The Right To Work In Argentina : Job Policy And Economic Rights In A Worker Cooperative, Patricia Kent
The Right To Work In Argentina : Job Policy And Economic Rights In A Worker Cooperative, Patricia Kent
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis provides an exploration of an empresa recuperada por sus trabajadores (worker recovered enterprise, ERT) case study in Argentina in an effort to understand their impact to employment retention during economic crisis. Part of the larger social upheaval resulting from failed economic liberalization during the 1990s, ERTs attempt to implement an alternative economic development strategy through self-management of previously private enterprises. This thesis explores one ERT located in Florencio Varela, Argentina, in an effort to understand the impact the ERTs have in local communities in terms of employment retention and social capital production. Lastly, the analysis examines the role …

Strategic Planning And Collaborative Effort To Preserve The University’S History, Xiaohua (Cindy) Li
Librarian Publications
Since established in 1963, Sacred Heart University has accumulated tens of thousands of photographs that have recorded the significant moments or important occasions in the university’s history. Over the years, more and more photos have been taken but the effort to preserve the valuable information has not been up to the pace of the photo accumulation. Realizing some photos started to deteriorate due to the physical space in which these images were stored and the university was about to lose the visual data, the Office of University Advancement (OUA) began to seek a long-term solution that would help them manage …

Indications Of Ancient Maya Soil Resource Management In Northern Belize, Austin Michael Ulmer
Indications Of Ancient Maya Soil Resource Management In Northern Belize, Austin Michael Ulmer
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to use soil chemical properties, particularly carbon isotopes to describe the agricultural landscape in the Blue Creek region on the Rio Bravo Escarpment in northwestern Belize. The primary question associated with this study focused on the comparative agricultural potential of the soils between the upland karst environment and the lowland coastal plains using the distribution and frequency of ancient Maya maize production. Soil physical features, such as clay concentrations throughout profiles in conjunction with soil chemical properties were used to aid in determining the level of ancient maize production. Isotopic evidence suggests that anciently, …
Bureaucracy Reform, Community Participation And E-Bureaucracy Under Regent Winesa And Regent Putu Artha In Jembrana, Bali, Haryo Ksatrio Utomo, Mega Indah Cinderakasih, Natalie Soebagjo
Bureaucracy Reform, Community Participation And E-Bureaucracy Under Regent Winesa And Regent Putu Artha In Jembrana, Bali, Haryo Ksatrio Utomo, Mega Indah Cinderakasih, Natalie Soebagjo
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
The use of technology in reforming the government bureaucracy, namely e-Bureaucracy in the regency of Jembrana raises the assumption that the modernization of the bureaucracy can be supported by the social system based on cultural values. It is assumed that the implementation of e-Bureaucracy since the leadership of Regent I Gede Winesa was able to reform the bureaucracy in Jembrana. However, the latest research of his successor’s leadership suggests that there is the potential for failure of e-Bureaucracy, ranging from a decrease in function of the J-Net tower, the non-functioning of the rural internet office, and the return to manual …
Women As Economic Providers: Dual-Earner Families Thrive As Women's Earings Rise, Kristin Smith
Women As Economic Providers: Dual-Earner Families Thrive As Women's Earings Rise, Kristin Smith
Carsey Publications
This brief examines married and single women’s contributions to family income using Current Population Survey data for 2000 and 2013. Women’s contributions to family income are essential for most families. This is obviously true for the growing number of single-mother families, but increasingly so for married couple families. While dual-earner families are doing relatively well, family income overall has been stagnant or decreasing among single-earner families, resulting in a widening income gap. Author Kristin Smith reports that of different family types, married couples in which the husband was the primary earner had the highest median family income in 2013 ($101,000), …

