Polio - An Endemic Disease In Pakistan: Literature Review, Savera Aziz Ali, Nadir Suhail, Hunaina Hadi, Mohsina Hussain, Marium Manji, Jaweria Bano, Abdul Salam, Sajida Naseer, Sumera Aziz Ali

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Poliomyelitis is a highly contagious and incurable disease, which mainly affects children under five years of age leading to irreversible paralysis and possibly death. For decades, both private and government organizations have been putting efforts through their partnership to eradicate polio completely from the different parts of the globe and as a result of those efforts there are left only three countries which are currently polio endemic. Since Pakistan is one of those three countries which still remain polio endemic along with Afghanistan and Nigeria, it is significant to address this issue and work on the preventive measures to control …

Developmental Mediation Of Genetic Variation In Response To The Fast Track Prevention Program, Dustin Albert, Daniel W. Belsky,, D. Max Crowley, John E. Bates, Gregory S. Pettit, Jennifer E. Lansford, Danielle Dick, Kenneth A. Dodge

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

We conducted a developmental analysis of genetic moderation of the effect of the Fast Track intervention on adult externalizing psychopathology. The Fast Track intervention enrolled 891 children at high risk to develop externalizing behavior problems when they were in kindergarten. Half of the enrolled children were randomly assigned to receive 10 years of treatment, with a range of services and resources provided to the children and their families, and the other half to usual care (controls). We previously showed that the effect of the Fast Track intervention on participants' risk of externalizing psychopathology at age 25 years was moderated by …

An Interagency Approach to Aspen Management - Soda Hills Case Study

Shelli Mavor

Channing Swan

Aspen are a transitional species in a large part of our Rocky Mountain conifer ecosystems. While we observe their transition stages across various landscapes, we enjoy the immense diversity they provide. We describe how interagency coordination assisted in aspen retention, promoted resilience, and continues to delay succession.

Regional Disparities In Neurocritical Care Outcomes, Kali Graham Feb 2015

Regional Disparities In Neurocritical Care Outcomes, Kali Graham

CwiC-PH

BACKGROUND

  • Determinants of Neurocritical Care Outcomes: Social as opposed to biological disparities can frequently dictate health outcomes for neurocritically ill patients. Survival rates are determined both by a patient’s access to a NCU (Neurocritical Care Unit) as well as the level of inpatient care he or she receive once admitted to a NCU.
  • Regional Inequality in Access to Care1:
  • Only 12.8% of Americans have access to a NCU within 45 min by ground transportation and 36.8% have access to a NCU within 45 minutes by air transportation.
  • Racial Disparities in NCU Admissions and Outcomes2:
  • Non …

Heart Failure In Hispanic Americans: Improving Cultural Awareness, Kenneth D. Melton, Karen J. Fell, Karen S. Yehle, Rosanne R. Griggs

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Hispanic Americans are the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in the United States. Hispanic Americans have high rates of heart failure (HF) risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, obstructive sleep disorders, and dyslipidemia. Certain unique HF risk factors prominent among Hispanic Americans are uncommon in the general population, such as younger onset of valvular disease and Chagas disease. Advanced practice nurses providing care to Hispanic Americans have an ethical obligation to provide culturally competent care and assist these patients in overcoming barriers to health care so that they can effectively manage their HF.

Characterization Of Sequential Collagen-Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Diacrylate Interpenetrating Networks And Initial Assessment Of Their Potential For Vascular Tissue Engineering, Dany J. Munoz Pinto, Andrea C. Jimenez-Vergara, T. P. Gharat, M. S. Hahn Feb 2015

Characterization Of Sequential Collagen-Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Diacrylate Interpenetrating Networks And Initial Assessment Of Their Potential For Vascular Tissue Engineering, Dany J. Munoz Pinto, Andrea C. Jimenez-Vergara, T. P. Gharat, M. S. Hahn

Engineering Faculty Research

Collagen hydrogels have been widely investigated as scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering due in part to the capacity of collagen to promote robust cell adhesion and elongation. However, collagen hydrogels display relatively low stiffness and strength, are thrombogenic, and are highly susceptible to cell-mediated contraction. In the current work, we develop and characterize a sequentially-formed interpenetrating network (IPN) that retains the benefits of collagen, but which displays enhanced mechanical stiffness and strength, improved thromboresistance, high physical stability and resistance to contraction. In this strategy, we first form a collagen hydrogel, infuse this hydrogel with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), and subsequently …

