Antibacterial Activity Of Native California Medicinal Plant Extracts Isolated From Rhamnus Californica And Umbellularia Californica., Maria G. Carranza, Mary B. Sevigny, Debashree Banerjee, Lacie Fox-Cubley
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to global public health. Medicinal plants have long been used as remedies for infectious diseases by native cultures around the world and have the potential for providing effective treatments for antibiotic-resistant infections. Rhamnus californica (Rhamnaceae) and Umbellularia californica (Lauraceae) are two indigenous California plant species historically used by Native Americans to treat skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. This study aimed to assess the in vitro antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts of leaves and bark of R. and U. californica against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
METHODS: Methanolic …
Transition After Breast Cancer Treatment: Implementing Survivorship Care Plans, Susan Hope Klein
Transition After Breast Cancer Treatment: Implementing Survivorship Care Plans, Susan Hope Klein
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
The success of cancer treatments have resulted in a rapid growth of survivors, providing the impetus for the oncology community to examine models of care supporting smooth transition from active treatment to survivorship care. While initially a recommendation of the Institute of Medicine, treatment summaries and survivorship care plans are now an accreditation requirement for many organizations. This article describes the implementation of an evidence based practice project designed to meet these standards while improving the knowledge and satisfaction of a population of breast cancer patients at a community-based oncology practice.
Supporting Self-Management In Veterans With Chronic Pain: A Policy Perspective, Erin W. Lind
Supporting Self-Management In Veterans With Chronic Pain: A Policy Perspective, Erin W. Lind
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
The purpose of the project was to do an evidence-based review of the effectiveness of promoting self-care on pain levels and quality of life among veterans with chronic pain at a national level. A review of current chronic pain management policies for veterans in southern California was also conducted. Active self-management initiatives permit more diverse, patient-centered treatment, promote self-management, and are relatively safe and cost-effective. Our results have confirmed that chronic pain is on the forefront of priorities for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) due to an increasing rate of both chronic pain and opioid overdoses.
Greening A Drug-Addicted Economy: Can Puerto Rico Ease Away From The Toxic Pharmaceutical Industry To A Sustainably Diverse Economy?, Natalie Galarza
Greening A Drug-Addicted Economy: Can Puerto Rico Ease Away From The Toxic Pharmaceutical Industry To A Sustainably Diverse Economy?, Natalie Galarza
Student Theses 2015-Present
Puerto Rico is not the most well known place to most Americans. The small island in the Caribbean is neither an independent nation nor a state, bur rather a commonwealth of the U.S. Life filled coral reefs surround the coasts, rainforests and lush vegetation cover the land, and an underground cave system and glowing bioluminescent bay fascinate all those that venture to them. These natural wonders as well as the vibrant culture are the primary aspects most people who are familiar with Puerto Rico think of. However, the main sector of Puerto Rico’s economy has nothing to do with any …

The Effects Of Moderate-Intensity Aerobic Exercise On Cognition And Arousal In Extrovert And Introvert Personality Types, Deborah Riquelme
Open Access Dissertations
The present study examined differences in cognitive function between extrovert and introvert personality groups using a modified flanker task that included easy (congruent) and more difficult (incongruent) trials, at rest and during exercise. Dependent variables included amplitude and latency of the N100 component of event-related potentials, and behavioral measures included accuracy and reaction time. Fifteen extroverts and 14 introverts, ages 18-30 (22 women and 7 men), participated in the study. Although there were no significant differences in cognitive function between personality groups for any measures, cognitive function improved from rest to exercise for the entire sample as indexed by decreased …

Measuring Charge Carrier Mobility In Graphene, Christina A. Harmon
Measuring Charge Carrier Mobility In Graphene, Christina A. Harmon
Senior Theses
This research reports measurements of electron mobility in Graphene Field Effect Transistors (GFET), gated with liquid. Mobility is a quantity describing how easily charge carriers move through a material. GFET biosensors have the greatest sensitivity when the mobility is high; therefore, increasing mobility should improve sensitivity of these and similar devices. An optimal method was established for preparing samples and taking measurements of a liquid-gate device. Sheet conductivity was measured using van der Pauw geometry and carrier density was determined from measurements of the liquid-gate capacitance. It is shown that mobility improves after the graphene surface is cleaned by an …
Social Identity-Based Threats To Human Security: Gender Practice In Sustainable Development And Conflict Transformation, Emma W. Buck
Social Identity-Based Threats To Human Security: Gender Practice In Sustainable Development And Conflict Transformation, Emma W. Buck
Capstone Collection
I seek to advocate for practitioners in conflict transformation and/or sustainable development to build awareness around the peoples who, according to the status afforded them by their identities within a social context, experience threats to their own sense of human security within situations of violent conflict and/or underdevelopment. This capstone does so by examining gender -- that is, the context-specific distinctions between men and women-- as a social context that influences an individual’s feelings of human security. The capstone then expands a practitioner’s means of addressing gender-based threats to human security in situ. I will first define and situate …

