Robert and Yvonne Koob Fund for Student Community Engagement Recipients
As a student intern in the beginning my focus was to assist in the area of Group Travel and how to get more diverse groups into the museum, especially Veterans from the community and surrounding areas. As things started flowing together while working, I learned the basics of how the Grout Museum controls their group travel, and how they market themselves to certain populations and locations around the Midwest. Another big portion of group travel is how to get groups from the community to the museum, to which I focused on more so. Learning ways to entice community visitors and …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2015-04-01, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Deconstructing And Reconstructing Rights For Immigrant Children, Erin B. Corcoran
Deconstructing And Reconstructing Rights For Immigrant Children, Erin B. Corcoran
Law Faculty Scholarship
Children rights advocates and scholars alike continue to call for the development of innovative and alternative rights models, which specifically provide for an expansive conceptualization of children’s rights. Central to their calls for reform is a simultaneous recognition that children’s rights must embody agency – a child’s voice (a proxy for autonomy) – free from governmental interference, as well as the establishment of certain fundamental “needs” that place an affirmative obligation on the State to ensure the child has, and affirmatively provide, when necessary. Reimagining children’s rights also requires reforming our laws in such a way that reflects children as …
Differential Response: A Dangerous Experiment In Child Welfare, Elizabeth Bartholet
Differential Response: A Dangerous Experiment In Child Welfare, Elizabeth Bartholet
Florida State University Law Review
Differential Response represents the most important child welfare initiative of the day, with Differential Response programs rapidly expanding throughout the country. It is designed to radically change our child welfare system, diverting the great majority of Child Protective Services cases to an entirely voluntary system. This Article describes the serious risks Differential Response poses for children and the flawed research being used to promote it as “evidence based.” It puts the Differential Response movement in historical context as one of a series of extreme family preservation movements supported by a corrupt merger of advocacy with research. It argues for reform …
An Investigation To Compare Blood Pressure And Pulse Before And After Concentrative Meditation, Candice Welden
An Investigation To Compare Blood Pressure And Pulse Before And After Concentrative Meditation, Candice Welden
Posters
The purpose of this study was to understand if meditation over a short period of time, thirty days, can result in a significant reduction in stress. Does meditation decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels concerning undergradu-ate college students? The participants of this research consisted of (N=5) undergraduate college students. Blood pressures were taken on the first day of the study before and after meditation, and on the final day of the study before and after meditation. Participants recorded their heart rate each day over the 30 day study. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS14) was administered at the beginning …
The Historical Role Of Women In Higher Education, Patsy Parker
The Historical Role Of Women In Higher Education, Patsy Parker
Administrative Issues Journal
Historically, females, as compared to males, have represented a lower percentage of college professors and administrators in the United States. The tendency for males to outnumber females in the professoriate and college administration has existed since United States higher education institutions formed in the early 1800s and still persists today. Fluctuations in women’s participation rate have been influenced by the economy’s history and society’s expectations of females. Observation of the employment trends for females offers an interesting look at the evolving role of women in the United States workforce, in general, and in the university setting, in particular.

Assessment Of A Professional Development Program On Adult Learning Theory, Melinda Malik
Assessment Of A Professional Development Program On Adult Learning Theory, Melinda Malik
Higher Education Student Work
Librarians at colleges and universities invested in graduate education must understand and incorporate adult learning theories in their reference and instruction interactions with graduate students to more effectively support the students’ learning. After participating in a professional development program about adult learning theory, librarians in this study reported that, in many ways, they already employed teaching and learning strategies grounded in one or more adult learning theories. They also indicated gaining a greater awareness of student development, enabling them to more successfully tailor their interactions.

The Lives Of Young Adults Who Have Graduated From Residential Children's Mental Health Programs (Full Report), Gary Cameron, Karen Frensch
Partnerships for Children and Families Project
This report presents the results of a research process in which 59 young adults who had received residential mental health treatment in the past were sorted into descriptive profiles based on the information they shared about their lives and personal functioning with researchers. Five different groups of young adults emerged from this process and represent the clearest categorizations for understanding this particular sample of young adults from across Southern Ontario who received residential treatment.
Sorting young adults into distinct groups based on their functioning within key life domains (like education, employment, social connections, personal functioning) is useful to understanding the …

The Lives Of Young Adults Who Have Graduated From Residential Children's Mental Health Programs (Summary Report), Gary Cameron, Karen Frensch
Partnerships for Children and Families Project
What happens to children and youth after they leave residential mental health treatment? How do these youth navigate normative developmental transitions like finishing school, getting a job, and finding a place to live? What types of assistance might facilitate these transitions? Despite the critical importance of these questions for youth themselves, for the educational, justice, and mental health systems, and for the development of more appropriate transitions to community programming, surprisingly little is known about what happens to these children and youth over time.
This report presents the results of a research process in which 59 young adults who had …

Improving Access To Food Systems Among Communities Of Color: A Food Justice Issue, Alma M. O. Trinidad, Helen Camden, Anne Coleman
Center to Advance Racial Equity Publications and Reports
Food insecurity and access among communities of color is a major social and health issue. Limited studies rooted in Oregon exist to assist practitioners, policy makers, and scholars in understanding food insecurity and access among recent immigrants and refugees. Using a multiple qualitative methods approach, this study has three major aims: 1) to understand the food access issues, particularly barriers and opportunities, among refugees and immigrants; 2) to investigate the challenges and opportunities of immigrants and refugees in accessing systems that are culturally responsive to their needs and; and 3) to address the gaps of service delivery targeted for communities …
