The Habits Of Racism: A Phenomenology Of The Lived Experience Of Racism And Racialised Embodiment., Helen Ngo Dec 2015

The Habits Of Racism: A Phenomenology Of The Lived Experience Of Racism And Racialised Embodiment., Helen Ngo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines some of the complex questions raised by the phenomenon and experience of racism. My inquiry is twofold: First, drawing on the resources of Merleau-Ponty, I argue that the conceptual reworking of habit as bodily orientation helps us to identify the more subtle but fundamental workings of racism, to catch its insidious, gestural expressions, as well as its habitual modes of racialised perception. Racism, on this account, is equally expressed through bodily habits, and this in turn raises important ethical questions regarding the responsibility for one's racist habits; as its etymology suggests, habits are not merely passive sedimentations, …

Food Sharing During The Transition To Agriculture At Neolithic Çatalhöyük, Central Anatolia | Food Sharing During The Transition To Agriculture At Neolithic ÇAtalhã¶Yã¼K, Central Anatolia, G. Arzu Demirergi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

All human societies share food. Investigation of food sharing in a society can provide great insights into social relations. Food sharing practices have been anthropologically explored in many cultures, especially in small scale societies such as hunter-gatherers and subsistence agriculturalists. According to the findings of these studies, it can be generalized that hunter gatherers tend to share food relatively widely and often beyond the kin level, while agriculturalists tend to share more restrictedly and often within the household. Although this general statement sheds light on how food is shared in different subsistence systems, it does not provide information on how …

Structure Determination, Enzymatic Characterization, And Inhibitor Discovery Of Select Protein Targets Of Bacterial Pathogens, Brian Edward Mcgillick Dec 2015

Structure Determination, Enzymatic Characterization, And Inhibitor Discovery Of Select Protein Targets Of Bacterial Pathogens, Brian Edward Mcgillick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Our interests are in using structure based drug design to target bacterial agents and toxins that have the potential for intentional release into the environment and therefore pose a severe threat to public health and safety. Specifically, we focus on the pathogenic bacteria Francisella tularensis and Yersinia pestis, as well as the Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs). Our strategy for F. tularensis and Y. pestis was to target the bacterial system for fatty acid biosynthesis (FAS-II). The FAS-II system contains several enzymes whose sequence and structure is highly conserved across a vast array of pathogens. This coupled with the low homology …

Primary Cilia Discriminate Benign Atypical Nevi From Thin Melanoma, Elizabeth R. Snedecor Dec 2015

Primary Cilia Discriminate Benign Atypical Nevi From Thin Melanoma, Elizabeth R. Snedecor

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Melanoma accounts for an overwhelming majority of mortality and morbidity from skin neoplasms. The aggressiveness of melanoma necessitates accurate and efficient diagnosis, which currently relies on analysis of histological samples by dermatopathologists as the gold standard. However, this gold standard allows for many uncertain diagnoses along with increased morbidity and even mortality. Recently, studies of primary cilia have shown their expression to be reduced in cutaneous malignancies, including melanoma. In a previous study, PC expression was markedly decreased in unambiguous lesions of melanoma compared to benign nevi, independent of other cell cycle variables. More recently it was demonstrated that the …

An Investigation Of Epidermolysis Bullosa And An Analysis Of Research And Treatment, Anna Dowling Dec 2015

An Investigation Of Epidermolysis Bullosa And An Analysis Of Research And Treatment, Anna Dowling

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The dysfunction of genes encoding integral proteins of the extracellular matrix and the basement membrane zone create foundations for the disease epidermolysis bullosa. Various proteins reside in the basement membrane zone and are responsible for the strength of the epidermal tissue. The cure for this disease is elusive which poses a problem for modern medicine. In this analysis, the mechanisms of epidermolysis bullosa subtypes were investigated and the viability of future treatment protocols was assessed. The promising treatment options include stem cell, gene, fibroblast, and protein therapy. Strategies need to be investigated further in order to develop therapeutic cures which …

Deciding What Counts As Persecution: An Analysis Of Gender And Sexual Orientation Asylum Cases In The United States, Cheryl Llewellyn Dec 2015

Deciding What Counts As Persecution: An Analysis Of Gender And Sexual Orientation Asylum Cases In The United States, Cheryl Llewellyn

