"Superbly Sterile:" Queer Reproduction In Victorian Literature And Culture, Mary Timothy Wilson
"Superbly Sterile:" Queer Reproduction In Victorian Literature And Culture, Mary Timothy Wilson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Examining a broad range of texts,“‘Superbly Sterile:’ Queer Reproduction in Victorian Literature and Culture,” argues that Thomas Hardy’s final naturalist novels, popular nineteenth-century vampire narratives, and the fiction of Oscar Wilde queered the bildungsroman (or novel of development) through characters who failed or refused to progress along sexual and maturational timelines. Where these texts’ critics have tended to read them as cautionary tales about homosexuality or predatory female sexuality, this dissertation contends that they also presented alternate forms of kinship and reproduction. They do so through the use of recursive, inverted, or otherwise backward relationships to time. Where Victorian sexology …
Do People With Aphasia Interpret Road Signs Differently Than People Without Aphasia?, Caitlin Elise Brown
Do People With Aphasia Interpret Road Signs Differently Than People Without Aphasia?, Caitlin Elise Brown
LSU Master's Theses
Purpose: This study increased our understanding of how aphasia may affect interpretation of road signs. Background: Despite aphasia’s theoretical effects on road sign comprehension and promising initial findings in studies that investigated driving and aphasia, the literature examining aphasia and road signs has been sparse. Research has shown that aphasia may have some effect on road sign interpretation. However, more study is needed regarding both accuracy and response time to road sign interpretation, which are equally important for safe driving. Methods: This was a prospective, between group study that used data collected from a larger study by Donovan, Savage, Varnado, …

Compromising The Craft: A Mixed-Methodological Analysis Of The Products And Processes Of Storytelling In Local Television And Digital News, Keren Esther Henderson
Compromising The Craft: A Mixed-Methodological Analysis Of The Products And Processes Of Storytelling In Local Television And Digital News, Keren Esther Henderson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Before the Telecommunications Act of 1996, station ownership was highly restricted to ensure that owners could not dominate in any one market nor own more than a handful of stations across all markets. The Act deregulated station ownership, redefining the role of the station owner from a financial supporter of public communication to an aggressive competitor in the television marketplace. With nearly three quarters of Americans citing local television and digital journalism as their top sources for information, this study serves two purposes: (1) to confirm the existence of storytelling as a professional, value-driven journalistic behavior in local television news …
Game Theoretic Analyses Of The United States-Canada Softwood Lumber Trade, Rajan Parajuli
Game Theoretic Analyses Of The United States-Canada Softwood Lumber Trade, Rajan Parajuli
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The ongoing softwood lumber trade dispute between the United States (U.S.) and Canada is one of the most contentious and largest bilateral trade battles over the recent decades. The bilateral trade debate is mostly because of the different forestland ownership systems in the U.S. and Canada, and the alleged timber subsidies by provincial governments to Canadian lumber producers. The Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA) 2006 between the U.S. and Canada is the latest transitory solution of this dispute, entailing Canada to impose mandatory export charges on its lumber shipments to the U.S. In order to understand this trade dispute from a …

Dmitri Kabalevsky: A Pedagogical Analysis Of Five Sets Of Variations, Op. 51 And Easy Variations, Op. 40, Patrick Collin Bachmann
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This monograph explores the life of Russian born composer, educator, and pianist Dmitri Kabalevsky. The first chapter presents a biography of Kabalevksy with special attention given to how biographical details from his life relate to his pedagogical piano works. The second chapter talks about the “Three Whales” of music: the song, march, and dance. Kabalevsky believed these three genres were the most accessible forms of music and that all music was built upon these vital categories. The third chapter analyzes Kabalevsky's compositional style and clarifies the specific features of his compositions that make them pedagogically sound and attractive to the …
Diversification And Biogeography Of Neotropical Cichlids, Caleb D. Mcmahan
Diversification And Biogeography Of Neotropical Cichlids, Caleb D. Mcmahan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The diversity of fishes in the Neotropics consists of nearly 6,000 species, approximately 10% of all vertebrate species on the planet. Evolutionary patterns and processes in fishes are often quite distinct from terrestrial biota, and the study of freshwater fishes can offer insight into understanding evolution and biogeography of regions. One of the major lineages of neotropical freshwater fishes, family Cichlidae, consist of over 500 species in the Neotropics but over 1,600 species overall. The aim of this study is to (1) assess diversification patterns within the family, with a focus on neotropical clades, (2) reassess phylogenetic relationships among northern …
Gender Stereotypes And The Strategic Use Of Emotions In The 2008 Elections, Newly Paul
Gender Stereotypes And The Strategic Use Of Emotions In The 2008 Elections, Newly Paul
