Do Parents Meet Adolescents’ Monitoring Standards? Examination Of The Impact On Teen Risk Disclosure And Behaviors If They Don’T, Lesley Cottrell, Carrie Rishel, Cheista Lilly, Scott Cottrell, Aaron Metzger, Halima Ahmadi, Bo Wang, Xiaoming Li, Bonita Stanton

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In this study, we examined how adolescents compare monitoring efforts by their parents to those of a "good parent" standard and assessed the impact of these comparisons on adolescent self-disclosure and risk behavior and their perceptions of their parents' monitoring knowledge. Survey responses from 519 adolescents (12–17 years) at baseline of a larger, longitudinal study examining parental monitoring and adolescent risk were examined. Adolescents’ “good parent comparisons” differed greatly by monitoring areas (e.g., telephone use, health, money); however, between 5.5% and 25.8% of adolescents believed their parents needed to monitor their activities more than they currently were monitoring. Alternatively, between …

A Faith That Endures? An Exploration Of The Perceived Influence Of Parental Control And Responsiveness On The Spiritual Change Of College Students, Joshua P. Riedel Jan 2015

A Faith That Endures? An Exploration Of The Perceived Influence Of Parental Control And Responsiveness On The Spiritual Change Of College Students, Joshua P. Riedel

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Research showed parenting styles (authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive) significantly influence child and adolescent development. Other studies consistently highlighted the many changes in an individual’s spirituality during his or her time at college. However, little research exists examining the overlap of parenting styles during childhood and spiritual change during college, and the present study focused on this intersection. The present study examined the relationship between parental control and parental responsiveness—two key traits in the well-developed theory of parenting styles and spiritual change in college. The study analyzed data from the National Study of Youth and Religion to examine this relationship. The …

Mirror Gazing For Cultural Bereavement: A Mixed-Methods Study Into The Impact Of A Restricted Sensory Environment Meditation Process (Psychomanteum) On Culture Shock In Expatriates, Samuel W. Root Jan 2015

Mirror Gazing For Cultural Bereavement: A Mixed-Methods Study Into The Impact Of A Restricted Sensory Environment Meditation Process (Psychomanteum) On Culture Shock In Expatriates, Samuel W. Root

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Thirteen expatriates experienced an individual 2-3 hour psychomanteum process, including pre- and post-meditation interviews based on cultural bereavement theory, mirror gazing in a restricted sensory chamber, art work, and follow-up surveys. Repeated measures of negative affect were administered at pretest, posttest, and follow-up periods. Correlational analyses revealed significant reductions in total culture shock and mood disturbance at follow up. Extraversion, home country, and importance of religion/ spirituality were significant covariates in change on total culture shock scores at posttest. Qualitative analyses revealed four categories of effects: clarified emotional conflicts, letting go, shifted perspectives, and reviewed success factors. The psychomanteum process …

Relational Behavior Of Leaders: A Comparison By Vocational Context, G. Ronald Gilbert, Robert C. Myrtle, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Organizational researchers widely acknowledge that positive relational behavior is associated with leadership effectiveness. In this exploratory study, we seek to extend previous research examining contextual factors that influence leadership style based on the characteristics of person–vocation fit. Using information derived from a 360° assessment that included one’s top managers, peers, and subordinates (N = 934), we find that leaders working in settings that attract Holland’s Social (S) types demonstrate more positive relational behavior than those who work in Realistic (R) type work settings. Our research also indicates that the relationship between leadership style and perceived effectiveness varies based on …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of cost-effective diagnostic strategies to evaluate whether mass drug administration (MDA) programmes to control Schistosoma haematobium progress as anticipated. The purpose of this study is to provide a proof-of-principle for examination of pooled urine samples as a strategy for rapid assessment of presence and intensity of Schistosoma haematobium infections at the population level.

METHODS: A total of 640 urine samples were collected from 520 school-aged children (520 at baseline and 120 at follow-up) during a clinical trial that was designed to assess the efficacy of praziquantel against Schistosoma haematobium infections in Ethiopia. Individual and pooled …

Comprehensive coordinated specialty care programs for first-episode psychosis have been widely implemented in other countries but not in the United States.
