The Role Of Sox9 In Heart Valve Maintenance And Disease, Danielle Huk Feb 2015

The Role Of Sox9 In Heart Valve Maintenance And Disease, Danielle Huk

Open Access Dissertations

Heart valve disease results in over 23,000 deaths annually in the United States, with calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) being the most prevalent (Go et al., 2014). To date, there are no pharmacological therapies to prevent or slow the progression of CAVD, and the only effective treatment involves surgical intervention (Beckmann et al., 2010). Mature aortic valve cusps are composed of a stratified trilaminar extracellular matrix (ECM) that provides the necessary biomechanical properties for function throughout life. It has been previously shown that several ECM proteins within these layers share molecular similarities with cartilage including the expression of type II …

The Anchor, Volume 128.17: February 25, 2015, Hope College

The Anchor: 2015

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Three Dimensional Microfluidic Cell Arrays For Ex Vivo Drug Screening With Mimicked Vascular Flow, Zeynep Dereli-Korkut, H. Dogus Akaydin, A. H. Rezwanuddin Ahmed, Xuejun Jiang, Sihong Wang

Publications and Research

Currently, there are no reliable ex vivo models that predict anticancer drug responses in human tumors accurately. A comprehensive method of mimicking a 3D microenvironment to study effects of anticancer drugs on specific cancer types is essential. Here, we report the development of a three-dimensional microfluidic cell array (3D μFCA), which reconstructs a 3D tumor microenvironment with cancer cells and microvascular endothelial cells. To mimic the in vivo spatial relationship between microvessels and nonendothelial cells embedded in extracellular matrix, three polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers were built into this array. The multilayer property of the device enabled the imitation of the drug …

Pharmacologically Distinct Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Drive Efferent-Mediated Excitation In Calyx-Bearing Vestibular Afferents, J. Chris Holt, Kevin Kewin, Paivi M. Jordan, Peter Cameron, Marcin Klapczynski, J. Michael Mcintosh, Peter A. Crooks, Linda P. Dwoskin, Anna Lysakowski

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Electrical stimulation of vestibular efferent neurons rapidly excites the resting discharge of calyx/dimorphic (CD) afferents. In turtle, this excitation arises when acetylcholine (ACh), released from efferent terminals, directly depolarizes calyceal endings by activating nicotinic ACh receptors (nAChRs). Although molecular biological data from the peripheral vestibular system implicate most of the known nAChR subunits, specific information about those contributing to efferent-mediated excitation of CD afferents is lacking. We sought to identify the nAChR subunits that underlie the rapid excitation of CD afferents and whether they differ from α9α10 nAChRs on type II hair cells that drive efferent-mediated inhibition in adjacent bouton …

Marriage In San Agustín De La Florida, 1784-1803 : Practical Application Of The Real Pragmática De Casamientos, Karen Packard Rhodes Feb 2015

Marriage In San Agustín De La Florida, 1784-1803 : Practical Application Of The Real Pragmática De Casamientos, Karen Packard Rhodes

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

In 1776, King Charles III of Spain issued his Pragmatic Sanction on marriage, extending its provisions to Spanish America in 1778. Young persons were to ask parental permission to marry, and faced punishments if they did not. Any parental objections had to be “just and rational,” and an applicant had recourse to the courts if a parent’s objections were not reasonable. In the colony of St. Augustine, Florida, parental dissent did not meet with a sympathetic hearing. This thesis examines how the Pragmatic Sanction, with subsequent decrees and orders, was observed or ignored in St. Augustine. Marriage, as a life …

Four Eras Of The Twentieth Century Family: The Female Role Within The Family And The Female Role Within Higher Education, Rachel Smith Feb 2015

Four Eras Of The Twentieth Century Family: The Female Role Within The Family And The Female Role Within Higher Education, Rachel Smith

Research Papers

This research paper addresses the fluid nature of the American family structure and how that structure changes over time. Sometimes the family structure progresses forward and makes positive gains in equality between husband and wife and in some instances regresses back. Many facets of American life have influences on the structure of the family. Government control and governmental freedom, no education and higher education, economic prosperity and economic downturn, the United States and those who live within it are always in motion.