Loss Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (Vegfa) Isoforms In Granulosa Cells Using Pdmrt-1-Cre Or Amhr2-Cre Reduces Fertility By Arresting Follicular Development And By Reducing Litter Size In Female Mice, Kevin M. Sargent, Ningxia Lu, Debra T. Clopton, William E. Pohlmeier, Vanessa Brauer, Napoleone Ferrara, David W. Silversides, Andrea S. Cupp

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Because VEGFA has been implicated in follicle development, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of granulosa- and germ cell-specific VEGFA loss on ovarian morphogenesis, function, and female fertility. pDmrt1-Cre mice were mated to floxed VEGFA mice to develop granulosa-/germ cell-specific knockouts (pDmrt1-Cre;Vegfa-/-). The time from mating to first parturition was increased when pDmrt1-Cre;Vegfa-/- females were mated to control males (P = 0.0008) and tended to be longer for heterozygous females (P < 0.07). Litter size was reduced for pDmrt1-Cre;Vegfa-/- females (P < 0.007). The time between the first and second parturitions was also increased for heterozygous females (P < 0.04) and tended to be increased for pDmrt1-Cre;Vegfa-/- females (P < 0.07). pDmrt1-Cre;Vegfa-/- females had smaller ovaries (P …

From Archive To Evidence: Historians And Natural Resource Litigation, Jennifer A. Stevens

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Within the field of natural resource law are several specific areas that are well suited for the historian’s skillset and knowledge. The deployment of the historian’s tool box when conducting research in the legal world, however, can result in deliverables which vary significantly from those found in the academy, as they range widely in both size and scope and do not always use the full range of a historian’s skills. New technological platforms provide consulting historians with creative opportunities to disseminate valuable information and sources and enhance important scholarly debates.

Piercing The Veil: The Limits Of Brain Death As A Legal Fiction, Seema K. Shah Feb 2015

Piercing The Veil: The Limits Of Brain Death As A Legal Fiction, Seema K. Shah

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Brain death is different from the traditional, biological conception of death. Although there is no possibility of a meaningful recovery, considerable scientific evidence shows that neurological and other functions persist in patients accurately diagnosed as brain dead. Elsewhere with others, I have argued that brain death should be understood as an unacknowledged status legal fiction. A legal fiction arises when the law treats something as true, though it is known to be false or not known to be true, for a particular legal purpose (like the fiction that corporations are persons). Moving towards greater transparency, it is legally and ethically …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Today, the price of glycerol has dramatically dropped due to its oversupply from biodiesel production as well as oleochemical industry. Thus, it is essential to develop processes to transform bioglycerol into commercially valued products which is important to ensure sustainability in the biodiesel and oleochemical industries. One possibility is to transform it in propanediols, which have numerous applications such as food additives, raw material in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In this paper, methods of conversion of glycerol into 1,3-propanediol are reviewed and discussed in detail. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Development Of Novel Passive Check Valves For The Microfluidic Cd Platfor, W. Al-Faqheri, Fatimah Ibrahim, T.H.G. Thio, M.M. Aeinehvand, Hamzah Arof, M. Madou

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Microfluidic CD platforms are utilized to perform different biological processes and chemical analyses. In general, a microfluidic CD implements the centrifugal force that is created by the spinning of the platform to pump liquid through the microfluidic network of chambers and channels. Over the last few decades, a wide range of active and passive valving methods were proposed and tested on various microfluidic platforms. Most of the presented valves are too complex to design and involve lengthy fabrication processes. In this paper, easy to fabricate air and liquid check valves for centrifugal microfluidic platforms are presented: a Terminal Check Valve …

Exclusive Rights To Saving The Planet: The Patenting Of Geoengineering Inventions, Anthony E. Chavez Feb 2015

Exclusive Rights To Saving The Planet: The Patenting Of Geoengineering Inventions, Anthony E. Chavez

