Psychology Faculty Scholarship

The field of psychology and law, including forensic psychology, is an exciting concentration of research activity and student training and has grown rapidly, but to what extent have teaching and training efforts in the field been systematically catalogued and evaluated? We conducted a historical review and content analysis of the American and Canadian literature on the scholarship of teaching and training in the field. This review catalogs (a) information related to the development of training and teaching, (b) descriptions of programs and courses at various levels, and (c) articles on teaching resources or techniques in this field. We hope it …

An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Core Competencies In Pain Management For Prelicensure Education: Curriculum Application For Physical And Music Therapy, Schaun Seaburg Jan 2015

An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Core Competencies In Pain Management For Prelicensure Education: Curriculum Application For Physical And Music Therapy, Schaun Seaburg

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Core competencies in pain management were recently established for prelicensure health professional education and assessed for ways that they could be integrated into professional physical therapy practice. The competencies present the expected minimal capabilities for graduating health care students for the subject of pain management. The pain competencies include 4 domains: multidimensional nature of pain, pain assessment and measurement, management of pain, and context of pain. The proposed competencies are recommended for educational programs and could be implemented for other health professions. The purpose of this study is to assess the implementation of the pain competencies in physical therapy and …

Elizabeth Gaskell In Middlemarch: Timothy Cooper, The Judgement Of Solomon, And The Woman At The Window, Barbara Hardy Jan 2015

Elizabeth Gaskell In Middlemarch: Timothy Cooper, The Judgement Of Solomon, And The Woman At The Window, Barbara Hardy

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

In 'Silly Novels by Lady Novelists" Gaskell and Harriet Martineau were the only living novelists George Eliot praised, and very briefly. George Eliot and Gaskell never met but corresponded, admired each other's work, and in several books George Eliot unconsciously drew on details and characters from Gaskell novels.3 There are three important details in Middlemarch - which Gaskell never read because she died before its publication - deriving from Cousin Phillis, Wives and Daughters, and North and South.

Chapter 56 of Middlemarch is a meeting-point for history and the personal life. Caleb Garth's social confidence rings loud as he speaks …

The Culture Of Honors, Susan J. Koch Jan 2015

The Culture Of Honors, Susan J. Koch

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

As I began to consider the value of honors at the University of Illinois at Springfield, the first thought that came to mind was this sentence from Wendell Berry’s 1987 book, Home Economics: “The thing being made in a university is humanity.” Our honors program “makes humanity” in a unique way that adds value to the educational experience for the individual honors student at the same time that it adds value and benefit to the university and, by extension, to humanity beyond.

Understanding Malignant Self-Regard And Its Implications For Achievement, Carly D. Evich Jan 2015

Understanding Malignant Self-Regard And Its Implications For Achievement, Carly D. Evich

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The latest Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013a) includes a dimensional model of personality assessment, which has been widely suggested as a better way to understand personalities than the current categorical model. The dimensional model highlights impairment in personality functioning and pathological traits as the hallmark features of personality pathology. Malignant Self Regard (MSR; Huprich, 2014), an emerging personality construct, is an example of a personality aligned with this model, in that it is characterized by pathological features that negatively affect the way one views themselves and relates to others. Given …

Child Soldiers: An Innocence Lost, Colleen Kirby Jan 2015

Child Soldiers: An Innocence Lost, Colleen Kirby

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

There are over 300,000 children being exploited, used as slaves and in combat situations as child soldiers. These children are kidnapped, brainwashed and forced to commit atrocities that are so heinous, most adults cannot fathom witnessing these things themselves. While both female and male child soldiers exist, their roles can be extremely different. Even though we are aware that the experiences and gender roles are different, there is minimal research on the female child solider experience. This research explores the different gender roles and involvements for both male and female child soldiers. It also explores the lack of research regarding …

This mixed methods research study explores the current interface of religion and social work in clinical practice. A total of 91 National Association of Social Workers, Illinois Chapter members and 120 North American Association of Christians in Social Work members responded to clinical vignettes via an online survey. Subsequently, a small group of Christian social workers and a small group of Secular social workers convened for focus group discussion. This study found that the approaches of Christian social workers and secular social workers were not fundamentally different; however, there was some evidence of significant differences between the groups and their …

Self-Represented Litigants And Civil Case Dispositions In Missouri: An Impact Analysis, Anne Dannerbeck Janku, Joseph A. Vradenburg Jan 2015

Self-Represented Litigants And Civil Case Dispositions In Missouri: An Impact Analysis, Anne Dannerbeck Janku, Joseph A. Vradenburg

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Access to justice is an important issue for the Missouri judiciary as it is for many other states. The issue fostered several recent national initiatives,1 including a 2010 Department of Justice Access to Justice Initiative.2 Part of the agenda for that initiative involves identifying ways to ensure fair and just outcomes for all parties to a case. Some observers of the judicial system have expressed concern that self-represented litigants may not experience fair and just outcomes. As part of Missouri’s own access-to-justice initiatives, this study was undertaken to understand how self-representation impacts outcomes in civil cases.

