Characterization Of Biomass Burning Emissions From Cooking Fires, Peat, Crop Residue, And Other Fuels With High-Resolution Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, C. Stockwell, P. Veres, J. Williams Jan 2015

Characterization Of Biomass Burning Emissions From Cooking Fires, Peat, Crop Residue, And Other Fuels With High-Resolution Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, C. Stockwell, P. Veres, J. Williams

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We deployed a high-resolution proton-transferreaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS) to measure biomass-burning emissions from peat, crop residue, cooking fires, and many other fire types during the fourth Fire Lab at Missoula Experiment (FLAME-4) laboratory campaign. A combination of gas standard calibrations and composition sensitive, mass-dependent calibration curves was applied to quantify gas-phase non-methane organic compounds (NMOCs) observed in the complex mixture of fire emissions. We used several approaches to assign the best identities to most major “exact masses”, including many high molecular mass species. Using these methods, approximately 80–96% of the total NMOC mass detected by the PTR-TOFMS and Fourier …

For 20-plus years, the Plants, Soils, and Climate Department (PSC) offered a Bachelor degree in Horticulture both on the Logan campus and along the Wasatch Front through USU’s regional campuses. While every attempt was made to ensure regional campus students get the same training and experience as those on the Logan campus, their classes were unavailable at the regional campuses or could not be taught in the same way due to a lack of facilities. Recently the department changed the BS degree in Horticulture to a BS in Plant Science and with that change, the disparities between the regional campus …

En-Listing Life: Red Is The Color Of Threatened Species Lists, Irus Braverman Jan 2015

En-Listing Life: Red Is The Color Of Threatened Species Lists, Irus Braverman

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 11 in Critical Animal Geographies: Politics, Intersections and Heirarchies in a Multispecies World, Kathryn Gillespie & Rosemary-Claire Collard, eds.

The idea that every species should be assessed, ranked, and listed according to its projected risk of extinction is now a commonly accepted practice in conservation. Threatened species lists rank species in a linear progression from the least to the most endangered. This chapter explores the biopolitical nature of such lists. It shows how listing threatened species becomes a way to affirm — and justify — that life which is more and most important to save. The chapter …

Fabrication, Optimization And Characterization Of Synthetic Polymer Based Micro-Nano-Structured Composite Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Aditi Subramanian Jan 2015

Fabrication, Optimization And Characterization Of Synthetic Polymer Based Micro-Nano-Structured Composite Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Aditi Subramanian

Master's Theses

Various scaffold properties have been explored to understand the influence of physical and chemical properties on cellular behavior. Surface morphology is one property, which can be varied by modifying fiber diameter, and has been shown to play a role in cellular attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. The effect of fiber diameter on cellular proliferation and differentiation has offered varying results: some favor nanofibers and others favor microfibers in terms of their ability to encourage proliferation and cellular differentiation. In this study, the surface morphology was altered by modifying the fiber diameter of electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL). This study suggests that though higher …

Bicyclic Naphthenic Acids In Oil Sands Process Water: Identification By Comprehensive Multidimensional Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry., Michael J. Wilde, Charles E. West, Alan G. Scarlett, David Jones, Richard A. Frank, L. Mark Hewitt, Steven J. Rowland

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Although bicyclic acids have been reported to be the major naphthenic acids in oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) and a well-accepted screening assay indicated that some bicyclics were the most acutely toxic acids tested, none have yet been identified. Here we show by comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS), that >100 C8-15 bicyclic acids are typically present in OSPW. Synthesis or purchase allowed us to establish the GC×GC retention times of methyl esters of numerous of these and the mass spectra and published spectra of some additional types, allowed us to identify bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane, bicyclo[3.2.1]octane, bicyclo[4.3.0]nonane, bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane and bicyclo[4.4.0]decane acids in …

Chinese Educational Reforms: Transition Of An International Powerhouse, Jane Powell Jan 2015

Chinese Educational Reforms: Transition Of An International Powerhouse, Jane Powell

International ResearchScape Journal

It has been almost everywhere in the media: The People's Republic of China has a powerhouse of an education system. Only a few years ago were Americans being bombarded with advertisement campaigns, outlining the vast disparity between American and European or Asian testing scores [AR1] [JP2] in math [AR3] [JP4] and science. Now, there is a new discussion. Although the current Chinese system is effective for producing excellent test scores, many project that the rigidity will eventually only hinder China, that a lack of encouragement and space for creativity in Chinese students’[AR5] [JP6] educational careers will result in a …

Pathway To Autism Spectrum Disorders: Finding Patterns Of Common Genetic Variation Underlying The Complex Disorder, Yo Son Park Jan 2015

Pathway To Autism Spectrum Disorders: Finding Patterns Of Common Genetic Variation Underlying The Complex Disorder, Yo Son Park