Throughout the twentieth century, the changing family structures, caused by changes within American society, fit into four distinct …

Metabolome Searcher: A High Throughput Tool For Metabolite Identification And Metabolic Pathway Mapping Directly From Mass Spectrometry And Using Genome Restriction, A. Ranjitha Dhanasekaran, Jon L. Pearson, Balasubramanian Ganesan, Bart C. Weimer

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Mass spectrometric analysis of microbial metabolism provides a long list of possible compounds. Restricting the identification of the possible compounds to those produced by the specific organism would benefit the identification process. Currently, identification of mass spectrometry (MS) data is commonly done using empirically derived compound databases. Unfortunately, most databases contain relatively few compounds, leaving long lists of unidentified molecules. Incorporating genome-encoded metabolism enables MS output identification that may not be included in databases. Using an organism’s genome as a database restricts metabolite identification to only those compounds that the organism can produce.

Stress And Coping In High School Students In Accelerated Academic Curricula: Developmental Trends And Relationships With Student Success, Brittany V. Hearon Feb 2015

Stress And Coping In High School Students In Accelerated Academic Curricula: Developmental Trends And Relationships With Student Success, Brittany V. Hearon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

High school students in accelerated academic curricula including Advanced Placement (AP) courses and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs are faced with unique challenges associated with their rigorous academic demands, in addition to normative adolescent stressors. Because of the increasing popularity of AP and IB among high-achieving youth and benefits realized by students who successfully manage such curricula, there remains a need to better understand the experiences of stress and coping among this population. The current study used longitudinal and cross-sectional comparisons to (a) investigate the degree to which students in accelerated curricula experience environmental stressors and employ coping strategies to manage …

Morphological And Moisture Availability Controls Of The Leaf Area-To-Sapwood Area Ratio: Analysis Of Measurements On Australian Trees, Henrique Furstenau Togashi, Iain Colin Prentice, Bradley John Evans, David Ian Forrester, Paul Drake, Paul Feikema, Kim Brooksbank, Derek Eamus, Daniel Taylor

Natural Resources Research Articles

  1. The leaf area-to-sapwood area ratio (LA:SA) is a key plant trait that links photosynthesis to transpiration. The pipe model theory states that the sapwood cross-sectional area of a stem or branch at any point should scale isometrically with the area of leaves distal to that point. Optimization theory further suggests that LA:SA should decrease toward drier climates. Although acclimation of LA:SA to climate has been reported within species, much less is known about the scaling of this trait with climate among species.
  2. We compiled LA:SA measurements from 184 species of Australian evergreen angiosperm trees. The pipe model was …

Fluctuating Asymmetry In Menidia Beryllina Before And After The 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Savannah A. Michaelsen, Jacob F. Schaefer, Mark S. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Assessing the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill with a dependable baseline comparison can provide reliable insight into environmental stressors on organisms that were potentially affected by the spill. Fluctuating asymmetry (small, non-random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry) is an informative metric sensitive to contaminants that can be used to assess environmental stress levels. For this study, the well-studied and common Gulf of Mexico estuarine fish, Menidia beryllina, was used with pre and post-oil spill collections. Comparisons of fluctuating asymmetry in three traits (eye diameter, pectoral fin length, and pelvic fin length) were made pre and post-oil spill …

Background: Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Programme for the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans has been criticized for several of its evaluations, and also for the approach used to perform these evaluations. Some critics have claimed that failures of IARC Working Groups to recognize study weaknesses and biases of Working Group members have led to inappropriate classification of a number of agents as carcinogenic to humans. Objectives: The authors of this Commentary are scientists from various disciplines relevant to the identification and hazard evaluation of human carcinogens. We examined criticisms of the IARC classification process …
