Diagnosis And Management Of Infantile Hemangioma, D. H. Darrow, A. K. Greene, A. J. Mancini, A. J. Nopper, T. M. O

Journal Articles

Infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are the most common tumors of childhood. Unlike other tumors, they have the unique ability to involute after proliferation, often leading primary care providers to assume they will resolve without intervention or consequence. Unfortunately, a subset of IHs rapidly develop complications, resulting in pain, functional impairment, or permanent disfigurement. As a result, the primary clinician has the task of determining which lesions require early consultation with a specialist. Although several recent reviews have been published, this clinical report is the first based on input from individuals representing the many specialties involved in the treatment of IH. Its …

Β2m Antibody Is A Suitable Antibody To Detect Major Histocompatibility Complex Class Ι As Well As Α Chain Antibody In Healthy Tissues And Tissues Infected With Mouse Parvovirus 1, Sana Mahmoud Alhawsawi

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Major histocompatibility complex-Ι (MHC Ι) is an essential protein located on the plasma membrane of every nucleated cell; it contributes to the immune system's ability to defend against bacteria and virus. MHC Ι displays foreign antigens on the cell surface in a manner that encourages CD8+ T cytotoxic cells (CTLs) to respond against these antigens by killing the infected cells. MHC Ι is composed of two chains: a light chain (β-macroglobulin; β2m) and a heavy chain (α chain with 3 domains). The α chain genes have different haplotypes, dependent on the strain of mouse. H-2Kb/ H-2Db is the gene for …

Proxy-Pet Building Blocks As A Design Element For Library Synthesis, Lainey Jo Mallin Jan 2015

Proxy-Pet Building Blocks As A Design Element For Library Synthesis, Lainey Jo Mallin

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In exploring radioligands for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, it is not unusual to synthesize a library of compounds around some targeting scaffold, screen for optimal binding to a relevant diagnostic cellular target, remove some portion of optimized molecule so as to append the requisite reporter group, and then re-evaluate. To this end, the use of "click labeling" in radiochemistry is proving an increasingly attractive means of conjugating a 18F-reporter group, wherein the targeting scaffold bearing a terminal alkyne is allowed to react with a 2-[18F]-fluoroethylazide to forge a linkage as a 1,2,3-triazole substituent. Since the triazole linked prosthetic group …

Parcellation Scheme For A Spatio-Temporal Atlas Of Fetal Brain Lobe Development, Jasmine Kaidbey Jan 2015

Parcellation Scheme For A Spatio-Temporal Atlas Of Fetal Brain Lobe Development, Jasmine Kaidbey

GW Research Days 2015

Introduction

Fetal brain development is a complex and dynamic process. During the third trimester of pregnancy the brain’s surface landscape changes from a smooth layer into a complex canopy with convolutions called gyri. The emergence of quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has allowed for in vivo acquisition of high-resolution images of the fetal brain. Although a timeline for the emergence of important gyri exists; we currently lack an in vivo MRI model—or atlas—of the developing brain. Therefore, our objective was to develop a scheme to parcelate the third trimester in vivo fetal brain into lobes, and apply this scheme onto …

Is There Pandemic Vitamin D Deficiency In The Black Population? A Review Of Evidence, Ria S. Roberts, Fafa Huberta Koudoro, Mark S. Elliott, Zhiyong Han

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Although 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] is the biologically active form of vitamin D, measurement of the total serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level is the gold standard used to define vitamin D status. Currently, it is widely accepted that serum 25 (OH) D levels below 20 ng/ml defines vitamin D deficiency. According to this definition, there appears to be pandemic vitamin D deficiency in the Black population. However, there is no evidence of higher-thannormal rates of common complications and symptomology of true vitamin D deficiency in the Black population. What is going on? We researched the MEDLINE databases to find studies, from …

