Self-Reflexivity As An Ethical Instrument To Give Full Play To Our Explicit And Implicit Subjectivity As Qualitative Researchers, Lorena Cruz
The Qualitative Report
Being a qualitative researcher involves, mainly, assuming the subjective dimension of the research process. This article reflects the process through which I am going through as a junior qualitative researcher within the educative field. If we are immersed in social or humanistic knowledge construction as researchers, we are part of a complex process of relations, we influence and we are influenced, as well. It is an ethical assumption which implies taking responsibility. In this article, I try to reveal how I dealt with my explicit and implicit subjectivity, developing self-reflexivity strategies that allowed me to expand the understanding of the …

An Exploration Of The Validity Of Inferences Made From The Interpersonal And Social Empathy Index (Isei), Kateeka Harris, Celia M. Wilson
An Exploration Of The Validity Of Inferences Made From The Interpersonal And Social Empathy Index (Isei), Kateeka Harris, Celia M. Wilson
Administrative Issues Journal
Social empathy is the ability to understand other people by perceiving or experiencing their life situations, thus providing an opportunity to gain insight into social inequalities. Institutions of higher education have unique opportunities to engage students in socially just educational conversations that challenge negative social biases of others who are not like them. The current study investigated the validity of the inferences made from the Interpersonal and Social Empathy Index (ISEI), a common tool used to explore levels of empathy among college students. A comparison was then made between the original constructs described by the instrument developers (Segal et. al., …

Are Faith-Based, Long-Term Care Nonprofit Organizations More Effective? A Survey Study Of Nursing Homes In Virginia, Bulent Ucar, Zubeyir Nisanci
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
The role of religion in effectiveness of organizations has been part of serious debates among policy makers, practitioners and scholars after President George W. Bush's creation of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in 2001.
The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether being a faith affiliated nursing home influences performance. The secondary purpose is, regardless of ownership type - religiously affiliated or secular - to investigate if more religiously involved nursing homes perform better than their less religiously involved counterparts. Performance is measured based on criterion put in place by the Center for Medicare …
Residential Mobility During Adolescence: Even "Upward" Moves Predict High School Dropout, Molly W. Metzger, Patrick J. Fowler, Bennett Kelberman
Residential Mobility During Adolescence: Even "Upward" Moves Predict High School Dropout, Molly W. Metzger, Patrick J. Fowler, Bennett Kelberman
Center for Social Development Research
Racial and economic segregation have long endured as systemic challenges in U.S. metropolitan areas. To combat the inequalities of segregation, two broad policy approaches have emerged: (1) preservation stresses investment in low-income neighborhoods, and (2) mobility stresses moving households in low-income areas to more affluent areas. Our recent study reveals some possible unintended consequences of the latter approach, particularly for adolescents. We find that moving during adolescence is associated with decreased odds of graduating from high school, even when moving to significantly higher income neighborhoods.

College Students Experiencing Homelessness: The Consequence Of Failed Macro Policies, Brialle D. Ringer
College Students Experiencing Homelessness: The Consequence Of Failed Macro Policies, Brialle D. Ringer
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Homelessness among college students is a growing trend, yet the problem is difficult to document due to the stigma associated with the circumstance. Flaws in policies related to jobs and wages, affordable housing, and affordable education interact to increase the risks faced by economically vulnerable students who enter college without secure housing, or who lose it during the course of their studies. A concerted institutional response is needed to mitigate both the risks and the consequences of homelessness, and to reduce the numbers of U.S. college students whose educational attainment is compromised by housing insecurity.

“Dominicana De Pura Sepa”: A Comparison Of Dominican Women Across Cultures, Rosaly Maldonado Rosado
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Latinos are one of the prevalent immigrant populations in the United States, and the number of immigrants from the Dominican Republic grows every year. Dominican women are faced with the process of acculturation, and as a result their traditional values and beliefs can be both challenged and changed. The purpose of this research is to compare Dominican women who reside in the United States (U.S.) to Dominican women who reside in the Dominican Republic. We will examine their relationships with men, with a focus on their (1) sexual practices, (2) independence, and (3) sexual health. We anticipate finding marked differences …
Queering Asexuality: Asexual-Inclusion In Queer Spaces, Dominique A. Canning
Queering Asexuality: Asexual-Inclusion In Queer Spaces, Dominique A. Canning
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Discussions about emerging sexual identities are prevalent in today’s society. As our recognition of the diversity of sexual identities grows, so does our need to define these identities and to better understand how they represent the human experience. One such identity is asexuality, which is defined by the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) as a “person who experiences no sexual attraction” (“Overview” n.d.). In this research, I will analyze the debate over whether asexual individuals should be considered “queer.” This analysis will examine previous research that focuses on identity, discourse, and boundaries between identities. The goal of this research …

You Can't Just Pick One Race And You Shouldn't Have To: Analyzing Biracial Protagonists In Young Adult Fiction, Tiffany N. Browne
McNair Scholars Research Journal
In recent years, Children’s Literature has seen a notable increase of texts involving racial diversity. One area that does not garner as much attention is Young Adult fiction with biracial protagonists. With the growing number of families in the United States identifying as biracial or multi-racial, it is important to examine the representations of biracial characters offered to readers. Poston has noted that biracial adolescents often experience crisis and alienation, as they are forced to choose an identity that does not fully encompass their complex racial background (Nuttgens 2010). Sarah Jamila Stevenson’s The Latte Rebellion (2011), Joan Steinau Lester’s Black, …
