The Innovation Makerspace: Geographies Of Digital Fabrication Innovation In Greater New York City, Kathryn Dickerson Aug 2015

The Innovation Makerspace: Geographies Of Digital Fabrication Innovation In Greater New York City, Kathryn Dickerson

Theses and Dissertations

Desktop digital fabrication technology has the potential to powerfully alter the economics, geography, and sociology of production. The desktop technology cannot reach its potential for widespread impact until it improves in quality and decreases in price. Makerspaces have emerged in the United States in the last eight years as informal social organizations where innovation in this technology may be occurring. This study examines whether innovation in digital fabrication technology has occurred, or has the potential to occur, at makerspaces in the New York City area.

Birth Outcomes Of Latin Americans In Two Countries With Contrasting Immigration Admission Policies: Canada And Spain, Marcelo L. Urquia, Zoua M. Vang, Francisco Bolumar Aug 2015

Birth Outcomes Of Latin Americans In Two Countries With Contrasting Immigration Admission Policies: Canada And Spain, Marcelo L. Urquia, Zoua M. Vang, Francisco Bolumar

Publications and Research

Background We delved into the selective migration hypothesis on health by comparing birth outcomes of Latin American immigrants giving birth in two receiving countries with dissimilar immigration admission policies: Canada and Spain. We hypothesized that a stronger immigrant selection in Canada will reflect more favourable outcomes among Latin Americans giving birth in Canada than among their counterparts giving birth in Spain. Materials and Methods We conducted a cross-sectional bi-national comparative study. We analyzed birth data of singleton infants born in Canada (2000–2005) (N = 31,767) and Spain (1998–2007) (N = 150,405) to mothers born in Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. We …

I found myself facing some epic declarations and accusations recently: “How do you even have the job that you have?” “And you have a Ph.D. in English! How? How did that happen?” “Should you even be a librarian?”

Aligning Climate Change Adaptation Planning With Adaptive Governance: Lessons From Exeter, Nh, Semra A. Aytur, Jory S. Hecht, Paul Kirshen

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Adaptive governance has been recognized as an integrative approach for analyzing the social, institutional, ecologic, and economic aspects of decision-making to build resilience against climate change. Although closely aligned with adaptive co-management and ecosystem management, adaptive governance is a distinct framework that explicitly focuses on decentralized decision-making through social processes such as collaborative learning, networking, and the promotion of cross-sectoral partnerships to enhance adaptive capacity. In this paper, we explore an ongoing engagement process for climate change adaptation planning in Exeter, New Hampshire, and its alignment with key principles of adaptive governance. Climate change poses multiple challenges to Exeter, including …

The Avengers Disassembled: Deconstructing Gender & Hegemonic Masculinity In Superhero Culture, Matthew James Fleming Aug 2015

The Avengers Disassembled: Deconstructing Gender & Hegemonic Masculinity In Superhero Culture, Matthew James Fleming

Social Justice and Community Engagement

This study explores the construction of gender and manifestation of hegemonic masculinity in comic and superhero culture. It is an investigation into the marginalization and discrimination of “lesser” masculinities that do not conform to the ideals of hegemony as theorized by R.W. Connell. Employing a third-‐wave feminist and masculinity theorist approach to gender and sexuality theory, this study considers the massive expansion of comic culture from the early 1940s through the early twenty-‐first century, and the many ways in which gender and sexuality have been constructed in these narratives. The research illustrates the gross injustice of an idealized version of …

Tradition, Innovation, And The Value Of The Liberal Arts, Paul Jay Aug 2015

Tradition, Innovation, And The Value Of The Liberal Arts, Paul Jay

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

My main message about defending the humanities and liberal arts is that divided we lose. Divided we lose. What's great about our disciplines, collectively, is the way in which they preserve and value the past, but in a context in which that past is subject to reflective and constructive critique, so that the ways in which we think about what constitutes the human keeps changing, and the collection of texts, ideas, historical events, material realities, and cultural forms we discuss with our students keeps expanding as well. The liberal arts are living arts. They are about both the perpetuation and …

