Dental Pulp Stem Cells: Biology And Use For Periodontal Tissue Engineering, Nahid Y. Ashri, Sumaiah A. Ajlan, Abdullah M. Aldahmash

Saudi Medical Journal

Inflammatory periodontal disease is a major cause of loss of tooth-supporting structures. Novel approaches for regeneration of periodontal apparatus is an area of intensive research. Periodontal tissue engineering implies the use of appropriate regenerative cells, delivered through a suitable scaffold, and guided through signaling molecules. Dental pulp stem cells have been used in an increasing number of studies in dental tissue engineering. Those cells show mesenchymal (stromal) stem cell-like properties including self-renewal and multilineage differentiation potentials, aside from their relative accessibility and pleasant handling properties. The purpose of this article is to review the biological principles of periodontal tissue engineering, …

Conclusion

Educators need to take a more active role in identifying and addressing sleep related issues in students in order to maximize their learning potential and to minimize the numerous negative outcomes of sub-optimal sleep and sleep disorders. Specifically, school personnel can educate parents on the importance of sleep and advocate for later school start times for middle and high school students. In addition, when symptoms persist, educators can make recommendations to parents as a part of the SAT and MDT. See Figure 4 for recommendations for schools.

Towards A Framework For Reproductive Violence”, Caitlyn Kelty-Huber Dec 2015

Towards A Framework For Reproductive Violence”, Caitlyn Kelty-Huber

All Student Scholarship

Since the inception of ecofeminist discourse in the 1970’s, ecofeminists and feminists alike have been divided on their stances toward the ethics of consuming the bodies and by-products of other animals. A powerful cohort of ecofeminists, in part comprised by such scholars as Marti Kheel, Lori Gruen, Greta Gaard, and Carol J. Adams, have done a tremendous amount of work to situate a concern for more-than-human animals within ecofeminism and beyond. Unfortunately, as Cusack highlights, feminism’s failure to both recognize the parallel oppression of “dairy” cows and female farmed animals, and to thoughtfully incorporate that knowledge into feminist praxis has …

Here, we present a community perspective on how to explore, exploit and evolve the diversity in aquatic ecosystem models. These models play an important role in understanding the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, filling in observation gaps and developing effective strategies for water quality management. In this spirit, numerous models have been developed since the 1970s. We set off to explore model diversity by making an inventory among 42 aquatic ecosystem modellers, by categorizing the resulting set of models and by analysing them for diversity. We then focus on how to exploit model diversity by comparing and combining different aspects of …

Examining The Inner Experience Of Individuals With Bipolar Disorder, Johanah Yoosun Kang Dec 2015

Examining The Inner Experience Of Individuals With Bipolar Disorder, Johanah Yoosun Kang

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a serious, chronic mood disorder. The diagnostic criteria for BD provide a description of expected experiences of individuals with BD (e.g., sadness, expansive mood, inflated self-esteem, anhedonia). Despite these criteria, the details of inner experience of individuals with BD are generally unknown. Understanding the inner experience of individuals with BD may provide greater understanding of the lived experience of BD and may provide insights into treating BD. The present study examined the inner experience of six individuals with BD using Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES), a method aimed at apprehending high- fidelity accounts of momentary inner experience. …

A Para-Clerical Approach To The Galileo Affair And To Science Vs. Religion, Maurice A. Finocchiaro Dec 2015

A Para-Clerical Approach To The Galileo Affair And To Science Vs. Religion, Maurice A. Finocchiaro

Philosophy Faculty Research

In 1633, the Inquisition condemned Galileo for defending Copernicus’s hypothesis of the earth’s motion and denying the scientific authority of Scripture. This ended the original controversy, but generated a new one that continues today, for example, about whether the condemnation proves the incompatibility between science and religion. Recently the Galileo affair has been studied by several scholars whom I label “Berkeley para-clericals,” chiefly philosopher Paul Feyerabend and historian John Heilbron. Their approach is distinctive: it views controversial topics involving the relationship between science and religion from a perspective that is secular-minded, but appreciative of religion, and yet conducted in the …

Examination Of Larval Transport, Distribution And Hybridization Patterns Of Two Blue Mussel Species Mytilus Edulis And M. Trossulus In Machias Bay, Maine, Elizabeth A. Prochaska

All Theses And Dissertations

Using an interdisciplinary approach, this study examined the population connectivity of the blue mussel Mytilus trossulus within Machias Bay, Maine, near its inshore southern boundary range. The Eastern Maine Coast Current (EMCC) flows southwestward along the northern Gulf of Maine coastline, just outside of Machias Bay and is a potential pathway for M. trossulus larvae. This study compared results to two historical studies that assayed M. trossulus and M. edulis species distributions to evaluate any temporal changes. Both similarities and differences were found in species composition in Machias Bay. Historical data suggested that the lower Machias Bay was supplied by …

Quantitative Analysis Of The Total Bacteria, Lactobacillus, And Bifidobacterium Colonic Microflora In Rats Fed Conventional, Prebiotic, And Probiotic Soy Diets, Deborah Osterholm Jung Dec 2015