Child Protective Services May Link Families To Needed Income Supports, Wendy A. Walsh, Marybeth J. Mattingly
Carsey Publications
A number of public safety-net programs exist to help improve the economic well-being of vulnerable children, but little is known about the extent to which families with a child maltreatment report receive these services over time. In this brief, we examine the incidence of receiving four types of income support both immediately after the child maltreatment report and eighteen months following. The data for this analysis come from the second National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW II), a national sample of children who had a maltreatment report that resulted in an investigation by CPS within a 15-month period …
Coverage Rates Stabilize For Children’S Health Insurance: State Policy Change May Be Needed To Address Remaining Children Without Insurance, Michael J. Staley
Coverage Rates Stabilize For Children’S Health Insurance: State Policy Change May Be Needed To Address Remaining Children Without Insurance, Michael J. Staley
Carsey Publications
This brief uses data from the American Community Survey to estimate children’s health insurance coverage from 2008–2013 across the United States as well as by region, place type, and type of coverage. Author Michael Staley reports that decreases in rates of private insurance coverage among children were offset by increases in rates of coverage by public insurance in 2013, keeping national coverage stable at 92.9 percent. Rates rose in the West, continuing a trend since 2008. However, at 91 percent, rates among children there are still lower than in the Northeast and Midwest, where rates have stabilized above 94 percent. …

Discourse, Speculation And Multidisciplinarity: Designing Urban Futures, Ingi Helgason, Michael Smyth, Søren Rosenbak, Ivica Mitrović
Nordes Conference Series
This paper presents a design case study of a summer school that brought together a multidisciplinary group of early-career professionals to explore ideas relating to new technologies in an urban context. The organisers of the summer school took an explicitly designinformed approach to the event, specifically a ‘critical design’ approach. The aspiration of the organisers was that the school activities would lead to the creation of an exhibition of artefacts and visual media expressing the ideas explored during the school. The expectation of generating exhibition quality outputs influenced the participants’ experience of the event, and this paper describes the process …

Native Products: Nordes 2015 Edition, Costas Bissas, Vasso Asfi, Loukas Angelou
Nordes Conference Series
Native Products is an initiative that could act as a stepping point towards the exploration of alternative mediums and processes of the production cycle. Papairlines have developed a workshop sequence through which flora is transformed into a paste that can be later used as a raw material to cast objects. The process uses household tools and herbs. During this workshop participants will be part of the different stages of processing the raw materials and create small utilitarian objects, while contributing to a debate on how production takes place today and what alternatives can be developed in the current socioeconomic status.
Energy In The Ecopolis, Sara C. Bronin
Energy In The Ecopolis, Sara C. Bronin
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation demand a paradigm shift in urban development. Currently, too many of our cities exacerbate these problems: they pollute, consume, and process resources in ways that negatively impact our natural world. Cities of the future must make nature their model, instituting circular metabolic processes that mimic, embrace, and enhance nature. In other words, a city must be a regenerative city or, as some say, an “ecopolis.” So, how to get there—to ecopolis—from here? In this Comment, I propose a partial answer by focusing on certain legal frameworks that must be reenvisioned to enable the …

Feasibility And Cost Analysis Of Composting Campus Dining Food Waste In Cal Poly's Compost Facility, Lester Cheung
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Composting helps our environment and promotes healthy soil, which decreases the need for fertilizer, pesticides, and supplemental water. Reducing the amount of food waste in landfills has significant environmental, economic, and social benefits. The main goal of this project and a sustainable campus involves increasing awareness of environmentally sustainable developments such as Cal Poly’s compost facility. This senior project discusses the feasibility, cost analysis, and evaluation of Campus Dining’s food waste in Cal Poly’s compost facility. If Cal Poly were to incorporate Campus Dining food waste into their compost facility, Cal Poly would be saving $16,185 a year on tipping …

Where Does Bicycling For Health Happen? Analysing Volunteered Geographic Information Through Place And Plexus, Greg P. Griffin, Junfeng Jiao
Where Does Bicycling For Health Happen? Analysing Volunteered Geographic Information Through Place And Plexus, Greg P. Griffin, Junfeng Jiao
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Research on the role of bicycling for health through physical activity has been limited by the lack of information on where bicyclists ride. New big data sources available through smartphone-based applications provide a rich source to provide bicycle volume data more comparable to the scale of information available for automotive and public transit modes. In the case of smartphone apps for fitness tracking, results of this data can be used similar to the growing application of global positioning systems for automotive travel surveying. The authors evaluate data from Travis County, Texas for the purpose of determining where bicyclists ride, primarily …

