Curcumin: A Folklore Remedy From Kitchen On The Way To Clinic As Cancer Drug, Debasish Bandyopadhyay

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Numerous compounds are widely distributed in nature and many of these possess medicinal/biological/pharmacological activity. Curcumin, a polyphenol derived from the rhizomes (underground stems) of Curcuma longa Linn (a member of the ginger family, commonly known as turmeric) is a culinary spice and therapeutic used in India for thousands of years to induce color and flavor in food as well as to treat a wide array of diseases. The origin of turmeric as spice and folklore medicine is so old that it is lost in legend. Curcumin has many beneficial pharmacological effects which includes, but are not limited with, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, …

Domain knowledge bases are a basis for advanced knowledge-based systems, manually creating a formal knowledge base for a certain domain is both resource consuming and non-trivial. In this paper, we propose an approach that provides support to extract, select, and disambiguate terms embedded in domain specific documents. The extracted terms are later used to enrich existing ontologies/taxonomies, as well as to bridge domain specific knowledge base with a generic knowledge base such as WordNet. The proposed approach addresses two major issues in the term extraction domain, namely quality and efficiency. Also, the proposed approach adopts a feature-based method that assists …

Predicting Big Movers Based On Online Stock Forum Sentiment Analysis, Mohammad Al-Ramahi, Yen-Ling Chang, Omar F. El-Gayar, Jun Liu

Research & Publications

While social media sentiment has been proved to have predictive value for stock indices, it is intriguing to investigate if it is useful for predicting price changes for individual stocks. We focus on a special kind of stocks, big movers, i.e., stocks that undergo a drastic one-day price change, and a special kind of social media, online stock discussion forums. Based on an empirical study, our research shows that discussions during the days lead up to the big one-day price change do contain sentiments that can be used to predict big movers. The findings of our research have theoretical implications …

Stephens, Johant Lakey-Beitia, Abdurrahman Atesin, Tülay A. Ateşin, Gabriel Chavez, Hadi D. Arman, Oleg V. Larionov

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

We report herein a palladium-catalyzed C-H arylation of quinoline N-oxides that proceeds with high selectivity in favor of the C8-isomer. This site-selectivity is unusual for palladium, since all of the hitherto described methods of palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization of quinoline N-oxides are highly C2-selective. The reaction exhibits a broad synthetic scope with respect to quinoline N-oxides and iodoarenes and can be significantly accelerated to sub-hour reaction times under microwave irradiation. The C8-arylation method can be carried out on gram scale and has excellent functional group tolerance. Mechanistic and Density Functional Theory (DFT) computational studies provide evidence for the …

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

Librarians have taken on new and evolving roles, many of which have come about based on a need that can be uniquely satisfied with a librarian's background and expertise. Some roles have simply been filled due to a librarian's availability and willingness to volunteer for something new. In considering how these roles will continue to evolve and affect our daily work, we've identified and categorized the changing roles and responsibilities of Himmelfarb health science librarians.

A Novel In Situ Microscope For Studying Benthic Organisms, Andrew Mullen Jan 2015

A Novel In Situ Microscope For Studying Benthic Organisms, Andrew Mullen

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Coastal marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, kelp forests, sea grass beds and mangroves have significant societal value. As economic resources they support tourism, fisheries and storm protection while ecologically they host high biological diversity and productivity. Many basic biological, chemical, and physical processes taking place in these marine ecosystems occur at ‘micro-‐scales’ less than a millimeter in size. Examples of significant micro-‐scale activities include: coral bleaching of their single-‐ celled symbiotic algae, larval settlement and attachment, competition between sessile organisms along thin interfaces, and fluxes of particles to and from the seafloor. It is also important to consider that …

Correcting Corporate Benefit: How To Fix Shareholder Litigation By Shifting The Doctrine On Fees, Sean J. Griffith Jan 2015

Correcting Corporate Benefit: How To Fix Shareholder Litigation By Shifting The Doctrine On Fees, Sean J. Griffith

Faculty Scholarship

The current controversy in corporate law concerns whether firms can discourage litigation by shifting its cost to shareholders. But corporate law courts have long engaged in fee-shifting—from shareholder plaintiffs to the corporation—under the “corporate benefit” doctrine. This Article examines fee-shifting in share-holder litigation, arguing that current practices are unsound from the perspective of both doctrine and public policy. Unfortunately, the fee-shifting bylaws recently enacted in response to the problem of excessive shareholder litigation fare no better. The Article therefore offers a different approach to fee-shifting, articulating three specific reforms of the corporate benefit doctrine to quell the current crisis in …

Legitimacy And Expertise In Global Internet Governance, Olivier Sylvain Jan 2015

Legitimacy And Expertise In Global Internet Governance, Olivier Sylvain

Faculty Scholarship

Over the course of the past decade or so, attention among Internet policymakers and scholars has shifted gradually from substantive design principles to the structure of Internet governance. The Internet Corporation for Assigning Names and Numbers in particular now faces a new skepticism about its legitimacy to administer the essential Internet Assigned Numbers Authority function. ICANN has responded to these doubts by proposing a series of major governance reforms that would bring nation-states more into the organization's decisionmaking. After all, transnational governance institutions in other substantive areas privilege nation-states as a matter of course. This Symposium Essay shows that these …

Educators' Perspectives On Secondary Education Alternative Placement, Student Recidivism, And Treatment Models, John Anthony Anzalone

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The recidivism rate for disciplinary offenses has increased during the last 8 years in the secondary student population of a sizeable, urban school district in the southwest United States. Recidivism for this district is the act of committing a second disciplinary offense during a single calendar year following completion of a behavior program. Guided by Erikson's theory of social development, this case study was designed to collect a purposeful sample of 21 educators' perceptions of the impact of recidivism on students' education and the effectiveness of treatment models to reduce recidivism. Data were collected from qualitative semi-structured interviews and field …

Social Intelligence Of Undergraduates Enrolled In Traditional Vs. Distance Higher Education Learning Programs, Bo Scott Bennett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Participation in, and acceptance of, distance education has reached an all-time high. Yet many academics, policy makers, and laypeople remain concerned that distance education can adversely affect one's social development. The purpose of this quantitative study was to test that concern by comparing the social intelligence of distance undergraduates with the social intelligence of traditional undergraduates at different class ranks (i.e., freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) while limiting the ages of the participants (n = 190) to 18-24. Social intelligence, an operationally defined measure of the construct often referred to as social development has been a popular focus of research in …

The Creation Of A Pacemaker Clinic At A Federally-Funded Patient-Centered Medical Home: A Quality Improvement Project, Tony Anno Jan 2015

The Creation Of A Pacemaker Clinic At A Federally-Funded Patient-Centered Medical Home: A Quality Improvement Project, Tony Anno

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

It is common for clinicians to implant medical devices, such as permanent pacemakers and implantable defibrillators, for cardiac diseases. These medical devices require follow-up care at regular intervals to ensure proper device function and optimal outcomes. Currently, many individuals without insurance or financial resources lack access to recommended follow-up care after implantation of a cardiac device. The purpose of this project was to determine the number of individuals who have had a medical device implanted without insurance coverage over a 3-year period, and then to establish a clinic that provides this service. The standard of care and operating procedure for …