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Scholars examining gender bias in elections have found that voters’ stereotypical expectations of women and men candidates affect their vote choice. This dissertation examines gender stereotypes from the perspective of campaigns. Specifically, I examine how ad, candidate and election variables interact with gender stereotypes to determine the use of emotions in political ads. My analysis contains ad data for the 2008 Senate, House and gubernatorial races gathered from the Wisconsin Advertising Project, combined with original content analysis of 1,170,728 ad airings (3,424 unique ads). The results indicate that campaigns’ use of fear, anger, enthusiasm and hope appeals depends to a …
A Study Of Resiliency In New Orleans Neighborhoods Ten Years After Hurricane Katrina, Paul Ramnauth Algu
A Study Of Resiliency In New Orleans Neighborhoods Ten Years After Hurricane Katrina, Paul Ramnauth Algu
LSU Master's Theses
Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005, flooding over eighty percent of the Greater New Orleans area and causing a mass exodus of the local population. Statistical analysis was used to quantify recovery at a neighborhood level and answer the following questions: What is the recovery rate of New Orleans neighborhoods ten years after Hurricane Katrina? What factors account for variation in recovery rates among neighborhoods? Six neighborhoods in Orleans Parish were selected for further study based on their unique geographical and recovery metrics. Recovery rates among the seventy-two neighborhoods were based on a comparison of United States Postal …

Factors Influencing Sustainable Cocoa Production In Northern Haiti, Wegbert Chery
Factors Influencing Sustainable Cocoa Production In Northern Haiti, Wegbert Chery
LSU Master's Theses
Given the environmental concerns on the one hand, especially soil erosion and deforestation, and the hope that the global cocoa market offers on the other hand, cocoa production is a potential candidate to simultaneously guarantee a competitive return to investment for farmers in northern Haiti and mitigate the negative environmental impact of farming practices. It becomes crucial for policy makers and investors to know and understand the key elements of the decision to produce cocoa. Though there has been substantial effort to improve the cocoa sector in Haiti, cocoa production systems in Haiti lag behind in the area of sustainability. …
Civic Community, Structural Disadvantage, And Suicide: An Ecological Analysis Of Middle-Age Non-Hispanic White Male Suicide Across The Rural-Urban Continuum, Kayla R. Fontenot
Civic Community, Structural Disadvantage, And Suicide: An Ecological Analysis Of Middle-Age Non-Hispanic White Male Suicide Across The Rural-Urban Continuum, Kayla R. Fontenot
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is a county-level sociological examination of middle-age (35-64) non-Hispanic white male suicides. Although an extensive amount of literature exists on ecological suicide, studies have largely ignored the correlates of suicide among this population group because this stage of the life course has historically demonstrated relatively low and stable rates of suicide. However, suicide rates among middle-age adults have increased dramatically over the last decade, calling for an examination of the correlates of suicide specific to this group. Moreover, the extant suicide literature has largely ignored the possibility of a structural disadvantage-suicide link, as well as the influence of …
The Edible Landscape: Plant Breeding, Farming, And Sustainbility In Northwest Portugal, Joseph Blanchard Powell
The Edible Landscape: Plant Breeding, Farming, And Sustainbility In Northwest Portugal, Joseph Blanchard Powell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is an ethnographic analysis of a participatory plant breeding project in northwest Portugal. Participatory plant breeding (PPB) is a crop enhancement strategy that brings farmers and plant breeders together in the effort to conserve crop genetic resources in-situ, improve yield, and increase the overall agricultural sustainability in agriculture. One strategy in PPB calls for plant breeders to spend considerable time on working farms to understand better farmers’ knowledge and skill, and to survey the existing crop genetic diversity within the existing resource limitations on farms. Although there are clear social implications for PPB, the bulk of PPB evaluative …
Genetics Of Resistance To Aflatoxin Accumulation In Corn (Zea Mays), Ramesh Dhakal
Genetics Of Resistance To Aflatoxin Accumulation In Corn (Zea Mays), Ramesh Dhakal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Aflatoxin accumulation in corn continues to be a major problem in all southeastern corn growing states. Development of resistant inbreds and hybrids is a sustainable approach to reduce aflatoxin contamination. Mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to Aspergillus flavus infection and aflatoxin accumulation in maize and developing markers associated with them can be helpful to speed up the breeding program. An F2:3 mapping population developed from the cross between Mp715 and B73 and a genetic linkage map was constructed using 136 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers spanning the whole genome. QTL for aflatoxin resistance were identified in both …

Between Beauty And Duty: Ethics And Judgment In Camus And Kant, Alex Donovan Cole
Between Beauty And Duty: Ethics And Judgment In Camus And Kant, Alex Donovan Cole
LSU Master's Theses
The ideas of Albert Camus and Immanuel Kant are not often thought of as sharing pronounced similarities. However, both thinkers are deeply concerned with role of aesthetics in moral, and subsequently, political life. According to each, taste is a faculty whereby one is able to develop the “moral insight” needed for the flourishing of a robust, thoughtful, ethical individual. Yet, both Camus and Kant utilize highly divergent methodologies in going about this. Camus prefers the artistic form and poetic language offered by the novel and Kant prefers the logical rigor of critical philosophical arguments. This thesis hopes to reveal that …
