Simple Nanobiohybrid For Catalytic Disintegration Of Toxic Water Pollutants, R. Das, Sharifah Bee Abd Hamid, Md. Eaqub Ali

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

World population is increasing day by day, which is calculated of about 80 million/year and total water demand of this huge population is almost 64 billion cubic meters/year [1, 2]. Moreover, industrialization and urbanization consistently polluted our existing water resources by adding notorious toxic pollutants, leading to simultaneously decrease in clean and safe water availability globally. Therefore, it is anticipating that about 1.8 billion people will compel to survive on Earth under water scarcity by 2025 [3].Conventional water purification technologies are time consuming, expensive, and have low affinity and efficiency to newly emerging anthropogenic water pollutants [4J. The paradigm compelled …

Increasing Expression Of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen In Maize Through Breeding, Erin Suzanne Miller Mar 2015

Increasing Expression Of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen In Maize Through Breeding, Erin Suzanne Miller

Master's Theses

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a common virus, with two billion people infected worldwide. It causes approximately 600,000 deaths each year, despite the availability of an effective vaccine since 1982. Maize as a platform for oral vaccination can supply a heat stable vaccine, which does not require syringes or trained personnel to administer. The Hepatitis B Surface antigen was transformed into maize and this seed was used to evaluate expression levels through the breeding process. The transgene was transferred into two elite maize inbreds by backcrossing. Highest expressing ears were selected each generation until approximately 99% commercial parent was …

A Wearable 1.6ghz Non-Invasive Midfield Wave-Based Blood Glucose Sensor, Danielle Nishida Mar 2015

A Wearable 1.6ghz Non-Invasive Midfield Wave-Based Blood Glucose Sensor, Danielle Nishida

Master's Theses

A non-invasive glucose sensor has been sought after by millions of Americans living with diabetes and scientists alike. Current blood glucose sensors approved by the FDA involve an invasive collection technique coupled with costly chemical analysis materials, which continue to bring pain to the growing diabetic population in America. Previous research of non-invasive sensing methods has shown promise, but the difficulty of transmitting power through tissue has degraded the sensing consistency and accuracy needed to reach the consumer market. This has been overcome with recent research in midfield wave power transmission at Stanford University, which has provided an opportunity for …

An Investigation Of Teacher Understanding And Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of The Use Of Learning Targets In The Classroom, Melissa L. Wyers Mar 2015

An Investigation Of Teacher Understanding And Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of The Use Of Learning Targets In The Classroom, Melissa L. Wyers

Dissertations

Conflicting opinions and stances concerning standardization of curriculum in the United States education system are evidenced throughout the nation in the format of debates about the purpose of education and the curriculum. In 1892, nationally recognized American educators met as a Committee of Ten (National Education Association [NEA], 1893) to determine what subject matter should be contained in a formalized system of education, thus establishing the roots of the modern American school system. The results from the meeting were not accepted by all educational entities within the United States and curriculum content continued to be a matter of social and …

Observations Of Hysteresis In The Annual Exchange Circulation Of A Large Microtidal Estuary, Steven D. Meyers, Monica Wilson, Mark E. Luther Mar 2015

Observations Of Hysteresis In The Annual Exchange Circulation Of A Large Microtidal Estuary, Steven D. Meyers, Monica Wilson, Mark E. Luther

Marine Science Faculty Publications

A nonlinear relation between the salinity field and the subtidal exchange circulation in the Tampa Bay estuary is demonstrated using observational data from 1999 to 2011. The data are averaged to form mean monthly climatological values of total freshwater discharge ( ), axial and vertical salinity gradients, and subtidal vertical shear. Well‐known steady state solutions indicate that the exchange circulation is linearly proportional to the horizontal salinity gradient, assuming a constant vertical eddy viscosity ( ). The exchange flow is found to be multivalued with respect to the horizontal salinity gradient, forming a hysteresis loop in parameter space that passes …

Culture And Sustainability: Lessons From The Oyster And Other Metaphors, Vicki Galloway Mar 2015

Culture And Sustainability: Lessons From The Oyster And Other Metaphors, Vicki Galloway

Dimensions

The world is your oyster! proclaims a promotional poster for a study-abroad program, confirming that the oyster-as-world, like all good metaphors, has done some morphing since the days of Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor. Newer bands of shell material have repainted the mollusk metaphor, transforming it from ostracism, opportunism and exploitation to openness, opportunity and exploration, and thus an apt symbol for the intercultural experience. Indeed, Robinson’s (1988) definition of culture as “a system of symbols and meanings” seems to evoke the very image of the oyster’s constant production of shell layers: “past experience influences meaning, which in turn affects …

The Structural Basis For Specificity In Lipoxygenase Catalysis, Marcia E. Newcomer, Alan R. Brash Mar 2015

The Structural Basis For Specificity In Lipoxygenase Catalysis, Marcia E. Newcomer, Alan R. Brash

Faculty Publications

© 2014 The Protein Society. Many intriguing facets of lipoxygenase (LOX) catalysis are open to a detailed structural analysis. Polyunsaturated fatty acids with two to six double bonds are oxygenated precisely on a particular carbon, typically forming a single chiral fatty acid hydroperoxide product. Molecular oxygen is not bound or liganded during catalysis, yet it is directed precisely to one position and one stereo configuration on the reacting fatty acid. The transformations proceed upon exposure of substrate to enzyme in the presence of O2 (RH + O2 → ROOH), so it has proved challenging to capture the precise mode of …

Blood Money: The Commodification Of Menstrual Education In The United States, Meghan Radosevic Mar 2015

Blood Money: The Commodification Of Menstrual Education In The United States, Meghan Radosevic

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

girl’s first menstrual cycle is often considered the first step of the seemingly ritualistic passage into womanhood. However, most girls within the United States who experience menarche fail to view it as a rite of passage, and instead see it as an event they must endure rather than celebrate. Menstruation is a mystifying process for young girls, and the mystification is intensified through the lack of open conversations between pre- and post-menarcheal females. While pedagogical strategies in period education have evolved over time, the one constant within menstrual education is silence. This thesis aims to write into the silence surrounding …

While the impact of aboveground herbivores on plant biomass and fitness has received considerable attention, there has been far less research on the corresponding belowground impacts. The belowground effects of aboveground feeding may be particularly noticeable for invasive and/or outbreaking herbivore species that reach high densities and can cause major damage and sometimes death. The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae, is an invasive pest on the eastern seaboard of the United States that feeds on a native shade-tolerant conifer, the eastern hemlock Tsuga canadensis. Trees rapidly decline and die following infestation, and the invasion of this insect has devastated hemlock …