Mechanisms Of Axial Polarity Modification During Postembryonic Development Of The Basal Bilaterian Convolutriloba Macropyga, Laura N. Crowther, James M. Sikes Ph.D.
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Acoel flatworms have varied modes of asexual reproduction that involve dramatic postembryonic modification of their anterior-posterior (AP) axis. The acoel species Convolutriloba macropyga reproduces through a reversed polarity budding process in which offspring develop from two posterior budding sites with a complete reversal of the AP axis compared to the parent. Reversed polarity budding is preceded by the development of a zone of tissue with disorganized musculature that is incapable of regeneration, suggesting a transient loss of axis polarity at each budding site. For this reason, these tissues are titled the polarity transition zone (PTZ). While this alteration of existing …

Impact Of Abuse Throughout A Child's Psychological Development, Michael Wurdeman
Counselor Education Capstones
The effects of childhood abuse on development from infancy through adulthood have been studied for many years. Professionals in the field of psychology and counseling have taken a strong interest in how adversity (e.g., abuse) affects developmental progression through Erikson’s psychosocial stages; as often times, this abuse will hinder the development of the child as he or she matures into adulthood. Throughout this paper, the impact of childhood abuse specifically as it pertains to the development of mental health issues and chemical health will be examined.

Glucocorticoids signal through the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and are administered clinically for a variety of situations, including inflammatory disorders, specific cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, and organ/tissue transplantation. However, glucocorticoid therapy is also associated with additional complications, including steroid-induced diabetes. We hypothesized that modification of the steroid backbone is one strategy to enhance the therapeutic potential of GR activation. Toward this goal, two commercially unavailable, thiobenzothiazole-containing derivatives of hydrocortisone (termed MS4 and MS6) were examined using 832/13 rat insulinoma cells as well as rodent and human islets. We found …

3' repair exonuclease 1 (TREX1) is a known DNA exonuclease involved in autoimmune disorders and the antiviral response. In this work, we show that TREX1 is also a RNA exonuclease. Purified TREX1 displays robust exoribonuclease activity that degrades single-stranded, but not double-stranded, RNA. TREX1-D200N, an Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome disease-causing mutant, is defective in degrading RNA. TREX1 activity is strongly inhibited by a stretch of pyrimidine residues as is a bacterial homolog, RNase T. Kinetic measurements indicate that the apparent Km of TREX1 for RNA is higher than that for DNA. Like RNase T, human TREX1 is active in degrading native …

Finally, the …
Life Cycle Assessment Of Reclaimed Water For Potable And Nonpotable Reuse In California, Antonia Estevez-Olea
Life Cycle Assessment Of Reclaimed Water For Potable And Nonpotable Reuse In California, Antonia Estevez-Olea
Master's Projects and Capstones
Extreme drought, water scarcity and population growth is forcing California to seek out new water sources. Reclaimed water is considered one of the best alternatives to alleviate water shortages and help meet the water demand sustainably. However, the environmental impacts of reclaimed water have not been fully studied to ensure that the overall benefits of reclaimed water do indeed outweigh the environmental, social, and economic costs. In this study a life cycle assessment (LCA) for potable (direct and indirect) and nonpotable reuse will be conducted to identify and quantify major environmental, social, and economic problems that are attributed to reclaimed …

Evaluation Of The Feasibility Of Struvite Precipitation From Domestic Wastewater As An Alternative Phosphorus Fertilizer Resource, Amanda R. Bird
Evaluation Of The Feasibility Of Struvite Precipitation From Domestic Wastewater As An Alternative Phosphorus Fertilizer Resource, Amanda R. Bird
Master's Projects and Capstones
Finite phosphate rock ore reserves are estimated to be exhausted in 100 to 150 years. Phosphate rock ore is the single global source material for phosphorus fertilizer production. Once these reserves are gone, agricultural production will be negatively impacted. There are currently no alternative phosphorus resources. However, phosphorus concentrations present in human excrement traveling through domestic wastewater treatment facilities is being disposed of directly to the environment, often resulting in pollution problems. Recovering phosphorus from wastewater with struvite precipitation systems at wastewater treatment plants can alleviate future phosphorus scarcities. Evaluation of phosphorus recovery through struvite precipitation at wastewater treatment plants …

