Are Self-Made Men Made Equally? An Experimental Test Of Impartial Redistribution And Perceptions Of Self-Determination, David Chavanne, Kevin Mccabe, Maria Pia Paganelli
Are Self-Made Men Made Equally? An Experimental Test Of Impartial Redistribution And Perceptions Of Self-Determination, David Chavanne, Kevin Mccabe, Maria Pia Paganelli
Economics Faculty Research
Using a laboratory experiment, we examine if third party redistribution from a “Have” to a “Have-not” is affected by (1) whether a Have’s advantage is in some way self-determined and (2) whether self-determination occurs in two dimensions compared to one dimension. We find that redistribution decreases if a Have earns an advantageous opportunity or earns income. But we also find that redistribution does not decrease any further if a Have earns both an opportunity and income. These results suggest that, in line with existing work, the perception that advantages are self-determined matters for redistribution. But the results also suggest that, …
The Oligopoly Of Academic Publishers In The Digital Era, Vincent Larivière, Stefanie Haustein, Philippe Mongeon
The Oligopoly Of Academic Publishers In The Digital Era, Vincent Larivière, Stefanie Haustein, Philippe Mongeon
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The consolidation of the scientific publishing industry has been the topic of much debate within and outside the scientific community, especially in relation to major publishers’ high profit margins. However, the share of scientific output published in the journals of these major publishers, as well as its evolution over time and across various disciplines, has not yet been analyzed. This paper provides such analysis, based on 45 million documents indexed in the Web of Science over the period 1973-2013. It shows that in both natural and medical sciences (NMS) and social sciences and humanities (SSH), Reed-Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer, and …

This autoethnographic account details the author's ongoing struggle with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how leisure was integral in his journey toward recovery. By showing the mental and emotional struggles of life with the disorder, this paper offers an alternative viewpoint from the traditional scientific studies of PTSD, which bury soldiers' voices under layers of analysis. The purpose of this paper is to deepen and expand an understanding of both combat-related PTSD and the power of leisure in an individual's recovery from combat trauma.
The Stigma Of Obesity: Examining The Relationship Between Bmi And The Treatment Of Pain In Surgery Patients, Dennis H. Sewchuk Jr.
The Stigma Of Obesity: Examining The Relationship Between Bmi And The Treatment Of Pain In Surgery Patients, Dennis H. Sewchuk Jr.
Open Access Dissertations
There is a growing epidemic of obesity in the United States and a corresponding increase in the number of morbidly obese patients receiving healthcare. Despite the increasing focus and research on obesity over the years, the prevalence of obesity in the United States has continued to worsen. A stigma against obesity exists in the general public including among healthcare professionals. Attitudes and bias of healthcare professionals against obesity can negatively affect judgment and choices related to the enactment of care, affecting both the quality of healthcare delivered and patient outcomes. Studies have shown that stigmatization against groups of patients such …

Domestic Violence Against Women In Bangladesh: A Review Of The Literature And The Gaps To Fill-In By Future Interventions, Anisur Rahman Khan
Domestic Violence Against Women In Bangladesh: A Review Of The Literature And The Gaps To Fill-In By Future Interventions, Anisur Rahman Khan
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Although Bangladesh maintains inadequate records of the various forms of violence against women, it is clear that domestic violence against women is the most insidious problem for women in Bangladesh. For many Bangladeshi women, home is a place of pain and humiliation and violence is an integral part of everyday life. Domestic violence against women, perpetrated by their husbands, is a multi-faceted problem in Bangladesh. The efforts of the scholars to empirically investigate the problem are inadequate and a lot of issues are yet to be explored. This review is an attempt to present the findings of the major empirical …

The Law's Clock, Frederic Bloom
The Law's Clock, Frederic Bloom
Publications
Time is everywhere in law. It shapes doctrines as disparate as ripeness and retroactivity, and it impacts litigants of every status and type--the eager plaintiff who brings her case too early, the death-row inmate who seeks his stay too late. Yet legal time is still scarcely studied, and it remains poorly understood. This Article makes new and better sense of that time. It begins with an original account of time as a tool of institutional power, tracking the relocation of that power from the first western cathedrals to the earliest Supreme Court. It then links time's revealing past to our …

