Identification Of Whole Mitochondrial Genomes From Venezuela And Implications On Regional Phylogenies In South America, Esther J. Lee, D. Andrew Merriwether

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Recent studies have expanded and refined the founding haplogroups of the Americas using whole mitochondrial (mtDNA) genome analysis. In addition to pan-American lineages, a number of studies have identified specific variants that show higher frequencies in restricted geographical areas. In order to further characterize Native American maternal lineages and specifically examine local patterns within South America, we analyzed twelve maternally unrelated Yekuana whole mtDNA genomes from one village (Sharamaña) that include the four major Native American haplogroups A2, B2, C1, and D1. Our study proposes a reconfiguration of one subhaplogroup A2 (A2aa) that is specific to South America and identifies …

What Patients Want: Relevant Health Information Technology For Diabetes Self-Management., Diane King

Reports

Health information technology has great potential to promote efficiency in patient care and increase patient-provider communication, and patient engagement in their treatment. This paper explored qualitatively what patients with type 2 diabetes want from electronic resources that are designed to support their diabetes self-management. Data were collected via interviews and focus groups from managed care patients who had completed participation in either a web-based (MyPath) or in-person group-based (¡Viva Bien!) longitudinal diabetes self-management study. Content analysis identified common themes that highlighted participant interest in virtual and electronic programs to support diabetes self-management goals, and their desired content and features. Eighteen …

Inter-Country Adoption Of Children Born In The United States, Madeline H. Engel, Norma K. Phillips, Frances A. Della Cava Mar 2015

Inter-Country Adoption Of Children Born In The United States, Madeline H. Engel, Norma K. Phillips, Frances A. Della Cava

Sociology Between the Gaps: Forgotten and Neglected Topics

Inter-country adoption of children from the United States has been going on for decades; however it had not been broadly recognized by adoption professionals. Prior to 2008, when the USA contracted with The Hague Convention on Inter-country Adoption, no protective legislation aimed at monitoring these adoptions existed, offering no protection from abuses that have been associated with inter-country adoption. Even after the policy change in 2008, the USA has had no requirements for reporting all inter-country adoptions. Historically, inter- country adoptions from the USA have involved children of racial minorities. This practice raises social justice issues and questions of protection …
