Institutional Change As A Result Of International Accreditation: Business Schools Of Lithuania After The Iron Curtain, Yelena Istileulova, Darja Peljhan Dec 2015

Institutional Change As A Result Of International Accreditation: Business Schools Of Lithuania After The Iron Curtain, Yelena Istileulova, Darja Peljhan

Economic and Business Review

This paper studies the effects of gaining international accreditation in business schools (B-schools) in Lithuania. As in other CEE countries, in Lithuania international accreditation has recently become one of the key solutions to achieving legitimacy for B-schools. Due to the lack of research in this area, the aim of this paper is to explore and unveil the reasons for, and the consequences of the accreditation using an institutional theory framework. A multiple case study methodology is used to answer the research questions. The findings reveal that accreditation effects represent a case of institutional isomorphism, because B-schools seek accreditation to achieve …

Immigration Attitudes And Support For The Welfare State In The American Mass Public, James C. Garand, Ping Xu, Belinda C. Davis Dec 2015

Immigration Attitudes And Support For The Welfare State In The American Mass Public, James C. Garand, Ping Xu, Belinda C. Davis

Political Science Faculty Publications

In this article, we explore the relationship between Americans’ attitudes toward immigrants and immigration and their attitudes toward welfare. Using data from the Cumulative American National Election Study from 1992 to 2012, we find ample evidence of the influence of immigration attitudes on both individuals’ attitudes toward welfare recipients and their attitudes toward increased welfare spending. These immigration effects persist even in the face of statistical controls for attitudes toward African Americans and attitudes toward the poor; indeed, in our models, the magnitude of the effects of immigration attitudes surpasses the magnitude of effects of attitudes toward blacks. Further, our …

Which Came First, People Or Pollution? A Review Of Theory And Evidence From Longitudinal Environmental Justice Studies, Paul Mohai, Robin Saha Dec 2015

Which Came First, People Or Pollution? A Review Of Theory And Evidence From Longitudinal Environmental Justice Studies, Paul Mohai, Robin Saha

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

A considerable number of quantitative analyses have been conducted in the past several decades that demonstrate the existence of racial and socioeconomic disparities in the distribution of a wide variety of environmental hazards. The vast majority of these have been cross-sectional, snapshot studies employing data on hazardous facilities and population characteristics at only one point in time. Although some limited hypotheses can be tested with cross-sectional data, fully understanding how present-day disparities come about requires longitudinal analyses that examine the demographic characteristics of sites at the time of facility siting and track demographic changes after siting. Relatively few such studies …

Small-Scale Projects And Their Potential For Urban Regeneration: Experiences From Eastern Germany, Christina Götz, Ian Cooper, Krassimira Paskaleva-Shapira Dec 2015

Small-Scale Projects And Their Potential For Urban Regeneration: Experiences From Eastern Germany, Christina Götz, Ian Cooper, Krassimira Paskaleva-Shapira

Economic and Business Review

The notion that urban living is composed of multiple, interacting aspects instead of only depending on the condition of buildings is widely known. However, once urban renewal is considered, talk automatically turns to large-scale rebuilding projects. To date, there has been little knowledge exchange about projects that take place on the local level, tackling the socio-cultural dimension of urban life. While not destroying, but transforming, what already exists into something socially valuable, such projects open up a set of opportunities for the urban community. This paper draws upon German case studies to propose a definition for such projects and to …

Measuring Usability In The Database Review Process: Results From A Pilot, Ilana Stonebraker Dec 2015

Measuring Usability In The Database Review Process: Results From A Pilot, Ilana Stonebraker

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The objective of this study is to examine the impact of incorporating user experience study methods into library database purchase and renewal. Purdue University Libraries introduced a heuristic evaluation into an existing yearly database review. Commonly used in usability and human factors engineering, heuristic evaluation is an innovative and dynamic method for librarians to evaluate electronic resources and provide expert feedback to database vendors. A form was developed to streamline the process for the librarians involved. In total, eight librarians evaluated 37 databases as a pilot project. This paper describes the outcome of the pilot.

