Exploring A School-University Model For Professional Development With Classroom Staff: Teaching Trauma-Informed Approaches, Elizabeth M. Anderson, Lisa V. Blitz, Monique Saastamoinen
Social Work Faculty Scholarship
Schools serving communities with high rates of poverty face the profound challenge of meeting the needs of students who are often exposed to significant family and environmental stressors and trauma. Classroom staff are vital members of schoolcommunities who often work closely with students with the highest needs, but they are typically not provided with professionaldevelopment opportunities to develop skills for social-emotional learning intervention. This study, conducted in three parts, describes (1) a needs assessment with classroom staff to determine their learning needs, (2) the development and implementation of a series ofprofessional development workshops that incorporated findings from the needs assessment, …

You've Got Mail: Student Preferences Of Instructor Communication In Online Courses In An Age Of Advancing Technologies., Ching-Wen Chang, Beth Hurst, Annice Mclean
College of Education
The purpose of this study was to determine students' current preferred ways to receive course communication from their online instructors. In a time when technology is changing daily, and a time when young people are often the most up-to-date with that new technology, students' preferences for how they receive online course communication is apt to change often too. In order to determine students' current preferences, a survey was administered two semesters to both graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in an at least online course at a university in the Midwest. Survey results indicated that 97% of the students preferred to …

Family Connections Research Capsules, Center For Improvement Of Child And Family Services
Child Welfare
Family Connections Oregon (FCO) was a three-year demonstration project funded by the Children’s Bureau in which a co-located coordinator provided a package of services - intensive family finding and engagement, family group conferencing, and follow-up - within the first 60 days of a child’s out-of-home placement. These practices are continuing in Oregon through a IV-E waiver demonstration project called Leveraging Intensive Family Engagement (LIFE).
The Research Capsules associated with this project are included in this record.

A Cross-Cultural Qualitative Study: The Differences In Attitudes And Opinions On Advance Care Planning Among African, Caucasian, And Latino Americans, Jennifer Sims
International ResearchScape Journal
The purpose of this study is to identify African American and Latino Americans’ beliefs and attitudes about advance care planning (ACP) and compare these with beliefs held by Caucasian Americans. The objectives are to identify if there are differences in opinions between racial groups and to provide relevant information for health and social service providers. African American and Latino American participants in this study indicated many factors that affect their hesitation to utilize ACP services: spiritual and religious beliefs; family caregiving; and lack of knowledge about ACP services. Implications for practice include providing easy-to-understand information about ACP to clients of …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Burnout is a chronic problem for individuals in the helping professions and is particularly pronounced in healthcare settings. Burnout is an extreme stress response characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization of patients, and a decreased sense of personal accomplishment. Factors unique to healthcare settings include high patient to staff ratios, evaluations of effectiveness based on patient outcomes, and the competing demands of policy makers, patients, and clinicians. Work engagement is a product of the positive psychology movement and developed out of the study of burnout. Work engagement is an affective-emotional state of work-related well-being and is characterized as being positive and …

Recursive Frame Analysis: A Qualitative Research Method For Mapping Change-Oriented Discourse, Hillary Keeney, Bradford Keeney, Ronald Chenail
Recursive Frame Analysis: A Qualitative Research Method For Mapping Change-Oriented Discourse, Hillary Keeney, Bradford Keeney, Ronald Chenail
The Qualitative Report Books
Recursive Frame Analysis (RFA) is a qualitative research method for mapping and analyzing change-oriented conversation. Cybernetician and therapist Bradford Keeney invented RFA over twenty years ago as a means of discerning and indicating the bare bones organization of real-time therapeutic performance. This book revisits some of Keeney’s original ideas while providing a more exhaustive theoretical foundation for RFA, a thorough exploration of its practical application as a research tool, and several detailed analyses of therapy sessions.
Rooted to Gregory Bateson’s notion of contextual frame and the way that a distinction can recursively operate on itself as formulated by G. Spencer-Brown’s …

Development And Validation Of A Social Cognitive Theory-Based Survey For Elementary Nutrition Education Program, Elisha Hall, Weiwen Chai, Wanda Koszewski, Julie A. Albrecht
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: The Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is a widely used model for developing elementary nutrition education programs; however, few instruments are available to assess the impact of such programs on the main constructs of the SCT. The purposes of this study were: 1) to develop and validate a SCT-based survey instrument that focuses on knowledge, behavior, and self-efficacy for fifth grade students; 2) to assess the relationships between knowledge, behavior, and self-efficacy; and 3) to assess knowledge, behavior, and self-efficacy for healthy eating among the fifth grade students.
Methods: A 40-item instrument was developed and validated using content validity …
Quality Of Life And Mental Health Outcomes In Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillator Treatment: Potential Effects Of Informational Media History And Treatment Knowledge, Christopher E. Knoepke
Quality Of Life And Mental Health Outcomes In Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillator Treatment: Potential Effects Of Informational Media History And Treatment Knowledge, Christopher E. Knoepke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Social workers in all care venues are increasingly responsible for clinical and case management services for people being treated with sophisticated medical interventions. Unfortunately, opportunities to aid in the promotion of quality of life (QOL), mental health, and informed consent are often not understood by social workers, other care providers, or patients. These missed opportunities may lead to attenuated effectiveness of medical interventions and negative impact on patients' QOL. One such technological treatment is the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a lifesaving therapy which carries risk to patients' QOL. Moreover, patients frequently do not accurately understand the benefits, limitations, and possible …

Impact Of A Person-Centered Care Model On Nursing Job Satisfaction, Tracy A. Thompson
Impact Of A Person-Centered Care Model On Nursing Job Satisfaction, Tracy A. Thompson
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Executive Summary Long-term care (LTC) facilities have historically created an institutionalized environment for their residents which have been shown to decrease quality of life and decrease nursing job satisfaction within those facilities (Koren, 2010). This paper outlines a single implementation study of a person-centered care model in a long-term care facility. The goal of this implementation was to not only change the practice from a medical model to a person-centered care model but to positively impact nursing job satisfaction. This implementation took place at a long-term care facility in The State of Oregon. This study included an educational intervention, as …

Children As A Reserve Labor Force, David F. Lancy
Children As A Reserve Labor Force, David F. Lancy
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Human life history is unique in the great length of the juvenile or immature period. The lengthened period is often attributed to the time required for youth to master the culture, particularly subsistence and survival skills. But an increasing number of studies show that children become skilled well before they gain complete independence and the status of adults. It seems, as they learn through play and participation in the domestic economy, children are acquiring a “reserve capacity” of skills and knowledge, which they may not fully employ for many years. The theory offered here to resolve this paradox poses that, …

Influence Of Personal And State Level Variables On Perception Of State Emergency Management Network Resilience In 47 States, Victoria Jennison
Influence Of Personal And State Level Variables On Perception Of State Emergency Management Network Resilience In 47 States, Victoria Jennison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Emergency management coordination in the United States has fallen victim to over a century of strategies to organize, reorganize, consolidate, or decentralize disaster preparedness, planning and response. Regardless of the agency in charge at the federal level, individual citizens have been responsible for their own well-being immediately after any disaster or emergency event for more than 100 years because it takes time to mobilize and deliver aid. The system most often charged with managing that mobilization during an emergency event that exceeds the response capacity of local public safety agencies is the state emergency management network. Many entities in a …
