergraduate underachievement cannot be attributed to any single cause. Quite the contrary, we argue that the origins of underperformance in the academy are systemic, coactive and multi-layered. At the proximal level of teaching and learning, we identify four mutually reinforcing processes that contribute to student underachievement: (a) fragmentation of the curriculum, (b) entrant knowledge level and skills gaps; (c) student culture, and (d) pedagogical ineffectiveness. At a more distal level, …

Molecular Approaches For Improving Desiccation Tolerance: Insights From The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana, Steven C. Hand, Michael A. Menze Jan 2015

Molecular Approaches For Improving Desiccation Tolerance: Insights From The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana, Steven C. Hand, Michael A. Menze

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Main conclusion We have evaluated the endogenous expression and molecular properties of selected Group 3 LEA proteins from Artemia franciscana , and the capacity of selected Groups 1 and 3 proteins transfected into various desiccation-sensitive cell lines to improve tolerance to drying. Organisms inhabiting both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems frequently are confronted with the problem of water loss for multiple reasons—exposure to hypersalinity, evaporative water loss, and restriction of intracellular water due to freezing of extracellular fluids. Seasonal desiccation can become severe and lead to the production of tolerant propagules and entry into the state of anhydrobiosis at various stages …

Time For T? Immunoinformatics Addresses The Challenges Of Vaccine Design For Neglected Tropical And Emerging Infectious Diseases, Francis E. Terry, Leonard Moise, Rebecca Martin, Melissa Torres, Nils Pilotte, Steven Williams, Anne S. De Groot

Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications

Vaccines have been invaluable for global health, saving lives and reducing healthcare costs, while also raising the quality of human life. However, newly emerging infectious diseases (EID) and more well-established tropical disease pathogens present complex challenges to vaccine developers; in particular, neglected tropical diseases, which are most prevalent among the world’s poorest, include many pathogens with large sizes, multistage life cycles and a variety of nonhuman vectors. EID such as MERS-CoV and H7N9 are highly pathogenic for humans. For many of these pathogens, while their genomes are available, immune correlates of protection are currently unknown. These complexities make developing vaccines …

Studying Wisdom: Toward A Christian Integrative Perspective, Paul Mclaughlin, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2015

Studying Wisdom: Toward A Christian Integrative Perspective, Paul Mclaughlin, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Wisdom is both a current topic of empirical investigation and a vital part of religious thought. What is the proper relationship between the science of wisdom and religious tradition? We suggest four possible approaches: remove the study of wisdom from its religious moorings, disregard the science of wisdom, look for commonalities in wisdom traditions, and look for particular contributions with religious faiths. Whereas the first two approaches introduce a number of problems for those committed to the integration of faith and psychology, the latter two approaches create a number of intriguing possibilities. Three potential areas of wisdom investigation are offered …

Convergence Analysis Of Jacobi Pseudo-Spectral Method For The Volterra Delay Integro-Differential Equations, Zhang Xiao-Yong, Li Junlin Jan 2015

Convergence Analysis Of Jacobi Pseudo-Spectral Method For The Volterra Delay Integro-Differential Equations, Zhang Xiao-Yong, Li Junlin

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The Jacobi pseudo-spectral method for the Volterra delay integro-differential equations of the second kind is proposed in this paper. We provide a rigorous error analysis for the proposed method, which indicates that the numerical errors (in the L2w a,b -norm and the L¥-norm ) will decay exponentially provided that the source function is sufficiently smooth. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Modeling The Effects Of Myocardial Fiber Architecture And Material Properties On The Left Ventricle Mechanics During Rapid Filling Phase, Abdallah Hassaballah, Mohsen Hassan, Azizi Mardi, Mohd Hamdi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The objective of this research is to study the effects of myofiber volume fraction and fiber orientation on the deformation mechanics of left ventricular (LV) during diastole. The human LV was simulated by three-dimensional finite element (3D-FE) model. The LV geometrical model was represented as a thick-walled ellipsoid truncated at two thirds of major axis. 3D Fiber network, with parallel myofiber bundles to reproduce the globally anisotropic behavior of cardiac tissue, were embedded within the LV model. The LV wall thickness in the reference unstressed state (at hypothetical zero pressure applied inside the LV internal cavity) is divided into n …

Zero Gravity Dynamics Of Two-Phase Flow In A Circular Cylinder, H. Hallaby Ghazi Jan 2015

Zero Gravity Dynamics Of Two-Phase Flow In A Circular Cylinder, H. Hallaby Ghazi

Theses

The current study investigates the dynamics of a two phase flow in a circular cylinder under zero gravity conditions. Zero gravity fluid mechanics is applicable in both spaceflight and terrestrial applications. Plug formation obstruct lung passages and is the cause of asthma and pulmonary disease .In spaceflight applications, the helium bubbles occlude fuel lines of hydrazine arc-jet thrusters on satellites which cause operational problems. The process of plug formation is not fully understood. Previous studies have been limited to static solutions in cylinders. The goal of the current study is to investigate the dynamics of two phase flow under zero …

Cultivating Purposeful Curiosity In A Clinical Setting: Extrapolating From Case To Social Justice, Becky Jacobs

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

Curiosity is an essential component of intellectual development. Not surprisingly, recent data indicate that curious students perform better academically than those who do not exhibit this personality trait. Thus, law professors should harness and nurture this characteristic in our students to improve their learning experiences. This essay considers a three-step pedagogical approach to curiosity as it relates to developing lawyering skills and social justice awareness and to the expansion of access to justice.

Endoglin Potentiates Nitric Oxide Synthesis To Enhance Definitive Hematopoiesis, R Nasrallah, K Knezevic, T Thai, S Thomas, B Gottgens, G Lacaud, V Kouskoff, J Pimanda

Education Papers and Journal Articles

During embryonic development, hematopoietic cells develop by a process of endothelial-to hematopoietic transition of a specialized population of endothelial cells. These hemogenic endothelium (HE) cells in turn develop from a primitive population of FLK1+ mesodermal cells. Endoglin (ENG) is an accessory TGF-β receptor that is enriched on the surface of endothelial and hematopoietic stem cells and is also required for the normal development of hemogenic precursors. However, the functional role of ENG during the transition of FLK1+ Mesoderm to hematopoietic cells is ill defined. To address this we used amurine embryonic stem cell model that has been shown to mirror …

This essay reviews the issues and current literature on how “race,” skin color, and/or phenotype operate as stratifying agents among Latinos in the United States. We review the trends and emerging issues in this area with regard to health, housing and segregation, and socioeconomic status (SES), including education and criminal justice. We do so in the context of the Census Bureau’s release of its 2010 Alternative Questionnaire Experiment (AQE) study. This 5-year study focuses on how to best ask the race question. One of the key findings of the study was that including “Hispanic/Latinos” as a race in the combined questionnaire …

Loss Aversion, Education, And Intergenerational Mobility, Liam C. Malloy Jan 2015

Loss Aversion, Education, And Intergenerational Mobility, Liam C. Malloy

Economics Faculty Publications

Existing empirical work looking at the effects of parental income on IQ, schooling, wealth, race, and personality is only able to explain about half of the observed intergenerational income elasticity. This paper provides a possible behavioral explanation for this elasticity in which heterogeneous agents in sequential generations choose their education levels in the face of loss-averse preferences and weak borrowing constraints. These borrowing-constrained agents make education investment choices in part to avoid consumption losses rather than to maximize lifetime resources. The model generates a positive intergenerational income elasticity even when there are functioning capital markets to finance education investments. I …
