Behavior management is a crucial topic in education. The management of student behavior in a classroom can affect the entire learning experience. As the needs of students and teachers change, the methods of behavior management adapt to accommodate new needs. This thesis identifies behavior management starting in the 1960’s and research determining its effectiveness. The causes of change in classroom and school-wide discipline systems are addressed, including political climates, court involvement, and tragic events within schools. The behavior management methods used in the current day are discussed. Through a review of literature and online sources, the information provided was gathered …

Exploring Attitudes Toward Teacher Led Parent Advocacy Models That Address Racial Education Inequity, Paula Yadel Cole Dec 2015

Exploring Attitudes Toward Teacher Led Parent Advocacy Models That Address Racial Education Inequity, Paula Yadel Cole

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The question addressed in this project is, “what are teachers and parents’ attitudes toward a teacher led parent advocacy model that addresses education inequity in Minnesota?” The premise of this work is that according to available research, current models for parent engagement in schools are not relevant to families of color. In depth interviews were conducted to understand how six families perceive the education system and how empowered they feel about leading their children towards higher education. The author also collected questionnaire responses to investigate how teachers feel about leading instruction at a potential parent leadership academy. The findings conclude …

All Your Sessions Are Belong To Us: Investigating Authenticator Leakage Through Backup Channels On Android, Guangdong Bai, Jun Sun, Jianliang Wu, Quanqi Ye, Li Li, Jin Song Dong, Shanqing Guo Dec 2015

All Your Sessions Are Belong To Us: Investigating Authenticator Leakage Through Backup Channels On Android, Guangdong Bai, Jun Sun, Jianliang Wu, Quanqi Ye, Li Li, Jin Song Dong, Shanqing Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Security of authentication protocols heavily relies on the confidentiality of credentials (or authenticators) like passwords and session IDs. However, unlike browser-based web applications for which highly evolved browsers manage the authenticators, Android apps have to construct their own management. We find that most apps simply locate their authenticators into the persistent storage and entrust underlying Android OS for mediation. Consequently, these authenticators can be leaked through compromised backup channels. In this work, we conduct the first systematic investigation on this previously overlooked attack vector. We find that nearly all backup apps on Google Play inadvertently expose backup data to any …

Cargo Cycles For Local And Last Mile Delivery: Lessons From New York City, Alison Conway Dec 2015

Cargo Cycles For Local And Last Mile Delivery: Lessons From New York City, Alison Conway

PSU Transportation Seminars

Cities depend on safe and efficient goods movement to support community livability and a healthy economy. However, delivery of goods in an urban environment presents a tremendous challenge. Traditional motorized vehicles used for goods movement – ranging from cargo vans to box trucks - are inherently incompatible with (1) the multimodal street environments of modern cities, with clean, quiet conditions preferred by residents, and (2) larger environmental sustainability goals. As freight flows continue to grow with the demands of global trade, new urban freight and city logistics solutions are needed.

Cargo cycles – human powered cycles equipped with freight carrying …

Looking Beyond Culture: Building Successful Multiparty Collaboration, James R. Hemsath Dec 2015

Looking Beyond Culture: Building Successful Multiparty Collaboration, James R. Hemsath

Student Scholarship

The complexities of global business and the need for rapid, effective responses to problems that cross borders and span cultures demand an understanding of why transnational multiparty collaborations have failed and why they have succeeded. At the core of this work is 1) understanding the role that culture and identity play in creating a meta-identity built on the strengths of individual and organization identities and the sameness those identities represent; 2) the development of strong connectedness between the parties and 3) the creation of a shared vision of what is trying to be achieved. Ultimately the strength of the meta-identity …

The Awkward Academic: Why Judith Reads James In Joyce Carol Oates's "My Warszawa: 1980", Kerry Sutherland Dec 2015

The Awkward Academic: Why Judith Reads James In Joyce Carol Oates's "My Warszawa: 1980", Kerry Sutherland

Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies

Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “My Warszawa: 1980” follows the journey of well-respected academician Judith Horne as she travels to and within Poland to participate in an international conference on American culture. She has a vague connection to Poland, with remote family members who were killed in Auschwitz and a Jewish ancestry that can be seen in her features, but she considers these facts unimportant to who she is at the moment. She travels with her lover, who is as remote emotionally as her dead forbears are physically. The emotional connections she makes with the people and land begin to …

