Mind The Gap: Perceptions Of Passenger Aggression And Train Car Supervision In A Commuter Rail System, Nerea Marteache, Gisela Bichler, Janet Enriquez Jun 2015

Mind The Gap: Perceptions Of Passenger Aggression And Train Car Supervision In A Commuter Rail System, Nerea Marteache, Gisela Bichler, Janet Enriquez

Journal of Public Transportation

Negative perceptions about the safety of a commuter rail system can act as a barrier to using public transportation. When operational issues increase rider tension (i.e., crowding or worsening on-time performance), or the management capabilities of conductors and law enforcement personnel are called into question, an upsurge in passenger-on-passenger aggression may occur. In turn, riders concerned about their safety may retreat to personal vehicles or other forms of “less risky” transit, such as express buses. Modifying an interstitial estimation process, this study presents a new method of identifying where rider concerns about public safety concentrate. Using the commuter rail system …

Tadpole Tandem Electrically Assisted Tricycle, Austin Frederickson, Anthony Jacques, Kris Lawrence, Preston Mcelroy

Mechanical Engineering

The purpose of this senior project was to investigate the possibility of making bikes (as a regular mode of transportation) look much more appealing to the general public. To that end, an electric motor assist system was added to make it easier for the operators of the vehicle. A fairing was added to protect the rider from wind and rain, and an electrical subsystem consisting of a microcontroller and many other components was also added. The electrical subsystem was meant to store the information of different riders, calculate calories burned using a heart beat sensor, and increase visibility using strategically-placed …

"The Shameful Wall Of Exclusion": How Solitary Confinement For Inmates With Mental Illness Violates The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jessica Knowles Jun 2015

"The Shameful Wall Of Exclusion": How Solitary Confinement For Inmates With Mental Illness Violates The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jessica Knowles

Washington Law Review

Although solitary confinement is conventionally challenged under the “cruel and unusual” standard of the Eighth Amendment, this approach presents several intractable legal hurdles to successful claims. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), 42 U.S.C. §§ 12101 et seq., and its precursor, the Rehabilitation Act, provide innovative and non-constitutional causes of action for inmates with mental illness1 to challenge their solitary confinement. It is estimated that at least thirty percent of inmates in solitary confinement are mentally ill, a high percentage that is due to both the disproportionate number of mentally ill inmates who are isolated from the general prison population …

From Due Diligence To Discrimination: Employer Use Of Social Media Vetting In The Hiring Process And Potential Liabilities, Jennifer Delarosa

Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review

This Note analyzes the regulatory and legal issues potentially triggered by an employer’s screening and use of an applicant’s social media profile(s) in the hiring process. The Note proceeds in three parts. Part I provides background information, including a history of the rise and use of social media in the hiring process, current various state and federal legislative measures designed to protect applicants’ online privacy, and the reasoning behind such legislation. Part II discusses the potential discrimination and other labor and employment-related lawsuits to which employers may be exposed by using online information in hiring practices. It is important to …

Locating Optimal Water Quality Monitoring Locations Using Demand Coverage Index Method, Jeffrey Scott Brake Jun 2015

Locating Optimal Water Quality Monitoring Locations Using Demand Coverage Index Method, Jeffrey Scott Brake

Master's Theses

Water quality regulations are always expanding especially in the field of water quality monitoring; however, threats to our water distribution systems still remain. Components of water distribution systems are susceptible to intentional and accidental contamination; therefore, they represent highly vulnerable aspects of our vital infrastructure.

An analysis was performed on a city in California with a population of 30,000 to 40,000 residents. The analysis is performed to determine the optimal locations of monitoring stations throughout the water distribution system. The method presented by Liu and colleagues (Liu et al, 2012) selects the optimal monitoring locations for the virtual California city …

Race, Immigration Reform, And Heteropatriarchal Masculinity: Reframing The Obama Presidency, Seth N. Asumah

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In this article, I argue that the macroscopic nature and complexity of race, hegemonic masculinity, and immigration issues in the United States put President Obama in a double bind for any attempt to secure reforms—situations which produce limited options and exposure to penalties in reaching solutions.

