A Stand-Alone Dna Hybridization Detection System, Sinan S. Sayood May 2015

A Stand-Alone Dna Hybridization Detection System, Sinan S. Sayood

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The goal of this project was to design a portable device that can quickly and accurately detect the difference between single and double stranded DNA. This was accomplished by analyzing the capacitive properties of DNA solutions and implementing a charge-based capacitive monitoring system to detect and analyze the solutions. The detection system was designed without reliance on expensive functionalized electrodes, and instead is able to detect the properties of free- oating DNA. This approach greatly reduces the cost of the materials needed to construct the device. It also decouples the main sensor apparatus from the bulk of the electronics, reducing …

A Survey Of Software-Based String Matching Algorithms For Forensic Analysis, Yi-Ching Liao May 2015

A Survey Of Software-Based String Matching Algorithms For Forensic Analysis, Yi-Ching Liao

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Employing a fast string matching algorithm is essential for minimizing the overhead of extracting structured files from a raw disk image. In this paper, we summarize the concept, implementation, and main features of ten software-based string matching algorithms, and evaluate their applicability for forensic analysis. We provide comparisons between the selected software-based string matching algorithms from the perspective of forensic analysis by conducting their performance evaluation for file carving. According to the experimental results, the Shift-Or algorithm (R. Baeza-Yates & Gonnet, 1992) and the Karp-Rabin algorithm (Karp & Rabin, 1987) have the minimized search time for identifying the locations of …

Effects Of Selective Logging And Roads On Instream Fine Sediments And Macroinvertebrate Assemblages In The Clackamas Basin, Oregon, Paula Elizabeth Hood May 2015

Effects Of Selective Logging And Roads On Instream Fine Sediments And Macroinvertebrate Assemblages In The Clackamas Basin, Oregon, Paula Elizabeth Hood

Dissertations and Theses

Logging and associated skid trails, haul routes, and roads can have significant impacts on the magnitude and timing of sediments in streams in forested watersheds. Loss of vegetation, soil compaction, use of heavy logging equipment, and alteration of natural hydrologic patterns within the watershed can increase landslide rates, create erosion, and generate fine sediments. Selective logging, also called thinning, is a logging practice that leaves some trees within sale units unharvested. The ecological impacts of thinning on stream ecosystems are not fully understood and need further study. My hypothesis was that macroinvertebrate assemblages would be different in streams in non-reference …

Modelling Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias Using Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Kyle Denton May 2015

Modelling Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias Using Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Kyle Denton

Doctoral Dissertations

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) comprise a large, heterogeneous group of genetic neurodegenerative disorders. The unifying symptom present among HSP patients is lower limb spasticity, which is caused by the degeneration of cortical spinal motor neuron (CSMN) axons. Research on various HSP subtypes has identified a number of common cellular pathways that are weak points for long projection neurons, particularly CSMNs. The focus of this work has been to generate novel cellular models of several HSP subtypes using human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). Stem cell models were chosen because of their ability to use cells that have the same genetic background …

Genetic Basis For Rheumatic Heart Disease In High Risk Families In Western Samoa, Eleni Tukuafu, John S.K. Kauwe May 2015

Genetic Basis For Rheumatic Heart Disease In High Risk Families In Western Samoa, Eleni Tukuafu, John S.K. Kauwe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the most common form of acquired cardiovascular disease among children worldwide and results in 233,000 deaths annually. Although genetic and environmental factors are known to contribute to RHD, not much is known about genes that increase susceptibility. RHD results from untreated rheumatic fever (RF). RF develops when a Streptococcus pyogenes infection, such as streptococcal pharyngitis, goes untreated. About 34% of children with an untreated Streptococcus pyogenes infection develop rheumatic fever. Only 1/3 of those children acquire RHD1. This suggests that there is a genetic basis for why some children are prone to the …

A Method Of Introducing Site Specific Mutations Into The Phor Gene Of The E. Coli Chromosome, Cameron Woodward, William Mccleary May 2015

A Method Of Introducing Site Specific Mutations Into The Phor Gene Of The E. Coli Chromosome, Cameron Woodward, William Mccleary

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Phosphate intake by Escherichia coli serves as a good model system to study phosphate intake by other bacteria. The pho phosphate uptake system used by E. coli is well conserved in pathogens like Vibrio cholerae (1). To better understand this important mode of phosphate uptake a study was performed to examine the interactions between the phoR and phoU proteins of this system. PhoU interacts with the pstSCAB complex, which brings phosphate into the cell. After communicating with pstSCAB the phoU protein interacts with phoR to tell it if phosphate is present in the environment or not. PhoR has been shown …

Suggestion, Perception, Reality: A Study Into The Relationship Between Suggestion And The Reality It May Produce, Perception, Reality: A Study Into The Relationship Between Suggestion And The Reality It May Produce., Scott Whippo

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Suggestion is a part of communication that cannot be stripped from or be considered separate from verbal and nonverbal communication. It is through the need to view the communication processes from a complete understanding that this study investigated the possible influence that suggestion may have on an individual’s perception of reality. The existing literature was reviewed with various results from different researchers, however, much of the literature supported previous research done by Spanos et al. (1984) and Bartels et al. (2006). Their research showed some indications that suggestion, and possibly priming may have an influence on an individual’s perception. Using …

