Systematic Literature Review Of The Use Of Rich Media In Stem And Related Education, Tony A. Lowe Dec 2015

Systematic Literature Review Of The Use Of Rich Media In Stem And Related Education, Tony A. Lowe

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

The use of video in pedagogy is well established in the modern classroom with researched understanding of its benefits. Prior literature reviews provide a foundation for the impacts within a wide scope of environments and subjects. These reviews primarily have looked at students and faculty attitudes, learning outcomes, and the impact on attendance. The impact has been spread over general subject matter with little focus on the often challenging topics of STEM education. Many topics in STEM education are highly procedural, such as mathematical proofs or writing code or conducting experiments. Understanding the costs and benefits of using video to …

Applying A Socio-Ecological Framework To Thematic Analysis Using A Statewide Assessment Of Disproportionate Minority Contact In The United States, Dawn X. Henderson, Tiffany Baffour

The Qualitative Report

Disproportionate minority contact (DMC) in the United States represents a critical social challenge to promoting the ideals and values of social justice. The ecological nature of DMC, a phenomenon emerging from the intersection of micro- and macro-level factors, necessitates the application of systems theories in understanding the issue and designing solutions to address it. This article illustrates the application of socio-ecological systems theory in thematic analysis, drawing associations across multiple systems between contributing factors to DMC in the juvenile justice system in North Carolina, USA. Analysis examined data from 6 focus groups comprised of 55 statewide stakeholders involved in the …

Holding Death At Bay Vs. Prolonging Life: Indexing Fatalism And Optimism In The Ideology Of Health, Genetics, And Family History In The U. S. And South Korean Media, Soo Jung Hong, Susan Strauss Dec 2015

Holding Death At Bay Vs. Prolonging Life: Indexing Fatalism And Optimism In The Ideology Of Health, Genetics, And Family History In The U. S. And South Korean Media, Soo Jung Hong, Susan Strauss

The Qualitative Report

Media discourse creates and shapes views of personhood, of possibilities, of wellness, and at the same time, these views and beliefs, in their turn, shape media discourse. Broadcasts of health-related edutainment programs and advertisements are rich sources for the discovery of stances concerning health and illness. We examine media discourse in the United States and South Korea, and uncover consistent indexical patterns pointing to overall ideologies of fatalism in the U.S. and optimism in South Korea. Specifically, from an indexicality-based perspective, we identify the patterned ways in which the ideologies of fatalism and optimism are indexed with regard to agency …

Case Study On Spirituality In Senior Center Education: Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Laura E. Demarse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the deeply personal role of spirituality in adult education as seen through teaching senior citizens and examined the personal manifestation of spirituality through the life experiences of five adult educators. The research questions examined how the participants implement spirituality in their teaching practice, principally informed by their personal definitions of spirituality and how these personal experiences of spirituality influence and shape their work as adult educators. The case study used non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews, which provide the narratives that inform the basis of this study.

Meeting At A Crossroad: Traditional Irish Music And Classical Music Taught In The Same Space, Heather Ann Martin Bixler Dec 2015

Meeting At A Crossroad: Traditional Irish Music And Classical Music Taught In The Same Space, Heather Ann Martin Bixler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The introduction of traditional Irish music to this classical violinist set me on a path of discovery that challenged my listening, my conception, and consequently my performance of classical music. Convinced that this progress in my playing could perhaps be useful to other violinists and musicians in general, I proposed a program for American universities where traditional Irish music is taught alongside Western classical music. I investigate techniques unique to the violin such as bow triplets and articulation, as well as explore areas that apply to all musicians such as tonality/intonation, and improvisation. The second chapter examines in detail the …

Interactive Ad Segmentation: Using Implementation Intentions And Social Referral Advertising To Increase Psa Response Efficacy, Walter Hodges Henley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Marketing has long been involved with both public policy and advertising. PSAs (public service advertisements) are a unique combination of both streams of research. This study examines and explores the interplay of theory (Regulatory Focus fit and implementation intentions) and emerging technology (interactive advertising and social media ad referral) in order to more effectively segment viewers and thus increase the response efficacy of PSAs. Advertising in general and PSAs in particular are both entering a new era as traditional delivery platforms (print, TV, radio) are increasingly giving way to new media (internet, mobile smart phones) that is more dynamic as …

Situating The Self: Identity And Power Relationships In A Pakistani Esl Classroom, Rooh Ul Amin Dec 2015

Situating The Self: Identity And Power Relationships In A Pakistani Esl Classroom, Rooh Ul Amin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In Pakistani universities, English plays the key role in students’ upward academic and social mobility; however students do not always enter universities with equal English language skills. This study, therefore, extensively explores the relationship between English language learners’ (ELLs) access to English via prior schooling (public vs. private), participation in classroom discourses and negotiation of identities and power relationships as situated social processes. Informed by Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital and cultural reproduction complemented with the communities of practice (CoP) approach, this study explores how ELLs’ identity and power relationships in an ESL classroom are shaped by (un)limited cultural capital—the …

Bully Or Dupe?: Governor Chris Christie’S Image Repair On The Bridge Lane Closure Scandal, William L. Benoit Dec 2015

Bully Or Dupe?: Governor Chris Christie’S Image Repair On The Bridge Lane Closure Scandal, William L. Benoit