Just Another Communications Tool, Deedee M. Bennett Jun 2015

Just Another Communications Tool, Deedee M. Bennett

Public Administration Faculty Publications

Several communications tools are used by emergency management agencies (EMAs) to disseminate emergency alerts and warnings, including sirens, television, radio and telephones. In recent years, some EMAs have begun to use social media for a variety of emergencies to relay important information to the public and to engage the citizenry in useful discussions on preparedness and recovery. In a 2014 survey of 139 FEMA approved alert authorities, nearly 90% of respondents indicated that they use social media to disseminate public alerts. However, there are still late adopters. In addition, social media use is not universal or uniform across all EMAs. …

An Iris Authentication System Based On Artificial Neural Networks, Brenden Velu Jun 2015

An Iris Authentication System Based On Artificial Neural Networks, Brenden Velu

Electrical Engineering

An iris authentication system verifies the authenticity of a person based on their iris features. The iris features are extracted through wavelet transform of the isolated iris from modified iris images. A level 5 wavelet decomposition is performed on the images, and the resulting low-frequency wavelet coefficients represent the inputs to the artificial neural network. The artificial neural network reads these features as inputs, and classifies each set of inputs according to their target identity. This authentication system currently classifies up to 10 people. The irises used for classification represent ideal situations with minimum eyelash and eyelid interference.

Influencing Factors For Use Of Unmanned Aerial Systems In Support Of Aviation Accident And Emergency Response, Brent Terwilliger, Dennis Vincenzi, David Ison, Kenneth Witcher, David Thirtyacre, Adeel Khalid

Applied Aerospace Science

"The purpose of this research paper was to examine the influencing factors associated with the use of unmanned aerial system (UAS) technology to support aviation accident and emergency response. The ability of first responders to react to an emergency is dependent on the quality, accuracy, timeliness, and usability of information. With aviation accidents such as the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash at San Francisco International Airport, the ability to sense and communicate the location of victims may reduce the potential for accidental passenger death. Furthermore, the ability to obtain information en-route to an accident may also to assist to reduce …

To Weed Or Not To Weed? The Colorado Quandary Of Legitimate Marijuana Businesses And The Financial Institutions Who Are Unable To Serve Them, Rachel Cheasty Sanders Jun 2015

To Weed Or Not To Weed? The Colorado Quandary Of Legitimate Marijuana Businesses And The Financial Institutions Who Are Unable To Serve Them, Rachel Cheasty Sanders

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

In 2012, Colorado voters passed Amendment 64, legalizing recreational marijuana. Marijuana, however, remains an illegal controlled substance under federal law. As a result of federal anti-money laundering laws, financial institutions risk prosecution if they provide services to customers whose funds derive from illegal activities. The Obama Administration issued guidance to help both law enforcement and financial institutions navigate this murky area. This guidance directed U.S. Attorneys to focus their resources on prosecuting persons whose activities implicate any federal priority designated by the Department of Justice. If state-legal marijuana businesses adhere to state law and financial institutions follow proper protocol, there …

Development Of A Support Approach For 911 Call Centre Work With A View To Preventing Musculoskeletal Disorders And Psychological Health Problems, Georges Toulouse, Louise St-Arnaud, Mariève Pelletier

Guilty But Mentally Ill: The Ethical Dilemma Of Mental Illness As A Tool Of The Prosecution, Lauren G. Johansen Jun 2015

Guilty But Mentally Ill: The Ethical Dilemma Of Mental Illness As A Tool Of The Prosecution, Lauren G. Johansen

Alaska Law Review

While other jurisdictions use guilty but mentally ill as a compromise verdict to fill the gap between guilty by reason of insanity and a guilty verdict after an unsuccessful insanity defense, Alaska has transformed the status into a prosecutorial tool to keep mentally ill defendants incarcerated for longer than their mentally sane counterparts through denial of “good time” credit. Although Blakely was used—correctly—to prevent the denial of the mentally ill their Sixth Amendment right to a trial by jury and proof beyond a reasonable doubt in December 2013’s State v. Clifton, the court of appeals eliminated any utility from …