Bioplastic Production In Cyanobacteria And Consensus Degenerate Pcr Probe Design, Courtney Edward Lane
Bioplastic Production In Cyanobacteria And Consensus Degenerate Pcr Probe Design, Courtney Edward Lane
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Cyanobacteria show much promise in reducing biodegradable thermoplastic production costs; however, most currently characterized strains are ill-equipped to do so. The result of Objective I produced a high-throughput assay designed to discover existing cyanobacterial strains and rapidly characterize them as PHA-producers or potential PHA-producers. This assay will play an instrumental role in the attainment of a novel cyanobacteria environmental isolate capable of accumulating high levels of PHA naturally. Objective II produced an open source computer program which dramatically speeds the design of similar assays for any arbitrary genetic screening purpose. The program is not limited to this implementation alone. In …
Bullying In Schools: The Relationship Between Educational Staff Burnout And Staff Response To Bullying, Katherine Marie Harrison
Bullying In Schools: The Relationship Between Educational Staff Burnout And Staff Response To Bullying, Katherine Marie Harrison
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Bullying among school-aged youth is associated with negative short- and long-term consequences. Research suggests that teachers can be influential in reducing bullying but that they often do little to address it. Occupational burnout is high among educators and can significantly affect students’ motivation, learning, and feelings of support. The current study examines the effect of occupational burnout on educational staff’s likelihood of responding to bullies and victims of physical, verbal, relational, and cyber bullying. Participants (N = 109) were administrators, teachers, and other school staff serving secondary-level students. Overall, most participants reported experiencing low levels of burnout, viewed bullying as …
The Bioactive Compounds In Agricultural Products And Their Roles In Health Promoting Functions, Yixiao Shen
The Bioactive Compounds In Agricultural Products And Their Roles In Health Promoting Functions, Yixiao Shen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Bioactive compounds from different agricultural food products have attracted great interest from food industries and researchers for their health promoting functions such as antioxidant, antiaging, anti-inflammatory and anticancer performance. In this study, hydrophilic and lipophilic fraction of two economical agricultural products sweet sorghum millet and sweet potato, as well as two herbs, butterfly pea and basil were extracted. The profiles and contents of phenolics, fatty acids, tocopherols, carotenoids and phytosterols in these selected agricultural products were determined by chromatography and mass spectrum methods. Additionally, the anti-lipid-oxidation capability of sweet sorghum millet and basil, and anti-cancer potential of butterfly pea seed …
Regulation Of The Chloride Store In The Retinal Amacrine Cells, Vijai Krishnan
Regulation Of The Chloride Store In The Retinal Amacrine Cells, Vijai Krishnan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Nitric Oxide (NO) is a key gaseous messenger that has been shown to be produced by multiple cell types in the vertebrate retina. Research in our lab is aimed at unlocking critical synaptic functions of NO. A major finding from our lab is that NO affects synaptic responses in amacrine cells by altering the plasma membrane gradient for Cl-. This is due to release of Cl- from an internal store and this in turn dependent on a decrease in cytosolic pH. Determining the factors regulating cytosolic Cl- in neurons is fundamental to our understanding of the function of GABAergic and …
Articulating Situated Knowledge And Standpoints In Our Responses To Contemporary Street Fiction: A Book Club Case Study With African American Women, Yvette Rachele Hyde
Articulating Situated Knowledge And Standpoints In Our Responses To Contemporary Street Fiction: A Book Club Case Study With African American Women, Yvette Rachele Hyde
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Contemporary street fiction is a form of literature that has been growing in popularity since the 1990s. Such novels are set in contemporary urban contexts and present the experiences of historically oppressed groups. Sold in venues such as independent bookstores, the Internet, barbershops, beauty salons, flea markets, street vendors, and churches (Hill, Pérez, & Irby, 2008; McClellan, 2011), this genre is especially popular among African American females. Because much of the scholarship concerning engagement with contemporary street fiction focuses on improving school literacy skills, the purpose of this study was to investigate readers’ responses in a book club held at …
Fish Assemblage Response To Environmental Gradients And Altered Dendritic Connectivity In The Red River Basin, Central Louisiana, Catherine Nell Reuter
Fish Assemblage Response To Environmental Gradients And Altered Dendritic Connectivity In The Red River Basin, Central Louisiana, Catherine Nell Reuter
LSU Master's Theses
