Conceptualization Of The Memorial Tattoo In Scholarly Literature, Nicole Brown Jan 2015

Conceptualization Of The Memorial Tattoo In Scholarly Literature, Nicole Brown

University Honors Theses

The intent of this study is to examine the "self-help tattoo," specifically the sub-genre of the self-help tattoo, known as the memorial tattoo in scholarly literature. Over the past few decades, tattoos became increasingly popular within the United States' middle- and upper-class communities. The widespread use and increasing acceptance of such body art in Western society have invited researchers in many scholarly fields to interpret the memorial tattoo's meaning. This study finds that the memorial tattoo is conceptualized differently across scholarly fields and there isn't an overarching theoretical framework that all scholars follow.

This new world features extremely complex and competitive organizations that must exist …

Experiences Of Lgbtq Students Attending A University In Rural, Bible Belt America, Eric Joseph Weber Jan 2015

Experiences Of Lgbtq Students Attending A University In Rural, Bible Belt America, Eric Joseph Weber

Online Theses and Dissertations

The experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) students currently attending universities in rural, Bible Belt areas in the United States are unknown. Additionally, there is disconnect noted in the literature between the purpose of a postsecondary educational institution and what is actually experienced by LGBTQ students. While the college experience should promote personal and academic growth that allows students to reach their full potential, LGBTQ students have historically experienced ill-treatment on campuses which accounts for at least some disconnect noted in the literature. This qualitative phenomenological study offered a group of LGBTQ students the opportunity to tell …

Intimate Partners In Crime: Utilizing Life Course To Examine Female Criminality, Emily Ann Hayden Jan 2015

Intimate Partners In Crime: Utilizing Life Course To Examine Female Criminality, Emily Ann Hayden

Online Theses and Dissertations

Employing a life-course framework, this research examines how various relationship typologies expands Sampson and Laub’s (2003) discussion of ‘marriage’ as a crucial mechanism involved in desistence. Moreover, recent contributions to life-course theory has identified a void in the literature in regards to how ‘turning points’ operate within female offenders. As such, this research fills those gaps by re-conceptualizing relationship typologies and focusing on the similarities between marriage and relationships. Two research questions are explored: If marriage is a turning point for crime, do non-marital relationships have a similar effect? If so, do different qualities and typologies of relationship status provoke …

Moved By The Spirit: Evangelical Presbyterian Woman In The Early Modern Atlantic World, Chasity Dominique Hunt

Online Theses and Dissertations

Revivalism existed as a cultural feature within Scottish Presbyterian society decades before the famous transatlantic revivals of the eighteenth-century. Although many aspects of those revivals have been examined, such as the Holy Fairs, historians and scholars have largely overlooked the extensive body of memoirs and accounts featuring Scottish Presbyterian women in Scotland and the greater Atlantic world, and their experiences within these revivals. This study seeks to uncover the relationship of those women to evangelicalism and revivalism as it exists as a cultural event embedded with symbols. In order to accomplish that goal, this paper looks at the history of …

During an emergency, communication is key during all four phases of the emergency management process; preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation. In order to communicate effectively and systematically with the incident management team, emergency managers must establish situational awareness during a disaster. Obtaining optimal situational awareness requires emergency managers to use an assortment of technologies in order to relay the most accurate information in real time. The focus of this research is on those technologies and the …

The Neoliberal Construction Of Immigration As Crisis, Melissa Jeanette Pujol Jan 2015

The Neoliberal Construction Of Immigration As Crisis, Melissa Jeanette Pujol

Online Theses and Dissertations

Historically, Americans have been concerned with immigration, with a particular emphasis on Mexican immigration arising toward the end of the twentieth century. The purpose of this research is to question the framing of current immigration patterns as crises and argue that they are better understood as ‘business as usual’ in the neoliberal state. This paper highlights the connection between neoliberal policies and negative public perceptions of immigrants. Neoliberal policies disenfranchise citizens and immigrants alike, yet the public’s misinterpretation of both economic and immigration issues allows society to blame immigrants for deeply structured social problems. I have outlined the neoliberal economic …

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has garnered a lot of attention by the criminal justice system, the media and, academia. Intimate partner violence laws have seen drastic changes over the past hundred years often coupled with the changes of culture and society. The ongoing struggle of LGBTQ community for equality has not as of yet been a catalyst for drastic legal change. Utilizing narratives from victims of intimate partner violence from around the …

The Fair Market Value Of Public Resources, Bruce R. Huber Jan 2015

The Fair Market Value Of Public Resources, Bruce R. Huber

Journal Articles

This Article explores the problem of public resource sales with particular reference to natural resources managed by the federal government. Lands owned by the United States hold trillions of dollars' worth of natural resources. Federal agencies earn billions in annual revenue from resource sales, yet critics assert that billions more could be reaped if resources were sold for a fair price. Although federal law has increasingly required that agencies price resources at fair market value, this requirement is surprisingly difficult to interpret and even more dfficult to implement and enforce. This Article analyzes the various forces that bear on public …

Grounding Human Rights In Natural Law, John M. Finnis Jan 2015

Grounding Human Rights In Natural Law, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