Police Perceptions Of Their External Legitimacy In High And Low Crime Areas Of The Community, Justin Nix Dec 2015

Police Perceptions Of Their External Legitimacy In High And Low Crime Areas Of The Community, Justin Nix

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Until recently, police legitimacy research has primarily focused on citizen perceptions of the police. However, it may be that the police believe citizens associate other factors, such as distributive justice or performance, with legitimacy. The present study adds to the literature by surveying a nationally representative sample of U.S. police officers about how they believe citizens residing in high and low crime areas of the community evaluate police in terms of legitimacy. Findings suggest that respondents believe procedural justice and distributive justice are important to citizens of both areas in terms of generating trust. At the same time, respondents believe …

The Qualitative Report

Data collection is critical to the social research process. When implemented correctly, data collection enhances the quality of a social research study. However, doctoral students and early career researchers may encounter challenges with data collection. This article reports on the data collection challenges in dissertation research encountered by doctoral students enrolled in a public health program at a southeastern United States urban university. Each doctoral student shared at least one challenge and how it affected the data collection process. Additionally, the doctoral students shared how the identified challenges were addressed or suggested recommendations. Understanding these experiences of doctoral students is …

A Review Of Ethnotheatre: Research From Page To Stage, Andrea E. Lypka Dec 2015

A Review Of Ethnotheatre: Research From Page To Stage, Andrea E. Lypka

The Qualitative Report

In Ethnotheatre: Research from Page to Stage (2011), Johnny Saldaña establishes ethnotheatre as a research method and art form in qualitative inquiry. Envisioned as an ethnotheatre book, various aspects of arts-based inquiry are intertwined in the six chapters, including ethical issues, artistic performance, adaptations of empirical materials in theatrical plays, monologue and dialogue construction, scriptwriting, theatrical design, production rights, copyright registration, and aesthetic language. Drawing on theatre-based studies, each chapter is grounded in literature and provides step-by-step guidelines to how traditional research and data can be reinterpreted, staged, performed, produced, and disseminated as theatrical play. Both the structure of the …

Translating Transformative Human Rights Education Through Visual Languages & Informal Spaces, Jazzmin Chizu Gota

Master's Projects and Capstones

This project examines methods, theories, and practices of translating human rights education through multiple vernaculars. Developed as a workshop in sociocultural syntax deconstruction and an educational human rights education website focused on the domestic population of the US, the project focuses on localizing human rights concepts to the public vernacular of the country. Human rights education (HRE) and media and information literacy (MIL) are expanded and redefined as social literacy, or the ability to navigate and decode the present, complex realities that both HRE and MIL were developed to address. Reframing media and visual arts as an archive of past …

The research classifies relationships as strong and weak ties. An online survey was conducted, in which the majority of the participants were Middle Eastern. The survey investigated two factors that affect people's desire of using the read receipts feature, the social tie with the sender …

Qualitative Contributions To A Randomized Controlled Trial Addressing Hiv/Aids-Stigma In Medical Students, Melissa Marzán-Rodríguez, Nelson Varas-Diaz, Torsten Neilands Dec 2015

Qualitative Contributions To A Randomized Controlled Trial Addressing Hiv/Aids-Stigma In Medical Students, Melissa Marzán-Rodríguez, Nelson Varas-Diaz, Torsten Neilands

The Qualitative Report

Specialized training for healthcare professionals (HCP) in order to reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma must be part of a public health model for HIV/AIDS. Tested interventions to reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma among HCP have been mostly absent from these efforts. A qualitative approach was used to assess stigma reduction within a traditional randomized controlled design in order to better understand how our current stigma intervention worked and was understood by 2nd year medical students. After conducting a quantitative follow up survey one-year post intervention we conducted 20 in-depth qualitative interviews with a subsample of our intervention group participants as part of …

Corporate Governance And Corporate Entrepreneurship, Adam Samborski Dec 2015

Corporate Governance And Corporate Entrepreneurship, Adam Samborski

European Management Studies

The study identifies the relationships between corporate governance and corporate entrepreneurship. The aim of this study is to identify the importance of these relationships and describe the concept of the window of entrepreneurship developed by Sven-Olof Collin and Elin Smith. The method adopted in the paper is the analysis of literature. The analysis conducted by Sven-Olof Collin and Elin Smith indicates that corporate governance mechanisms usually restrain risk behaviors and strategic opportunism – two dimensions of corporate entrepreneurship. However, this concept can be a starting point for further research aimed at deepening the knowledge in the area of corporate governance …