Neurology Faculty Publications

Brain iron elevation is implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis, but the impact of iron on disease outcomes has not been previously explored in a longitudinal study. Ferritin is the major iron storage protein of the body; by using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of ferritin as an index, we explored whether brain iron status impacts longitudinal outcomes in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort. We show that baseline CSF ferritin levels were negatively associated with cognitive performance over 7 years in 91 cognitively normal, 144 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 67 AD subjects, and predicted MCI conversion to AD. …

Transport Of Bovine Milk Exosomes In Human Endothelial Cell, Rio Jati Kusuma May 2015

Transport Of Bovine Milk Exosomes In Human Endothelial Cell, Rio Jati Kusuma

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can be synthesized endogenously and cause gene repression. Encapsulation of miRNAs in exosomes confers protection against degradation and a vehicle for shuttling between cells and tissues, and cellular uptake by endocytosis. Exosomes can be found in biological fluids and foods including milk. Evidence suggests that humans absorb cow’s milk exosomes and deliver the microRNA cargo to peripheral tissues, consistent with gene regulation by nucleic acids across species boundaries. There is strong evidence that milk exosomes may cross the mucosa without re-packaging in mice. Here, we tested the hypothesis that human vascular endothelial cells transport milk exosomes by endocytosis, …

The genome sizes of the B- and Q-types of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennnadius) were estimated using flow cytometry (Drosophila melanogaster as the DNA reference standard and propidium iodide (PI) as the fluorochrome) and k-mer analysis. For flow cytometry, the mean nuclear DNA content was 0.686 pg for B-type males, 1.392 pg for B-type females, 0.680 pg for Q-type males, and 1.306 pg for Q-type females. Based on the relationship between DNA content and genome size (1 pg DNA = 980 Mbp), the haploid genome size of B. tabaci ranged from 640 to 682 Mbp. For k-mer analysis, genome …

Local Patterns In Host-Selection By Anemone Symbionts In Bocas Del Toro, Panama, Samantha Mercer May 2015

Local Patterns In Host-Selection By Anemone Symbionts In Bocas Del Toro, Panama, Samantha Mercer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The associations made between many symbiotic cleaner shrimps and their host anemone species are influenced by local ecological factors, resulting in regional variations in symbiont-host preferences. These relationships are crucial parts of aquatic ecosystems, and as we face rapid global environmental change, understanding the local patterns of this host specificity will be essential to maintaining healthy marine environments. However, sea anemones, as well as their symbiotic relationships, from the Caribbean coasts of Panama have been poorly studied and are largely under-represented in the current literature. The purpose of this study is to identify the local host-selection patterns, specifically regarding host-size …

Investigation Of Oxidopyrylium-Alkene [ 5 +2 ] Cycloaddition Conjugate Addition Cascades And Extension To Chiral Auxiliary-Based Variants, Chunyin Marshall Law May 2015

Investigation Of Oxidopyrylium-Alkene [ 5 +2 ] Cycloaddition Conjugate Addition Cascades And Extension To Chiral Auxiliary-Based Variants, Chunyin Marshall Law

Theses and Dissertations

Oxidopyrylium-based [5+2] cycloadditions have been extensively utilized to construct oxabridged seven-membered ring systems that often serve as the core structures in numerous biologically active natural products. By investigating these processes, we hope to reveal the highest potentials of [5+2] cycloaddition as a synthetic tool.

A novel oxidopyrylium-alkene [5+2] cycloaddition conjugate addition cascade (C3) sequence, which allows rapid build-up of molecular complexity with excellent diastereocontrol, was investigated. The scope and limitation of this process were explored as mixed results were shown for various acetoxypyranone-alkene substrates. In addition, oxidopyrylium [5+2] cycloadditions of ï?¢-silyloxy-ï?§-pyrones were investigated which revealed the accelerating role of carbonyl …

Exposure to stray neutrons increases the risk of second cancer development after proton therapy. Previously reported analytical models of this exposure were difficult to configure and had not been investigated below 100 MeV proton energy. The purposes of this study were to test an analytical model of neutron equivalent dose per therapeutic absorbed dose at 75 MeV and to improve the model by reducing the number of configuration parameters and making it continuous in proton energy from 100 to 250 MeV. To develop the analytical model, we used previously published H/D values in water from Monte Carlo simulations of a …

Insole Antenna For On-Body Telemetry, Domenico Gaetano, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann, Matthias John, Colm Brannigan, Louise Keating, Frances Horgan

Articles

A 433 MHz antenna is proposed for integration with the insole of footwear for a body area network. The folded dipole design with an asymmetric groundplane radiates from its edges and considers the close proximity of the human foot and ground surfaces. It functions for different ground conductivity conditions and an on-body communication link with an Inverted F Antenna in the upper body area was evaluated on a static and dynamic human subject. The antenna solution was compliant with Specific Absorption Rate requirements, remains matched and links with upper-body nodes regardless of the body posture and node location.

This paper describes the life (and death) of the interface in the installation Tiny Moments by David Strang. Tiny Moments is a sound and light interactive installation that explores natural phenomena surrounding heat, ice and presence/ proximity. This installation explores the process of natural materials in computer interaction in a way beyond simple hardware devices available to users. What is created is a space filled with ever changing rhythms of light and sound in complete synchronicity that no user feels to have any control of.
