Interviews were conducted with four administrators and three EL teachers from a rural Indiana school corporation (i.e., school district) with one of the state’s largest EL populations. In addition, four years of student test scores from the corporation were analyzed. Findings indicate that in …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

With the growing number of Amish in the United States today, it is important for social workers and mental health practitioners serving this population to do so in a way that is sensitive to their culture. This study attempts to explore specific culturally sensitive behaviors which social workers and mental health practitioners can utilize in striving to meet these needs. The researcher compiled a …

Seeing A Whole Life: Genre And Identity In Occupational Therapy, Stefanie Johnson Jan 2015

Seeing A Whole Life: Genre And Identity In Occupational Therapy, Stefanie Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A significant body of writing and rhetoric research focuses on the literate practices that reflect or construct the professional self, particularly in disciplines that rely heavily on the use of forms to categorize or identify customers, clients, or patients. Many of these studies examine the influence of discipline-specific genres on the creation of a professional self for healthcare practitioners. Occupational therapy, a nearly 100-year-old yet little understood profession, is significantly different from many other healthcare disciplines, in part, because the genres used by occupational therapists reflect the profession's careful attention to the whole life of a patient. These genres are …

by

RONDRELL TAYVAN TAYLOR

August 2015

Advisor: Dr. R. Khari Brown

Major: Sociology (Medical)

Trust is the foundation of the doctor-patient relationship. It promotes healing and medical efficacy. Patient trust in physicians exists when doctors act in their patients’ best interests. Moreover, trust literature demonstrates that historically (and contemporarily), African Americans are less likely than Whites to trust clinicians and the medical community due to the history of discrimination, clinical racism, unethical medical practices, implicit or unconscious racial biases, and exploitation by the health care …

Judicial Conflict Resolution (Jcr): A New Jurisprudence For An Emerging Judicial Practice, Michal Alberstein Jan 2015

Judicial Conflict Resolution (Jcr): A New Jurisprudence For An Emerging Judicial Practice, Michal Alberstein

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

In the past few decades, the role of judges has changed dramatically, yet its nature has remained largely unexplored. To date, most cases settle or reach plea-bargaining, and the greater part of judges' time is spent on managing cases and encouraging parties to reach consensual solutions. Adjudication based on formal rules is a rare phenomenon which judges mostly avoid. This Article argues that the various Conflict Resolution methods, which are used outside the courtroom, as alternatives to adjudication, could have a strong and positive influence, both theoretical and practical, on judicial activities inside the courts. Theoretically, the Article develops a …

Examining Therapists' Perceptions Of Barriers To Treatment With Youth And Their Families : A Mixed Methods Study, Gimel Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

The present study identified and quantified five main barriers to treatment categories, deducted first from the qualitative dataset, then consolidated with the results of the quantitative dataset. Clinicians (N=36) that worked with youth and their families participated. The main findings suggested five parent themes (practical obstacles, poor alliance with the therapist, therapist's perceptions, socioemotional, and cultural) and seven concept groups (transportation, financial, logistical, attendance, therapeutic relationship, lack of communication, and lack of engagement). Implications provide strategies to ratify some of these barriers, such as gathering data on youth clients and their families. For the purposes of this study, the terms …

Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate if the effects of high parent-child agreement on youth self-esteem and self-efficacy significantly correlated with high youth academic achievement on classroom achievement scores. Data from Dr. Judy Ho's The STAGES Project in student's entering the 6th grade was utilized in …

Processes And Mechanisms Of Change In Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy: A Case Study Of One Couple With Distress Over Child Rearing, Jessica S. Schachter

Theses and Dissertations

Marital distress is common and can have a tremendous influence on an entire family. Spousal conflict related to children is known to have a particularly negative impact on both the parenting and marital relationship. A number of evidence-based therapies exist to support couples in need including integrative behavioral couple therapy (IBCT; Jacobson & Christensen, 1998), which focuses on emotional acceptance and behavior change as mechanisms that improve marital satisfaction. While IBCT is well documented as an effective treatment with lasting outcomes (Christensen, et al., 2004), how and why IBCT works remains less clear. The current study used qualitative methodology to …

Communal Reflections: The Jewish Historical Society Of Staten Island Oral History Project, Amy F. Stempler Jan 2015

Communal Reflections: The Jewish Historical Society Of Staten Island Oral History Project, Amy F. Stempler

Publications and Research

The history of Jewish communities in New York has often cast a shadow over the history of other communities throughout the United States. Staten Island, though part of America’s largest Jewish city, has not received the scholarly attention awarded to Manhattan and the other outer boroughs. By the end of the twentieth century, Staten Island had the fastest growing Jewish community in New York City. Jews constituted 9 percent of the borough’s population, a higher proportion of the population than the number of Jews in all states outside of New York. Little is known about the community, especially its early …

Student Characteristics Associated With Positive Attitudes Toward Interprofessional Education, Risa Liang Wong

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Attitudes of health professional students may determine the effectiveness of interprofessional education (IPE). We sought to identify student characteristics associated with more positive attitudes toward IPE by surveying a cohort of medical (M), nursing (N), and physician associate (PA) students first and third year using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) and Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS). We collected demographic and experiential information and performed one-way ANOVA, independent and paired t-tests, and multiple linear regression. 110 of 213 students (52%) completed the RIPLS and 106 (50%) completed the IEPS at both time points. Nursing students consistently had the highest …

American Indian Children And U.S. Policy, Angelique Eaglewoman (Wambdi A. Wastewin), Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota Oyate Of The Lake Traverse Reservation, G. William Rice, United Keetoowah Band Of Cherokee Indians In Oklahoma

Tribal Law Journal

This article presents the major impact of implemented U.S. Indian policies on the lives of American Indian children. First, the article discusses U.S. policies aimed to re-socializing American Indians through imposition of external language, culture, and beliefs through a system of government-mandated education. In the late 1700s through the 1800s, the U.S. government set a course for military control over American Indian peoples. Re-socialization as an assimilation policy forced profound lifestyle and culture changes. These policies were aimed directly at American Indian children through mandatory Indian residential boarding schools. After decades of resistance, many tribal communities achieved educational reform. Assimilation …

Conceptualization Of The Memorial Tattoo In Scholarly Literature, Nicole Brown Jan 2015

Conceptualization Of The Memorial Tattoo In Scholarly Literature, Nicole Brown

University Honors Theses

The intent of this study is to examine the "self-help tattoo," specifically the sub-genre of the self-help tattoo, known as the memorial tattoo in scholarly literature. Over the past few decades, tattoos became increasingly popular within the United States' middle- and upper-class communities. The widespread use and increasing acceptance of such body art in Western society have invited researchers in many scholarly fields to interpret the memorial tattoo's meaning. This study finds that the memorial tattoo is conceptualized differently across scholarly fields and there isn't an overarching theoretical framework that all scholars follow.

The Gay Rights movement of the United States (U.S.) has made progress in the past few years with the overturning of bans on openly gay service in the military and gay marriage nationwide. Traditionally many Religious Right Organizations in the U.S. have been opposed to Gay Rights. This research explores the responses of the Conservative Christian organization Focus on the Family (FOTF) to this increasing normalization of queer identity. By analysis of documents on their …
