Agriculture Of The Middle Participation In State Branding Campaigns: The Case Of Kentucky, Alicia M. Hullinger, Keiko Tanaka Oct 2015

Agriculture Of The Middle Participation In State Branding Campaigns: The Case Of Kentucky, Alicia M. Hullinger, Keiko Tanaka

Community & Leadership Development Faculty Publications

In the past decade, statewide agricultural branding campaigns have blossomed. Examining the case of the Kentucky Proud™ (KyP) program, this paper investigates the potential benefit of a state-level marketing strategy for the declining class of midsize farms, referred to as Agriculture of the Middle (AOTM). First, we discuss why AOTM farms are important to maintaining a viable agriculture structure. Second, we introduce the context of state branding and explain how KyP developed as part of the transition from highly tobacco-dependent agriculture. Using recent agricultural census data and a survey of KyP members, we compare the key characteristics between three sets …

Integrating Gardening As A Tool To Teach The Concept Of Sustainability To Elementary School Students, Hannah Cobb, Madisen Hasenauer Oct 2015

Integrating Gardening As A Tool To Teach The Concept Of Sustainability To Elementary School Students, Hannah Cobb, Madisen Hasenauer

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s society. Society as a whole benefits from having an environmentally conscious citizen who can make an informed impact on social issues involving natural resources. As future educators, it is our responsibility to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to become an active part of repairing our planet. Research suggests that school gardens can be a powerful tool in promoting outdoor education, encouraging positive peer relationships, and building strong communities, while teaching sustainability concepts. I propose teachers who receive school support, collaborate with committed volunteers, and acquire access to the …

Acquiring English As A Second Language For Mexican American Students, Gabriela Rosas Oct 2015

Acquiring English As A Second Language For Mexican American Students, Gabriela Rosas

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Acquiring English as a second language takes time, dedication and guidance from family, peers and most importantly from teachers. Many Mexican American students become effective bilinguals after they acquire English, while others slowly lose their native language. Through use of literature review, surveys and interviews to Mexican American college students and elementary teachers, this capstone examines how Mexican American students acquire English both at home and at school and find ways to improve their classroom learning experiences. Research reveals that the students’ language spoken at home determines whether they could be placed in a bilingual or English-only classroom. In addition, …

Life-Course Criminology And Desistance From Crime: What Consists Of A Good Marriage And Are The Effects Gender Specific?, Shawn P. Hunter

Bakerman Student Research Awards

Criminology is the science of studying crime on individual and societal levels. The area of life-course criminology seeks to understand how an individual begins in crime, persists, and eventually desists, and how desistance is achieved throughout the entire course of a person's life. Desistance may be accomplished through a number of ways within the confines of a marriage, from the cultivation of a strong marriage environment with strong attachments and commitments between spouses, to marriage simply functioning as the mechanism to replace one‟s previous deviant friends. While there is a large body of knowledge explaining how desistance is achieve through …

Podia And Pens: Dismantling The Two-Track System For Legal Research And Writing Faculty, Kristen K. Tiscione, Amy Vorenberg

Law Faculty Scholarship

At the 2015 AALS Annual Meeting, a panel was convened under this title to discuss whether separate tracks and lower status for legal research and writing (“LRW”) faculty make sense given the current demand for legal educators to better train students for practice. The participants included law professors, an associate dean, and a federal judge.2 Each panelist was asked to respond to questions about the “two-track” system—a shorthand phrase for the two tracks of employment at many law schools whereby full-time LRW faculty are treated differently than tenured and tenure-track faculty. The panelists represented differing views on the topic. This …

Learning From “Dirty Jobs:” Reflection On Work In The Classroom, Nicola Blake Oct 2015

Learning From “Dirty Jobs:” Reflection On Work In The Classroom, Nicola Blake

Publications and Research

This article will examine how the work environment presented through popular culture can enrich and extend ideas of work in a community college curriculum. The article presents the context and pedagogy of utilizing notions of “dirty jobs” in the classroom and highlights the discoveries made about theories of work in the process. Students documented these discoveries using three writing assignments. These scaffolded assignments created individual ethnographic responses to the key question: “What is Work”? By using meta-cognitive teaching practices and popular culture, students were able to use the guided writing activities to explore their individual notions of work, career, and …

Chinese Internet Literature: Preserving Born-Digital Literary Content And Fighting Web Piracy, C. David Hickey Oct 2015

Chinese Internet Literature: Preserving Born-Digital Literary Content And Fighting Web Piracy, C. David Hickey

Journal of East Asian Libraries

This paper undertakes to define Chinese internet literature (CIL) and discuss the unique circumstances that make the subject of CIL content preservation so problematic. Copyright infringement and text corruption, in which the text is changed or adapted without author’s permission, are major problems in China. Text corruption mostly results from censorship or web piracy. A recently-developed type of anti-piracy scheme called “literary works fingerprinting” can protect the content of the works themselves, guarding them against plagiarism. If as many of the original CIL documents as possible are consistently archived and digitally fingerprinted, then the born-digital works that remain online will …

Revisiting An Integrated Health Informatics And Technology Curriculum Model, Bernard T. Han, Tracy L. Johnson, Kenneth D. Bobo Oct 2015

Revisiting An Integrated Health Informatics And Technology Curriculum Model, Bernard T. Han, Tracy L. Johnson, Kenneth D. Bobo

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The shortage of health information technology workforce is quite significant in the health industry. The traditional education approach may not be effective enough to train college students to be an HIT workforce that requires both academic knowledge and extensive hands-on experiences in both healthcare and information technology. This paper presents an Integrated Health Informatics and Technology Curriculum Model to collapse the campus boundaries between regional Intermediate School Districts, Community Colleges, and a Four-Year health informatics and information management program to support expedited education with sufficient hands-on experiences in health informatics and technology. This model has been pilot tested by the …

Nutrition And Education In An Urbanizing Nation, Molly Pritz Oct 2015

Nutrition And Education In An Urbanizing Nation, Molly Pritz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Child malnutrition is a growing public health issue in Nepal, particularly in urban areas. Not eating enough, or not eating enough of healthy foods, can have life-long implications on development and cognitive ability. Because of its relevance to development within the country, many donor organizations and non-governmental organizations are working to promote child nutrition education programs. The purpose of this research is to investigate the implementation and structure of urban child nutrition educational programs involving treatment and prevention in Kathmandu, Nepal. Through qualitative interviews and field observations with three primary organizations, this research analyzes the patterns and disconnects between various …

Success And The Other[Ed] Woman: Examining The Persistence Of Female Students From Saudi Arabia, Dawn M. Winters Oct 2015

Success And The Other[Ed] Woman: Examining The Persistence Of Female Students From Saudi Arabia, Dawn M. Winters

Dissertations

With the influx of international students on American campuses, it is imperative that universities seek solutions to unique challenges surrounding their retention. More specifically, because women from Saudi Arabia are accustomed to highly-structured gendered practices in their home country that diametrically oppose those in the United States, they represent a sub-group within a sub-group of the often-generalized international students. Relatively few studies have been conducted regarding the academic persistence of specific groups of international students. The goal of this narrative analysis was to examine the salutogenic aspects of the persistence of Saudi women using Vincent Tinto’s (1997) revised model of …
