An Education Saved My Life: Silver Wolf’S Path To Promise, David Patterson Silver Wolf (Adelv Unegv Waya) Apr 2015

An Education Saved My Life: Silver Wolf’S Path To Promise, David Patterson Silver Wolf (Adelv Unegv Waya)

Books and Monographs

In An Education Saved My Life, Professor David A. Patterson Silver Wolf (Adelv unegv Waya) narrates his path from a difficult early family life, his introduction to alcohol and drugs as an adolescent, and a directionless early adulthood overshadowed by chemical dependency, to a series of events and encounters that transformed his life. Dr. Patterson Silver Wolf attributes not only the substance abuse, but the many turns that led to it, to what he calls a “poor belief system.” As the title suggests, by contrast, he attributes much of the success he has experienced since then to his education, but …

The Patient Portal And Abnormal Test Results: An Exploratory Study Of Patient Experiences, Traber Giardina, Varsha Modi, Danielle Parrish, Hardeep Singh Apr 2015

The Patient Portal And Abnormal Test Results: An Exploratory Study Of Patient Experiences, Traber Giardina, Varsha Modi, Danielle Parrish, Hardeep Singh

Patient Experience Journal

Many health care institutions are implementing patient portals that allow patients to track and maintain their personal health information, mostly in response to the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act requirements. Test results review is an area of high interest to patients and provides an opportunity to foster their involvement in preventing abnormal test results from being overlooked, a common patient safety concern. However, little is known about how patients engage with portals to review abnormal results and which strategies could facilitate that interaction in order to ensure safe follow-up on abnormalities. The objective of this qualitative …

Usefulness Of A Patient Experience Study To Adjust Psychosocial Oncology And Spiritual Care Services According To Patients’ Needs, Lynda Belanger, Francois Rainville, Martin Coulombe, Annie Tremblay

Patient Experience Journal

Little is known about how cancer patients experience psychosocial and spiritual care services and about what services they feel should be offered in order to help them meet their actual needs. This study’s main goal was to examine how cancer patients experienced the psychosocial oncology and spiritual care (POSC) services they received, in order to adjust the service offer according to their expressed needs and expectancies. A qualitative design approach was used. The study was conducted in two phases: (1) Collection of the patients’ perspective and divulgation of the results to the clinical team and managers; and (2) assessment of …

The Children’S Hospital Of Philadelphia Family Partners Program: Promoting Child And Family-Centered Care In Pediatrics, Amy Kratchman, Ba, Darlene Barkman, Ma, Kathy Conaboy, Ba, Anna De La Motte, Msed, Rachel Biblow, Msw, Katherine Bevans, Phd

Patient Experience Journal

Involving Family Advisory Councils in decisions that impact pediatric healthcare demonstrates hospitals’ commitment to child- and family-centered care. Yet, reliance on advisors as the sole source of family input has several limitations: infrequent meetings impedes the council’s capacity to address emerging concerns in a timely manner; feedback obtained from a small number of highly-engaged family members may not represent the perspectives of “typical” patients and families; advisors provide feedback in a reactive manner and are generally not equitably involved in problem identification or the initial development of solutions. In recognition of the need to strengthen and advance family partnerships, the …

Perceived Barriers To Higher Education Among First-Generation And Non-First-Generation Latino Male High School Students, Roopa Parasuraman Dominguez

Open Access Dissertations

First-generation Latino male students face challenges related to enrollment in college. The purpose of this study was to present a comparison of the intent to pursue a bachelor’s degree between first-generation (FG) and non-first-generation Latino male high school students (NFG). Secondary data obtained from the National Center for Education Statistics High School Longitudinal Study first follow-up in 2012 was analyzed to determine whether there were differences between FG and NFG students in terms of their social and cultural capital: family perceptions of the importance of college, knowledge of financial aid, academic and social involvement, and academic preparation. Results from a …

Theories Of Victim Blame, Megan Crippen Apr 2015

Theories Of Victim Blame, Megan Crippen

Senior Honors Projects

Sexual assault is a serious, traumatic incident that is all too common on college campuses. Following the ordeal, those who are assaulted are often blamed. Victim blame occurs when the victim, rather than the perpetrator of a crime, is held at least partially responsible for the crime. This study seeks to determine the values that lead to victim-blaming behavior. After responding to the Ambivalent Sexism Scale, Belief in a Just World Measure, Sexual Script Scale, and Updated Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, participants read a vignette depicting an encounter where an individual was not physically able to consent to a …

A Resident Advisor’S Guide To Students With Perceived Eating Disorders, Danielle Smith

Honors Projects

Abstract
According to an extensive 2013 survey conducted by the National Eating Disorder Association which examined 165 different college campuses to see what was being done on campuses nation wide to spread awareness about disorders as well as treat them. There is still a significant gap in perceived need and available counseling or nutritional services by staff specializing in eating disorders on college campuses throughout the country” (National Eating Disorder Association). Therefore, the purpose of this honors project is to develop a comprehensive training guide for resident advisors on Bowling Green State University’s campus to utilize in order to support …

A Post Discharge Support Program For Patients Experiencing Psychological Non-Epileptic Seizures: A Pilot Project, Lahoma Prather Apr 2015

A Post Discharge Support Program For Patients Experiencing Psychological Non-Epileptic Seizures: A Pilot Project, Lahoma Prather

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Abstract

Rationale: There are no accepted standards of care for patients with psychological non-epileptic seizure (PNES) disorder. However the literature regarding PNES identified three common themes including acceptance of the diagnosis; consistent support and follow up; and development of appropriate outcome indicators. This pilot project was designed to address these themes rather than focus on a specific treatment modality.

Methods: The pilot project was initiated at the University of Louisville Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (CEC) to evaluate the feasibility of a post-discharge support program for the PNES population. Outcomes identified for measurement included seizure frequency, health care utilization, anti-epileptic medication use …

'My Story Ain’T Got Nothin To Do With You' Or Does It?: Black Female Faculty’S Critical Considerations Of Mentoring White Female Students, Kathleen E. Gillon, Lissa D. Stapleton Apr 2015

'My Story Ain’T Got Nothin To Do With You' Or Does It?: Black Female Faculty’S Critical Considerations Of Mentoring White Female Students, Kathleen E. Gillon, Lissa D. Stapleton

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Previous literature on mentoring, specifically that of cross-cultural mentoring, has provided some insight into the intricacy of race in mentoring. However, much of this literature has focused on the mentoring relationship of a White individual mentoring a person of color. This qualitative inquiry critically explores the experiences of six Black female faculty who have mentored White female students in higher education graduate programs, focusing specifically on how they enter into these cross-cultural mentoring relationships. Using Black feminist thought, our findings suggest that while individual Black faculty may have unique experiences entering into mentoring relationships with White female students, a Black …