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the United States, individuals may apply for asylum if they have a “well-founded†fear of persecution in their country of origin based on one of five enumerated grounds: race, religion, national origin, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the U.S. saw an influx of women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) applicants. While gender and sexual orientation are not specified in the refugee definition, these applicants contended that their persecution could be attributed to their membership in a particular social group. In response to the growing number of …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Through the use of photography and digital media processes, my art practice explores themes relating to identity, the consciousness of self, home, environment and personal relationships. These themes are explored via an observational approach (external), or, via personal experience (internal); each approach highlighting psychological processes, the vulnerability of self and the commonality of human experience and behavior. In my most recent work, I am using a combination of photography and video, site-specific installation and mixed media applications. Areas of research I am interested in and actively utilize in my work include relational and environmental psychology, cognitive aesthetics, visual communication and …

Using Plant Traits To Predict Denitrification In Wetland Ecosystems, Mary Katherine Alldred Dec 2015

Using Plant Traits To Predict Denitrification In Wetland Ecosystems, Mary Katherine Alldred

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Understanding how changes in ecological communities affect ecosystem function, including the provisioning of ecosystem services, is a critical challenge in the field of ecology. I apply a trait-based approach to link the characteristics of plant communities to their effects on denitrification and nitrogen-removal ecosystem services. My work has addressed this challenge at multiple scales using literature syntheses, field surveys, field manipulations, and greenhouse experiments. In a meta-analysis of 419 published measurements of denitrification, I estimated that vegetation on average increases the ability of marshes to remove nitrogen by 55% and that this effect differs among species. My study was the …

Co-Design Of Wireless Power Transfer And Data Links For Next Generation Passive Devices, Jinghui Jian

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Microsystems that harvest ambient power for their operation have been present in RFID technology and implantable medical devices (IMDs) for couple of decades. With the recent applications under the framework of the Internet of Thing (IoT) and with miniaturization of implantable devices interest in these devices has significantly grown. Two of the critical subjects in the passive devices technology are wireless power transfer (WPT) and data link. The focus of this work is on two distinct applications: design of wireless power transfer for IMDs and backscatter-based tag-to-tag (BBTT) communication system. Our goal in the design of WPT to IMDs is …

Smart Sensing: Mixed-Signal Vlsi Implementation Of Gradient Flow Localization And Separation, Shuo Li Dec 2015

Smart Sensing: Mixed-Signal Vlsi Implementation Of Gradient Flow Localization And Separation, Shuo Li

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Acoustic source localization and separation are two crucial components in the acoustic signal processing field, which can be utilized in many applications such as smart hearing aids, tracking and surveillance devices. The small form factor of these applications urge the use of miniature sensor arrays. Nonetheless, the performance of traditional localization and separation techniques deteriorate with small-form-factor sensor arrays and they require higher sampling frequency to compensate for the performance loss, which means higher noise floor and more power consumption. Gradient flow is a technique for localization of an acoustic source using miniature microphone arrays by relating temporal and spatial …

Super-Hydrophobic High Throughput Electrospun Cellulose Acetate (Ca) Nanofibrous Mats As Oil Selective Sorbents, Chao Han

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The threat of oil pollution increases with the expansion of oil exploration and production activities, as well as the industrial growth around the world. Use of sorbents is a common method to deal with the oil spills. In this work, an advanced sorbent technology is described. A series of non-woven Cellulose Acetate (CA) nanofibrous mats with a 3D fibrous structure were synthesized by a novel high-throughput electrospinning technique. The precursor was solutions of CA/ acetic acid-acetone in various concentrations. Among them, 15.0% CA exhibits a superhydrophobic surface property, with a water contact angle of 128.95°. Its oil sorption capacity is …

Multi-Marker Linkage Disequilibrium Mapping Of Quantitative Trait Loci, Soyoun Lee Dec 2015

Multi-Marker Linkage Disequilibrium Mapping Of Quantitative Trait Loci, Soyoun Lee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Background: Genome-wide associations have been studied for years to infer relationships between biological traits and their underlying genetic causes, known as quantitative traits loci (QTL), in a process known as QTL mapping. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which are commonly used genetic markers, are usually in linkage disequilibrium (LD) with each other within a small genetic region. Both single- and double-marker-based LD mapping methods have been developed by taking advantage of LD structure. Method: In this thesis, a more general LD mapping framework with an arbitrary number of markers has been developed in order to improve LD mapping and its detection …