Louisiana’s small streams provide critical habitat for diverse ecologically and economically important fish species. However, the relationship between these fish assemblages and habitat variables remains poorly understood. The role of anthropogenic alteration of dendritic stream connectivity is of specific interest and has been shown to significantly influence stream ecology. This study explored the interaction among watershed characteristics, stream connectivity, stream physico-chemistry, and fish assemblages in little-studied Red River basin of central Louisiana as well as how reservoir littoral zones compared to streams, both in terms of fish assemblage and habitat. Fish and habitat were sampled in 21 headwater streams, half …
Musicking New Orleans Street Musicians: A Methodology For Writing About Music, Savannah Cadi Rose Ganster
Musicking New Orleans Street Musicians: A Methodology For Writing About Music, Savannah Cadi Rose Ganster
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This project argues for the use of performative writing as a methodology for writing about musical performances. An analysis of recent scholarship on music and musical performances written by performance studies scholars supports the use of performative writing in texts that address musical performances. In order to further this methodological claim, this study uses performative writing to document both historical and present day accounts of musical performances of street musicians in New Orleans. Utilizing Foucault’s theories on and Roach’s model of genealogy, Bruner’s notion of reflexive ethnography, and Small’s concept of musicking, I theorize, on a meta-methodological level, that performative …

Expanded Stepparent And Grandparent Third-Party Childcare In Illinois, Jeffrey A. Parness
Expanded Stepparent And Grandparent Third-Party Childcare In Illinois, Jeffrey A. Parness
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Recognizing the need for reforms involving, inter alia, parental and third-party childcare interests, the Illinois General Assembly created a study committee, resulting in several proposed amendments to the Illinois Parentage Act and to the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act. After several years of debate and amendment, parentage and marriage dissolution law reforms were enacted in 2015. Unfortunately, the recent changes, and the earlier proposals arising from the study, insufficiently address the inadequacies of the current regimes on third-party childcare, especially childcare opportunities for stepparents and grandparents. This is especially problematic since there are few, if any, opportunities for …
The Rhetorical Function Of Laugh Tracks In Situation Comedies: Examining Queer Shame In Will & Grace And Roseanne, Jimmie Manning
The Rhetorical Function Of Laugh Tracks In Situation Comedies: Examining Queer Shame In Will & Grace And Roseanne, Jimmie Manning
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
I examine laugh track use in two highly popular television programs, Will & Grace and Roseanne, to consider how the construction of what is or is not supposed to be funny has rhetorical implications for queer identities and relationships. These texts were selected not only for their abundance of queer characters—Will & Grace focused on a gay man/straight woman best friend relationship and Roseanne featured at least one queer character each year beginning with the third season—but also because of their immense popularity. I argue that these two programs constitute what I call enduring popular culture texts, popular entertainment that …
Going Off To The War In Hungary: French Nobles And Crusading Culture In The Sixteenth Century, Brian Sandberg
Going Off To The War In Hungary: French Nobles And Crusading Culture In The Sixteenth Century, Brian Sandberg
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Crusading culture played a significant role in the conceptions and practices of religious warfare in the Early Modern Period, as French authors and militant nobles redeployed Hungary as a crucial theater of crusading war. Examining crusading warfare in Hungary reveals new facets of warrior nobles’ military activities in early modern France and abroad, building on recent studies of French noble culture. The article concludes that French readers developed notions of crusading warfare in part through reports of the war in Hungary, contributing to a burgeoning literature on the production, diffusion, and reception of early modern news and information across Europe.
An Empirical Analysis Of Noncompetition Clauses And Other Restrictive Postemployment Covenants, Randall S. Thomas, Norman D. Bishara, Kenneth J. Martin
An Empirical Analysis Of Noncompetition Clauses And Other Restrictive Postemployment Covenants, Randall S. Thomas, Norman D. Bishara, Kenneth J. Martin
Vanderbilt Law Review
Employment contracts for most employees are not publicly available, leaving researchers to speculate about whether they contain postemployment restrictions on employee mobility, and if so, what those provisions look like. Using a large sample of publicly available CEO employment contracts, we are able to examine these noncompetition covenants, including postemployment covenants not to compete ("CNCs" or "noncompetes'), nonsolicitation agreements ("NSAs"), and nondisclosure agreements ("NDAs'). What we found confirms some long-held assumptions about restrictive covenants but also uncovers some surprises.
We begin by discussing why employers use restrictive covenants and examining how the courts have treated them. We then analyze an …
Towards A New Paradigm Of Judicial Education, Mary R. Russell
Towards A New Paradigm Of Judicial Education, Mary R. Russell
Journal of Dispute Resolution
When talking about judicial education, a central question emerges: What is the goal of judicial education for judges? A simple answer springs to mind: To make us better judges, of course. This of course is a deceptively simple question with a deceptively simple answer, until there is an attempt to specifically identify how to accomplish this worthy judicial education goal, and that is where simplicity disappears
