Should Australian Courts Give More Witnesses The Right To Skype?, Marilyn Krawitz, Justine Howard Jan 2015

Should Australian Courts Give More Witnesses The Right To Skype?, Marilyn Krawitz, Justine Howard

Law Papers and Journal Articles

Millions of people use Skype, a common form of social media that permits
people to talk to each other over the internet. Courts in Australia have
permitted witnesses in at least a few instances to testify by Skype to date. This
article examines whether Australian courts should permit witnesses to testify
by Skype more often. The article considers using videoconferencing, as
opposed to Skype, and security issues associated with Skype. It also
considers the impact that Skype may have upon considering witness credibility.
Ultimately, it argues that Australian judicial officers may want to consider
permitting witnesses to testify by Skype …

An Analysis Of Band-Making Traditions At The Mortuary Site Of Uraca In The Majes Valley, Department Of Arequipa, Peru, Samantha Seyler

Theses & ETDs

The coastal valleys of the far south of Peru have received relatively little attention in the archaeological literature on the Andes. Recently, however, scholars have begun to examine this area to better understand the relationship between these valleys and the Central Andean cultural sphere. Of particular interest are the dynamics between the south coastal valleys of Peru and the Wari heartland during the Middle Horizon. This research aims to better understand Wari methods of expansion and control by examining Wari presence in areas on the periphery. During the summer of 2014 Cassandra K. Scaffidi and Manuel García Márquez conducted excavations …

Access: Graffiti Through A Privliged Lens, Jeanine Tatlock Jan 2015

Access: Graffiti Through A Privliged Lens, Jeanine Tatlock

Theses & ETDs

The artwork produced in partial fulfillment of this thesis conflates techniques of graffiti, such as stenciling and tagging, with elements of branding and graphic design to reflect on capitalist influences on the production and marketing of Art. Privilege, barriers, and access to certain institutions and social spheres are also examined through performance, design elements, and graffiti. In simulating graffiti to subvert the institutions of privilege and exclusivity where the graffiti is performed, the art becomes a signifier of the privilege and exclusivity derived from these surrounding institutions that may otherwise go unnoticed. Themes in this essay are situated by an …

Why Do I Fall For The Elf, When I Am No Orc Myself? The Implications Of Virtual Avatars In Digital Communication, Sercan Sengun Jan 2015

Why Do I Fall For The Elf, When I Am No Orc Myself? The Implications Of Virtual Avatars In Digital Communication, Sercan Sengun

Faculty Publications – Creative Technologies

Various recent research on online avatars debated their authenticity in terms of representing the individuals that manage them. Seemingly users would construct an enhanced or idealized presence of themselves online, yet fail to realize that others also do so when seeking information of other users through their avatars. This phenomenon becomes even more curious inside online video game spaces, since video game avatars are already expected to be unrelated with their players but are still seen as sources of information about them. This study approaches the issue as a communication problem and tries to explain the process through Berger’s Uncertainty …

Who Owns Villa La Pietra? The Story Of A Family, Their Home, And An American University Under Italian Law, Felicia Caponigri

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

In 1994 Harold Acton, son of Arthur Acton, an English art dealer in Florence, and Hortense Mitchell Acton, an American banking heiress, donated his family home, Villa La Pietra, to New York University. Today, this Tuscan villa is at the center of a declaration of paternity lawsuit and a claim of inheritance brought by Liana Beacci, Arthur Acton's daughter by his Italian secretary. In this Note, Felicia Caponigri presents the facts of the case, focusing on the provenance of the Villa, and the procedural posture of the case. Caponigri applies Italian law to argue that New York University might claim …

Calculus For Decision Systems, Jorge Antonio Samayoa Ranero Jan 2015

Calculus For Decision Systems, Jorge Antonio Samayoa Ranero

Open Access Dissertations

The conceptualization of the term "system" has become highly dependent on the application domain. What a physicist means by the term system might be different than what a sociologist means by the same term. In 1956, Bertalanffy [1] defined a system as " a set of units with relationships among them". This and many other definitions of system share the idea of a system as a black box that has parts or elements interacting between each other. This means that at some level of abstraction all systems are similar, what eventually differentiates one system from another is the set of …

A Study Of The Effects Of Usability On Risk Perception And User Affinity Of Risk Finder, Erin Jacobson

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

In October 2013, Climate Central, a non-profit research organization, released Risk Finder, an online, interactive mapping tool that allows users to explore the effects of rising sea level in a specific geographic region. A research study for client Dan Rizza of Climate Central was conducted on the usability of the Risk Finder tool in an effort to identify potential system errors, improve user experience, and assess the future use of this tool based on user perception. Primary investigators Dr. Daniel Richards and Mrs. Megan McKittrick utilized an approach known as “productive usability,” which allows researchers to openly observe participants …

Finding Unfound_Graphic Hybridity, Yaeyoung Park

Theses and Dissertations

Hybridity is the result when visual form, color or tools interact. While not every combination of multiple elements result in success, I believe creativity, intuition and serendipity determines the successful hybridity. This is the documentation of my journey to develop a personal definition of successful hybridity in graphic design.