The Effect Of Sleep Deprivation On Cadet Performance And Behavior: A Proposal To Reform The Rotc Program At James Madison University, Josh Wells

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

This paper addresses the problem of sleep deprivation among cadets in the Army ROTC program at James Madison University. Drawing on existing research and Army doctrine, the author examines the necessity of sleep for decision making, the biological consequences of sleep deprivation, and the effects of sleep deprivation on emotional intelligence. The paper also questions large, early-morning Physical Training (PT) sessions and their effectiveness in developing group cohesion. After comparing the research to the practices of the ROTC program, the author proposes a new training method for ROTC cadets to address the problems of sleep deprivation and large group PT.

Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith Dec 2015

Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Why are art and craft so widely separated in the Library of Congress Classification (LC) System? All classification systems give insight into worldviews prevalent at the time they were created, and library systems are especially illustrative of the cultures and cultural moments which shaped them. The separation of art and craft in LC, in N and TT respectively, compared to their collocation in LC’s contemporaries, Dewey Decimal Classification and Cutter’s Expansive Classification, suggests divergent views of the arts within librarianship, illuminating American views on the relative definitions of art and craft from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries.

Literature on library and the Internet were reviewed. The researcher adopted convenient sampling technique to select the sample for the study. Data was collected using questionnaires. Collected data was statistically analyzed and interpreted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Findings of the study indicated students do not bypass the library in satisfying their information need. They use both the library and the Internet, although Internet usage was more …

A New Vaejovis From The Mogollon Highlands Of Northern Arizona (Scorpiones: Vaejovidae), Richard F. Ayrey Dec 2015

A New Vaejovis From The Mogollon Highlands Of Northern Arizona (Scorpiones: Vaejovidae), Richard F. Ayrey

Euscorpius

A new scorpion species, Vaejovis halli sp. nov., is described. This relatively small, brown new species is found on Mount Ord in the Mazatzal Mountains along the Mogollon Rim of northern Arizona. The new species appears most similar to V. vorhiesi Stahnke and V. deboerae Ayrey. The most distinguishing characteristic of this new species is the number of inner denticles (ID) found on the pedipalp fingers with six on the movable finger and usually five on the fixed finger, which more closely correlates with Vaejovis species from the mountains of southern Arizona rather than those geographically closer …

Axis Mundi, An Intercultural Composition For The Atlas Ensemble, David Dean Mendoza Dec 2015

Axis Mundi, An Intercultural Composition For The Atlas Ensemble, David Dean Mendoza

Open Access Dissertations

In our time, composers are presented with an abundance of styles and tools with which to compose, as well as many compositional challenges. Intercultural composition is one such challenge. Intercultural music is music that combines, involves, or exists between two or more musical traditions. In the present study of intercultural composition, I have composed Axis Mundi for winds, zithers, strings, and percussion for members of the Atlas Ensemble to be submitted for a reading session during 2016 Atlas Academy. The Atlas Ensemble is an Amsterdam based ensemble whose musicians combine both Western and non-Western musical traditions. Learning about new instruments, …

Creation And Application Of The Systematically Merged Pacific Ocean Regional Temperature And Salinity (Sports) Climatology For Oceanic Heat Content Estimation, Elizabeth “Claire” Mccaskill Dec 2015

Creation And Application Of The Systematically Merged Pacific Ocean Regional Temperature And Salinity (Sports) Climatology For Oceanic Heat Content Estimation, Elizabeth “Claire” Mccaskill

Open Access Theses

The Systematically merged Pacific Ocean Regional Temperature and Salinity (SPORTS) climatology was created to estimate oceanic heat content (OHC) for the North Pacific (McCaskill et al., 2015). A technique similar to the creation of the Systematically Merged Atlantic Regional Temperature and Salinity climatology was used to blend temperature and salinity fields from the Generalized Digital Environment Model and World Ocean Atlas 2001 at a 0.25° resolution (Meyers et al., 2014). The weighting for the blending of these two climatologies was estimated by minimizing residual covariances across the basin and accounting for drift velocities associated with eddy variability using a series …