The Mcdonaldization Of Academic Libraries?, Brian Quinn
The Mcdonaldization Of Academic Libraries?, Brian Quinn
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
George Ritzer, a sociologist at the University of Maryland, has proposed an influential thesis that suggests that many aspects of the fast food industry are making their way into other areas of society. This article explores whether his thesis, known as the McDonaldization thesis, is applicable to academic libraries. Specifically, it seeks to determine to what extent academic libraries may be considered McDonaldized, and if so, what effect McDonaldization may be having on them. It also investigates some possible alternatives to McDonaldization, and their implications for academic libraries.
Engendering The Past: An Archaeological Examination Of The Precontact Lifeways Of Women At Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park, Cathy J. Beecher
Engendering The Past: An Archaeological Examination Of The Precontact Lifeways Of Women At Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park, Cathy J. Beecher
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis examines three lines of evidence within the precontact archaeological record around Yellowstone Lake, focusing on elucidating female-specific lifeways. This work is undertaken as a means to explore concepts of gender within precontact archaeological contexts. This aim is accomplished using statistical analysis of lithic tool distribution patterns, ethnohistoric information on plants found through archaeobotanical assays and the microspatial examination of cultural fire features.
Variation in the use of obsidian and chert for unifacial tool manufacture indicates potential restrictions on the manufacture of gender specific tools as these stone resources become less available. In addition, a frame-of-reference is built by …
Statistical Analysis Of Interval-Censored Failure Time Data, Alicia Worrall
Statistical Analysis Of Interval-Censored Failure Time Data, Alicia Worrall
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, we will examine the statistical methods used in survival analysis applied to interval-censored failure time data. Interval-censored data is not widely used due to the fact that it is more difficult to work with. However, the same methods commonly used for random- censoring can be applied to interval-censoring as well. This includes finding the basic quantities, survival curves, regression analysis, Bayesian regression analysis and a comparison between interval-censored data and random-censored data.
Catholic Theology And The Enlightenment (1670–1815), Ulrich Lehner
Catholic Theology And The Enlightenment (1670–1815), Ulrich Lehner
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This chapter examines the Catholic Church’s engagement with the Enlightenment from 1670–1815. It considers Catholic philosophies of the Enlightenment and new conceptualizations of natural law. The chapter also explores Catholic exegetical discussions during the period, showing how Enlightenment concerns enabled new styles of attention to the Scriptural text, new Patristic scholarship, and the origins of the later liturgical movement. Jansenist and Gallican theologies stimulated reflection on eccelesiology and the papacy, and a variety of thinkers developed new theologies of the state, and of the economy. This period also saw the rise of the Catholic ultramontanism that was to mark Church …

Curbing Corruption, Financial Development And Income Inequality, Sourav Batabyal, Abdur Chowdhury
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
In recent years, many of the Commonwealth countries have experienced a reduction in income inequalities due to the development of financial markets and intermediaries. At the same time, widespread corruption among public officials, civil servants, or politicians from these countries have been well documented. A key public policy question is whether the return to financial sector development at the level of massive corruption, exacerbate income inequality, offsetting the benefits of financial development. Using a panel data of 30 Commonwealth countries over the period of 1995–2008, it is found that the high rates of corruption in the Commonwealth countries are crowding …