Image Similarity Using Dynamic Time Warping Of Fractal Features, Ahmed Ibrahim, Craig Valli Jan 2015

Image Similarity Using Dynamic Time Warping Of Fractal Features, Ahmed Ibrahim, Craig Valli

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Hashing algorithms such as MD/SHA variants have been used for years by forensic investigators to look for known artefacts of interest such as malicious files. However, such hashing algorithms are not effective when their hashes change with the slightest alteration in the file. Fuzzy hashing overcame this limitation to a certain extent by providing a close enough measure for slight modifications. As such, image forensics is an essential part of any digital crime investigation, especially in cases involving child pornography. Unfortunately such hashing algorithms can be thwarted easily by operations as simple as saving the original file in a different …

Decision Making And Communication Process Assessment Of Nasa Using Three Change Requests From The Space Launch System Program, Karen Campbell Hicks

Theses

This thesis investigated the communication and decision making process as part of the Systems Engineering practices at the NASA/Marshall Center to determine its level of effectiveness. Data was collected across three change requests to assess how decisions were made, how the decisions were communicated, and whether a process mattered in the formulation and dissemination of those decisions. Data results revealed the comprehensive decision making process for the technical change requests to be effective. Evidence revealed that the process was sufficiently tailored to accommodate the need of each individual technical change which promoted effective communication amongst the stakeholders in the formulation …

Imaging The Early Cold War: Photographs In Life Magazine, 1945-1954, Kathryn L. Lewis Jan 2015

Imaging The Early Cold War: Photographs In Life Magazine, 1945-1954, Kathryn L. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes Life’s early coverage of the Cold War (1945-1954) in order to explicate this publication’s creation and reinforcement of prescriptive attitudes about this ideological engagement through photographically illustrated news. By uncovering Life’s editorial approach this project proposes a new diagnostic for evaluating documentary images by re-configuring Hayden White’s incisive theory of emplotment—the process of engendering historical narratives with meaning— through semiotic models proposed by Louis Hjelmslev and Roland Barthes, thereby offering a useful tool for future scholars to re-examine modern media’s transition towards prizing visual immediacy over critical engagement.

Life’s editors’ link narrative devices …

A Model Modality: Assessing The Educational Integrity Of The Blended Basic Course, Michael G. Strawser Jan 2015

A Model Modality: Assessing The Educational Integrity Of The Blended Basic Course, Michael G. Strawser

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

The creation of a hybrid/blended basic course aligns with university goals and may increase viable curricular options for student success. If universities offer hybrid courses, they ought to do so based on data-driven evidence confirming that face-to-face (F2F) and hybrid courses are comparable. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the learning outcome achievement of students enrolled in a blended (hybrid) version of the basic course. More specifically, a comparative analysis of student affective, cognitive, and behavioral learning outcome achievement in face-to-face sections and hybrid sections was conducted. This study also examined affect for course delivery format for …

For this study, all faculty members participating in cohort #2 of the program responded to surveys and wrote reflection papers regarding their experiences. Their responses were analyzed and conclusions drawn. …

Sketchy Lesbians: "Carol" As History And Fantasy, Patricia White Jan 2015

Sketchy Lesbians: "Carol" As History And Fantasy, Patricia White

Film & Media Studies Faculty Works

Rather than a forward-looking lesbian representation, Todd Haynes's Carol, an adaptation by Phyllis Nagy of Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel, The Price of Salt, looks to images and affective investments of the past to explore lesbian representability, the historical discourses and aesthetic codes through which desire between women can be recognized. The collaboration brings together preoccupations from Haynes's oeuvre and themes from Highsmith's that question reception of the film in terms of a happy ending and future progress. Through evocative art direction, camerawork, and star performances, the film invites the viewer to share the perspective of Therese (Rooney Mara), …

Ce 575 Syllabus: Addictions Counseling Multicultural Concerns, Mitch Moore

Counselor Education Syllabi

This course introduces students to multicultural aspects of chemical dependency. Multiculturalism is an important concept to examine in relation to addictions counseling as our clients’ age, race, gender identity, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, or disability status can impact the course of addiction or treatment. In this course, students will examine cultural influences as they converge with the substance use and co-occurring disorders. Developing cultural competence in addictions counseling is emphasized. Process addictions (e.g., gambling) also will be examined through a multicultural lens.