Common Evaluation Tools Across Multi-State Programs: A Study Of Parenting Education And Youth Engagement Programs In Children, Youth, And Families At-Risk, Pamela B. Payne, Daniel A. Mcdonald
Journal of Extension
Community-based education programs must demonstrate effectiveness to various funding sources. The pilot study reported here (funded by CYFAR, NIFA, USDA award #2008-41520-04810) had the goal of determining if state level programs with varied curriculum could use a common evaluation tool to demonstrate efficacy. Results in parenting and youth engagement indicated that with effort to select valid and reliable measures, it is possible to use common measure across curricula. Lessons learned including evaluating goodness of fit are discussed in regards to the process of conducting common measures evaluations.

Hands-On Training Emphasized In The Oregon Master Beekeeper Program, Carolyn Breece, Ramesh Sagili
Journal of Extension
Honey bee colony declines have garnered immense public interest, and consequently there is a significant demand for the dissemination of apicultural information. The Oregon Master Beekeeper Program was developed in response to this increased interest in bees and beekeeping and a demand for a credible educational program for new beekeepers. The program focuses on hands-on training by matching students with volunteer mentors. Upon completion of the beginning (Apprentice) level, trained students may enroll in the advanced (Journey) level. This program has gained popularity and strives to educate beekeepers to promote sustainable beekeeping in the Pacific Northwest.

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議
Whether a small-scale intensive Service-Learning project makes an impact or not? This is a question we have been asking ourselves over the past ten years. In 2005, this S-L project was initiated to respond to a call from an elementary school located in central Taiwan. Since then, students and faculty of the English Department have been collaborating closely with teachers in the local community. The driving force behind this ten-year long journey is our urge to bridge this English Divide, a socially-rooted issue in education and also the ugly reality we hate to confront. In this AR research study, we …

Ecodistricts In San Francisco: The Implementation Of Neighborhood Regional Planning And Its Potential Effects On Environmental Resilience, Elizabeth M. Juvera
Master's Projects and Capstones
Ecodistricts, or neighborhood-scale, community-driven areas of sustainable development, have emerged internationally and within the U.S. to create models of adaptive environmental design and advanced urban infrastructure. Central SoMa is the first ecodistrict to be planned and implemented in San Francisco, with the intention of revitalizing and greening this urbanized region of the city. At this time, the Central SoMa area has very low biodiversity levels, inefficient infrastructure, and poor water management capabilities. Through the implementation of ecodistricts in San Francisco, the city can integrate physical and behavioral sustainability measures from existing ecodistricts such as permeable surfaces, green roofs, stormwater management, …

Resilience Of Transport Infrastructure Systems, Pekka Leviäkangas, Aki Aapaoja
Resilience Of Transport Infrastructure Systems, Pekka Leviäkangas, Aki Aapaoja
CSID Journal of Infrastructure Development
This paper proposes a generic resilience framework that is applied to transport infrastructure systems. The framework is based on prior research and literature material on resilience. The paper first reviews some of the relevant literature and builds a resilience model that distinguishes the attributes and sub-attributes of resilience. Then the resilience model and transport system components are merged into single system resilience matrix. The complexity of resilience of a meta-system – a system comprising several sub-systems – is underlined. Finally, the implications on other meta-systems, for example those governed by cities and municipalities, are briefly discussed. In fact, cities and …

Water Hyacinth - The Green Potential, Ratchanon Keawmanee
Water Hyacinth - The Green Potential, Ratchanon Keawmanee
Theses
Aggressive invasion of floating water hyacinth has always been a big problem in Tropical countries, including Thailand. The ever growing amount of water hyacinth has polluted and block the flow of water in many rivers. A current solution for this problem is removal of water hyacinth from the rivers which basically harvest the plants from the rivers and dispose them someplace else. As stated, they are just plain and temporarily solutions, so such a problem still persists as time passes. My idea is to make use of what is so called "natural waste" and turn them into marketable goods which …