Of the published reviews of Natural Law and Natural Rights, one of the most, and most enduringly, influential was Ernest Fortin's review-article "The New Rights Theory and the Natural Law" (1982). The present essay takes the occasion of that review's latest republication to respond to its main criticisms of the theory of natural law and natural or human rights that is articulated in Natural Law and Natural Rights. The response deals with a number of fundamental or strategically important issues: the freedom of thought and/or the intellectual autonomy and integrity of work within an intellectual tradition that overlaps with a …

Intimate Partner Criminal Harassment Through A Lens Of Responsibilization, Isabel Grant Jan 2015

Intimate Partner Criminal Harassment Through A Lens Of Responsibilization, Isabel Grant

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Feminist scholars have demonstrated the gendered nature of intimate violence and the tendency to put the responsibility on women to avoid both sexual and physical violence (“responsibilization”). This article applies these insights to the context of intimate partner criminal harassment, which is committed overwhelmingly by men against former female intimate partners. Using criminal harassment decisions over the past decade, this article argues that the elements of the offence—specifically the requirements that the accused cause the complainant to fear for her safety, that this fear be reasonable, and that he intend to harass her—feed into the tendency towards responsibilization. Women are …

Making Strategic Human Capital Relevant: A Time-Sensitive Opportunity, David Kryscynski, Dave Ulrich Jan 2015

Making Strategic Human Capital Relevant: A Time-Sensitive Opportunity, David Kryscynski, Dave Ulrich

Faculty Publications

The domain of strategic human capital is emerging at the intersection of strategy and strategic human resource management. Because it is still in the development phase, its core underlying assumptions have not yet solidified. This presents a unique and time-sensitive opportunity to explore and challenge these core assumptions and, specifically, to evaluate whether these assumptions mesh with the lived experiences of practicing managers. We argue that now is the time for the field to ground itself in practical phenomena so that its insights moving forward can be both academically rigorous and practically relevant. In this paper we illustrate the problems …

Rationale: TH has been successfully utilized by agencies to improve symptom detection and potentially reduce rehospitalization rates. Quantifying program effectiveness through data analysis is a critical step for program improvement, resource allocation, and future strategic planning.

Methods: Utilizing the OASIS-C database, a retrospective analysis was conducted examining 22-months of heart failure …

Rethinking Ethics Assessment In Health Technology Assessment: A Nonlinear Approach, Aimee Zellers Jan 2015

Rethinking Ethics Assessment In Health Technology Assessment: A Nonlinear Approach, Aimee Zellers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary question this dissertation aims to answer is how ethics can be meaningfully integrated into health technology assessment (HTA). The contribution of this dissertation is two-fold. The first is to provide an honest and critical evaluation of current HTA practices, including those that involve ethics assessments and that do not. This evaluation will identify gaps and deficiencies in current HTA practices. The second contribution of this dissertation is to propose an approach for meaningful ethics assessment. The nonlinear approach contains five methodologically sound phases aimed to support both ethics assessment and scientific progress. The approach will be applied to …

Civic Goods And The Machine In Westchester: An Unauthorized Minority Report: The Case Of New Rochelle And Mount Vernon New York, Roxanne Neilson , '15

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

The purpose of this study is to look at what impact shifting demographics in a suburb of New York City has on publicly funded institutions as waves of immigrant groups arrive and then establish themselves. The study answers the question: Does political participation and representation matter; does access to the polity transform subsequent newcomers to the suburbs equally? Is there a case for reparations? I examine the historical record and closely review both the literal and figurative paths that led to the success of some groups as well as the demise of others in two cities in Westchester County New …

Intellectual Disability Discrimination, Kirsti D. Mutz Jan 2015

Intellectual Disability Discrimination, Kirsti D. Mutz

Selected Honors Theses

A lack of understanding concerning individuals with intellectual disabilities has led to exaggerated fears and diminished expectations. Consequently, these individuals have faced social exclusion. Research reveals, however, that societal discrimination can be stunted when people are given both information about and contact with these individuals. This research provides the foundation for a film documentary that provides society with the information and contact required to cultivate positive, inclusive attitudes towards individuals with intellectual disabilities.

A Confident Pluralism, John D. Inazu Jan 2015

A Confident Pluralism, John D. Inazu

Scholarship@WashULaw

The ongoing tension between religious liberty and gay rights is a striking example of our country’s profound and deep differences. But we are also divided over many other issues: immigration, criminal justice, abortion, contraception, poverty, and education, to name a few. Each of these differences pulls at the threads of a purported unity in pursuit of a “common good.” In light of our contemporary situation, this Article argues that we can and must live with deep and irresolvable differences in our beliefs, values, identities, and groups through a “confident pluralism.” A confident pluralism embraces a “right to differ” from state …

The First Amendment's Public Forum, John D. Inazu Jan 2015

The First Amendment's Public Forum, John D. Inazu

Scholarship@WashULaw

The quintessential city park symbolizes a core feature of a democratic polity: the freedom of all citizens to express their views in public spaces free from the constraints of government imposed orthodoxy. The city park finds an unlikely cousin in the federal tax code’s recognition of deductions for contributions made to charitable, religious, and educational organizations. Together, these three categories of tax-exempt organizations encompass a vast array of groups in civil society.

The city park is a traditional public forum under First Amendment doctrine, and the charitable, educational, and religious deductions under the federal tax code function much like a …
