"Googling" Your Way To Justice: How Judge Posner Was (Almost) Correct In His Use Of Internet Research In Rowe V. Gibson, M. Cristina Martin
Seventh Circuit Review
The Internet is a temptation which many courts have been unable to resist. Over the past twenty years, judges at trial and appellate levels have increasingly used Internet research in crafting their judicial opinions. Judge Richard Posner of the Seventh Circuit is a huge proponent of this proposition, and in August 2015, he authored an opinion which took this independent Internet research to a new level. In Rowe v. Gibson, Judge Posner's opinion reversed summary judgment for a pro se litigant partly based on independent Internet research performed by the court. His justification for using this Internet research was …

Republicanism At Work: Strategies For Supporting Resistance To Domination In The Workplace, David Watkins
Republicanism At Work: Strategies For Supporting Resistance To Domination In The Workplace, David Watkins
Political Science Faculty Publications
Work, as organized in contemporary workplaces and situated in social and political structures, poses a threat to freedom that has been underappreciated in political theory, especially liberal political theory. The recent revival of republicanism offers an intriguing alternative: Can republicanism do any better, with respect to work and freedom?
An examination of the workplace through a republican lens does a better job of helping us make sense of the way work threatens freedom — by exposing us to the threat of domination — and it can generate at least three plausible proposals that might render resistance to domination in the …

Border Security: A Comprehensive Review Of The United States’ Approach To Southwest Border Policy, Nicholas M. Pacheco
Border Security: A Comprehensive Review Of The United States’ Approach To Southwest Border Policy, Nicholas M. Pacheco
Perspectives
This paper addresses the effect that the presence of a physical border wall on the southern United States-Mexico border has on deterring unauthorized immigration, illegal drug-trafficking, and countering narco-terrorism. While current techniques and legislation have intended to secure major crossing locations, they have resulted in a redistribution of border route traffic putting more immigrants in fatal danger and increasing demand for coyotes, or human trafficking guides. Not only have the government and media created a public perception of fear in its efforts to protect the homeland through national security, but there have also been negative effects on people on both …
Motherhood In The Home Or Achievement In Career Field, Yongjio Hu
Motherhood In The Home Or Achievement In Career Field, Yongjio Hu
Perspectives
As society has developed, women’s social levels have improved compared to the past. In the past, if women got married and had kids, they often took domestic positions, taking care of the family. Nowadays, women have more freedom to decide about whether to stay at home or work outside. However, external factors can also affect women’s decisions. Some examples are social policy, family structure, financial situation, and education level. All of these contribute to the final decision about whether to stay at home or work outside the home. This literature review focuses on how and why those factors affect women’s …

Patterns Of Marital Relationship Change Across The Transition From One Child To Two, Brenda L. Volling, Wonjung Oh, Richard Gonzalez, Patty X. Kuo, Tianyi Yu
Patterns Of Marital Relationship Change Across The Transition From One Child To Two, Brenda L. Volling, Wonjung Oh, Richard Gonzalez, Patty X. Kuo, Tianyi Yu
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Patterns of marital change after the birth of a second child were explored in a sample of 229 married couples, starting in pregnancy, and at 1, 4, 8 and 12 months postpartum. Five trajectory patterns that reflected sudden, persistent decline (i.e., crisis), sudden, short-term decline (i.e., adjustment and adaptation), sudden, short-term gain (i.e., honeymoon effect), linear change, and no change were examined with dyadic, longitudinal data for husbands and wives. Six distinct latent classes emerged using growth mixture modeling: (a) wife decreasing positivity-husband honeymoon (44%), (b) wife increasing conflict-husband adjustment and adaptation (34.5%), (c) wife honeymoon-discrepant spouse positivity (7.4%), (d) …
An Exploratory Study Of The Role An Equine- Assisted Learning Programme Plays In Diverting Young People From Criminal Pathways, Francisca O'Kelly
An Exploratory Study Of The Role An Equine- Assisted Learning Programme Plays In Diverting Young People From Criminal Pathways, Francisca O'Kelly
Dissertations
Interest in the potential of equine-assisted therapy and learning, where horses are incorporated in therapeutic, rehabilitative and educational interventions to ameliorate emotional, behavioural and social issues, has increased in the past half century. More recently, equine-assisted therapy and learning has been utilised in social work and penal contexts, such as in the rehabilitation and support of at-risk youth and young prisoners. However, there is a dearth of empirical research and published evaluative studies examining the effectiveness of these emerging programmes. The purpose of this study is to explore the role that a Dublin-based equine-assisted learning programme plays in diverting young …
Temporary Assistance For Needy Families, James P. Ziliak
Temporary Assistance For Needy Families, James P. Ziliak
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
The provision of public assistance to families with children in America faced a watershed moment with the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA). PRWORA replaced the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program, which was an entitlement funded via a federal-state matching grant, with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), which is no longer an entitlement and is financed with a fixed federal block-grant to the states. The impetus for reform had been building for at least the two decades prior to passage, but took on greater currency with the dramatic growth …