Speaker & Gavel

In 2013, two lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge – the busiest in the nation – in Fort Lee, NJ, were closed. In January of 2014, it emerged that Christie’s Deputy Chief of Staff Kelley instigated this problem. Governor Christie was accused of retaliating against Fort Lee’s Mayor Mark Sokolich, who had not endorsed Christie’s re-election bid. Christie fired Kelley, held a press conference, and apologized to Sokolich and the people of Fort Lee. Christie’s primary strategies were mortification and corrective action, but he also used denial, differentiation, minimization, and defeasibility to deal with this situation. Minimization was interesting …

The Person We Knew: Perceptions Of The Identity Of Loved Ones With Dementia By Family Caregivers, Amber Jannusch, Dena Huisman Dec 2015

The Person We Knew: Perceptions Of The Identity Of Loved Ones With Dementia By Family Caregivers, Amber Jannusch, Dena Huisman

Speaker & Gavel

While several studies have looked at the identity of dementia patients, most focus on the point of the view of the patient. However, caretakers’ and family members’ view of the identity of the dementia patient is unstudied. This study attempts to see how family caregivers’ view of their family member’s dementia manifests in communication about the loved one. This study is a preliminary examination of family caregivers’ constructions of the identity of their loved one, revealing that caretakers have one of three views: the patient without an identity, the patient as a different person, or the patient as “not lost” …

The Warrior's Wives: A Tragic Opera In Two Acts With A Prologue, Matthew Evan Taylor Dec 2015

The Warrior's Wives: A Tragic Opera In Two Acts With A Prologue, Matthew Evan Taylor

Open Access Dissertations

The "Warrior's Wives" is a tragic opera in two acts that tells the stories of three women – Ikuku, Imiri, and Oku – married to the warrior, Ekpe. Inspired by Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart", this tragedy allows the audience to gain three different perspectives on the shared narrative of the women. I have adapted the story into my own libretto, developing the wives through my own original stories. These stories serve the greater storyline of identity, destiny, and a person's ability to shape their fate through their actions. Through this, the project explores issues of duty, love, fear, motherhood, …

There Goes The Neighborhood: The Effects Of Residency Restrictions On Sex Offenders And The Community, Linde Christine Rush Burkey Dec 2015

There Goes The Neighborhood: The Effects Of Residency Restrictions On Sex Offenders And The Community, Linde Christine Rush Burkey

Theses and Dissertations

Sex offender laws and regulations were enacted with the goal of preventing and reducing sex crimes, however, some scholars have argued sex offender laws may actually contribute to an increase in recidivism as a result of a number of unintended consequences. While there have been numerous studies examining the unintended consequences associated with residency restrictions, no research to date has examined the location of sex offender clusters and how these clusters affect the community and sex crimes within their geographical vicinities. While some researchers have established that the clustering of registered sex offenders occurs in certain geographical areas, further analysis …

The 2012 FOA requested that three of the AIDD data projects work together to include the five U.S. Territories (American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, …

Haunted By History: Specters Of The Past In Literature Of The Global South, April Kathleen Lenoir Dec 2015

Haunted By History: Specters Of The Past In Literature Of The Global South, April Kathleen Lenoir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This project argues that the shared history of slavery, imperialism, and the plantation manifests in 20th Century literature from both the Caribbean and the Southern United States as a haunting and ghostly presence. I utilize both canonical and less well-known authors, with a particular focus on female authors. Authors from both regions write stories of people and places haunted by history as a way to confront the ghosts of slavery and the plantation to allow them a future free of ghosts. Overall I bring together texts that have not been previously read together to show connections between literature of the …

The sources were used to identify warnings signs (red …

Substance Abuse And Academic Performance Among University Students, Jackson Bunch Dec 2015

Substance Abuse And Academic Performance Among University Students, Jackson Bunch

The Catalyst

Substance use by college students has been an issue of concern in our society for many years. After making the transition from high school to college, students generally experience an entirely new, unprecedented level of freedom. They are also exposed to a wide array of new experiences and choices. These factors help to increase the risk of substance abuse among university students. Intuitively, this would lead to the concern that such behavior would result in academic fa ilure, thereby severely limiting a student's chances of future success in life. But is there a connection between substance use and academic performance? …

The purpose of this article is to explore the relationship between social justice leadership and organizational decision making in order to make recommendations for how principals can make more socially just decisions in difficult school contexts. This article begins with a discussion of social justice leadership, facets and theories associated with social justice, and how facets can be contradictory and problematic in practice. New Study The South Essay By David Wharton, Admin

In a cultural climate based on the superficial, one has to wonder how much deeper the annual Elvis Death Day observances go than mere tradition and habit. Can such events be mined for anything worth knowing about the world we live in today? Was there more to be learned from Death Day ten years ago? Twenty years ago? Thirty? Those might be the most interesting questions of all to ask about what happens in Memphis on August 15.

Racial Attitude (Dis)Similarity And Liking In Same-Race Minority Interactions, Randi L. Garcia, Hilary B. Bergsieker, J. Nicole Shelton Dec 2015

Racial Attitude (Dis)Similarity And Liking In Same-Race Minority Interactions, Randi L. Garcia, Hilary B. Bergsieker, J. Nicole Shelton

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two studies investigate the relationship between racial attitude (dis)similarity and interpersonal liking for racial minorities and Whites in same-race and cross-race pairs. In nationally representative and local samples, minorities report personally caring about racial issues more than Whites do (Pilot Study), which we theorize makes racial attitude divergence with ingroup members especially disruptive. Both established friendships (Study 1) and face-to-face interactions among strangers (Study 2) provided evidence for the dissimilarity-repulsion hypothesis in same-race interactions for minorities but not Whites. For minorities, disagreeing with a minority partner or friend about racial attitudes decreased their positivity toward that person. Because minorities typically …