Groundwater Nitrate Contamination Remediation Through Permeable Reactive Barriers On The Forge River, Long Island, New York, Amy Bronwan Pritt Dec 2015

Groundwater Nitrate Contamination Remediation Through Permeable Reactive Barriers On The Forge River, Long Island, New York, Amy Bronwan Pritt

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Forge River on the south shore of Long Island is contaminated by nitrate. The Forge River leads into Moriches Bay. Nitrate contamination in the river leads to algal blooms, hypoxia of the river and eventually fish kills. The area surrounding the Forge River is largely residential and not sewered with the residents relying on septic systems for sewage disposal. Nitrate from even small septic systems has been found in groundwater as far as 100m down gradient. Other investigators have shown the occurrence of submarine groundwater discharge on Wills Creek, a tributary of the Forge River and my study site. …

Marine Acoustics And Habitat Mapping In The Peconic Estuary, Ny, Michael Patrick White Dec 2015

Marine Acoustics And Habitat Mapping In The Peconic Estuary, Ny, Michael Patrick White

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As coastal populations grow, there is an increasing need for better spatial management of the seafloor. Multibeam backscatter data can be a powerful tool for habitat mapping and segmenting large areas of the seabed, based on similar physical characteristics. In order to increase the effectiveness of backscatter data sets, MBES data from the Peconic Estuary, NY, is reprocessed using newly developed software. These mosaics are less noisy compared to prior results. The relationship between grain size and backscatter is found to have a good correlation in the Peconic Estuary and a simple regression is used to predict mean phi size …

Space Acquisition Strategies Of Zostera Marina, Bradley Thomas Furman Dec 2015

Space Acquisition Strategies Of Zostera Marina, Bradley Thomas Furman

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Seagrasses are a diverse group of clonal marine macrophytes. Their decline in recent decades has been an alarming component of estuarine urbanization, with large portions of historical coverage lost or degraded. Understanding patterns of dispersal and recruitment within and among the remaining populations is now critical to predicting the form and pace of recovery. Working in a developing eelgrass (Zostera marina) meadow in Shinnecock Bay, we combined field manipulations, genotypic surveys and correlative analyses to understand how vegetative growth and seedling recruitment contribute to space acquisition. First, we explored clonal foraging behavior and its effect on patch growth using subterranean …

Denitrifying Bioreactors: A Solution To Groundwater Nitrate Pollution At The Forge River?, Christine Jean Gurdon Dec 2015

Denitrifying Bioreactors: A Solution To Groundwater Nitrate Pollution At The Forge River?, Christine Jean Gurdon

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Denitrifying bioreactors are an approach to remediate groundwater contaminated with nitrate. Their popularity as a remediation system has increased due to their unnecessary maintenance, low cost, and longevity. While field trials on their performance have been conducted, few have been completed in a marine coastal environment. In this study, a denitrification wall was designed to be installed and monitored along the shore of a coastal environment, namely, the Forge River, New York. Prior to the design phase, a groundwater plume of elevated nitrate-nitrite concentrations needed to be identified. Groundwater nitrate-nitrite concentrations ranged from 0.01-17.68 mg/L along Riviera Drive, a road …

Structure And Dynamics Of The Gulf Stream's Interannual Migration East Of Cape Hatteras, Alejandra Sanchez Franks Dec 2015

Structure And Dynamics Of The Gulf Stream's Interannual Migration East Of Cape Hatteras, Alejandra Sanchez Franks

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Gulf Stream's (GS) main mode of interannual variability, its latitudinal migration, has been shown to be atmospherically forced by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), taking a 2 year lag into account. Observational and model data were used here to examine the structure of the GS's migration and the dynamics linking it to atmospheric forcing. The structure of the GS's interannual variability was investigated from different measures of GS position and transport at 38°N and 27°N (i.e. the Florida Current). Using a zonally averaged index, the local measurements of GS position at 38°N proved good representations of overall meridional shifting …

Fight Or Flight: Mobility, Political Behavior, And Nativism In The United States, Yamil Velez Dec 2015

