The Visible And Invisible Aspects Of Miscarriage: A Phenomenological, Hermeneutic, Imaginal Study, Denise M. Mahone Jan 2015

The Visible And Invisible Aspects Of Miscarriage: A Phenomenological, Hermeneutic, Imaginal Study, Denise M. Mahone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a qualitative study that used an innovative, phenomenological, hermeneutic, imaginal method to explore the implicit, embodied, and imaginal dimensions of three women's lived experiences of perinatal loss and its aftermath. The study has a dual, but overlapping, focus on a holistic elaboration of women's lived experience of perinatal loss that includes these less articulated dimensions of experience, as well as a focus on the process and implications of the innovative method itself as a research approach. Findings are presented accordingly, addressing both new understandings about the lived phenomenon of miscarriage, and foregrounding the working method through which those …

Rethinking Ethics Assessment In Health Technology Assessment: A Nonlinear Approach, Aimee Zellers Jan 2015

Rethinking Ethics Assessment In Health Technology Assessment: A Nonlinear Approach, Aimee Zellers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary question this dissertation aims to answer is how ethics can be meaningfully integrated into health technology assessment (HTA). The contribution of this dissertation is two-fold. The first is to provide an honest and critical evaluation of current HTA practices, including those that involve ethics assessments and that do not. This evaluation will identify gaps and deficiencies in current HTA practices. The second contribution of this dissertation is to propose an approach for meaningful ethics assessment. The nonlinear approach contains five methodologically sound phases aimed to support both ethics assessment and scientific progress. The approach will be applied to …

A New Ethical Model For The Analysis Of Care For Refugee Women Who Experience Female Genital Cutting, Sharon R. Higginbothan Jan 2015

A New Ethical Model For The Analysis Of Care For Refugee Women Who Experience Female Genital Cutting, Sharon R. Higginbothan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States is rapidly becoming a location for refugee women who are migrating from countries that embrace different and distinctive practices. One such practice is Female Genital Cutting/ mutilation (FGC/m). FGC is a medical procedure that alters the natural structure and functioning of the female body. It is also a cultural tradition and custom. Until recently, worldwide studies estimated that approximately 80 to 140 million women have undergone FGC and that 228, 000 of those women live in the U.S. However, the estimate of women and girls in the U.S. living with or at risk from FGC has grown …

To Fidget Or Not To Fidget: The Effect Of Movement On Cognition, Kelsey Diane Grodner Jan 2015

To Fidget Or Not To Fidget: The Effect Of Movement On Cognition, Kelsey Diane Grodner

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research suggests that there is controversy regarding the effects of fidgeting. On one hand, fidgeting has been associated with inattention. On the other hand, the act of suppressing movement may have extensive costs to cognitive abilities. Thus, allowing fidgeting might be beneficial for attention. However certain fidgeting behaviors, such as large body movements, might be disruptive in certain situations, like a classroom or an office meeting. Fidget toys have been developed that allow for smaller fidgeting movements that are non-disruptive. Most previous studies have been conducted in an elementary school classroom and have used primarily observational data. Here we …

Closing Time And Cheerleader Effects Are Moderated By Target Value, Jackie R. Mcdowell Jan 2015

Closing Time And Cheerleader Effects Are Moderated By Target Value, Jackie R. Mcdowell

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research on factors influencing evaluations of mate value has revealed seemingly contradictory results. Specifically, the Closing Time Effect predicts that individuals will be viewed as more attractive when there are fewer individuals to choose from, while the Cheerleader Effect predicts that individuals will be viewed as more attractive when they are in the presence of others. The current study evaluates the influence of baseline measures of attractiveness on each of these effects. Results indicate that low value individuals may be more subject to Closing Time Effects, while high value individuals benefit from the Cheerleader Effect. The influence of mating …

Role Of Student Entitlement And Co-Production On Satisfaction, Deborah Jean Sisson Jan 2015

Role Of Student Entitlement And Co-Production On Satisfaction, Deborah Jean Sisson

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

The marketing of services has challenges uncommon to that of marketing products. By nature service offerings are intangible, heterogeneous, perishable, and simultaneously consumed and produced. This simultaneous consumption and production often requires the consumer to participate in the service delivery – co-production. Colleges and universities offer a service which requires high levels of co-production by students and is the setting for this research. As colleges/universities face greater challenges at this time, there is a need for better understanding of the role the student plays in the production process. The service marketing literature offers an understanding of the importance of the …