Writing Against The Ethos Of Individualism : A Study In Contemporary Multiethnic American Fiction, Manahari Adhikari
Writing Against The Ethos Of Individualism : A Study In Contemporary Multiethnic American Fiction, Manahari Adhikari
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Drawing from existential philosophy, neuroscience, and social psychology, in Writing Against the Ethos of Individualism: A Study in Contemporary Multiethnic American Fiction, I investigate the representation of the self in fictions by Bharati Mukherjee, Leslie Marmon Silko, Maxine Hong Kingston, Sandra Cisneros, and Toni Morrison. I argue that these writers imagine the lives of their fictional characters in terms of the phenomenology of existence and reveal how subjective experiences and personal relationships influence who these characters are and who they become. In imagining a self's authentic ontology in relation to others, multiethnic writers not only write against the dominant narratives …
A Legal Analysis Of School Vouchers And The Social Justice Impact, Michael Patrick Ryan
A Legal Analysis Of School Vouchers And The Social Justice Impact, Michael Patrick Ryan
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
While our nation's best students can generally be found in predominately white, suburban, and middle to upper-middle class school districts, our weakest students can generally be found in predominately inner-city school districts with high minority populations. To address the disparities between schools a variety of reforms, initiatives, and programs have been created and implemented -- with seemingly little if any long-lasting positive effects. It is this researcher's contention that the one reform movement that is different from the other measures is school choice. It is different because it is the only reform measure that leaves the decision on what is …
A Phenomenological Analysis Of Gender Integration Policies In The U.S. Military, 1980 To 2013, Tiffany L. Bohm
A Phenomenological Analysis Of Gender Integration Policies In The U.S. Military, 1980 To 2013, Tiffany L. Bohm
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This project investigates the gender integration policies of the U.S. Military between 1980 and 2013. I argue that gender integration policies highlight male service members and create a status of privilege. Policies enacted during the 1980s and 1990s recognized that in a technologically advanced military, more women could be used to fill roles previously reserved for men, yet women were prevented from filling every position and in some cases, faced discrimination. Male privilege was perpetuated through gender integration policy that used specific kinds of language, thus reinforcing the preferred masculine or male identity in the military. While in other instances, …

Autistic Texts And Textual Accounts Of Autism : The Interdependence Of 20th - And 21st - Century Science And Literature Through The Rhetorical Phenomenon Of Autism, John Joseph Marinan Iv
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, I illustrated how throughout the 20th and 21st centuries the science community has officially identified and objectified autism: first, by connecting it with psychoanalysis through schizophrenia; second, by creating other categories such as infantile autism and Asperger syndrome that focused on psychological and medical factors; third, by pointing to Theory of Mind applications that emphasized brain chemistry; and finally, by tracing recent theories of morphology relating to mirror neurons and rapid early brain growth. Despite attempts to define autism as a diagnostic term imbued with empirical qualities, the process of writing about it also created autism as …
Employee Engagement In An Economic Downfall : Perspectives Of First-Line Supervisors, Susan K. Warren
Employee Engagement In An Economic Downfall : Perspectives Of First-Line Supervisors, Susan K. Warren
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study explored how the country's recession and road back to normalcy affected employee engagement at the micro or work-results level of the organization. It investigated how employee engagement manifests itself in the workplace, the role of the first-line supervisor in fostering employee engagement, and how tough economic times influenced employee engagement. In the study, supervisors shared examples and provided descriptions of the engaged and disengaged employees within their work settings. They also described changes in their work environments that they attributed to recessionary times.;A qualitative inquiry approach was used to address meaning-making about engagement from the perspectives of supervisors. …