White Faces In A Black Movement: Why Their Voices Matter, Chauncey L. Alcorn

Capstones

This story follows the lives of two white activists in New York's Black Lives Matter movement. It examines the largely ignored impact white activists have had on the BLM movement and also explores the history of white activists in the abolitionist and Civil Rights movements. The climax details a highly-publicized spat between rival Black Lives Matter organizations that happened during a Dec. 4 protest to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Officer Daniel Pantaleo's non-indictment in Garner's death. My main character, a white male, was blamed for causing the rift and was asked to step down from his leadership position in …

How New Is Crowdfunding? The Venture Capital Evolution Without Revolution – Discourse On Risk Capital Themes And Their Relevance To Poland, Denis Frydrych, Tony Kinder Dec 2015

How New Is Crowdfunding? The Venture Capital Evolution Without Revolution – Discourse On Risk Capital Themes And Their Relevance To Poland, Denis Frydrych, Tony Kinder

European Management Studies

This conceptual paper discourses the emergence and development of crowdfunding as a step of the broader risk capital evolution. In doing so, we call for a more careful discussion about whether crowdfunding is the next big thing in risk capital mechanisms or a continuity of risk capital instruments, which matches technological regime changes and aligns to economic and social development. Based on a historical overview of types of funding, we elaborate that the risk capital market follows an evolutionary rather than revolutionary progression, where crowdfunding developed as a continuity of business angel, venture capital and microfinance mechanisms. This paper also …

Authoritarian Member States In International Organizations, Matt Barg Dec 2015

Authoritarian Member States In International Organizations, Matt Barg

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates under which conditions do authoritarian Member States exist in International Organizations that require democratic governance in their treaty law. The European Union is used as a case study along with two of its Member States that are in the process of transitioning to democracy from previous authoritarian regimes—Hungary and Romania. This thesis employs stealth authoritarian theory to analyze how a democratizing Member State may violate these laws and revert to authoritarian governance. It also critiques international enforcement mechanisms to consider their effectiveness to enforce their laws and norms as well as prevent an authoritarian reversal. Finally, cultural …

Folklore And Children’S Literature: A Content Analysis Of The De Grummond Children’S Literature Collection, Colleen E. Smith Dec 2015

Folklore And Children’S Literature: A Content Analysis Of The De Grummond Children’S Literature Collection, Colleen E. Smith

SLIS Connecting

Folklore can be defined as “context, performance, attitude, cultural tastes, and the like” (Toelken, 1996, p.7). With folktale and fairy tales, these stories embody cultural values and morals, aiding in learning a lesson or to keep intact a cultural tradition. Many works of literature serve as models for studies in folklore, offering literary criticism, while allowing ancient traditions and modern traditions to be explored (Toelken, 1996, p. 391). Additionally, most, if not all, written folklore, folktales, and fairy tales were originally passed down verbally, from one generation to the next; these stories are part of oral histories (Toelken, 1996). Many …

Does mind-body awareness lead to mind-body-spirit awareness? How can incorporation of embodiment techniques into physician training foster spirituality as it relates to physicians’ professional healing roles? Based in a constructivist paradigm, this study used a qualitative grounded theory methodology to generate theory about …

The Influence Of Lay Concepts And Causal Theories On Definitions Of Mental Illness And Social Outcomes, Kallen A. Bynum Dec 2015

The Influence Of Lay Concepts And Causal Theories On Definitions Of Mental Illness And Social Outcomes, Kallen A. Bynum

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Lay concepts and causal attribution theories enable lay people to make sense of their social situations, more specifically, their encounters with those suffering from mental disorders by providing informational frameworks and explanations upon which to interpret their circumstances. Thus, lay concepts and causal theories about mental illness play a role in beliefs and behaviors toward those individuals. The current study surveyed 113 undergraduate students to investigate relations between knowledge of mental illness as well as causal attributions and explicit stigma associated with depression and schizophrenia, such as perceived dangerousness and desire for social distance. Scores for schizophrenia and depression were …