This study couples in-depth interviews with urban farmers with secondary research to provide a holistic understanding of the urban agriculture movement in Mumbai, Maharastra, India and New York City, New York, USA. Through this resource, it became apparent that the two movements vary drastically in terms of size, scope, resource availability, and movement goals. Despite these differences, the research points to one striking similarity. In both cities, farms and gardens in lower income areas have access to a far smaller body of …

Group Sizes Of Upper Paleolithic Cave Artists, Leslie Vangelder Jan 2015

Group Sizes Of Upper Paleolithic Cave Artists, Leslie Vangelder

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Since the first cave art was discovered two central questions have plagued the research. “Who made the art?” and “Why?” Multiple theories have been raised and explored, however, few lacked hard data to be able to narrow down to the individual level of artist and intention. Recent research focused on the study of finger flutings – lines drawn with hands and fingers in the soft surfaces of caves – has yielded a wealth of forensic data about their creators. While there is still no definitive way to know if the fluters are also the artists of the painted and engraved …

Using Body Condition Index Can Be An Unreliable Indicator Of Fitness: A Case Of Sand Lizard Lacerta Agilis Linnaeus, 1758 (Sauria: Lacertidae), Krzysztof Dudek, Zofia Sajkowska, Monika Gawalek, Anna Ekner-Grzyb

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In ecological and morphological studies, researchers often use body condition index as a measure of an individual's fitness. Our research shows that body condition index may be an unreliable method for this purpose, because changes in lizards' body proportions are not stable during their lifetime. Results obtained from a Polish population of the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) show that the body length increases faster than the body mass, meaning that the correlation between these 2 parameters is not linear. Herpetologists frequently use the body condition index to compare the fitness of lizards of different ages. Our study demonstrates that this …

The Evolution Of Difficult Childbirth And Helpless Hominin Infants, Holly M. Dunsworth, Leah Eccleston

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Because of the implications for behavioral, social, and cultural evolution, reconstructions of the evolutionary history of human parturition are driven by two main questions: First, when did childbirth become difficult? And second, does difficult childbirth have something to do with infant helplessness? Here we review the available evidence and consider answers to these questions. Although the definitive time frame remains unclear, childbirth may not have reached our present state of difficulty until fairly recently (

Capstone Design Expo Posters

Research into stem cells is a growing field of contemporary biology due to their extraordinary potential to develop into myriad cell types for use in regenerative medicine and research applications. Stem cells can vary from adult stem cells, embryonic stem cells, or induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS. Due to the high potential for therapeutic applications, or individualized medicine, there is an increasing demand for stem cell quantities since a critical cell count must be met to demonstrate any therapeutic effect. The problem lies in the amount of time it takes to culture this critical cell count. Isolating fibroblasts in …

Defining Terms: Greywater, Blackwater And Clearwater, Roslynn Brain, Jeremy Lynch, Kelly Kopp

Natural Resources

Why irrigate with treated drinking water when you can meet your irrigation needs through an effective greywater system?

What is greywater*? Greywater includes all wastewater generated in the home, except toilet water (which is considered “blackwater”). In Utah, kitchen sink and dishwasher water are also categorized as “blackwater”. Greywater is an abundant resource in both residential and commercial buildings. According to Brad Lancaster of the Watershed Management Group in Tucson, Arizona, “greywater harvesting is the practice of directing greywater to the primary root zone (top 2 feet or 0.6m of the soil) of perennial plants to help grow beautiful and …

Responses Of Birds To Humans At A Coastal Barrier Beach: Napatree Point, Rhode Island, Thomas W. Mayo, Peter W. C. Paton, Pete August

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Human activity is one of the most important factors affecting disturbance to birds that use coastal barrier beaches in southern New England. The barrier beach at Napatree Point, RI, provides important breeding habitat for several bird species, key stopover habitat for thousands of migrating shorebirds, and is also a popular destination for people. Anecdotal evidence suggested that walkers, joggers, dogs, and watercraft were disrupting birds that foraged and roosted at this site. Our objectives were to characterize the frequency and sources of disturbance to birds and use this information to develop management recommendations to minimize the frequency of human disturbances …
