Climate And Energy: Opinions Of Nonmetropolitan Nebraskans, Rebecca Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Tonya Haigh
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
In coming decades, climate change threatens significant changes to the way Nebraskans live, work and play. Effects range from increased heavy precipitation events, increased periods of drought, warmer summers and a greater frequency of days over 100o F., and overall temperature increases. These changes have significant implications for agricultural production, water resource management, the increased occurrence of floods and droughts, human health, wildfires and other sectors. Are rural Nebraskans concerned about climate change? Do they think we have a role in adapting to our changing climate? Do they believe climate change will affect their family’s health in coming years? Energy …

Engagement In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: Civic And Political Participation And Views Of Community Leadership, Rebecca Vogt, Cheryl Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Trends have consistently shown that the population in nonmetropolitan counties is decreasing as a proportion of the total population of the state. These trends have the potential to significantly impact two areas of rural community sustainability, effective community leadership and community involvement. Rural communities rely on volunteers for many community development activities as well as local leadership positions. In smaller communities in particular, reduced populations requires community members to take on multiple roles. Rural Nebraskans are aware of the importance of good community leadership when faced with such issues. Most rural Nebraskans rated effective community leadership as absolutely essential for …
Evaluation Of Resident Canada Goose Movements To Reduce The Risk Of Goose-Aircraft Collisions At Suburban Airports, M. Elizabeth Rutledge, Christopher E. Moorman, Brian E. Washburn, Christopher S. Deperno
Evaluation Of Resident Canada Goose Movements To Reduce The Risk Of Goose-Aircraft Collisions At Suburban Airports, M. Elizabeth Rutledge, Christopher E. Moorman, Brian E. Washburn, Christopher S. Deperno
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Resident (non-migratory) Canada goose (Branta canadensis) populations in suburban environments pose risks to human health and safety. Specifically, the relatively large size and gregarious behavior of geese combined with an overlap in aircraft flight space pose substantial risk of property damage and human fatalities from goose-aircraft collisions. We estimated home range and core use areas of resident Canada geese and evaluated goose movements to better define the risk of goose-aircraft collisions around Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA.We placed satellite transmitters on 16 of 763 neck- and leg-banded geese to identify and track individuals over …
An Examination Of Some Central Debates On Sex Trafficking In Research And Public Policy In The United States, Carrie N. Baker
An Examination Of Some Central Debates On Sex Trafficking In Research And Public Policy In The United States, Carrie N. Baker
Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications
Numerous heated debates about human trafficking pervade mainstream media as well as the scholarly literature. The United States’ law and order approach to human trafficking, which prioritizes criminal prosecution of traffickers, is supported by many anti-trafficking advocates. But others have articulated powerful critiques of this approach. The first part of this article provides an introduction to some of these debates, focusing on five areas: definitions of human trafficking, the scope of the problem, causes and solutions of human trafficking, the effectiveness and impact of anti-trafficking laws, and anti-trafficking dis courses. This section will discuss the role of research on trafficking …

A Free Start: Community-Based Organizations As An Antidote To The Mass Incarceration Of Women Pretrial, Amber Baylor
A Free Start: Community-Based Organizations As An Antidote To The Mass Incarceration Of Women Pretrial, Amber Baylor
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
Collaborations with community-based programs can potentially reduce the mass incarceration of women in jails across the country. Despite recommendations to the contrary, judges consistently require bail rather than release. As a result, indigent women who cannot pay bail are detained while their income, home, health, and family networks unravel. Ms. Baylor recommends the utilization of community organizations and services at the pretrial stage, which would result in fewer people regulated to prison as a resolution in their criminal case, or returning to jail in the future.