Ethical Leadership, The Fair Process Effects Of Organizational Justice And Financial Performance, Hopeton Saint Aubyn Morrison Jan 2015

Ethical Leadership, The Fair Process Effects Of Organizational Justice And Financial Performance, Hopeton Saint Aubyn Morrison

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT ETHICAL LEADERSHIP, THE FAIR PROCESS EFFECTS OF ORGANIZATIONAL JUSTICE AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE by Hopeton St. Aubyn Morrison The research inquired if ethical leadership (EL) positively impacted financial performance (FP) and if this relationship was mediated by the fairness effects of organizational justice. The organizational constructs that we examined were distributive justice, procedural justice and interactional justice. The research led to us proposing 12 hypotheses using correlations, t-tests, and logistic regressions. In our tests of mediation we drew on Preacher and Hayes (2008) multiple mediation strategy and tested by logistic regression and bootstrapping for indirect effects. Our results confirmed that …

Can Social Stories Lead To An Improved Theory Of Mind Amongst Individuals With Autism?, Margaret Rose Lorenzetti Jan 2015

Can Social Stories Lead To An Improved Theory Of Mind Amongst Individuals With Autism?, Margaret Rose Lorenzetti

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigated whether Social Stories used in conjunction with perspective- taking questions would lead to an improved Theory of Mind (ToM) in three participants diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We assessed participants’ perspective taking in a baseline condition, implemented a Social Story condition, and tested participants’ perspective taking again in a post-intervention condition. ToM was assessed using two variations of the false belief measures, namely the change-location and unexpected-contents paradigms. Each Social Story included three perspective-taking questions that required participants to infer a character’s emotion or perspective. Results indicated that participants’ percentage scores of correct responses increased markedly …

The Interaction Of Perceived Organizational Support And Emotional Intelligence: Mediated Moderated Effects On Work Outcomes, John Fazio Jan 2015

The Interaction Of Perceived Organizational Support And Emotional Intelligence: Mediated Moderated Effects On Work Outcomes, John Fazio

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to explore a conditional process through which the perception of organizational support relates to workers’ intention to quit and performance. These relations were expected to be indirectly effected by workers’ levels of job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and buffered by workers’ levels of emotional intelligence, such that the relations would be weaker for employees possessing higher levels of emotional intelligence. Data was collected at a medium sized healthcare facility in south-central West Virginia through emailed surveys utilizing validated and empirically grounded scales for all constructs. The sample of 213 employees equated to a …

The Effect Of Social Context And Social Scale On The Perception Of Relationships In Monk Parakeets, Elizabeth A. Hobson, Darlene J. John, Tiffany L. Mcintosh, Michael L. Avery, Timonthy F. Wright Jan 2015

The Effect Of Social Context And Social Scale On The Perception Of Relationships In Monk Parakeets, Elizabeth A. Hobson, Darlene J. John, Tiffany L. Mcintosh, Michael L. Avery, Timonthy F. Wright

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Social relationships formed within a network of interacting group members can have a profound impact on an individual’s behavior and fitness. However, we have little understanding of how individuals perceive their relationships and how this perception relates to our external measures of interactions. We investigated the perception of affiliative and agonistic relationships at both the dyadic and emergent social levels in two captive groups of monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus, n = 21 and 19) using social network analysis and playback experiments. At the dyadic social scale, individuals directed less aggression towards their strong affiliative partners and more aggression …

Human–Carnivore Interactions: Lessons Learned From Communities In The American West, Julie K. Young, Zhao Ma, Ann Laudati, Joel Berger Jan 2015

Human–Carnivore Interactions: Lessons Learned From Communities In The American West, Julie K. Young, Zhao Ma, Ann Laudati, Joel Berger

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Types, causes, and intensity of human–carnivore interactions are related to historical context, management policy, and human perception. We used four rural communities in the American West with varying histories and management policies to assess the complexities of human–carnivore interactions and to determine factors influencing individual willingness to coexist with carnivores. By analyzing focus group and interview data from 49 community members, we found that human perceptions towards carnivores and their management were influenced by self-perceived knowledge about carnivores, ability to be heard and have a voice in management decisions, and economic concerns rather than ecological factors. Willingness to coexist with …