Reframing New Art Teacher Support: From Failure To Freedom, Christina Hanawalt Aug 2015

Reframing New Art Teacher Support: From Failure To Freedom, Christina Hanawalt

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In order to support new art teachers and encourage them as leaders of contemporary art education curricula, those invested in the preparation and development of beginning art teachers must examine the forces at play in new teachers’ professional lives, as well as the problems with existing support structures. In this article, I present seven perspectives on the new art teacher experience, ranging from feelings of failure, to problems inherent in preparation and induction practices, to issues of teacher identity and socialization, to the pursuit of professional agency within school cultures. I suggest readers view these perspectives as seven artworks hanging …

Failure To Be A “Real American”? → Challenging Failure: An Impetus To Shape Scholarship And Teaching, Christina Chin Aug 2015

Failure To Be A “Real American”? → Challenging Failure: An Impetus To Shape Scholarship And Teaching, Christina Chin

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The author reflects on personal experiences, highlighting vignettes of her perceived “failure to be a ‘real American,’” and recounts these stories through her own voice. With the hopes that her journey might inspire, inflame empathic frustrations with an inegalitarian status quo, and remind others of how important it is for us to participate in fighting for justice, she shares her experiences and developing understandings as she has learned to embrace more counterhegemonic scholarship and practices. She describes how her childhood experiences and daily life experiences as an adult have shaped her work as a researcher and teacher of art education. …

Access And Failure, Beth Balliro Aug 2015

Access And Failure, Beth Balliro

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Many art education advocates call for expanded arts offerings in schools, particularly in urban settings. These calls for greater and more equitable arts access are presented as efforts toward racial and social justice, yet often lack a vision for a culturally affirming pedagogy. Through the dialogue of the author and her former student, this article explores how more arts access, without significant pedagogical revamping, may in fact reinforce the persistent failure of urban schools to provide purposeful education, particularly for Black male artists.

Reflective Communities: Mentoring Teacher Candidates During The (In)Between Spaces Of The Practicum, Joana Hyatt Aug 2015

Reflective Communities: Mentoring Teacher Candidates During The (In)Between Spaces Of The Practicum, Joana Hyatt

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article critiques traditional student teaching formats that fail to examine the social conditions of the spaces between the time of becoming and the place of being educators during practicum fieldwork. The lack of negotiable spaces for student teachers to resolve problematic situations, myths, cultural differences, and relational aspects of teaching have been documented. Exploring the methods of arts-based inquiry, a group of teacher candidates illustrated their experiences of becoming art educators by producing artwork, videos, and narratives. Student teachers then reflected on their shared roles, making other avenues of collaboration available. When the affective domains of learning to teach …

Gendered Pronouns In The Classroom (August 24, 2015)

Center for Faculty Enrichment

Gendered Pronouns in the Classroom- Monday 8/24 4-5pm in Gävle Room 1

Last spring, the college community asserted that it will be inclusive of people of all genders. Since this affirmation, members of the campus community have requested professional development about the basic ideas in this discussion ("What is the difference between sex and gender?") as well as techniques for being inclusive ("How can I avoid misgendering a student or respond when others do?"). In this session, we will share foundational vocabulary, develop strategies for inclusion around gendered pronouns, and hold a Q&A with a couple of students about …

Academic-Community Partnerships Effectiveness Evaluated Beyond The Ivory Walls, Rosemary M. Caron, Jessica Ulrich-Schad, Catherine C. Lafferty

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) has furthered our understanding of the working principles required for academic-community partnerships to address persistent public health problems. However, little is known about how effective these partnerships have been in eliminating or reducing community-based public health issues. To contribute to the literature in this area, the authors conducted a survey of U.S. schools and programs in public health and community groups working with these academic partners to: (1) identify the most common local public health issues addressed; (2) examine the characteristics of the partnership and the actual or perceived benefits and challenges for each partner; (3) …