About half the cases …

Developmental Stages Of New Graduate Student Instructional Consultants: Implications For Professional Growth, Mary C. Wright, Laura N. Schram, Kristen S. Gorman Jan 2015

Developmental Stages Of New Graduate Student Instructional Consultants: Implications For Professional Growth, Mary C. Wright, Laura N. Schram, Kristen S. Gorman

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Effective consulting is a key skill for educational developers. Although most educational developers are new to the field, there is limited research about how new practitioners develop consulting skills. The key research question this study explores is: How do new graduate teaching consultants develop as practitioners? This study empirically applies several “classic” models of consulting to better understand new consultants’ perceived development of expertise, preferred consulting approaches, and reflection about them. The findings are generally confirmatory of the ways that classic frameworks map onto the development of consultants. They also suggest greater attention to supporting new consultants beyond “getting started,” …

The Prevalence Rate Of Underage Drinking Among School-Age Adolescents Receiving Social Work Intervention In A Community Mental Health Research Health Setting, Karen Abonza Jan 2015

The Prevalence Rate Of Underage Drinking Among School-Age Adolescents Receiving Social Work Intervention In A Community Mental Health Research Health Setting, Karen Abonza

Social Work Theses - Archive

Adolescents participate in underage drinking across the United States, causing significant consequences to themselves, others, communities, and the state. Underage drinking is one of the nation's leading causes of deaths in American adolescents. The current study examines the prevalence rate of underage drinking among a clinical population. The hypothesis is that peers (peer groups and peer influence) may contribute to underage drinking greater than the impact of families encouraging alcohol. An epidemiological case record review of 100 participants from the years 2012 to 2014 was conducted at the University of Texas at Arlington's Center for Clinical Social Work (CCSW) using …

Associations Among African American Parent Education, Perceptions, Behaviors, And Child Weight Status: A Cross-Sectional Data Analysis, Tracey Marie Barnett Jan 2015

Associations Among African American Parent Education, Perceptions, Behaviors, And Child Weight Status: A Cross-Sectional Data Analysis, Tracey Marie Barnett

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Purpose: Obesity in children and adolescents is a worldwide epidemic that is anticipated to worsen over time (Budd & Volpe, 2006; Chatterjee, Blakely, & Barton, 2005; Hossain, Kawar, & El Nahas, 2007). Within the past 30 years, the prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States has more than doubled among children and quadrupled in adolescents (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2014). People often have inaccurate perceptions of their body size and weight status and this may play a key role in the prevalence of obesity especially for ethnic minorities (Gillard, Lackland, Mountfored, & Egan, 2007; Hendley, et al., 2011). …

Perceptions Of Professional And Financial Worth Among Master Of Social Work Students, Rebecca Allison Peeler Jan 2015

Perceptions Of Professional And Financial Worth Among Master Of Social Work Students, Rebecca Allison Peeler

Social Work Theses - Archive

The purpose of this study is to explore professional perceptions (intraprofessional, interprofessional, and societal) among UT Arlington (UTA) second-year and advanced-standing master of social work (MSW) students and investigate the connections of these perceptions to financial worth. Three focus groups were conducted with UTA MSW students (n=31) to explore this topic. The findings from this research suggest that the link between professional perceptions and financial worth is salient. Internal and external devaluation may contribute to a continued acceptance and expectation of low financial earnings. Implications for social work education policy and professional advocacy are addressed. This researcher hopes that the …

A Metatheoretical Analysis Of Social Support Theory In Application To Military Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Mikayla Lynn Jacob Jan 2015

A Metatheoretical Analysis Of Social Support Theory In Application To Military Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Mikayla Lynn Jacob

Social Work Theses - Archive

More organizations, researchers, and practitioners are now measuring social support with military Post Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD; however, many are measuring very different specific variables under the overarching title of social support. These differences have created complications when interpreting the data. A number of different outcomes have been noted in empirical research regarding the relationship between military PTSD and social support.. This is a secondary analysis of previously published research, similar to a research synthesis. George Ritzer's (1989) metatheoretical analysis method is used. Social exchange theory and social network theory are discussed as they relate to social support theory. Three …

The Social Determinants Of Immigrant Well-Being In The United States: A Gendered Perspective, Arati Maleku Jan 2015

The Social Determinants Of Immigrant Well-Being In The United States: A Gendered Perspective, Arati Maleku

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation examines the overlapping effects of structural vulnerabilities that arise from individual’s position in a society translated through gender, race, ethnicity, class, age, and marital status on the well-being of immigrants in the United States. Despite the increasing understanding of migration as a gendered process, research in this area is still limited to gender and/or women ignoring class, ethnicity, or race as relevant axes of structural disadvantage and differentiation. This empirical study addresses this lacuna in knowledge via two objectives: (1) advance a conceptual and methodological model of health and migration that integrates a gendered perspective drawing interconnections, interdependence, …

Predicting Condom Use Behavior In Sexually Active Adolescents: Application Of The Health Belief Model And Developmental Assets Framework, Holli M. Slater Jan 2015

Predicting Condom Use Behavior In Sexually Active Adolescents: Application Of The Health Belief Model And Developmental Assets Framework, Holli M. Slater

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

A significant amount of progress has been made over the past decade to reduce the impact of risky sexual behavior among adolescents; however, rates of unwanted pregnancy and contraction of sexually transmitted infections remain high. Finding ways to mitigate the consequences of risky sexual behavior continues to be a focus of many working with adolescents engaging in risky behavior. This study performed a secondary analysis of data collected during a 5-year evaluation of a teen pregnancy program targeting youth ages 17-19 who were at high risk for dropping out of high school. The goals of this study were two fold: …

Mixing Oil & Water: Why Child-Custody Evaluations Are Not Meshing With The Best Interest Of The Child, Bari L. Nathan Jan 2015

Mixing Oil & Water: Why Child-Custody Evaluations Are Not Meshing With The Best Interest Of The Child, Bari L. Nathan

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

The Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act provides the statutory requirements for marriage and dissolution of marriage in Illinois. Section 604(b) gives courts the discretion to appoint an evaluator in order to aid in the determination of child custody by evaluating the relevant parties and writing a report. If and when these 604(b) evaluators are appointed, there are virtually no guidelines that set forth what they may or may not do in the course of their evaluations. As a result of this lack of guidelines, 604(b) evaluators often employ clinical assessment instruments (i.e., psychological tests that assess clinical constructs …