Quantitative Analysis Of The Total Bacteria, Lactobacillus, And Bifidobacterium Colonic Microflora In Rats Fed Conventional, Prebiotic, And Probiotic Soy Diets, Deborah Osterholm Jung

Theses

Research suggests that specific compositions of gut microbiota can directly affect energy harvesting and fat storage, which may indicate a potential role of intestinal bacteria in the regulation of body weight (i.e., obesity). The purpose of the current study was to determine if prebiotic- and probiotic-based diets modify gut microbiota in genetically obese rodents. For this, female Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats were assigned diets containing fructooligosaccharides (FOS), Bifidobacterium (BIF), or Lactobacillus (LAC) for three weeks. qPCR was then used to measure levels of colonic Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and total bacteria. At termination, there was no significant difference in Lactobacillus levels …

The Effect Of Conservation Tillage And Topographic Position On Soil Properties In Central Illinois, Andrew Mellinger Dec 2015

The Effect Of Conservation Tillage And Topographic Position On Soil Properties In Central Illinois, Andrew Mellinger

Theses

Since agriculture began, field management has been at the forefront of expanding food production beyond previous limitations. Agricultural productivity is closely related to the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. Landscape position and field management are among primary factors affecting these soil properties. Delineation of topographic positions of the field surface by shape (i.e., convex, concave, and linear) characterizes areas that may accumulate or lose soil and nutrients either during a discrete event or cumulatively over several growing seasons. Increased soil compaction, degradation of soil structure, and erosion have all been attributed to declining agricultural production. In addition …

Understanding Chytridiomycosis Resistance By Investigating The Cutaneous Defense Mechanisms Of Marsupial Frogs, David Burkart Dec 2015

Understanding Chytridiomycosis Resistance By Investigating The Cutaneous Defense Mechanisms Of Marsupial Frogs, David Burkart

Theses

Anurans are declining worldwide because of the spread of Batachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), the fungus that causes chytridiomycosis. However, some frogs are resistant to this disease, and understanding why may be critical to saving those that are susceptible. In Peru, Gastrotheca excubitor is resistant to chytridiomycosis while Gastrotheca nebulanastes is susceptible. Two anuran skin defenses, symbiotic bacteria and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), have demonstrated the ability to inhibit Bd in vitro when isolated from certain frogs. We tested if these defenses can explain the difference in susceptibility between the two Gastrotheca species. The cutaneous bacteria and AMPs of both species were collected, …

Identifying Protein Kinase Tbk1 As A Novel Inhibitor Of Intestinal Tumorigenesis, Amber L. Mathews Dec 2015

Identifying Protein Kinase Tbk1 As A Novel Inhibitor Of Intestinal Tumorigenesis, Amber L. Mathews

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer diagnosed in women and men, causing almost 600,000 annual deaths worldwide. There is a clear need to understand how CRC forms and progresses in order to improve the strategies of CRC prevention and therapy. A major factor that drives the development of CRC is genetic mutations that lead to activation of oncogenes and inactivation of tumor suppressor genes in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). In addition, the initiation and progression of CRC involve environmental and immunological factors. In particular, chronic inflammatory conditions are known as an important risk factor for CRC. Intestinal …

The Role Of Dna Methylation And Hydroxymethylation In Smooth Muscle Cell Phenotypic Change During Atherogenesis, Jason Williams Dec 2015

The Role Of Dna Methylation And Hydroxymethylation In Smooth Muscle Cell Phenotypic Change During Atherogenesis, Jason Williams

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Atherosclerosis is a chronic arterial disease which impacts systemically the function of organs and tissues by causing inflammation and disruption of blood supply. During atherogenesis, lipid deposits, inflammation, and cells accumulate within the walls of arteries, ultimately leading to a buildup of fatty plaques and occlusion of the arterial lumen. In a multifactorial disease like atherosclerosis there are complex interplays between environmental, genetic and epigenetic risk factors. The epigenetics of atherosclerosis involving DNA methylation has been progressing from single gene to genome wide analyses. Although these epistudies have provided evidence that DNA methylation exists within certain genes during atherogenesis, the …

Prediction Of Laser Ablation In Brain: Sensitivity, Calibration, And Validation, Samuel J. Fahrenholtz Dec 2015

Prediction Of Laser Ablation In Brain: Sensitivity, Calibration, And Validation, Samuel J. Fahrenholtz

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The surgical planning of MR-guided laser induced thermal therapy (MRgLITT) stands to benefit from predictive computational modeling. The dearth of physical model parameter data leads to modeling uncertainty. This work implements a well-accepted framework with three key steps for model-building: model-parameter sensitivity analysis, model calibration, and model validation.

The sensitivity study is via generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) paired with a transient finite element (FEM) model. Uniform probability distribution functions (PDFs) capture the plausible range of values suggested by the literature for five model parameters. The five PDFs are input separately into the FEM model to gain a probabilistic sensitivity response …