Fight Or Flight: Mobility, Political Behavior, And Nativism In The United States, Yamil Velez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In recent decades, communities across the United States have seen increases in hostility toward immigrants. Prevailing theories in political science hold that responses to immigration are, in part, a function of local area demographics. However, assessments of these theories suffer from the critique that local area demographics and immigration preferences may be endogenous due to residential self-selection. Recent efforts sidestep this problem by using clever modeling strategies or experiments. Rather than viewing self-selection as a nuisance, however, this article develops and tests a theory that treats migration and political behavior as strategies residents invoke in the presence of local immigration. …

Development Of A Novel Double Neural Network And Its Applications, Hao Chen Dec 2015

Development Of A Novel Double Neural Network And Its Applications, Hao Chen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Artificial neural network model is a powerful method that has been widely applied in many different areas. It is essentially a nonlinear statistical model, empirically proved with good prediction accuracy, and has been applied in both regression and classification problems. One challenge in applying artificial neural network models is constructing proper structure adaptive to specific problems. This thesis work is to introduce a novel, double-layered feed-forward neural network (DNN) model with special link patterns. Its applications to genome-wide association studies and stock price prediction in high frequency time scale have been explored. Detecting gene-gene interactions in traditional Genome-wide associate studies …

Implications Of Early-Onset Psychiatric Symptoms For Peer Functioning In Middle-Childhood: A Validity And Clinical Significance Approach, Allison Pennock Danzig Dec 2015

Implications Of Early-Onset Psychiatric Symptoms For Peer Functioning In Middle-Childhood: A Validity And Clinical Significance Approach, Allison Pennock Danzig

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Recent findings indicate that preschoolers experience psychiatric symptoms at rates similar to that of older children and adolescents. However, there are limited data examining the impact of early-onset psychiatric symptoms on subsequent peer functioning. To support the validity and clinical significance of early-emerging symptoms, it is necessary to demonstrate that youth with elevated symptom levels experience significant later difficulties across various domains. Most research linking these constructs has examined the impact of externalizing symptoms on peer functioning cross-sectionally, without consideration of internalizing symptoms. The goals of this study were to derive multiple-informant middle-childhood peer factors, examine the longitudinal impact of …

Development Of Novel Nuclear Imaging Systems For Bioscience Applications, Tuoyu Cao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Biological systems are incredibly complex and their scientific study can be facilitated by the assessment of multiple independent parameters from the same location, ideally in way that provides quantitative and time-synchronized data, with high spatial sampling, and throughout a living subject. Our group has advanced this in vivo, quantitative, multimodal imaging approach by developing and combining various nuclear imaging modalities that provide complementary data to better understand the physiology of humans, animal models, and even plants. Multi-modality imaging in clinical and pre-clinical settings has been shown to provide better diagnostic interpretation compared to stand-alone imaging systems. In recent years, combining …

Regulation Of Wingless Transcription In The Drosophila Blastoderm Embryo, Kimberly Bell Dec 2015

Regulation Of Wingless Transcription In The Drosophila Blastoderm Embryo, Kimberly Bell

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Drosophila anterior/posterior segmentation pathway is a robust system for investigating transcription regulation in an in vivo setting. Runt, the founding member of the Runx family of transcription factors, is a master regulator of gene expression during development. Distinct combinations of Runt and other pair-rule factors act at two recently identified cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) DESE and PESE, to generate the initial 14-stripe sloppy paired 1 (slp1) pattern (Swantek & Gergen, 2004; Prazak et al, 2010). Each CRM alone drives a subset of the slp1 pattern, but their combined action recapitulates early expression of slp1 in a manner not expected from …

Biopower: Foucault And Beyond, Vernon W. Cisney, Nicolae Morar Dec 2015

Biopower: Foucault And Beyond, Vernon W. Cisney, Nicolae Morar

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Michel Foucault’s notion of “biopower” has been a highly fertile concept in recent theory, influencing thinkers worldwide across a variety of disciplines and concerns. In The History of Sexuality: An Introduction, Foucault famously employed the term to describe “a power bent on generating forces, making them grow, and ordering them, rather than one dedicated to impeding them, making them submit, or destroying them.” With this volume, Vernon W. Cisney and Nicolae Morar bring together leading contemporary scholars to explore the many theoretical possibilities that the concept of biopower has enabled while at the same time pinpointing their most important …