An optimized approach to nonlinear iterative reconstruction of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)–guided near-infrared spectral tomography (NIRST) images was developed using an L-curve-based algorithm for the choice of regularization parameter. This approach was applied to clinical exam data to maximize the reconstructed values differentiating malignant and benign lesions. MRI/NIRST data from 25 patients with abnormal breast readings (BI-RADS category 4-5) were analyzed using this optimal regularization methodology, and the results showed enhanced p values and area under the curve (AUC) for the task of differentiating malignant from benign lesions. Of the four absorption parameters and two scatter parameters, the most significant …

Summary Of The Performance Effects Of Sustained Operations, Valerie Gawron
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Sustained operations missions are performed in diverse environments. These environments include military command and control, process control, medical practice, and security surveillance. Research on the related fatigue effects of sustained operations is reviewed for each of these diverse environments. For military surge operations, both ground and airborne command and control operators show similar decrements in visual performance as a function of sleep loss. Other decrements include increased number of errors in vigilance tasks and reaction time tasks. In process control experiments, longer shifts resulted in more variance in reaction time to grammatical reasoning tasks. Night shift was associated with slower …

Effectiveness Of Wastewater Treatment For Selected Contaminants Using Constructed Wetlands In Mediterranean Climates, Emmy Tsang
Master's Projects and Capstones
Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment (CWWT) are engineered wetland systems created to emulate the processes that occur in natural wetlands. This research focused on looking at the effectiveness of selected contaminant removal based on pilot-scale and full-scale case studies conducted in Mediterranean climate regions around the world for potential application to Mediterranean climate regions in California. The case studies consisted of three basic design types: vertical subsurface flow (VSSF), horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF), and free water surface (FWS) flow systems. All three systems showed high removal rates of total suspended solids (TSS) and organic matter: biological oxygen demand (BOD) and …

Surface And Subsurface Application Of Chemical Dispersants And Associated Ecosystem Impacts, Adam V. Radpour
Master's Projects and Capstones
Chemical dispersants are applied to spilled oil in marine environments when other, less controversial, methods are not adequate for the incident. They are considered to be a response method as opposed to a direct cleanup method, with the intended goals of reducing risk of exposure to sensitive shorelines, reducing environmental injury to surface-dwelling sea birds and marine mammals, and facilitating the biodegradation of spilled oil into the water column.
For this research, both surface and subsurface application of dispersants were evaluated in terms of oil characteristics and volume, and oceanic and atmospheric conditions. More data exists to support the effectiveness …

Genetic Heterogeneity Of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum: The Chinese Signature Profile Of Abcc6 And Enpp1 Mutations., Liang Jin, Qiujie Jiang, Zhengsheng Wu, Changxia Shao, Yong Zhou, Luting Yang, Jouni Uitto, Gang Wang
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by ectopic mineralization, is caused by mutations in the ABCC6 gene. We examined clinically 29 Chinese PXE patients from unrelated families, so far the largest cohort of Asian PXE patients. In a subset of 22 patients, we sequenced ABCC6 and another candidate gene, ENPP1, and conducted pathogenicity analyses for each variant. We identified a total of 17 distinct mutations in ABCC6, 15 of them being, to our knowledge, previously unreported, including 5 frameshift and 10 missense variants. In addition, a missense mutation in combination with a recurrent nonsense mutation in ENPP1 was …

We measured phytoplankton-growth (μ) and herbivorous-protist grazing (g) rates in relation to mixed-layer-depth (MLD) during the March/April 2012 EuroBasin cruise in the subpolar North Atlantic. We performed 15 dilution experiments at two open-ocean (∼ 1300 m) and one shelf (160 m) station. Of the two open-ocean stations one was deeply mixed (476 m), the other stratified (46 m). At the shelf station, MLD reached the bottom. Initial chlorophyll a (Chl a) varied from 0.2–1.9 μg L−1 and increased up to 2.7 μg L−1 at the shelf station. In 80% of experiments, regardless of MLD, growth-rates …
Electrolyte Effects On The Kinetics Of Comproportionation Electron-Transfer Reactions And On Intervalence Charge-Transfer Band Energies Of Binuclear Ruthenium Ammine Complexes, Zhiji Han
Master's Theses
Chapter 1 describes an overview of electron-transfer reactions. The kinetic equations for ET reactions have also been described in detail.
Chapter 2 describes a series of novel kinetic accelerations which deviate strongly from the predictions of the classical Debye-Huckle theory with a range of different added “inert” electrolytes. The greater catalytic effects seen with the heavier halides and other catalytic electrolytes (especially certain dicarboxylates) indicate an important role for hole-transfer superexchange in the ET transition state. The hypothesis of a catalytic ternary association complex, [RuII--X--RuIII] has also been explored by kinetic modeling of the reaction. An increasing ratio of anion-catalyzed …