Open Access Dissertations

The field of genetics has witnessed a tremendous increase in the amount of information in the past decade resulting from genotyping and resequencing technologies. There has been an explosion in the development, application and optimization of statistical and computational methods to analyze these data. In particular, genome-wide scanning of common or rare genetic variants and their associations to a phenotypic trait has been successfully applied in several studies. For complex diseases such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), however, interrogating single locus associations by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has been unable to unambiguously identify disorder causing genes. In this dissertation, an …

Demon Possession In Anglo-Saxon England, Peter Dendle Jan 2015

Demon Possession In Anglo-Saxon England, Peter Dendle

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

Anglo-Saxon England was a society governed by the competing discourses of illness, spirituality, power, and community. The concepts of demon possession and exorcism, introduced by Christian missionaries, provided a potential outlet for expressing the psychological, biological, and sociopolitical dysfunctions of a society that was at the center of multiple conflicting cultural dimensions.

Demon Possession in Anglo-Saxon England is a reexamination of the available sources describing the possessed and a study of the currently recognized medical and psychiatric conditions that may be relevant to and resemble medieval possession.

The Use Of Stem Cells In Burn Wound Healing: A Review, Fadi Ghieh, Rosalyn A. Jurjus, Amir Ibrahim, Alice Gerges Geagea, Hisham Daouk, Bassel El Baba, Sana Cham, Michel Matar, Wadih Zein, Abdo Jurjus

Anatomy and Regenerative Biology Faculty Publications

Burn wound healing involves a series of complex processes which are subject to intensive investigations to improve the outcomes, in particular, the healing time and the quality of the scar. Burn injuries, especially severe ones, are proving to have devastating effects on the affected patients. Stem cells have been recently applied in the field to promote superior healing of the wounds. Not only have stem cells been shown to promote better and faster healing of the burn wounds, but also they have decreased the inflammation levels with less scar progression and fibrosis. This review aims to highlight the beneficial therapeutic …

Benton, Alice Johnstone, David Eccles, Brennan Harmon, Mark T. Hayes, Rod A. Lea, Lyn Griffiths, Eric P. Hoffman, Richard S. Stubbs, Donia Macartney-Coxson

Genomics and Precision Medicine Faculty Publications

Background

Environmental factors can influence obesity by epigenetic mechanisms. Adipose tissue plays a key role in obesity-related metabolic dysfunction, and gastric bypass provides a model to investigate obesity and weight loss in humans.

Results

Here, we investigate DNA methylation in adipose tissue from obese women before and after gastric bypass and significant weight loss. In total, 485,577 CpG sites were profiled in matched, before and after weight loss, subcutaneous and omental adipose tissue. A paired analysis revealed significant differential methylation in omental and subcutaneous adipose tissue. A greater proportion of CpGs are hypermethylated before weight loss and increased methylation is …

The Real Trouble With Risk Assessment, Valery E. Forbes Jan 2015

The Real Trouble With Risk Assessment, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

In their article, “Pesticide regulation amid the influence of industry,” Boone and colleagues (2014) contend that a major weakness of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s pesticide risk assessment is the use of industry-supplied data, which has inherent conflicts of interest. Therefore, studies performed by industry scientists or funded by indus!try sources are considered by the authors to be inherently biased and therefore not to be trusted, the implication being that publications by academic scientists or those funded by nonindustry sources are bias free and, therefore, by definition, suitable for use in risk assessment. However, the funding source is only one …

Opposing Regulation Of Endolysosomal Pathways By Long-Acting Nanoformulated Antiretroviral Therapy And Hiv-1 In Human Macrophages., Mariluz Araínga, Dongwei Guo, Jayme Wiederin, Pawel Ciborowski, Joellyn Mcmillan, Howard Gendelman Jan 2015

Opposing Regulation Of Endolysosomal Pathways By Long-Acting Nanoformulated Antiretroviral Therapy And Hiv-1 In Human Macrophages., Mariluz Araínga, Dongwei Guo, Jayme Wiederin, Pawel Ciborowski, Joellyn Mcmillan, Howard Gendelman

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

BACKGROUND: Long-acting nanoformulated antiretroviral therapy (nanoART) is designed to improve patient regimen adherence, reduce systemic drug toxicities, and facilitate clearance of human immunodeficiency virus type one (HIV-1) infection. While nanoART establishes drug depots within recycling and late monocyte-macrophage endosomes, whether or not this provides a strategic advantage towards viral elimination has not been elucidated.

RESULTS: We applied quantitative SWATH-MS proteomics and cell profiling to nanoparticle atazanavir (nanoATV)-treated and HIV-1 infected human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM). Native ATV and uninfected cells served as controls. Both HIV-1 and nanoATV engaged endolysosomal trafficking for assembly and depot formation, respectively. Notably, the pathways were deregulated …