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose: To assess hemodynamic differences between aneurysms that occlude rapidly and those occluding in delayed fashion after flow diversion in rabbits. Methods: Thirty-six elastase-induced aneurysms in rabbits were treated with flow diverting devices. Aneurysm occlusion was assessed angiographically immediately before they were sacrificed at 1 (n=6), 2 (n=4), 4 (n=8) or 8 weeks (n=18) after treatment. The aneurysms were classified into a fast occlusion group if they were completely or near completely occluded at 4 weeks or earlier and a slow occlusion group if they remained incompletely occluded at 8 weeks. The immediate post-treatment flow conditions in aneurysms of each …

Specialized Replication Operons Control Rhizobial Plasmid Copy Number In Developing Symbiotic Cells, Clarice Lorraine Perry Dec 2015

Specialized Replication Operons Control Rhizobial Plasmid Copy Number In Developing Symbiotic Cells, Clarice Lorraine Perry

Theses and Dissertations

The rhizobium – legume symbiosis is a complex process that involves genetic cooperation from both bacteria and plants. Previously, our lab described naturally occurring accessory plasmids in rhizobia that inhibit this cooperation. A transposon mutagenesis was performed on the plasmids to detect the genetic factor that blocked nitrogen fixation. Several of the plasmids were found to possess a replication operon that when disrupted by transposon insertion, restored symbiotic function. This study describes an in-depth investigation into one of those plasmids, pHRC377, and into its replication operon. The operon, which we have called repA2C2, comes from the repABC family of …

A Review Of 'Body Farm' Research Facilities Across America With A Focus On Policy And The Impacts When Dealing With Decompositional Changes In Human Remains, Brittany M. Wolff Dec 2015

A Review Of 'Body Farm' Research Facilities Across America With A Focus On Policy And The Impacts When Dealing With Decompositional Changes In Human Remains, Brittany M. Wolff

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

In the current research study, the use of content analysis and secondary data analysis provided the exploratory research on the “body farm” research facilities across the United States. Open-ended survey questions were also utilized and sent to the six research facilities across the country. The use of open-ended survey questions in combination with a small sample size, resulted in only one institution participating in the survey and one facility actively declining to participate. To resolve this limitation, the use of secondary data and content analysis from facility publications and websites were utilized to complete some of the gaps resulting from …

Green Criminological Concerns & Philosophical Beliefs, Alexander Allen Anderson Dec 2015

Green Criminological Concerns & Philosophical Beliefs, Alexander Allen Anderson

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The purpose of this research project was to test the philosophical argument that people who maintained a dualistic mindset or sustained a belief in the existence of the soul would be less concerned with environmental crime. A survey was collected from a sample of 332 individuals at the University of Texas at Arlington in Arlington, Texas. The survey asked individuals to select on a likert scale how concerned they were with environmental harm. Preceding these, individuals were asked to answer either yes, no, or I don’t know on questions concerning their philosophical beliefs, looking for indicators of dualistic thinking and …

The investigation and development of transition metal complexes as cancer chemotherapeutics has gained a lot of interest in the past few decades and has become a promising area of research. Metal complexes of platinum and ruthenium in particular that have demonstrated success as anticancer drugs or are under exploration currently for clinical use are highlighted in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 describes studies undertaken to understand the neurotoxicity of ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes (RPCs), including toxicity in mice and inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as previous work by Dwyer demonstrated that RPCs could be acutely toxic in mice, presumably due to …

Synthesis Of Modified Ribose Spin-Label, Ke-Wei Chang Dec 2015

Synthesis Of Modified Ribose Spin-Label, Ke-Wei Chang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

Transfer ribonucleic acids (tRNAs) from all organisms contain modified nucleosides, which are derived from four different nucleosides. Research has indicated that tRNA modifications affect translation and various metabolic pathways. Among these modifications, some of them need more than one enzyme to produce specific nucleosides. Researchers are interested in investigating the fundamental mechanisms and function of post-transcriptional modifying enzymes. A number of these enzymes are metal-dependent, such as MiaB and MiaE. MiaE enzyme (2-methylthio-N6-isopentenyl-adenosine(37)-tRNA monooxygenase) stereospecifically hydroxylates an adeonosine derivative at the 37th position of tRNA, ms2i6A37, to complete the hypermodification of 2-methylthio-N6-(4-hydroxyisopentenyl)-adenosine (ms2io6A37). Several studies showed that the ms2io6A37 modification …
