Inference Of Cultural Transmission Modes Based On Incomplete Information, Bryan Wilder, Anne Kandler
Inference Of Cultural Transmission Modes Based On Incomplete Information, Bryan Wilder, Anne Kandler
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
In this paper we explore the theoretical limits of the inference of cultural transmission modes based on sparse population-level data. We approach this problem by investigating whether different transmission modes produce different temporal dynamics of cultural change. In particular we explore whether the distributions of the average time a variant stays the most common variant in the population, denoted by tmax, conditioned on the considered transmission modes are sufficiently different to allow for inference of underlying transmission modes. We assume time series data detailing the frequencies of different variants of a cultural trait in a population at different …

Cultural Incubators And Spread Of Innovation, Enrico R. Crema, Mark W. Lake
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Several forms of social learning rely on the direct or indirect evaluation of the fitness of cultural traits. Here we argue, via a simple agent-based model, that payoff uncertainty, that is the correlation between a trait and the signal used to evaluate its fitness, plays a pivotal role in the spread of beneficial innovation. More specifically, we examine how this correlation affects the evolutionary dynamics of different forms of social learning and how each can generate divergent historical trajectories depending on the size of the sample pool. In particular, we demonstrate that social learning by copying the best model is …

The Effects Of Social Media: Is It Hurting College Students?, Megan Landry
The Effects Of Social Media: Is It Hurting College Students?, Megan Landry
Perspectives
This study evaluates the relationship between how frequently college students’ access social media sites in class, and their GPA. Our class sent out an electronic survey and had 264 respondents, including men, women and transgender individuals. The results of the survey demonstrated that students who accessed social media sites during class often had lower grade point averages than students who never visited social media sites in class. The response rate was adequate, but future studies require an even larger sample in order for the results to be applicable to the general university population.
The Effects Of Alcohol Use On Academic Performance Among College Students, Jill Coyman
The Effects Of Alcohol Use On Academic Performance Among College Students, Jill Coyman
Perspectives
This study examines college students’ alcohol use and how it affects their academic performance, specifically looking at grade point average (GPA). An online survey was given out to male and female students at the University of New Hampshire. Survey questions focused on how much a particular student drank on average, and then asked for a cumulative GPA. The results of the survey show no direct correlation between the independent variable of alcohol use and the dependent variable of academic performance. Further research, including a larger and more representative sample, would improve the findings.

Race And Gender Consciousness Of College Students In Relation To Physical Ability, Samantha M. Howard
Perspectives
This study examines college students’ beliefs about how race and gender affect physical ability. There were a total of 184 respondents from the University of New Hampshire. Students answered questions through the online survey program Qualtrics. The results of this study show that that roughly the same percentage of males and females agree that women can reach the same level of physical ability. It also revealed that about a third of respondents agreed that African Americans have a natural physical ability.
The Impact Of Marital Discord On College Students In Relation To Future Emotional Wellbeing And Academic Achievements, Kerri Schulz
The Impact Of Marital Discord On College Students In Relation To Future Emotional Wellbeing And Academic Achievements, Kerri Schulz
Perspectives
Several studies have been published discussing the repercussions of marital discord relative to the future wellbeing of children. However, few studies have specifically addressed the potential effect that marital discord could have on the emotional wellbeing and academic achievements of children into their adult lives. This study uses data collected from a sample of undergraduate students (ages 18-22) attending the University of New Hampshire. This study failed to identify a correlation between marital discord and the future wellbeing of children, emotionally and academically, within the sample of undergraduate students. Further research including a larger and more representative sample size has …
Problems Prisoners Face In The Reentry Industry, Jessica Plant
Problems Prisoners Face In The Reentry Industry, Jessica Plant
Perspectives
Prison sentences vary depending on the crime committed. When sentences come to an end, prisoners return to society. Society does not just accept these prisoners back into everyday life with open arms. This paper explores the challenges incarcerated individuals experience when they reenter society after incarceration? The discussion focuses on the different challenges that these individuals face in their battle of entering back into society and being accepted by individuals in the communities they return to. Some key elements will focus on how reentry affects work, housing, rehabilitation and relationships.

