A Grounded Theory Of The Influence Of Black Greek-Lettered Organizations On The Persistence Of African Americans At A Predominantly White Institution, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D.
A Grounded Theory Of The Influence Of Black Greek-Lettered Organizations On The Persistence Of African Americans At A Predominantly White Institution, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D.
Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications
For decades, scholars have documented that predominantly White institutions (PWIs) are not fully meeting the needs of African American students, as these students have reported social isolation, discrimination, and low social integration (Feagin, Vera, & Imani, 1996; Fleming, 1984; Harper, 2013). While the experiences of African American students at PWIs have been well documented, further research on best practices to retain and graduate African American students at PWIs is needed. One particular area where further research is merited concerns African Americans’ involvement in Black Greek-lettered organizations (BGLOs).
Exploring The Context Of Coached Masters Swim Programs: A Narrative Approach, Scott Rathwell, Bettina Callary, Bradley W. Young
Exploring The Context Of Coached Masters Swim Programs: A Narrative Approach, Scott Rathwell, Bettina Callary, Bradley W. Young
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Knowing the psychosocial themes in a specific sport context allows us to understand athletes’ experiences and informs approaches of coaches (Côté et al., 1995) and sport programmers (Danish et al., 2005). Few qualitative studies focus on psychosocial conditions of adult athletes in coached sport settings. The purpose of this study was to capture important psychosocial themes from the perspective of Masters swimmers involved in day-to-day coached swimming environments. Data were collected using semi-structured open-ended interviews with 10 competitive swimmers (5 male, 5 female; M age = 53 years; range: 45-65 years). Analyses revealed four over-arching themes that represented athletes’ a) …

Roar Of The Crowd: Noise-Related Safety Concerns In Sport, Robin Ammon, Kimberly L. Mahoney, Gil Fried, Khadija Al Arkoubi, Dale Finn
Sport Management Faculty Publications
In sport the safety of staff, participants and spectators is of the utmost importance. Therefore, sport venue and event managers should take every precaution to address safety concerns while planning for and executing events or activities. While venue managers have a legal duty to protect fans and participants, federal regulations exist to ensure a safe workplace for all employees, including those at a sports event. This is a conceptual article intended to assist practitioners to identify potentially unexpected hazards within the work environment, as well as strategies to eliminate or manage them. The authors examine existing federal regulations, current research …

Super Bowl Xlix, Richard C. Crepeau
Super Bowl Xlix, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It is a 153 page document made public by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that begins with these awkward sentences: The day of the Super Bowl game (the “Game” or the “Super Bowl”) is America’s unofficial holiday, a day when the attention of an entire nation is focused on the Game in one region between the championship teams of the American and the National Football Conferences. The most highly anticipated annual sports event in North American sports is also a time for festive celebration and civic pride.”

Questioning The Validity Of Race As A Social Construct: Examining Race And Ethnicity In The ‘Rainbow Nation’, Bob Heere, Matthew Walker, Heather Gibson, Brijesh Thapa, Sue Geldenhuys, Willie Coetzee
Questioning The Validity Of Race As A Social Construct: Examining Race And Ethnicity In The ‘Rainbow Nation’, Bob Heere, Matthew Walker, Heather Gibson, Brijesh Thapa, Sue Geldenhuys, Willie Coetzee
African Social Science Review
Governments have historically classified their populations according to race and ethnicity, which has been done to either exert power over minority groups or ensure equality among these groups. However, viewing ones racial identity through a historical lens raises doubts about the validity of race as a social construct, since the concept has seldom served as a strong foundation for social identity formation. As such, we posit that ethnicity is a more accurate predictor of identification than race. Using South Africa as the research context, we examine whether within each race group ethnic differences exist on national identity and social capital …

Selig Retires, Richard C. Crepeau
Selig Retires, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
On Sunday, with no real NFL Football to clutter the world of sport, the man who I once referred to as the “Acting Commissioner for Life,” will retire. It turned out that the “Acting-Commissioner for Life” was very nearly Commissioner for Life. It is clear that over his long and rocky tenure as Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig left a massive legacy. The business and sport of major league baseball was impacted for good and for ill by the man who began his professional life selling used cars in Milwaukee. He will end his tenure as Commissioner by becoming the …

A Tutorial On Oxidative Stress And Redox Signaling With Application To Exercise And Sedentariness, Robert Buresh, Kris Berg
A Tutorial On Oxidative Stress And Redox Signaling With Application To Exercise And Sedentariness, Robert Buresh, Kris Berg
Faculty Articles
Oxidative stress has been shown to play a role in the etiology of several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. Free radicals and, most prominently, the superoxide radical, result from oxidative metabolism and several enzyme-catalyzed reactions, and endogenous cellular antioxidants dismutate many reactive oxygen species (ROS). Under certain conditions, ROS production can outpace dismutation (e.g., long-term sedentariness and positive energy balance) and the result is oxidative stress, with proteins, lipids, and DNA the most common targets of radicals. However, the molecules that contribute to oxidative stress also appear to participate in vital cell signaling activity that supports …

Title Ix And The Impact Of Athletic Leadership, Ceceilia Parnther, Jennifer Deranek, Scott Michel
The Hilltop Review
Abstract
This literature review will discuss the history of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 and its value in higher education today through a critical feminist thought lens. It is known that despite Title IX, gender equality does not exist in intercollegiate athletics. In addition to discussing the history of Title IX, the article will highlight the challenges and triumphs of female athletic directors and senior women’s administrators and briefly discuss the role on coaches, athletic trainers and student-athletes.
Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 provided equal opportunities for women in athletics and academics …

The Examination Of Upper Limb Ambidexterity In Wrestling Snap Down Technique, Nicholas Decastro, Tong-Ching Tom Wu
The Examination Of Upper Limb Ambidexterity In Wrestling Snap Down Technique, Nicholas Decastro, Tong-Ching Tom Wu
Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to bilaterally examine the kinematic motions of the upper extremity in the snap down technique. Six male collegiate wrestlers were recruited and performed a total of ten snaps, five from each side. A standard two-dimensional kinematic analysis was conducted in the upper extremity. The results showed no significant difference between right and left side in the angular displacement, velocity and acceleration. These findings indicated that upper limb ambidexterity was achieved by these college wrestlers in the study. From further video analysis, the study found some wrestlers appeared to use their shoulder and elbow as …