How counselors define their personal guiding theory, what factors have influenced their development, and how they incorporate their personal guiding theory into their counseling with clients was examined. Thirteen participants were recruited through reputational and snowball sampling. All participants held at least a master's degree in counseling, were a licensed counselor in their state of practice, and had at least 10 years of counseling experience. Participants engaged in a 2-part interview process following Seidman's Interview Structure. Portraiture methodology was used to analyze the …
Conceptual Metaphors In Ayn Rand's "Philosophy: Who Needs It", Ilya Startsev
Conceptual Metaphors In Ayn Rand's "Philosophy: Who Needs It", Ilya Startsev
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis analyzes metaphorical constructions in Ayn Rand's speech and essay "Philosophy: Who Needs It." Metaphors as condensed analogies and Lakovian conceptual metaphors play an important role in constructing Objectivist worldview and reframing the audience's views. Rand identifies philosophy by using three metaphors: Mind Is Computer, Life Is A Battle, and the novel Philosophy Is War. The frames derived from the metaphorical constructions are intercompared through some Objectivist non-fiction to show a consistent worldview. Rand's rhetoric is also known to influence movement conservatives, and this connection is found through conceptual metaphors Capitalism Is God's Will and the Strict Father morality.
Intent Through Event : The Promotion Of Identity And Interests At The Olympic Games, Joseph Scanlon
Intent Through Event : The Promotion Of Identity And Interests At The Olympic Games, Joseph Scanlon
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Why do states accept the risks associated with hosting a sporting mega-event? This dissertation argues states pursue sporting mega-events for the purposes of promoting identity and interests. Specifically, this dissertation explores the hypothesis that emerging states use sporting mega-events as moments of public diplomacy to facilitate the promotion of identity and pursuit of national interests. This dissertation uses a qualitative case study methodology framed within the constructivist international relations literature. Cases include the 1936 Berlin Olympic Summer Games, 1964 Tokyo Olympic Summer Games, 1980 Moscow Olympic Summer Games, and the 1988 Seoul Olympic Summer Games. To date, the international relations …

Student Perceptions Of A School-Based Mentoring Program And The Implications For Practice, Sharon Yvonne Alexander
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
A suburban high school in Northern Illinois conducted a mentoring program for freshmen students entering the school to assist with transitioning to the new setting. The program, entitled "Link Crew," matched junior- and senior-aged trained peers to groups of freshmen students to share information about the traditions, expectations, and methods to find success in the high school atmosphere. The purpose of this study was to investigate how students who have been involved in a mentoring program talk about and discuss their experience. By understanding student perspective, practicing administrators can become cognizant of students' needs and better prepared to address learning …
Tracking The Gap : A Closer Look At Student- And School-Level Characteristics, Aundrea R.J. Lane
Tracking The Gap : A Closer Look At Student- And School-Level Characteristics, Aundrea R.J. Lane
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The goals of this study were to evaluate achievement gaps between varying sub-group populations (i.e., ethnicity, gender, and socio-economic status) as well as estimate which student-level and or school-level characteristics account for variance in reading growth over time. This longitudinal study followed a cohort of 2,077 students (1st -- 5th grade) nested within one school district's 21 elementary schools. The participant's early literacy (Letter Sound Fluency), reading-curriculum based measure (R-CBM), and Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) scores were analyzed utilizing univariate and multivariate analyses of variance (ANOVAs and MANOVAs). School-level characteristics were entered into hierarchical linear models to evaluate variance …
The Organization Of Indigenous Resistance To Neoliberal Extractive Industry Development In The Cordillera Of The Northern Philippines, Robert Bulanda
The Organization Of Indigenous Resistance To Neoliberal Extractive Industry Development In The Cordillera Of The Northern Philippines, Robert Bulanda
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Over the past half-century, the Philippines has experienced great social changes as social movements have arisen in response to the national government's aggressive implementation of neoliberal development policies. The recent history of the Philippines features an illustrious culture of mass-based organization, as local populations protest national development strategies that promote rapid economic growth and integration into world markets at the expense of local social and environmental concerns. Specifically, an anti-large scale mining social movement in the Philippines has developed in reaction to the liberalization of the national mining industry with the Mining Act of 1995, which opened the country's rich …
The Role Of A Residential Learning Community In The Faith Development Of Catholic College Students, Michael J. Stang
The Role Of A Residential Learning Community In The Faith Development Of Catholic College Students, Michael J. Stang
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The college years are a transformative period for undergraduate students, especially in their spiritual development. Fowler (1981) initially proposed the stages of faith model, and Parks (1986) clarified the unique faith journey experience of college students. There are many aspects in the lives of college students that influence faith development. Residence halls have long been known as having a great impact on student learning and development (Astin, 1993; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). This study examined college student spiritual development by exploring the impact of a residential learning community on the faith development of Catholic college students. This qualitative study examined …