Producing Goods, Shaping People: The Materiality Of Crafting, Julia A. Hendon
Producing Goods, Shaping People: The Materiality Of Crafting, Julia A. Hendon
Anthropology Faculty Publications
The study of craft production has a long and venerable history in archaeological research on ancient societies. In this chapter, I consider the crafting of useful and desired things from a materiality perspective by looking at the interactions between the craftpersons, the materials with which they work, and the ways that their end products are valued in society. I use two examples: working with fibers by the Maya of Mesoamerica and with metals by the Moche of Andean South America. These are two very different kinds of materials whose characteristics affect how one interacts with them. Crafting was a part …

The Impact Of College Campus Shooting Incidents: An Exploration Of Student Perceptions, Gary Scott Horton
The Impact Of College Campus Shooting Incidents: An Exploration Of Student Perceptions, Gary Scott Horton
Dissertations
Knowing the perceptions of college students regarding their safety on campus from an active school shooter can be valuable when campus police and security, college safety boards, and other members of the college community are designing policies and emergency plans to protect the college. However, few studies have been conducted to examine perceptions of students regarding fear of a school shooter on a university campus. To address this gap in the literature, this particular study was conducted to specifically inspect the perceptions of students regarding fear of a school shooter on a university campus in Missouri. This study resulted in …

Negative Identity, Nancy Leong
Negative Identity, Nancy Leong
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines the social and legal status of “negative identity”—identity marked by indifference or antipathy to something that much of society considers fundamental. As examples of negative identity, the Article considers those who identify as atheist, asexual, single, or childfree.
The Article begins by giving content to negative identity. Atheist, asexual, single, and childfree identity consists of more than merely the respective lack of religion, sexual attraction, partnership, or children. Rather, these negative identities are meaningful to group members, add value to society, and thus deserve legitimacy and respect. Unfortunately, respect is not always forthcoming: negative identity group members …

Genocide: Perspectives From The Social Sciences, Charles Anderton
Economics Department Working Papers
This article surveys risk factors for genocide and genocide prevention from the perspectives of four social science disciplines: sociology, social psychology, political science, and economics. Each discipline brings a valuable set of concepts and tools to bear in genocide research. Moreover, fruitful multi- and inter-disciplinary collaboration across the four disciplines (and other fields) is shedding new insights into why genocide has have been such a recurring tragedy in human affairs and how such atrocities can be prevented.
Assessing Preparation Of Mainstream Composition Teachers Working With Multilingual Writers, Elena Shvidko
Assessing Preparation Of Mainstream Composition Teachers Working With Multilingual Writers, Elena Shvidko
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Research on multilingual writers in first-year composition classes in U. S. universities seems to overlook the issue of professional preparation of mainstream composition instructors who work with multilingual writers. Composition courses are commonly taught by teachers with no formal training in L2 writing pedagogy. Therefore, a better understanding of their professional preparation and needs will help composition programs develop adequate training and prepare instructors who are able to address linguistic and cultural needs of multilingual writers. In this study, a perception survey was completed by 34 instructors of mainstream first-year composition at a large research U.S. university. The participants had …

Climate And Energy: Opinions Of Nonmetropolitan Nebraskans 2015 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Tonya Haigh
Nebraska Rural Poll
Many rural Nebraskans are concerned about more severe droughts or longer dry periods in their area, insect-borne diseases like West Nile Virus, and more extreme summer temperatures in their area. Fewer rural Nebraskans are concerned about the availability of water for their community or home or more frequent extreme rains or floods. Residents of the North Central region are more likely than residents of other regions of the state to be concerned about more severe droughts or longer dry periods in their area.
Few rural Nebraskans reported their household experiencing health problems during the drought of 2012. However, many persons …

Perspectives On Community Life In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: 2015 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy
Nebraska Rural Poll
By many different measures, rural Nebraskans are positive about their community. Many rural Nebraskans rate their community as friendly, trusting, and supportive. Most rural Nebraskans also say it would be difficult to leave their community. In addition, most rural Nebraskans disagree that their community is powerless to control its future.
However, the proportion of rural Nebraskans satisfied with many social services and entertainment services has decreased across all nineteen years of the study. Declines in satisfaction levels across all 19 years are seen with nursing home care, medical care services, senior centers, mental health services, entertainment, retail shopping and restaurants. …

Shattered Health For Women: How Gender Roles Affect Health Socio-Economic Status Nexus Over Life Cycle?, Burcu Duzgun Oncel
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
The main objective of this paper is to assess the relationship between health and socio-economic status (SES) across ages by including gender roles for men and women. Although life expectancy of women is greater than men, women's average subjective health measure is worse and morbidity rates are higher. Gender roles in society would be one of the causes of this distinction. Gender roles are proxied by time spent in household work, childcare, active & passive leisure and employment. Mean comparison tests show that women spend more time in household work and childcare and less time in employment and leisure. By …