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

We will not be able to curtail greenhouse-gas emissions quickly enough to avoid significant climate change. Thus, we should anticipate that society will consider implementing climate engineering, either to avert a climate catastrophe or to reduce atmospheric carbon. Although geoengineering research is still in its infancy, in recent years the number of geoengineering patents and patent applications has increased dramatically. Because of the importance of these technologies to society’s future, the United States needs to ensure that these patents do not deter innovation or prevent these technologies from being available for implementation. Specifically, the United States should develop unique procedures …

On Voxel-By-Voxel Accumulated Dose For Prostate Radiation Therapy Using Deformable Image Registration., Jialu Yu, Nicholas Hardcastle, Kyoungkeun Jeong, Edward T. Bender, Mark A. Ritter, Wolfgang A. Tomé

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Since delivered dose is rarely the same with planned, we calculated the delivered total dose to ten prostate radiotherapy patients treated with rectal balloons using deformable dose accumulation (DDA) and compared it with the planned dose. The patients were treated with TomoTherapy using two rectal balloon designs: five patients had the Radiadyne balloon (balloon A), and five patients had the EZ-EM balloon (balloon B). Prostate and rectal wall contours were outlined on each pre-treatment MVCT for all patients. Delivered fractional doses were calculated using the MVCT taken immediately prior to delivery. Dose grids were accumulated to the last MVCT using …

Sex And Hibernaculum Temperature Predict Survivorship In White-Nose Syndrome Affected Little Brown Myotis (Myotis Lucifugus), Laura E. Grieneisen, Sarah A. Brownlee-Bouboulis, Joseph S. Johnson, Deeann M. Reeder

KIP Articles

White-nose syndrome (WNS), an emerging infectious disease caused by the novel fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans , has devastated North American bat populations since its discovery in 2006. The little brown myotis, Myotis lucifugus , has been especially affected. The goal of this 2-year captive study was to determine the impact of hibernacula temperature and sex on WNS survivorship in little brown myotis that displayed visible fungal infection when collected from affected hibernacula. In study 1, we found that WNS-affected male bats had increased survival over females and that bats housed at a colder temperature survived longer than those housed at warmer …

The Proteomic Response Of The Carcinus Maenas Y-Organ Over The Course Of The Molt Cycle, Mark S. Hamer

Master's Theses

Molting in arthropods is a complex process governed by regulatory mechanisms that have evolved and adapted over millennia to allow these animals to grow, despite being confined by a hardened exoskeleton. We isolated the molt-regulating Y-organs (YO) from the common shore crab Carcinus maenas at molt stages B, C1-3, C4, and D0 to assess how changes in protein abundances might underline the unique physiology of each of these stages. We found that changes in protein abundance were most notable in the postmolt stages (B and C1-3), where an increase in energy metabolism and …

Garlet, Alexandre R. Vieira, Renato Menezes Silva

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Introduction

It has been proposed that individual genetic predisposition may contribute to persistent apical periodontitis. Cytokines are associated with levels of inflammation and are involved in caries, pulpal, and periapical tissue destruction. We hypothesized that polymorphisms in cytokine genes may contribute to an individual’s increased susceptibility to apical tissue destruction in response to deep carious lesions.

Methods

Subjects with deep carious lesions, with or without periapical lesions (≥ 3 mm) were recruited at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Texas at Houston. Genomic DNA samples of 316 patients were sorted into 2 groups: 136 cases with deep carious …

Proline Metabolism Increases Katg Expression And Oxidative Stress Resistance In Escherichia Coli, Lu Zhang, James R. Alfano, Donald F. Becker

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The oxidation of L-proline to glutamate in Gram-negative bacteria is catalyzed by the proline utilization A (PutA) flavoenzyme, which contains proline dehydrogenase (PRODH) and _1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C) dehydrogenase domains in a single polypeptide. Previous studies have suggested that aside from providing energy, proline metabolism influences oxidative stress resistance in different organisms. To explore this potential role and the mechanism, we characterized the oxidative stress resistance of wild-type and putA mutant strains of Escherichia coli. Initial stress assays revealed that the putA mutant strain was significantly more sensitive to oxidative stress than the parental wild-type strain. Expression of PutA in the …
